Kink Form Factors

We use a recently constructed linearized soliton sector perturbation theory to calculate the form factors relevant to the elastic scattering of ultrarelativistic mesons off of nonrelativistic kinks. Both localized kink wave packets and also delocalized momentum eigenstate kinks are considered. In the delocalized case, the leading term is just the classical kink solution, as was found by Goldstone and Jackiw. The leading delocalized quantum correction agrees with that found by Gervais, Jevicki and Sakita in the $ϕ^4$ model and Weisz in the Sine-Gordon model. In the case of localized kink wave packets, some corrections are found which scale with the wave packet width, and so will be relevant for the coherent scattering of mesons off of kink wave packets.

Spectral Walls at One Loop

A spectral wall is a surface in a moduli space of classically BPS solitons where an internal excitation crosses the continuum mass threshold. It has recently been shown that spectral walls in classical field theory repel solitons whose corresponding internal excitations are excited. We investigate, for the first time, the fate of spectral walls in a quantum theory, calculating the instantaneous acceleration of a wave packet of classically BPS antikinks in the presence of an impurity. We find that, in the quantum theory, the antikinks are repelled even when the bound mode is not excited. Perhaps due to this repulsive force, the dramatic classical effects of the spectral wall are not seen in our quantum calculation.

Moving Kinks and Their Wave Packets

Recently a linearized perturbation theory has been formulated for soliton sectors of quantum field theories. While it is more economical than alternative formalisms, such as collective coordinates, it is currently limited to solitons which stay close to a base point, about which the theory is linearized. As a result, so far this formalism has only been applied to stationary solitons. In spite of this limitation, we construct kink states with fixed nonzero momenta and also moving, normalizable kink wave packets. The former are nonnormalizable, coherent superpositions of kinks at all spatial positions and are simultaneous eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and the momentum operator. The latter are localized about a single, moving classical solution. To understand the wave packets, we calculate several simple matrix elements.

Removing Tadpoles in a Soliton Sector

It has long been known that perturbative calculations can be performed in a soliton sector of a quantum field theory by using a soliton Hamiltonian, which is constructed from the defining Hamiltonian by shifting the field by the classical soliton solution. It is also known that even if tadpoles are eliminated in the vacuum sector, they remain in the soliton sector. In this note we show, in the case of quantum kinks at two loops, that the soliton sector tadpoles may be removed by adding certain quantum corrections to the classical solution used in this construction. Stated differently, the renormalization condition that the soliton sector tadpoles vanish may be satisfied by renormalizing the soliton solution.

Proton and deuteron mass radii from near-threshold $ϕ$-meson photoproduction

We analyze the exclusive $ϕ$-meson photoproduction on both hydrogen and deuterium targets based on the published data of CLAS, SAPHIR and LEPS collaborations. A dipole-form scalar gravitational form factor is applied to describe the $|t|$-dependence of the differential cross section. Based on the average of all the near-threshold data from CLAS, SAPHIR and LEPS, we find that the proton and deuteron mass radii are $0.75 \pm 0.02$ fm and $1.95 \pm 0.19$ fm respectively. The coherent and near-threshold quarkonium photoproduction seems to be sensitive to the radius of the hadronic system. The vector-meson-dominance model together with a low-energy QCD theorem well describe the data of near-threshold $ϕ$ photoproduction on the hadronic systems.

The Two-Loop $ϕ^4$ Kink Mass

At one loop, quantum kinks are described by a free theory. The nonlinearity and so the interesting phenomenology arrives at two loops, where, for example, internal excitations couple to continuum excitations. We calculate the two-loop mass of a scalar kink. Unlike previous calculations, we include a counterterm which cancels the vacuum energy density at this order, so that our result for the kink mass is finite even when the vacuum energy density is nonzero. This allows us to apply our result to the $ϕ^4$ kink, for which we obtain a two-loop mass contribution of $0.0126λ/m$ in terms of the coupling $λ$ and the meson mass $m$ evaluated at the minimum of the potential.

Evidence for the Unbinding of the $ϕ^4$ Kink's Shape Mode

The $ϕ^4$ double-well theory admits a kink solution, whose rich phenomenology is strongly affected by the existence of a single bound excitation called the shape mode. We find that the leading quantum correction to the energy needed to excite the shape mode is $-0.115567λ/m$ in terms of the coupling $λ/4$ and the meson mass $m$ evaluated at the minimum of the potential. On the other hand, the correction to the continuum threshold is $-0.433λ/m$. A naive extrapolation to finite coupling then suggests that the shape mode melts into the continuum at the modest coupling of $λ/4\sim 0.106 m^2$, where the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is still broken.

The $ϕ^4$ Kink Mass at Two Loops

The two-loop correction to the mass of the $ϕ^4$ kink is $0.0126λ/m$ in terms of the coupling $λ$ and the meson mass $m$ evaluated at the minimum of the potential. This is calculated using a recently proposed alternative to collective coordinates. Both the kink energy and the vacuum energy are IR divergent at this order. To cancel the divergence, the two energy densities are subtracted before integrating over space, or equivalently a finite counterterm is added to the Hamiltonian density to cancel the vacuum energy density. All spatial integrals are performed analytically. However in the last step of our calculation, integrals over virtual momenta are performed numerically.

Excited Kinks as Quantum States

At one loop, quantum kinks are described by a sum of quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians, and so their spectra are known exactly. We find the first correction beyond one loop to the quantum states corresponding to kinks with an excited bound or unbound normal mode, and also the corresponding two-loop correction to the energy cost of exciting the normal mode. In the case of unbound normal modes, this correction is equal to sum of the corresponding nonrelativistic kinetic energy plus the usual one-loop correction to the mass of the corresponding plane wave in the absence of a kink. We also sketch a diagrammatic method for such calculations.

An Alternative to Collective Coordinates

Collective coordinates provide a powerful tool for separating collective and elementary excitations, allowing both to be treated in the full quantum theory. The price is a canonical transformation which leads to a complicated starting point for subsequent calculations. Sometimes the collective behavior of a soliton is simple but nontrivial, and one is interested in the elementary excitations. We show that in this case an alternative prescription suffices, in which the canonical transformation is not necessary. The use of a nonperturbative operator which creates a soliton state allows the theory to be constructed perturbatively in terms of the soliton normal modes. We show how translation invariance may be perturbatively imposed. We apply this to construct the two-loop ground state of an arbitrary scalar kink.

Two-Loop Scalar Kinks

At one loop, quantum kinks are described by a sum of quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians, and the ground state is just the product of the oscillator ground states. Two-loop kink masses are only known in integrable and supersymmetric cases and two-loop states have never been found. We find the two-loop kink mass and explicitly construct the two-loop kink ground state in a scalar field theory with an arbitrary nonderivative potential. We use a coherent state operator which maps the vacuum sector to the kink sector, allowing all states to be treated with a single Hamiltonian which needs to be renormalized only once, eliminating the need for regulator matching conditions. Our calculation is greatly simplified by a recently introduced alternative to collective coordinates, in which the kink momentum is fixed perturbatively.

Constructing Quantum Soliton States Despite Zero Modes

In classical Lorentz-invariant field theories, localized soliton solutions necessarily break translation symmetry. In the corresponding quantum field theories, the position is quantized and, if the theory is not compactified, they have continuous spectra. It has long been appreciated that ordinary perturbation theory is not applicable to continuum states. Here we argue that, as the Hamiltonian and momentum operators commute, the soliton ground state can nonetheless be found in perturbation theory if one first imposes that the total momentum vanishes. As an illustration, we find the subleading quantum correction to the ground state of the Sine-Gordon soliton.

Measuring Entangled Neutrino States in a Toy Model QFT

Localized wave packet treatments of neutrino oscillations by various groups lead to mutually inconsistent predictions. The neutrino wave packet description arises as an approximate substitute for the evolution of an entangled state which is not localized. The disagreements arise from qualitative differences in the framework which are not specific to electroweak interactions, and so have analogues in simpler models. Therefore in this note we introduce a toy model which allows one to explicitly test these predictions while consistently keeping track of the entanglement of the neutrinos and the source particles. Our study is robust as we use only the Schrodinger picture evolution equations on the entangled state, which are solved explicitly without recourse to the wave packet approximation.

Normal Ordering Normal Modes

In a soliton sector of a quantum field theory, it is often convenient to expand the quantum fields in terms of normal modes. Normal mode creation and annihilation operators can be normal ordered, and their normal ordered products have vanishing expectation values in the one-loop soliton ground state. The Hamiltonian of the theory, however, is usually normal ordered in the basis of operators which create plane waves. In this paper we find the Wick map between the two normal orderings. For concreteness, we restrict our attention to Schrodinger picture scalar fields in 1+1 dimensions, although we expect that our results readily generalize beyond this case. We find that plane wave ordered $n$-point functions of fields are sums of terms which factorize into $j$-point functions of zero modes, breather and continuum normal modes. We find a recursion formula in $j$ and, for products of fields at the same point, we solve the recursion formula at all $j$.

The Origin of Proton Mass from J/${\rm Ψ}$ Photo-production Data

The trace of the stress tensor characterizes the transformation of a theory under rescaling. In quantum chromodynamics (QCD), this trace contains contributions from the bare masses of the quarks and also from a purely quantum effect, called the QCD trace anomaly. It affects all masses in the theory. We present an estimation of the QCD trace anomaly from the near-threshold J/${\rm Ψ}$ photo-production data of the GlueX experiment, at JLab. We apply a vector meson dominance model to describe the photo-production of J/${\rm Ψ}$ and a running strong coupling which includes the nonperturbative effects in the low $μ^2$ region. Despite the large uncertainty, we find that the experimental data favors a small value of the trace anomaly parameter $b=0.07\pm 0.17$. We report the resulting proton mass decompositions at $μ^2=0.41$ GeV$^2$ and $μ^2=4$ GeV$^2$.

The Ground State of the Sine-Gordon Soliton

At one loop, we provide an explicit formula for the ground state of the one-soliton sector in the Sine-Gordon theory. The state is given in the basis of eigenstates of the field operator, or equivalently as a Schrodinger wave functional. The formula readily generalizes to other solitons in other models and as an example we also provide the ground state of the kink in the (1+1)-dimensional $ϕ^4$ double well.

Well-Defined Quantum Soliton Masses Without Supersymmetry

22 years ago, Rebhan and van Nieuwenhuizen showed that loop corrections to the mass of a quantum soliton depend on a choice of matching condition for the regulators of the vacuum and one-soliton sector Hamiltonians. In supersymmetric theories, regulators which preserve supersymmetry yield the correct quantum corrections, as these are dictated by supersymmetry. However, in a general theory it is not known which matching condition yields the correct mass. We use the leading term in the operator that creates the soliton to construct the regulated one-soliton sector Hamiltonian from that of the vacuum sector, providing the correct matching condition. As an application, we derive a simple formula for the one-loop mass of a kink in a large class of 1+1 dimensional scalar field theories and also, at one loop, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian which describes the kink excitations.

A Sterile Neutrino Search at compact materials irradiation facility

The compact material irradiation facility (CMIF) is a current project in China that will provide a compact deuteron-beryllium neutron source. The target of this facility will be an intense and compact Isotope Decay-At-Rest (IsoDAR) neutrino source. In this paper, we propose to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis using CMIF as the neutrino source. At CMIF platform, the electron antineutrino production rate can be up to $2.0\times 10^{19}$ per day. When paired with an 80 t liquid scintillator detector to study short baseline electron antineutrino disappearance, the inverse beta decay (IBD) event rate is large enough to investigate the parameter ranges of interest for neutrino anomalies. Our sensitivity analysis shows that a short baseline experiment at this platform will provide a very competitive sterile neutrino search, especially in the high-$Δm^2$ region ($Δm^2 >10\,\text{eV}^2$).
