Mechanical-microstructural correlation on SPS-fabricated NiTi alloy

Mechanical properties and dynamical mechanical analysis were performed on compact Spark Plasma Sinter samples. It has been observed that the sample with less porosity reflects the behavior of superelasticity response. Other samples show failure during first cycles that may be due to porosity. Compaction of metallic powder is one of the standard procedures in the field of powder metallurgy for the fabrication of bulk material. Consolidation of the sample as a function of sintering temperature plays a crucial role in the final compaction mechanism. However, the evolution of compaction, microstructure, phase transformation and mechanical properties as a function of sintering temperature is hardly disclosed. In this work, a correlation has been established between mechanical and microstructural properties of compact samples. The maximum compactness and the corresponding microstructure, porosity, texture, phase transformation, grain size, hardness, mechanical properties of compact samples were discussed. The research establishes mechanical properties-structure correlations for compaction of NiTi alloy in advanced engineering applications.

HVAF Spraying of NiTi Coatings: Microstructure, Phase Transformation and Shape Memory Behavior

Depositing various coatings on surface of engineering components with the aim to improve their performance concerning wear, corrosion, friction and thermal protection is already a standard practice. Depositing metallic NiTi shape memory alloy coatings may be a viable alternative for hard ceramic coatings. NiTi coatings offer additional benefits originating from unique functional thermomechanical properties. However, fabrication of thick NiTi coatings turned out to be difficult. Standard electroplating and laser cladding methods are not suitable for NiTi the most widely used plasma spray methods tend to produce chemically inhomogeneous coatings that do not transform martensitically, cold sprayed NiTi coatings suffer from poor adhesion to the substrates. In this work we report on first ever successful fabrication of thick NiTi coatings (100-300 um) that display functional thermomechanical properties and simultaneously show very good adherence to the substrate. We used high velocity air fuel thermal spray method to fabricate NiTi coatings deposited on mild steel using four different sets of processing parameters. Chemical composition, porosity, microstructure, phase transformation and functional thermomechanical properties of the NiTi coatings were evaluated. Although the coatings contain inhomogeneous microstructure, voids, oxide particles, high density of dislocation defects and internal stress, they undergo martensitic transformation upon cooling and or mechanical loading. As sprayed NiTi coatings need to be annealed to display functional thermomechanical properties. Despite their limited tensile strength, the coatings displayed thermal actuation in 3 point bending tests and shape memory effects in nanoindentation and scratch tests.

Coherent regime of Kapitza-Dirac effect with electrons

Electron matter waves coherently diffract when passing through a periodic structure of light formed by two interfering light waves. In this so-called Kapitza-Dirac effect, the electron momentum changes due to absorption and emission of photons via stimulated Compton scattering. Until now, the effect has only been observed with low energy electrons due to the small momentum of a visible photon compared to the momentum of high energy electron leading to diffraction angles of 10^(-4) rad or smaller. We report on the observation of the Kapitza-Dirac effect in a scanning electron microscope using high energy (20 and 30 keV) electrons with de-Broglie wavelengths of 9 pm and 7 pm, respectively. The photon sidebands in the electron transverse momentum spectrum are detected in the convergent beam diffraction geometry using spatial filtering. As the coupling strength between the electrons and the light field increases, the sideband populations exhibit coherent, reversible oscillations among diffraction orders. The effect can serve as a coherent electron beam-splitter or a phase-plate in various types of electron microscopes.

Elastic constants of single-crystalline NiTi studied by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy

Contactless, laser-based resonant ultrasound spectroscopy was utilized to monitor changes in elastic properties in single-crystalline NiTi shape memory alloy. It was observed that the elastic behavior of the temperature-induced B19$^\prime$ martensite, which is formed by a fine mixture of variants, adopts the symmetry elements of the parent austenite phase, and thus, the changes over the transformation temperature can be represented by the temperature evolution of three cubic elastic coefficients. The experiments confirm that the transition during the cooling run is preceded by pronounced softening of the $c_{44}$ elastic coefficient, which leads to nearly complete vanishing of elastic anisotropy prior to the transition. Below the transition, this coefficient remains soft, and the character of anisotropy switches from $c_{44}/c^\prime>1$ to $c_{44}/c^\prime<1$. We rationalize this behavior from the mechanical instability of the B19$^\prime$ lattice with respect to shears along the (001)$_{B19^\prime}$ plane, which is known from first-principles calculations.

Twinning in ferromagnetic Heusler Rh2MnSb epitaxial thin films

Epitaxially grown full Heusler alloy of Rh2MnSb thin films were prepared for the first time using DC magnetron sputtering. The films were deposited on MgO [001] substrates with a deposition temperature of 600°C, 700°C, and 800°C. We report the structural, morphological, optical, magneto-optical, and magnetic properties of the films with a 200 nm nominal thickness. The grown-at-600°C film was close to stoichiometric and exhibited L21 ordering typical for Heusler alloys. The single-phase Rh2MnSb film had a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters close to the bulk material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the metallic character of the film free from contamination. The tetragonal films exhibited discernible regular twinning with the majority of twin domains with the c-axis perpendicular to the surface due to a substrate constraint. The twin formation was studied by atomic force and transmission electron microscopy and by X-ray diffraction. Magnetic measurements showed TC of about 220-275 K and saturation magnetization of about 55 emu/g, close to the bulk material. Magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements of the film prepared at 600 °C affirmed paramagnetic behavior at room temperature and suggested the half-metallic behavior. The observed properties highlight the potential for further investigations of Rh2MnSb's thin films, focusing on compositional and structural control.

Laue Indexing with Optimal Transport

Laue tomography experiments retrieve the positions and orientations of crystal grains in a polycrystalline samples from diffraction patterns recorded at multiple viewing angles. The use of a broad wavelength spectrum beam can greatly reduce the experimental time, but poses a difficult challenge for the indexing of diffraction peaks in polycrystalline samples; the information about the wavelength of these Bragg peaks is absent and the diffraction patterns from multiple grains are superimposed. To date, no algorithms exist capable of indexing samples with more than about 500 grains efficiently. To address this need we present a novel method: Laue indexing with Optimal Transport (LaueOT). We create a probabilistic description of the multi-grain indexing problem and propose a solution based on Sinkhorn Expectation-Maximization method, which allows to efficiently find the maximum of the likelihood thanks to the assignments being calculated using Optimal Transport. This is a non-convex optimization problem, where the orientations and positions of grains are optimized simultaneously with grain-to-spot assignments, while robustly handling the outliers. The selection of initial prototype grains to consider in the optimization problem are also calculated within the Optimal Transport framework. LaueOT can rapidly and effectively index up to 1000 grains on a single large memory GPU within less than 30 minutes. We demonstrate the performance of LaueOT on simulations with variable numbers of grains, spot position measurement noise levels, and outlier fractions. The algorithm recovers the correct number of grains even for high noise levels and up to 70% outliers in our experiments. We compare the results of indexing with LaueOT to existing algorithms both on synthetic and real neutron diffraction data from well-characterized samples.
