Entanglement and objectivity in pure dephasing models

We study the relation between the emergence of objectivity and qubit-environment entanglement generation. We find that although entanglement with the unobserved environments is irrelevant (since sufficiently strong decoherence can occur regardless), entanglement with the observed environments is crucial. In fact, the appearance of an objective qubit-observed-environment state is strictly impossible if their joint evolution does not lead to entanglement. Furthermore, if a single observer has access to a single environment (no macrofractions) then the required orthogonality of the observed environmental states comes only as a consequence of the system-enviornment state becoming strongly entangled (maximally entangled for the given initial occupation of the qubit if the environmental state is initially pure).

Decoherence of spin registers revisited

We revisit decoherence process of a qubit register interacting with a thermal bosonic bath. We generalize the previous studies by considering not only the register's behavior but also of a part of its environment. In particular, we are interested in information flow from the register to the environment, which we describe using recently introduced multipartite quantum state structures called Spectrum Broadcast Structures. Working in two specific cases of: i) two-qubit register and ii) collective decoherence, we identify the regimes where the environment acquires almost complete information about the register state. We also study in more detail the interesting causal aspects, related to the finite propagation time of the field disturbances between the qubits. Finally, we describe quantum state structures which appear due to the presence of protected spaces.

Redundant information encoding in QED during decoherence

Decoherence processes in quantum electrodynamics due to neglecting either the radiation [L. Landau, Z. Phys. 45, 430 (1927)] or the charged matter [N. Bohr and L. Rosenfeld, K. danske vidensk. Selsk, Math.-Fys. Medd. XII, 8 (1933)] have been studied from the dawn of the theory. However what happens in between, when a part of the radiation may be observed, as is the case in many real-life situations, has not been analyzed yet. We present such an analysis for a non-relativistic, point-like charge and thermal radiation. In the dipole approximation, we solve the dynamics and show that there is a regime where, despite of the noise, the observed field carries away almost perfect and hugely redundant information about the charge momentum. We analyze a partial charge-field state and show that it approaches a so called spectrum broadcast structure.

System information propagation for spin structures

We study in details decoherence process of a spin register, coupled to a spin environment. We use recently developed methods of information transfer study in open quantum systems to analyze information flow between the register and its environment. We show that there are regimes when not only the register decoheres effectively to a classical bit string, but this bit string is redundantly encoded in the environment, making it available to multiple observations. This process is more subtle than in a case of a single qubit due to possible presence of protected subspaces: Decoherence free subspaces and, so called, orthogonalization free subspaces. We show that this leads to a rich structure of coherence loss/protection in the asymptotic state of the register and a part of its environment. We formulate a series of examples illustrating these structures.
