Free-energy landscapes in magnetic systems from metadynamics

Knowledge of free energy barriers separating different states is critically important for assessment of long-term stability of information stored in magnetic devices. This information, however, is not directly accessible by standard simulations of microscopic models because of the ubiquitous time-scale problem, related to the fact that the transitions among different free energy minima have character of rare events. Here we show that by employing the metadynamics algorithm based on suitably chosen collective variables, namely helicity and circulation, it is possible to reliably recover the free energy landscape. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the new approach on the example of vortex nucleation process in magnetic nanodot with lowered spatial symmetry. With the help of reconstructed free energy surfaces (FES) we show the origin of the symmetry broken vortex nucleation, where one polarity of the nucleated vortex core is preferred, even though only in-plane magnetic field is present.

Dynamics of Vortex Nucleation in Nanomagnets with Broken Symmetry

We investigate fundamental processes that govern dynamics of vortex nucleation in sub-100 nm mesoscopic magnets. We focus on a structure with broken symmetry - Pacman-like nanomagnet shape - in which we study micromagnetic behavior both by means of a simple model and numerically. We show that it is possible to establish desired vortex chirality and polarity by applying only quasi-static in-plane magnetic field along specific directions. We identify the modes of vortex nucleation that are very robust against external magnetic field noise. These vortex nucleation modes are common among wide range of sub-100 nm magnets with broken rotational symmetry.

Strong Correlations in Electron Doped Phthalocyanine Conductors Near Half Filling

We propose that electron doped nontransition metal-phthalocyanines (MPc) like ZnPc and MgPc, similar to those very recently reported, should constitute novel strongly correlated metals. Due to orbital degeneracy, Jahn-Teller coupling and Hund's rule exchange, and with a large on-site Coulomb repulsion, these molecular conductors should display, particularly near half filling at two electrons/molecule, very unconventional properties, including Mott insulators, strongly correlated superconductivity, and other intriguing phases.
