Nivat's Conjecture and Pattern Complexity in Algebraic Subshifts

We study Nivat's conjecture on algebraic subshifts and prove that in some of them every low complexity configuration is periodic. This is the case in the Ledrappier subshift (the 3-dot system) and, more generally, in all two-dimensional algebraic subshifts over $\mathbb{F}_p$ defined by a polynomial without line polynomial factors in more than one direction. We also find an algebraic subshift that is defined by a product of two line polynomials that has this property (the 4-dot system) and another one that does not.

Sequentializing cellular automata

We study the problem of sequentializing a cellular automaton without introducing any intermediate states, and only performing reversible permutations on the tape. We give a decidable characterization of cellular automata which can be written as a single left-to-right sweep of a bijective rule from left to right over an infinite tape.

Conjugacy of one-dimensional one-sided cellular automata is undecidable

Two cellular automata are strongly conjugate if there exists a shift-commuting conjugacy between them. We prove that the following two sets of pairs $(F,G)$ of one-dimensional one-sided cellular automata over a full shift are recursively inseparable: (i) pairs where $F$ has strictly larger topological entropy than $G$, and (ii) pairs that are strongly conjugate and have zero topological entropy. Because there is no factor map from a lower entropy system to a higher entropy one, and there is no embedding of a higher entropy system into a lower entropy system, we also get as corollaries that the following decision problems are undecidable: Given two one-dimensional one-sided cellular automata $F$ and $G$ over a full shift: Are $F$ and $G$ conjugate? Is $F$ a factor of $G$? Is $F$ a subsystem of $G$? All of these are undecidable in both strong and weak variants (whether the homomorphism is required to commute with the shift or not, respectively). It also immediately follows that these results hold for one-dimensional two-sided cellular automata.

Cellular Automata and Powers of $p/q$

We consider one-dimensional cellular automata $F_{p,q}$ which multiply numbers by $p/q$ in base $pq$ for relatively prime integers $p$ and $q$. By studying the structure of traces with respect to $F_{p,q}$ we show that for $p\geq 2q-1$ (and then as a simple corollary for $p>q>1$) there are arbitrarily small finite unions of intervals which contain the fractional parts of the sequence $ξ(p/q)^n$, ($n=0,1,2,\dots$) for some $ξ>0$. To the other direction, by studying the measure theoretical properties of $F_{p,q}$, we show that for $p>q>1$ there are finite unions of intervals approximating the unit interval arbitrarily well which don't contain the fractional parts of the whole sequence $ξ(p/q)^n$ for any $ξ>0$.

Post-surjectivity and balancedness of cellular automata over groups

We discuss cellular automata over arbitrary finitely generated groups. We call a cellular automaton post-surjective if for any pair of asymptotic configurations, every pre-image of one is asymptotic to a pre-image of the other. The well known dual concept is pre-injectivity: a cellular automaton is pre-injective if distinct asymptotic configurations have distinct images. We prove that pre-injective, post-surjective cellular automata are reversible. Moreover, on sofic groups, post-surjectivity alone implies reversibility. We also prove that reversible cellular automata over arbitrary groups are balanced, that is, they preserve the uniform measure on the configuration space.

Finite generating sets for reversible gate sets under general conservation laws

It is well-known that the Toffoli gate and the negation gate together yield a universal gate set, in the sense that every permutation of $\{0,1\}^n$ can be implemented as a composition of these gates. Since every bit operation that does not use all of the bits performs an even permutation, we need to use at least one auxiliary bit to perform every permutation, and it is known that one bit is indeed enough. Without auxiliary bits, all even permutations can be implemented. We generalize these results to non-binary logic: For any finite set $A$, a finite gate set can generate all even permutations of $A^n$ for all $n$, without any auxiliary symbols. This directly implies the previously published result that a finite gate set can generate all permutations of $A^n$ when the cardinality of $A$ is odd, and that one auxiliary symbol is necessary and sufficient to obtain all permutations when the cardinality of $A$ is even. We also consider the conservative case, that is, those permutations of $A^n$ that preserve the weight of the input word. The weight is the vector that records how many times each symbol occurs in the word or, more generally, the image of the word under a fixed monoid homomorphism from $A^*$ to a commutative monoid. It turns out that no finite conservative gate set can, for all $n$, implement all conservative even permutations of $A^n$ without auxiliary bits. But we provide a finite gate set that can implement all those conservative permutations that are even within each weight class of $A^n$.

An Algebraic Geometric Approach to Nivat's Conjecture

We study multidimensional configurations (infinite words) and subshifts of low pattern complexity using tools of algebraic geometry. We express the configuration as a multivariate formal power series over integers and investigate the setup when there is a non-trivial annihilating polynomial: a non-zero polynomial whose formal product with the power series is zero. Such annihilator exists, for example, if the number of distinct patterns of some finite shape $D$ in the configuration is at most the size $|D|$ of the shape. This is our low pattern complexity assumption. We prove that the configuration must be a sum of periodic configurations over integers, possibly with unbounded values. As a specific application of the method we obtain an asymptotic version of the well-known Nivat's conjecture: we prove that any two-dimensional, non-periodic configuration can satisfy the low pattern complexity assumption with respect to only finitely many distinct rectangular shapes $D$.

The group of reversible Turing machines

We consider Turing machines as actions over configurations in $Σ^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$ which only change them locally around a marked position that can move and carry a particular state. In this setting we study the monoid of Turing machines and the group of reversible Turing machines. We also study two natural subgroups, namely the group of finite-state automata, which generalizes the topological full groups studied in the theory of orbit-equivalence, and the group of oblivious Turing machines whose movement is independent of tape contents, which generalizes lamplighter groups and has connections to the study of universal reversible logical gates. Our main results are that the group of Turing machines in one dimension is neither amenable nor residually finite, but is locally embeddable in finite groups, and that the torsion problem is decidable for finite-state automata in dimension one, but not in dimension two.

Strongly Universal Reversible Gate Sets

It is well-known that the Toffoli gate and the negation gate together yield a universal gate set, in the sense that every permutation of $\{0,1\}^n$ can be implemented as a composition of these gates. Since every bit operation that does not use all of the bits performs an even permutation, we need to use at least one auxiliary bit to perform every permutation, and it is known that one bit is indeed enough. Without auxiliary bits, all even permutations can be implemented. We generalize these results to non-binary logic: If $A$ is a finite set of odd cardinality then a finite gate set can generate all permutations of $A^n$ for all $n$, without any auxiliary symbols. If the cardinality of $A$ is even then, by the same argument as above, only even permutations of $A^n$ can be implemented for large $n$, and we show that indeed all even permutations can be obtained from a finite universal gate set. We also consider the conservative case, that is, those permutations of $A^n$ that preserve the weight of the input word. The weight is the vector that records how many times each symbol occurs in the word. It turns out that no finite conservative gate set can, for all $n$, implement all conservative even permutations of $A^n$ without auxiliary bits. But we provide a finite gate set that can implement all those conservative permutations that are even within each weight class of $A^n$.

Statistical Mechanics of Surjective Cellular Automata

Reversible cellular automata are seen as microscopic physical models, and their states of macroscopic equilibrium are described using invariant probability measures. We establish a connection between the invariance of Gibbs measures and the conservation of additive quantities in surjective cellular automata. Namely, we show that the simplex of shift-invariant Gibbs measures associated to a Hamiltonian is invariant under a surjective cellular automaton if and only if the cellular automaton conserves the Hamiltonian. A special case is the (well-known) invariance of the uniform Bernoulli measure under surjective cellular automata, which corresponds to the conservation of the trivial Hamiltonian. As an application, we obtain results indicating the lack of (non-trivial) Gibbs or Markov invariant measures for "sufficiently chaotic" cellular automata. We discuss the relevance of the randomization property of algebraic cellular automata to the problem of approach to macroscopic equilibrium, and pose several open questions. As an aside, a shift-invariant pre-image of a Gibbs measure under a pre-injective factor map between shifts of finite type turns out to be always a Gibbs measure. We provide a sufficient condition under which the image of a Gibbs measure under a pre-injective factor map is not a Gibbs measure. We point out a potential application of pre-injective factor maps as a tool in the study of phase transitions in statistical mechanical models.

Undecidable properties of self-affine sets and multi-tape automata

We study the decidability of the topological properties of some objects coming from fractal geometry. We prove that having empty interior is undecidable for the sets defined by two-dimensional graph-directed iterated function systems. These results are obtained by studying a particular class of self-affine sets associated with multi-tape automata. We first establish the undecidability of some language-theoretical properties of such automata, which then translate into undecidability results about their associated self-affine sets.

Consistency of multidimensional combinatorial substitutions

Multidimensional combinatorial substitutions are rules that replace symbols by finite patterns of symbols in $\mathbb Z^d$. We focus on the case where the patterns are not necessarily rectangular, which requires a specific description of the way they are glued together in the image by a substitution. Two problems can arise when defining a substitution in such a way: it can fail to be consistent, and the patterns in an image by the substitution might overlap. We prove that it is undecidable whether a two-dimensional substitution is consistent or overlapping, and we provide practical algorithms to decide these properties in some particular cases.

Trace Complexity of Chaotic Reversible Cellular Automata

Delvenne, Kůrka and Blondel have defined new notions of computational complexity for arbitrary symbolic systems, and shown examples of effective systems that are computationally universal in this sense. The notion is defined in terms of the trace function of the system, and aims to capture its dynamics. We present a Devaney-chaotic reversible cellular automaton that is universal in their sense, answering a question that they explicitly left open. We also discuss some implications and limitations of the construction.

Tiling Problems on Baumslag-Solitar groups

We exhibit a weakly aperiodic tile set for Baumslag-Solitar groups, and prove that the domino problem is undecidable on these groups. A consequence of our construction is the existence of an arecursive tile set on Baumslag-Solitar groups.

On Continuous Weighted Finite Automata

We investigate the continuity of the ω-functions and real functions defined by weighted finite automata (WFA). We concentrate on the case of average preserving WFA. We show that every continuous ω-function definable by some WFA can be defined by an average preserving WFA and then characterize minimal average preserving WFA whose ω-function or ω-function and real function are continuous. We obtain several algorithmic reductions for WFA-related decision problems. In particular, we show that deciding whether the ω-function and real function of an average preserving WFA are both continuous is computationally equivalent to deciding stability of a set of matrices. We also present a method for constructing WFA that compute continuous real functions.
