Einstein and Yang-Mills implies conformal Yang-Mills

There exist conformally invariant, higher-derivative, variational analogs of the Yang-Mills condition for connections on vector bundles over a conformal manifold of even dimension greater than or equal to six. We give a compact formula for these analogs and prove that they are a strict weakening of the Yang-Mills condition with respect to an Einstein metric. We also show that the conformal Yang-Mills condition for the tractor connection of an even dimensional conformal manifold is equivalent to vanishing of its Fefferman-Graham obstruction tensor. This result uses that the tractor connection on a Poincaré-Einstein manifold is itself Yang-Mills.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann Map for Poincaré-Einstein Fillings

We study the non-linear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Poincaré-Einstein filling problem. For even dimensional manifolds the range of this non-local map is described in terms of a rank two "Dirichlet-to Neumann tensor" along the boundary determined by the Poincaré-Einstein metric. This tensor is proportional to the variation of renormalized volume along a path of Poincaré-Einstein metrics. We construct natural "Dirichlet-to-Neumann hypersurface invariants" that are conformally invariant and recover all Dirichlet-to-Neumann tensors. We give an explicit formula for these hypersurface invariants and use a new vanishing result for odd order $T$-curvatures to show that they are the unique, natural conformal hypersurface invariant of transverse order equaling the boundary dimension. We also construct such conformally invariant Dirichlet-to-Neumann hypersurface invariants for Poincaré-Einstein fillings for odd dimensional manifolds with conformally flat boundary.

Asymptotia of Kerr-de Sitter Black Holes

Exterior geometries of physical black holes are believed to asymptotically approach the Kerr--de Sitter spacetime at late times. A characteristic feature of that vacuum Einstein solution is the presence of a hidden symmetry generated by a closed conformal Killing--Yano tensor. Using this symmetry and modern conformal geometry technology, we find necessary conditions for generic solutions to asymptotically approach the Kerr--de Sitter metric. Further, we constrain the admissible form of the geometric free data on the conformal infinity giving rise to this family of spacetimes and constrain it in terms of the stress-energy tensor.

Boundary Curvature Scalars on Conformally Compact Manifolds

We introduce a sequence of conformally invariant scalar curvature quantities, defined along the conformal infinity of a conformally compact (CC) manifold, that measure the failure of a CC metric to have constant negative scalar curvature in the interior, i.e. its failure to solve the singular Yamabe problem. Indeed, these "CC boundary curvature scalars" compute canonical expansion coefficients for singular Yamabe metrics. Residues of their poles yield obstructions to smooth solutions to the singular Yamabe problem and thus, in particular, give an alternate derivation of generalized Willmore invariants. Moreover, in a given dimension, the critical CC boundary scalar characterizes the image of a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the singular Yamabe problem. We give explicit formulae for the first five CC boundary curvature scalars required for a global study of four dimensional singular Yamabe metrics, as well as asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes.

Stress and Geometry for Isotropic Singularities

We develop the mathematics needed to treat the interaction of geometry and stress at any isotropic spacetime singularity. This enables us to handle the Einstein equations at the initial singularity and characterize allowed general relativistic stress-energy tensors. Their leading behaviors are dictated by an initial hypersurface conformal embedding. We also show that an isotropic Big Bang determines a canonical non-singular metric on and about the initial hypersurface as well as a cosmological time. This assigns a volume and energy to the initial point singularity.

New spinorial mass-quasilocal angular momentum inequality for initial data with marginally future trapped surface

We prove a new geometric inequality that relates the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass of initial data to a quasilocal angular momentum of a marginally future trapped surface inner boundary. The inequality is expressed in terms of a 1-spinor, which satisfies an intrinsic first-order Dirac-type equation. Furthermore, we show that if the initial data is axisymmetric, then the divergence-free vector used to define the quasilocal angular momentum cannot be a Killing field of the generic boundary.

New spinorial approach to mass inequalities for black holes in general relativity

A new spinorial strategy for the construction of geometric inequalities involving the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass of black hole systems in general relativity is presented. This approach is based on a second order elliptic equation (the approximate twistor equation) for a valence 1 Weyl spinor. This has the advantage over other spinorial approaches to the construction of geometric inequalities based on the Sen-Witten-Dirac equation that it allows to specify boundary conditions for the two components of the spinor. This greater control on the boundary data has the potential of giving rise to new geometric inequalities involving the mass. In particular, it is shown that the mass is bounded from below by an integral functional over a marginally outer trapped surface (MOTS) which depends on a freely specifiable valence 1 spinor. From this main inequality, by choosing the free data in an appropriate way, one obtains a new nontrivial bounds of the mass in terms of the inner expansion of the MOTS. The analysis makes use of a new formalism for the $1+1+2$ decomposition of spinorial equations.

Bach equation and the matching of spacetimes in conformal cyclic cosmology models

We consider the problem of matching two spacetimes, the previous and present aeons, in the Conformal Cyclic Cosmology model. The common boundary between them inherits two sets of constraints -- one for each solution of the Einstein field equations extended to the conformal boundaries. The previous aeon is assumed to be an asymptotically de Sitter spacetime, so the standard conformal formulation of the Einstein field equations suffice to derive the constraints on the future null infinity. For the future aeon, which is supposed to evolve from an initial singularity, they are obtained with the use of the Bach equation. This equation is regular at the past conformal infinity for conformally flat and conformally Einstein spacetimes, so we will mostly focus on them here. An example of the electrovacuum spacetime which does not fall into this class and has regular conformal Bach tensor will be discussed in the appendix.

Asymptotically Hyperbolic Einstein Constraint Equations with Apparent Horizon Boundary and the Penrose Inequality for Perturbations of Schwarzschild-AdS

We prove the existence of asymptotically hyperbolic solutions to the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with a marginally outer trapped boundary of positive mean curvature, using the constant mean curvature conformal method. As an application of this result, we verify the Penrose inequality for certain perturbations of Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter black hole initial data.

Higher fundamental forms of the conformal boundary of asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes

We provide a partial characterization of the conformal infinity of asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes by deriving constraints that relate the asymptotics of the stress-energy tensor with conformal geometric data. The latter is captured using recently defined objects, called higher conformal fundamental forms. For the boundary hypersurface, these generalize to higher order the trace-free part of the second form.

On the conformal transformation between two anisotropic fluid spacetimes

We investigate the necessary conditions for the two spacetimes, which are solutions to the Einstein field equations with an anisotropic matter source, to be related to each other by means of a conformal transformation. As a result, we obtain that if one of such spacetimes is a generalization of the Robertson-Walker solution with vanishing acceleration and vorticity, then the other one has to be in this class as well, i.e. the conformal factor will be a constant function on the hypersurfaces orthogonal to the fluid flow lines. The evolution equation for this function appears naturally as a direct consequence of the conformal transformation of the Ricci tensor.

The Penrose inequality for perturbations of the Schwarzschild initial data

We show that in the conformally flat case the Penrose inequality is satisfied for the Schwarzschild initial data with a small addition of the axially symmetric traceless exterior curvature. In this class the inequality is saturated only for data related to special sections of the Schwarzschild spacetime.

Optical drift effects in general relativity

We consider the question of determining the optical drift effects in general relativity, i.e. the rate of change of the apparent position, redshift, Jacobi matrix, angular distance and luminosity distance of a distant object as registered by an observer in an arbitrary spacetime. We present a fully relativistic and covariant approach, in which the problem is reduced to a hierarchy of ODE's solved along the line of sight. The 4-velocities and 4-accelerations of the observer and the emitter and the geometry of the spacetime along the line of sight constitute the input data. We build on the standard relativistic geometric optics formalism and extend it to include the time derivatives of the observables. In the process we obtain two general, non-perturbative relations: the first one between the gravitational lensing, represented by the Jacobi matrix, and the apparent position drift, also called the cosmic parallax, and the second one between the apparent position drift and the redshift drift. The applications of the results include the theoretical study of the drift effects of cosmological origin (so-called real-time cosmology) in numerical or exact Universe models.

Optical properties of self-similar structure in Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model

We explore the effects coming from the nested structures on propagation of radial light rays going through them in the simple self-similar configuration containing pairs of voids and overdense regions. Each pair can be described with the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi metric and is composed of interior dust ball and exterior Schwarzschild region. A relation between the redshift and amount of nested pairs is studied numerically in order to answer a question whether a strong relativistic effect can be obtained when every component of the structure can be described by the weak field approximation of general relativity.

On a remarkable electromagnetic field in the Einstein Universe

We present a time-dependent solution of the Maxwell equations in the Einstein universe, whose electric and magnetic fields, as seen by the stationary observers, are aligned with the Clifford parallels of the $3$-sphere $S^3$. The conformal equivalence between Minkowski's spacetime and (a region of) the Einstein cylinder is then exploited in order to obtain a knotted, finite energy, radiating solution of the Maxwell equations in flat spacetime. We also discuss similar electromagnetic fields in expanding closed Friedmann models, and compute the matter content of such configurations.
