Isospin-Violating Dark Matter Benchmarks for Snowmass 2013

Isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) generalizes the standard spin-independent scattering parameter space by introducing one additional parameter, the neutron-to-proton coupling ratio f_n/f_p. In IVDM the implications of direct detection experiments can be altered significantly. We review the motivations for considering IVDM and present benchmark models that illustrate some of the qualitatively different possibilities. IVDM strongly motivates the use of a variety of target nuclei in direct detection experiments.

Gamma Rays from Bino-like Dark Matter in the MSSM

We consider regions of the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with bino-like neutralino dark matter in which a large fraction of the total dark matter annihilation cross section in the present era arises from annihilation to final states with monoenergetic photons. The region of interest is characterized by light sleptons and heavy squarks. We find that it is possible for the branching fraction to final states with monoenergetic photons to be comparable to that for continuum photons, but in those cases the total cross section will be so small that it is unlikely to be observable. For models where dark matter annihilation may be observable in the present era, the branching fraction to final states with monoenergetic photons is O(1-10%).

Xenophobic Dark Matter

We consider models of xenophobic dark matter, in which isospin-violating dark matter-nucleon interactions significantly degrade the response of xenon direct detection experiments. For models of near-maximal xenophobia, with neutron-to-proton coupling ratio $f_n / f_p \approx -0.64$, and dark matter mass near 8 GeV, the regions of interest for CoGeNT and CDMS-Si and the region of interest identified by Collar and Fields in CDMS-Ge data can be brought into agreement. This model may be tested in future direct, indirect, and collider searches. Interestingly, because the natural isotope abundance of xenon implies that xenophobia has its limits, we find that this xenophobic model may be probed in the near future by xenon experiments. Near-future data from the LHC and Fermi-LAT may also provide interesting alternative probes of xenophobic dark matter.

Constraints on Bosonic Dark Matter From Observations of Old Neutron Stars

Baryon interactions with bosonic dark matter are constrained by the potential for dark matter-rich neutron stars to collapse into black holes. We consider the effect of dark matter self-interactions and dark matter annihilation on these bounds, and treat the evolution of the black hole after formation. We show that, for non-annihilating dark matter, these bounds extend up to $m_X \sim 10^{5-7}$ GeV, depending on the strength of self-interactions. However, these bounds are completely unconstraining for annihilating bosonic dark matter with an annihilation cross-section of $<σ_a v> \gtrsim 10^{-38} {\rm cm^3 /s}$. Dark matter decay does not significantly affect these bounds. We thus show that bosonic dark matter accessible to near-future direct detection experiments must participate in an annihilation or self-interaction process to avoid black hole collapse constraints from very old neutron stars.

Large Jet Multiplicities and Natural Supersymmetry at the LHC

We consider a search strategy for new physics at the Large Hadron Collider which focuses on the signature of many jets and missing transverse energy, but no charged leptons. We show that this signature can be useful in probing a wide class of models, including natural supersymmetry, in which dark matter is produced in conjunction top quarks. As an example, we apply this strategy to a simplified supersymmetric model with a light gluino, light stop and light neutralino. The efficacy of this strategy is comparable to (and in some cases better than) that of other strategies which require charged leptons and/or b-tagged jets.

Novel Dark Matter Models and Detection Strategies

We consider the impact of relaxing some typical assumptions about dark matter interactions, including isospin-invariance, elastic scattering and contact interactions. We show that detection strategies with neutrino detectors, gamma-ray searches, new direct detection experiments and collider searches can all provide complementary information. We argue that data from many such strategies may be necessary to gain a more complete understanding of dark matter interactions.

Bremsstrahlung signatures of dark matter annihilation in the Sun

The nonrelativistic annihilation of Majorana dark matter in the Sun to a pair of light fermions is chirality-suppressed. Annihilation to 3-body final states $\ell^+f^-V$, where $V=W,Z,γ$, and $\ell$ and $f$ are light fermions (that may be the same), becomes dominant since bremsstrahlung relaxes the chirality suppression. We evaluate the neutrino spectra at the source, including spin and helicity dependent effects, and assess the detectability of each significant bremsstrahlung channel at IceCube/DeepCore. We also show how to combine the sensitivities to the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section in individual channels, since typically several channels contribute in models.

Large Jet Multiplicities and New Physics at the LHC

A broad class of scenarios for new physics involving additional strongly-interacting fields generically predicts signatures at hadron colliders which consist solely of large numbers of jets and substantial missing transverse energy. In this work, we investigate the prospects for discovery in such scenarios using a search strategy in which jet multiplicity and missing transverse energy are employed as the primary criteria for distinguishing signal from background. We examine the discovery reach this strategy affords in an example theory (a simplified supersymmetric model whose low-energy spectrum consists of a gluino, a light stop, and a light neutralino) and demonstrate that it frequently exceeds the reach obtained via other, alternative strategies.

Direct Detection of Dynamical Dark Matter

Dynamical dark matter (DDM) is an alternative framework for dark-matter physics in which the dark-matter candidate is an ensemble of constituent fields with differing masses, lifetimes, and cosmological abundances. In this framework, it is the balancing of these quantities against each other across the ensemble as a whole which ensures phenomenological viability. In this paper, we examine the prospects for the direct detection of a DDM ensemble. In particular, we study the constraints imposed by current limits from direct-detection experiments on the parameter space of DDM models, and we assess the prospects for detecting such an ensemble and distinguishing it from traditional dark-matter candidates on the basis of data from the next generation of direct-detection experiments. For concreteness, we focus primarily on the case in which elastic scattering via spin-independent interactions dominates the interaction rate between atomic nuclei and the constituent particles of the ensemble. We also briefly discuss the effects of modifying these assumptions.

Spin Determination for Fermiophobic Bosons

We discuss the prospects for production and detection of fermiophobic bosons (exotic bosons decaying only to standard model gauge bosons) at the LHC, and describe simple methods for determining spin. We consider two complementary approaches to spin determination: the search for decays in the diphoton channel, and the comparison of events with no extra spectator jets to those with one extra jet. We show that these approaches can together allow the fermiophobic bosons spin to be determined over a wide range of parameter space. We study both even and odd parity states.

New Constraints on Isospin-Violating Dark Matter

We derive bounds on the dark matter annihilation cross-section for low-mass (5-20 GeV) dark matter annihilating primarily to up or down quarks, using the Fermi-LAT bound on gamma-rays from Milky Way satellites. For models in which dark matter-Standard Model interactions are mediated by particular contact operators, we show that these bounds can be directly translated into bounds on the dark matter-proton scattering cross-section. For isospin-violating dark matter, these constraints are tight enough to begin to constrain the parameter-space consistent with experimental signals of low-mass dark matter. We discuss possible models that can evade these bounds.

Collider Searches for Fermiophobic Gauge Bosons

We explore the phenomenology of an extra U(1) gauge boson which primarily couples to standard model gauge bosons. We classify all possible parity-odd couplings up to dimension 6 operators. We then study the prospects for the detection of such a boson at the LHC and show that the electroweak decay channels lead to very clean signals, allowing us to probe couplings well into the TeV scale.

Probing Isospin-Violating Dark Matter

We discuss experimental probes of isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM), including direct and indirect detection strategies. We point out the important role which IVDM plays in understanding recent data regarding low-mass dark matter, and describe strategies for finding evidence of IVDM at current and upcoming experiments.

Higher Representations and Multi-Jet Resonances at the LHC

The CMS collaboration has recently conducted a search for trijet resonances in multi-jet events at the LHC. Motivated in part by this analysis, we examine the phenomenology of exotic particles transforming under higher representations of SU(3) color, focusing on those representations which intrinsically prohibit decays to fewer than three jets. We determine the LHC discovery reach for a particle transforming in a representation of this sort and discuss several additional theoretical and phenomenological constraints which apply to such a particle. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such a particle can provide a consistent explanation for a trijet excess (an invariant-mass peak of roughly 375 GeV) observed in the recent CMS study.

Local Scale-Dependent Non-Gaussian Curvature Perturbations at Cubic Order

We calculate non-Gaussianities in the bispectrum and trispectrum arising from the cubic term in the local expansion of the scalar curvature perturbation. We compute to three-loop order and for general momenta. A procedure for evaluating the leading behavior of the resulting loop-integrals is developed and discussed. Finally, we survey unique non-linear signals which could arise from the cubic term in the squeezed limit. In particular, it is shown that loop corrections can cause $f_{NL}^{sq.}$ to change sign as the momentum scale is varied. There also exists a momentum limit where $τ_{NL} <0$ can be realized.

Isospin-Violating Dark Matter

Searches for dark matter scattering off nuclei are typically compared assuming that the dark matter's spin-independent couplings are identical for protons and neutrons. This assumption is neither innocuous nor well motivated. We consider isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) with one extra parameter, the ratio of neutron to proton couplings, and include the isotope distribution for each detector. For a single choice of the coupling ratio, the DAMA and CoGeNT signals are consistent with each other and with current XENON constraints, and they unambiguously predict near future signals at XENON and CRESST. We provide a quark-level realization of IVDM as WIMPless dark matter that is consistent with all collider and low-energy bounds.

B's with Direct Decays: Tevatron and LHC Discovery Prospects in the b\bar{b}+MET Channel

We explore the discovery prospects for B'\bar{B}' pair production followed by direct decays B'->bX, where B' is a new quark and X is a long-lived neutral particle. We develop optimized cuts in the (m_B', m_X) plane and show that the 7 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 1 (10) fb^-1 may exclude masses up to m_B' ~ 620 (800) GeV, completely covering the mass range allowed for new quarks that get mass from electroweak symmetry breaking. This analysis is applicable to other models with b\bar{b}+MET signals, including supersymmetric models with bottom squarks decaying directly to neutralinos, and models with exotic quarks decaying directly to GeV-scale dark matter. To accommodate these and other interpretations, we also present model-independent results for the b\bar{b}+MET cross section required for exclusion and discovery.

Isospin-Violating Dark Matter in the Sun

We consider the prospects for studying spin-independent isospin-violating dark matter-nucleon interactions with neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the Sun, with a focus on IceCube/DeepCore (IC/DC). If dark matter-nucleon interactions are isospin violating, IC/DC's reach in the spin-independent cross section may be competitive with current direct detection experiments for a wide range of dark matter masses. We also compare IC/DC's sensitivity to that of next generation argon, germanium, neon and xenon based detectors.
