Resolution Except for the Normal-Crossing Locus and Galois actions

In characteristic zero, we construct a canonical, functorial resolution algorithm by weighted blow-ups that strictly preserves the normal crossings (nc) locus, effectively answering Kollar's problem. Operating in full generality, our approach handles both reduced and non-reduced nc singularities alongside the simple normal crossings (snc) exceptional divisor setup, terminating with a normal crossings Deligne-Mumford stack. The resolution is governed by two fundamental geometric properties: the openness of the nc locus and the topological rigidity of canonical maximal admissible weighted centers (the Center Theorem). We establish these via a direct Galois-theoretic analysis of splitting forms. By viewing general nc singularities as quotients of 'etale-local snc singularities by finite Galois groups permuting their branches, we reveal the intrinsic necessity of weighted blow-ups and stack structures. Building on the weighted blow-up framework of Abramovich, Temkin, and Wlodarczyk and our logarithmic refinement, this structural mechanism yields a robust resolution algorithm. Applications include a canonical compactification of nc Deligne-Mumford stacks and a functorial nc-preserving resolution of subvarieties and stacks.

Effective resolution of singularities

Consider a projective variety $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ (over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero), together with a (reduced) simple normal crossings divisor $E \subset \mathbb{P}^n$, where the degrees of both $X$ and $E$ are at most $d$. We show there is a pair $(n',d')$ which can be explicitly computed in terms of $(n,d)$, such that $(X,E)$ has a log resolution of singularities $(X',E')$, where $(X',E')$ can be embedded in $\mathbb{P}^{n'}$ and both $X'$ and $E'$ have degrees at most $d'$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n'}$.

Functorial resolution by torus actions

We present a simple and fast embedded resolution of varieties and principalization of ideals using torus actions on ambient smooth varieties with simple normal crossings (SNC) divisors. The canonical functorial resolution in characteristic zero is achieved via the newly introduced cobordant blow-ups along smooth weighted centers. These centers are defined by a geometric invariant measuring the singularities on smooth schemes with SNC divisors. The output is a smooth variety with a torus action and an SNC exceptional divisor. Its geometric quotient is birational to the resolved variety, has only abelian quotient singularities, and can be desingularized by purely combinatorial methods. The method is rooted in ideas from the joint work with Abramovich and Temkin and is closely related to McQuillan's resolution via stack-theoretic weighted blow-ups. As an application, we establish resolution results for certain classes of singularities in positive and mixed characteristic. This paper is a shortened and revised version of an earlier preprint.

Principalization on logarithmically foliated orbifolds

In characteristic zero, we construct principalization of ideals on smooth orbifolds endowed with a normal crossings divisor and a foliation. We then illustrate how the method can be used in the general study of foliations via two applications. First, we provide a resolution of singularities of Darboux totally integrable foliations in arbitrary dimensions -- including rational and meromorphic Darboux foliations. Second, we show how to transform a generically transverse section into a transverse section.

Functorial monomialization and uniqueness of centers for relative principalization

Theorem 1.2.6 of [ATW20] provides a relatively functorial logarithmic principalization of ideals on relative logarithmic orbifolds $X\to B$ in characteristic 0, relying on a delicate monomialization theorem for Kummer ideals. The paper [AdSTW25] provides a parallel avenue through weighted blowings up. In this paper we show that, if $X\to B$ is proper, monomialization of both Kummer and weighted logarithmic centers can be carried out in a manner which is functorial for base change by regular morphisms. This implies in particular logarithmic relative principalization of ideals and logarithmically smooth reduction of proper families of varieties in characteristic 0 in a manner equivariant for group actions and compatible with localization on the base.

Cox rings of morphisms and resolution of singularities

We extend the Cox-Hu-Keel construction of the Cox rings to any proper birational morphisms of normal noetherian schemes. It allows the representation of any proper birational morphism by a map of schemes with mild singularities with torus actions. In a particular case, the notion generalizes the combinatorial construction of Satriano and the recent construction of multiple weighted blow-ups on Artin-stacks by Abramovich-Quek. The latter can be viewed as an extension of stack theoretic blow-ups by Abramovich, Temkin, and Wlodarczyk, a similar construction of McQuillan and the author's recent cobordant blow-ups at weighted centers to a more general situation of arbitrary locally monomial centers. We show some applications of this operation to the resolution of singularities over a field of any characteristic.

Relative desingularization and principalization of ideals

In characteristic zero, we construct relative principalization of ideals for logarithmically regular morphisms of logarithmic schemes, and use it to construct logarithmically regular desingularization of morphisms. These constructions are relatively canonical and even functorial with respect to logarithmically regular morphisms and arbitrary base changes. Relative canonicity means, that the principalization requires a fine enough non-canonical modification of the base, and once it is chosen the process is canonical. As a consequence we deduce the semistable reduction theorem over arbitrary valuation rings. In another our work in progress, the same problems will be solved canonically in the case of proper morphisms.

Functorial resolution except for toroidal locus. Toroidal compactification

Let $X$ be any variety in characteristic zero. Let $V \subset X$ be an open subset that has toroidal singularities. We show the existence of a canonical desingularization of $X$ except for V. It is a morphism $f: Y \to X$ , which does not modify the subset $ V $ and transforms $X$ into a toroidal embedding $Y$, with singularities extending those on $V$. Moreover, the exceptional divisor has simple normal crossings on $Y$. The theorem naturally generalizes the Hironaka canonical desingularization. It does not modify the nonsingular locus $V$ and transforms $X$ into a nonsingular variety $Y$. The proof uses, in particular, the canonical desingularization of logarithmic varieties recently proved by Abramovich -Temkin-Wlodarczyk. It also relies on the established here canonical functorial desingularization of locally toric varieties with an unmodified open toroidal subset. As an application, we show the existence of a toroidal equisingular compactification of toroidal varieties. All the results here can be linked to a simple functorial combinatorial desingularization algorithm developed in this paper.

Functorial embedded resolution via weighted blowings up

We provide a procedure for resolving, in characteristic 0, singularities of a variety $X$ embedded in a smooth variety $Y$ by repeatedly blowing up the worst singularities, in the sense of stack-theoretic weighted blowings up. No history, no exceptional divisors, and no logarithmic structures are necessary to carry this out; the steps are explicit geometric operations requiring no choices; and the resulting algorithm is efficient. A similar result was discovered independently by McQuillan in a manuscript posted on this archive simultaneously.

Toroidal orbifolds, destackification, and Kummer blowings up

We show that any toroidal DM stack $X$ with finite diagonalizable inertia possesses a maximal toroidal coarsening $X_{tcs}$ such that the morphism $X\to X_{tcs}$ is logarithmically smooth. Further, we use torification results of [AT17] to construct a destackification functor, a variant of the main result of Bergh [Ber17], on the category of such toroidal stacks $X$. Namely, we associate to $X$ a sequence of blowings up of toroidal stacks $\widetilde{\mathcal{F}}_X\:Y\longrightarrow X$ such that $Y_{tc}$ coincides with the usual coarse moduli space $Y_{cs}$. In particular, this provides a toroidal resolution of the algebraic space $X_{cs}$. Both $X_{tcs}$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal{F}}_X$ are functorial with respect to strict inertia preserving morphisms $X'\to X$. Finally, we use coarsening morphisms to introduce a class of non-representable birational modifications of toroidal stacks called Kummer blowings up. These modifications, as well as our version of destackification, are used in our work on functorial toroidal resolution of singularities.

Principalization of ideals on toroidal orbifolds

Given an ideal $\mathcal I$ on a variety $X$ with toroidal singularities, we produce a modification $X' \to X$, functorial for toroidal morphisms, making the ideal monomial on a toroidal stack $X'$. We do this by adapting the methods of [Wło05], discarding steps which become redundant. We deduce functorial resolution of singularities for varieties with logarithmic structures. This is the first step in our program to apply logarithmic desingularization to a morphism $Z \to B$, aiming to prove functorial semistable reduction theorems.

Weights on cohomology, invariants of singularities, and dual complexes

In this paper, we extract natural invariants of a singularity by using the Deligne weight filtration on the cohomology of an exceptional fibre of a resolution, and also on the intersection cohomology of the link. Our primary goal is to study and give natural bounds on the weights in terms of direct images of differential forms. These bounds can be made explicit for various standard classes such as rational, isolated normal Cohen-Macaulay and toroidal singularities, and lead to strong restrictions on the topology of these singularities. A secondary goal of this paper is to make the weight filtration, and related constructions, more widely accessible. So we have tried to make the presentation somewhat self contained. This is supersedes our earlier preprint arXiv:0902.4234.

The combinatorial part of the cohomology of a singular variety

We study the first step of the weight filtration on the cohomology of a proper complex algebraic variety, which we call the combinatorial part. We obtain a natural upper bound on its size, which gives rather strong information about the topology of rational singularities.

Torification and Factorization of Birational Maps

Building on the work of the fourth author in math.AG/9904074, we prove the weak factorization conjecture for birational maps in characteristic zero: a birational map between complete nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero is a composite of blowings up and blowings down with smooth centers. Such a factorization exists which is functorial with respect to absolute isomorphisms, and compatible with a normal crossings divisor. The same holds for algebraic and analytic spaces. Another proof of the main theorem by the fourth author appeared in math.AG/9904076.
