Current-density functional for disordered systems

The effective action for the current and density is shown to satisfy an evolution equation, the functional generalization of Callan-Symanzik equation. The solution describes the dependence of the one-particle irreducible vertex functions on the strength of the quenched disorder and the annealed Coulomb interaction. The result is non-perturbative, no small parameter is assumed. The a.c. conductivity is obtained by the numerical solution of the evolution equation on finite lattices in the absence of the Coulomb interaction. The static limit is performed and the conductivity is found to be vanishing beyond a certain threshold of the impurity strength.

Lectures on the functional renormalization group method

These introductory notes are about functional renormalization group equations and some of their applications. It is emphasised that the applicability of this method extends well beyond critical systems, it actually provides us a general purpose algorithm to solve strongly coupled quantum field theories. The renormalization group equation of F. Wegner and A. Houghton is shown to resum the loop-expansion. Another version, due to J. Polchinski, is obtained by the method of collective coordinates and can be used for the resummation of the perturbation series. The genuinely non-perturbative evolution equation is obtained in a manner reminiscent of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. Two variants of this scheme are presented where the scale which determines the order of the successive elimination of the modes is extracted from external and internal spaces. The renormalization of composite operators is discussed briefly as an alternative way to arrive at the renormalization group equation. The scaling laws and fixed points are considered from local and global points of view. Instability induced renormalization and new scaling laws are shown to occur in the symmetry broken phase of the scalar theory. The flattening of the effective potential of a compact variable is demonstrated in case of the sine-Gordon model. Finally, a manifestly gauge invariant evolution equation is given for QED.

Internal Space Renormalization Group Methods for Atomic and Condensed Matter Physics

The functional renormalization group method is used to take into account the vacuum polarization around localized bound states generated by external potential. The application to Atomic Physics leads to improved Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham equations in a systematic manner within the framework of the Density Functional Theory. Another application to Condensed Matter Physics consists of an algorithm to compute quenched averages with or without Coulomb interaction in a non-perturbative manner.

Functional Callan-Symanzik Equation for the Coulomb Gas

A non-perturbative scheme, based on the functional generalization of the Callan-Symanzik equation is developed to treat the Coulomb interaction in an electron gas. The one-particle irreducible vertex functions are shown to satisfy an evolution equation whose initial condition is given by means of the classical action and the final point corresponds to the physical system. This equation is truncated by expanding it in momenta and excitation energies, leaving the electric charge as an arbitrary, not necesseraly small parameter. Exact coupled partial differential equations up to first order in the frequencies and excitation energies are derived. The numerical integration of these eqations is left to a later stage. Nevertheless, in order to demonstrate the relation with the perturbation expansion the one-loop Lindhard function and screening are reproduced in the independent mode approximation of the evolution equation.

Confinement as crossover

The order parameter of confinement together with the haaron model of the QCD vacuum is reviewed and it is pointed out that confining forces are generated by the non-renormalizable, invariant Haar-measure vertices of the path integral. A hybrid model is proposed for the description of the crossover leading to the confining vacuum. This scenario suggests that the differences between the low and the high temperature phases of QCD should be looked for in the quark channels instead of the hadronic sector.

Modelling static impurities

A simple model is presented for the calculation of the quenched average over impurities which are rendered static by setting their mass equal to infinity. The path integral formalism of the second quantized theory contains annealed averages only. The similarity with the Gaussian quenched potential model is discussed.

An effective theory for conductance by symmetry breaking

An effective theory is suggested for the particle-anti particle and the particle-particle modes of strongly disordered electron systems. The effective theory is studied in the framework of the saddle point expansion and found to support a vacuum which is not invariant under translations in imaginary time. The Goldstone bosons of this symmetry breaking generate a pole in the density-density correlation function. The condensate of the auxiliary field corresponding to the particle-particle channel produces conductivity without relying on the long range fluctuations. The results are obtained for $d>1$.

Functional Callan-Symanzik equation

We describe a functional method to obtain the exact evolution equation of the effective action with a parameter of the bare theory. When this parameter happens to be the bare mass of the scalar field, we find a functional generalization of the Callan-Symanzik equations. Another possibility is when this parameter is the Planck constant and controls the amplitude of the fluctuations. We show the similarity of these equations with the Wilsonian renormalization group flows and also recover the usual one loop effective action.

Renormalization group for the internal space

The renormalization group method is a successive integration over the fluctuations which are ordered according to their length scale, a parameter in the external space. A different procedure is described, where the fluctuations are treated in a successive manner, as well, but their order is given by an internal space parameter, their amplitude. The differential version of the renormalization group equation is given which is the functional generalization of the Callan-Symanzik equation in one special case and resums the loop expansion in another one.

Periodic vacuum and particles in two dimensions

Different dynamical symmetry breaking patterns are explored for the two dimensional phi4 model with higher order derivative terms. The one-loop saddle point expansion predicts a rather involved phase structure and a new Gaussian critical line. This vacuum structure is corroborated by the Monte Carlo method, as well. Analogies with the structure of solids, the density wave phases and the effects of the quenched impurities are mentioned. The unitarity of the time evolution operator in real time is established by means of the reflection positivity.

Tree-level renormalization

It is shown in the framework of the N-component scalar model that the saddle point structure may generate non-trivial renormalization group flow. The spinodal phase separation can be described in this manner and a flat action is found as an exact result which is valid up to any order of the loop expansion. The correlation function is computed in a mean-field approximation.

Optimization of Renormalization Group Flow

Renormalization group flow equations for scalar lambda Phi^4 are generated using three classes of smooth smearing functions. Numerical results for the critical exponent nu in three dimensions are calculated by means of a truncated series expansion of the blocked potential. We demonstrate how the convergence of nu as a function of the order of truncation can be improved through a fine tuning of the smoothness of the smearing functions.

Path Integral for the Dirac Equation

A c-number path integral representation is constructed for the solution of the Dirac equation. The integration is over the real trajectories in the continuous three-space and other two canonical pairs of compact variables controlling the spin and the chirality flips.

Instability Induced Renormalization

It is pointed out that models with condensates have nontrivial renormalization group flow on the tree level. The infinitesimal form of the tree level renormalization group equation is obtained and solved numerically for the phi4 model in the symmetry broken phase. We find an attractive infrared fixed point that eliminates the metastable region and reproduces the Maxwell construction.

Renormalization Group Transformation for the Wave Function

The problem considered here is the determination of the hamiltonian of a first quantized nonrelativistic particle by the help of some measurements of the location with a finite resolution. The resulting hamiltonian depends on the resolution of the measuring device. This dependence is reproduced by the help of a blocking transformation on the wave function. The systems with quadratic hamiltonian are studied in details. The representation of the renormalization group in the space of observables is identified.

Global Renormalization Group

The motivation and the challenge in applying the renormalization group for systems with several scaling regimes is briefly outlined. The four dimensional $ϕ^4$ model serves as an example where a nontrivial low energy scaling regime is identified in the vicinity of the spinodal instability region. It is pointed out that the effective theory defined in the vicinity of the spinodal instability offers an amplification mechanism, a precursor of the condensation that can be used to explore nonuniversal forces at high energies.
