Simplicial volume and fillings of hyperbolic manifolds

Let M be a hyperbolic n-manifold whose cusps have torus cross-sections. In arXiv:0901.0056, the authors constructed a variety of nonpositively and negatively curved spaces as "2π-fillings" of M by replacing the cusps of M with compact "partial cones" of their boundaries. These 2π-fillings are closed pseudomanifolds, and so have a fundamental class. We show that the simplicial volume of any such 2π-filling is positive, and bounded above by Vol(M)/v_n, where v_n is the volume of a regular ideal hyperbolic n-simplex. This result generalizes the fact that hyperbolic Dehn filling of a 3-manifold does not increase hyperbolic volume. In particular, we obtain information about the simplicial volumes of some 4--dimensional homology spheres described by Ratcliffe and Tschantz, answering a question of Belegradek and establishing the existence of 4--dimensional homology spheres with positive simplicial volume.

Virtually geometric words and Whitehead's algorithm

Motivated by a question of Gordon and Wilton, we consider the question of which collections of words are "virtually geometric". In particular, we prove that some words (e.g. bbaaccabc) are not virtually geometric.

Separation of Relatively Quasiconvex Subgroups

Suppose that all hyperbolic groups are residually finite. The following statements follow: In relatively hyperbolic groups with peripheral structures consisting of finitely generated nilpotent subgroups, quasiconvex subgroups are separable; Geometrically finite subgroups of non-uniform lattices in rank one symmetric spaces are separable; Kleinian groups are subgroup separable. We also show that LERF for finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds would follow from LERF for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The method is to reduce, via combination and filling theorems, the separability of a quasiconvex subgroup of a relatively hyperbolic group G to the separability of a quasiconvex subgroup of a hyperbolic quotient G/N. A result of Agol, Groves, and Manning is then applied.

Dehn filling in relatively hyperbolic groups

We introduce a number of new tools for the study of relatively hyperbolic groups. First, given a relatively hyperbolic group G, we construct a nice combinatorial Gromov hyperbolic model space acted on properly by G, which reflects the relative hyperbolicity of G in many natural ways. Second, we construct two useful bicombings on this space. The first of these, "preferred paths", is combinatorial in nature and allows us to define the second, a relatively hyperbolic version of a construction of Mineyev. As an application, we prove a group-theoretic analog of the Gromov-Thurston 2πTheorem in the context of relatively hyperbolic groups.

CAT(0) and CAT(-1) fillings of hyperbolic manifolds

We give new examples of hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups of cohomological dimension $d$ for all $d\geq 4$. These examples result from applying CAT$(0)$/CAT$(-1)$ filling constructions (based on singular doubly warped products) to finite volume hyperbolic manifolds with toral cusps. The groups obtained have a number of interesting properties, which are established by analyzing their boundaries at infinity by a kind of Morse-theoretic technique, related to but distinct from ordinary and combinatorial Morse theory.

Fillings, finite generation and direct limits of relatively hyperbolic groups

We examine the relationship between finitely and infinitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups, in two different contexts. First, we elaborate on a remark from math.GR/0601311, which states that the version of Dehn filling in relatively hyperbolic groups proved in math.GR/0510195, allowing infinitely generated parabolic subgroups, follows from the version with finitely generated parabolics. Second, we observe that direct limits of relatively hyperbolic groups are in fact direct limits of finitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups. We use this (and known results) to derive some consequences about the Strong Novikov Conjecture for groups as constructed in math.GR/0411039.

Quasi-actions on trees and Property (QFA)

We prove some general results about quasi-actions on trees and define Property (QFA), which is analogous to Serre's Property (FA), but in the coarse setting. This property is shown to hold for a class of groups, including $SL(n,\Z)$ for $n\geq 3$. We also give a way of thinking about Property (QFA) by breaking it down into statements about particular classes of trees.

Geometry of pseudocharacters

If G is a group, a pseudocharacter f: G-->R is a function which is "almost" a homomorphism. If G admits a nontrivial pseudocharacter f, we define the space of ends of G relative to f and show that if the space of ends is complicated enough, then G contains a nonabelian free group. We also construct a quasi-action by G on a tree whose space of ends contains the space of ends of G relative to f. This construction gives rise to examples of "exotic" quasi-actions on trees.
