Competing crystallization pathways and cold crystallization kinetics in 10OS5 liquid crystal

The liquid crystalline 4-pentylphenyl-4'-decyloxythiobenzoate is investigated in various temperature programs for determination of crystallization kinetics and glassforming properties. The Avrami model, Augis-Bennett method and isoconversional method are used. Cooling at the 25-30 K/min rate results in formation of the glass of the tilted smectic Y phase with the herring-bone order within layers. Slower cooling leads to the partial or total (2 K/min) crystallization of the metastable Cr2 phase, which during subsequent heating or annealing in a proper temperature transforms to another Cr1 phase. Heating from the vitrified smectic Y leads to cold crystallization of the pure Cr1 phase or the Cr1/Cr2 mix. Both Cr1 and Cr2 are conformationally disordered crystal phases, which is indicated both by the melting entropy values and the dielectric spectra. The results demonstrate that the energy released during cold crystallization can be tuned by thermal history, highlighting 10OS5 as a candidate for thermal energy storage applications.

Transitions between liquid crystalline phases investigated by dielectric and infra-red spectroscopies

The liquid crystalline 11OS5 compound, forming the nematic phase and a few smectic phases, is investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and infra-red spectroscopy. The dielectric relaxation times, ionic conductivity, and positions of infra-red absorption bands corresponding to selected intra-molecular vibrations are determined as a function of temperature in the range from isotropic liquid to a crystal phase. The correlation coefficient matrix and k-means cluster analysis of infra-red spectra are tested for detection of phase transitions. The density-functional theory calculations are carried out for interpretation of experimental infra-red spectra. The performance of various basis sets and exchange-correlation functionals is compared, including both agreement of scaled calculated band positions with experimental values and computational time. The inter-molecular interactions in the crystal phase are inferred from the experimental IR spectra and density-functional theory calculations for dimers in head-to-head and head-to-tail configurations. The experimental temperature dependence of the C=O stretching band suggests that the head-to-tail configuration in a crystal phase is more likely. A significant slowing down of the flip-flop relaxation process is observed at the transition between the smectic C and hexagonal smectic X phases.

Structural investigation of the liquid crystalline phases of three homologues from the nOS5 series (n = 9, 10, 11) by X-ray diffraction

Polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry are used to determine the phase sequence of three liquid crystalline 4-pentylphenyl-4'-n-alkyloxythiobenzoates with n = 9, 10, 11. The X-ray diffraction method is applied for structural characterization of the liquid crystalline phases. The smectic layer spacing, tilt angle, average distance between the long axes of molecules and correlation length of the short-range order are determined as a function of temperature. For the crystal-like smectic phases with the hexagonal or herring-bone packing, the unit cell parameters are obtained. The presence of the tilted hexagonal phase for n = 10, 11 and tilted herring-bone phase for n = 9, 10 is indicated, although the direction of the tilt cannot be determined.
