D-instanton Effects on a D3-brane

It has been proposed by Sen that the D-instanton effects in string theory can be systematically determined through the framework of open-closed string field theory. We apply the latter formalism to analyze the D-instanton corrections to the quantum effective action of a D3-brane in type IIB superstring theory, and determine the leading single and multi-instanton contributions to the $D^4 F^4$ effective coupling which is unprotected by supersymmetry. Notably, while we find that the one-instanton contribution agrees with a conjecture of Green and Gutperle, the multi-instanton contribution disagrees with the conjecture.

On the Flux Sectors of Matrix String Theory

We analyze the gapped flux vacua of 2D (8,8) SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory. Based on the matrix string theory duality, we conjecture the spectrum of massive resonances in the gauge theory at large N and beyond the 't Hooft scaling regime.

Observables of boundary RG flows from string field theory

We present simple explicit formulae for the change of the $g$-function, boundary state, boundary spectrum and structure constants between the endpoints of short boundary RG flows at next-to-leading order. The formulae are derived using open string field theory and tested on integrable RG flows between conformal boundary states in unitary Virasoro minimal models.

On the $AdS_5\times S^5$ Solution of Superstring Field Theory

We determine the $AdS_5\times S^5$ solution of type IIB superstring field theory (SFT) to the third order in the expansion with respect to Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux, demonstrate its supersymmetry from the SFT gauge transformations, and identify the massless RR axion in the spectrum of linearized fluctuations. We present an all-order solution in the pp-wave limit and comment on potential obstructions to, and the existence of, the all-order $AdS_5\times S^5$ solution.

Scaffolding Residues in Yang-Mills-Scalar \`a la CHY

Motivated by recent work by Arkani-Hamed et al. arXiv:2401.00041, we compute the ''scaffolding'' residue of $2n$-scalar Yang-Mills-Scalar amplitudes to obtain pure $n$-gluon amplitudes \`a la Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY). In particular, we show how the Pfaffian of $\Psi$, which is a matrix rich in structure, emerges from that of the simple $A$ matrix. The same CHY computation straightforwardly produces $n$-graviton amplitudes from $2n$-scalar amplitudes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theory. We also consider partial ''scaffolding'' residues, i.e., general multi-collinear limits and their interplay with color-dressed amplitudes.

The semi-chiral ring of supersymmetric $\phi^4$ theory as a representation

In this short note, we study the infinite-dimensional symmetry algebras which appear in holomorphic twists of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories. In particular, we investigate whether their representation theory helps us understand the semi-chiral ring of $\frac{1}{4}$-BPS operators. We focus on the supersymmetric analogue of $\phi^4$ theory. Upon twist, this becomes a 4d $\beta \gamma$ system deformed by a cubic superpotential. We compute the semi-chiral ring in this example and organize it into modules for the algebra generated by the stress tensor. We find an intricate module structure and falsify the hypothesis that this could be a 4d analogue of the 2d Ising Virasoro minimal model.

Closed string tachyon condensation revisited

We consider condensation of nearly marginal matter tachyons in closed string field theory and observe that upon restricting to a subspace of states not containing the ghost dilaton, the on-shell value of the action is proportional to the shift of the central charge of the matter CFT. This correspondence lets us find a novel conformal perturbation theory formula for the next-to-leading order shift of the central charge for a generic theory, which we test on Zamolodchikov's flow between consecutive minimal models. Upon reintroduction of the dilaton couplings, it is plausible to have a vanishing value of the on-shell action.

Conformal perturbation theory from open string field theory

Conformal boundary conditions in two-dimensional conformal field theories are still mostly an uncharted territory. Even less is known about the relevant boundary deformations that connect them. A natural approach to the problem is via conformal perturbation theory, which however becomes quickly intractable. Using the formalism of open string field theory, we construct the corresponding classical solution, from which we can easily extract the boundary theory data. As a simple illustration we calculate the boundary degeneracy $g$ to next-to-leading order for a generic theory.
