The centered dual and the maximal injectivity radius of hyperbolic surfaces

We give sharp upper bounds on the maximal injectivity radius of finite-area hyperbolic surfaces and use them, for each g at least 2, to identify a constant r_{g-1,2} with the property that the set of closed genus-g hyperbolic surfaces with maximal injectivity radius at least r is compact if and only if r > r_{g-1,2}. The main tool is a version of the "centered dual complex" that we introduced earlier, a coarsening of the Delaunay complex of a locally finite set. In particular, we bound the area of a compact centered dual two-cell below given lower bounds on its side lengths.

Algebraic invariants, mutation, and commensurability of link complements

We construct a family of hyperbolic link complements by gluing tangles along totally geodesic four-punctured spheres, then investigate the commensurability relation among its members. Those with different volume are incommensurable, distinguished by their scissors congruence classes. Mutation produces arbitrarily large finite subfamilies of nonisometric manifolds with the same volume and scissors congruence class. Depending on the choice of mutation, these manifolds may be commensurable or incommensurable, distinguished in the latter case by cusp parameters. All have trace field Q(i,\sqrt{2}), but some have integral traces while others do not.

Tessellations of hyperbolic surfaces

A finite subset S of a closed hyperbolic surface F canonically determines a "centered dual decomposition" of F: a cell structure with vertex set S, geodesic edges, and 2-cells that are unions of the corresponding Delaunay polygons. Unlike a Delaunay polygon, a centered dual 2-cell Q is not determined by its collection of edge lengths; but together with its combinatorics, these determine an "admissible space" parametrizing geometric possibilities for the Delaunay cells comprising Q. We illustrate its application by using the centered dual decomposition to extract combinatorial information about the Delaunay tessellation among certain genus-2 surfaces, and with this relate injectivity radius to covering radius here.

Some virtually special hyperbolic 3-manifold groups

Let M be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume that admits a decomposition into right-angled ideal polyhedra. We show that M has a deformation retraction that is a virtually special square complex, in the sense of Haglund and Wise and deduce that such manifolds are virtually fibered. We generalise a theorem of Haglund and Wise to the relatively hyperbolic setting and deduce that the fundamental group of M is LERF and that the geometrically finite subgroups of the fundamental group are virtual retracts. Examples of 3-manifolds admitting such a decomposition include augmented link complements. We classify the low-complexity augmented links and describe an infinite family with complements not commensurable to any 3-dimensional reflection orbifold.

Cross curvature flow on a negatively curved solid torus

The classic 2pi-Theorem of Gromov and Thurston constructs a negatively curved metric on certain 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn filling. By Geometrization, any such manifold admits a hyperbolic metric. We outline a program using cross curvature flow to construct a smooth one-parameter family of metrics between the "2pi-metric" and the hyperbolic metric. We make partial progress in the program, proving long-time existence, preservation of negative sectional curvature, curvature bounds, and integral convergence to hyperbolic for the metrics under consideration.

Totally geodesic surfaces and homology

We construct examples of hyperbolic rational homology spheres and hyperbolic knot complements in rational homology spheres containing closed embedded totally geodesic surfaces.

On the doubled tetrus

The tetrus is a sort of big brother to the tripus, W.P. Thurston's example of a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We describe a sixfold cover of the double of the tetrus, itself a double, which fibers over the circle with fiber a closed surface of genus 19. We also record arithmeticity of the doubles and certain twisted doubles of the tripus and tetrus, and point out some consequences regarding families of covers.

Volume and topology of bounded and closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Let N be a compact, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with connected, totally geodesic boundary of genus 2. If N has Heegaard genus at least 5, then its volume is greater than 6.89. The proof of this result uses the following dichotomy: either N has a long return path (defined by Kojima-Miyamoto), or N has an embedded, codimension-0 submanifold X with incompressible boundary $T \sqcup \partial N$, where T is the frontier of X in N, which is not a book of I-bundles. As an application of this result, we show that if M is a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold such that H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 5, and if the image in H^2(M;Z_2) of the cup product map has image of dimension at most 1, then M has volume greater than 3.44.

Incompressible surfaces, hyperbolic volume, Heegaard genus and homology

We show that if M is a complete, finite-volume, hyperbolic 3-manifold having exactly one cusp, and if H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 6, then M has volume greater than 5.06. We also show that if M is a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold such that H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 4, and if the image of the cup product map in H^2(M;Z_2) has dimension at most 1, then M has volume greater than 3.08. The proofs of these geometric results involve new topological results relating the Heegaard genus of a closed Haken manifold M to the Euler characteristic of the kishkes (i.e guts) of the complement of an incompressible surface in M.

Trace fields and commensurability of link complements

This paper investigates the strength of the trace field as a commensurability invariant of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We construct an infinite family of two-component hyperbolic link complements which are pairwise incommensurable and have the same trace field, and infinitely many 1-cusped finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same property. We also show that the two-component link complements above have integral traces, but each has a mutant with a nonintegral trace.

Surface groups are frequently faithful

We show the set of faithful representations of a closed orientable hyperbolic surface group is dense in both irreducible components of the PSL(2,K) representation variety, where K is the field of real or complex numbers, answering a question of W. Goldman. We also prove the existence of faithful representations into PU(2,1) with certain nonintegral Toledo invariants.
