Boosted Higgs-pair production associated with large $E_T^{miss}$: a signal of $Z^\prime$

Non-resonant production of Higgs-pair via heavy intermediate states may be a distinctive signature for extended discrete symmetries when accompaied by large missing transvers energy. We discuss $T$-parity as an example of such symmetry within the Littlest Higgs Model, where a new heavy gauge boson $Z'$, the $T$-odd partner of SM $Z$-boson, predominately decays into to a Higgs boson and a dark matter candidate $\chi$. In essence, $T$-parity stablises simultaneously both the Higgs mass and the dark matter. Production via $pp\rightarrow Z' Z'\rightarrow 2h 2\chi$ may therefore yield important clues about symmetries connecting the Higgs and dark sectors. This paper makes a case for the search for this channel at the LHC by studying its discovery potential. It is demonstrated that in situations where a large $Z'-\chi$ mass gap results in a boosted topology, the jet-substructure technique can be leveraged to reach the required significance for discovery in the $2h\rightarrow 2\gamma2b$ decay mode.

Gravitational waves from a supercooled electroweak phase transition and their detection with pulsar timing arrays

We investigate the properties of a stochastic gravitational wave background produced by a first-order electroweak phase transition in the regime of extreme supercooling. We study a scenario whereby the percolation temperature that signifies the completion of the transition, $T_p$, can be as low as a few MeV (nucleosynthesis temperature), while most of the true vacuum bubbles are formed much earlier at the nucleation temperature, $T_n\sim 50$ GeV. This implies that the gravitational wave spectrum is mainly produced by the collisions of large bubbles and characterised by a large amplitude and a peak frequency as low as $f \sim 10^{-9}-10^{-7}$ Hz. We show that such a scenario can occur in (but not limited to) a model based on a non-linear realisation of the electroweak gauge group, such that the Higgs vacuum configuration is altered by a cubic coupling. In order to carefully quantify the evolution of the phase transition of this model over such a wide temperature range, we go beyond the usual fast transition approximation, taking into account the expansion of the Universe as well as the behaviour of the nucleation probability at low temperatures. Our computation shows that there exists a range of parameters for which the gravitational wave spectrum lies at the edge between the exclusion limits of current pulsar timing array experiments and the detection band of the future Square Kilometre Array observatory.

Central-edge asymmetry as a probe of Higgs-top coupling in $t\bar{t}h$ production at LHC

The Higgs-top coupling plays a central role in the hierarchy problem and the vacuum stability of the Standard Model (SM). We propose a central-edge asymmetry ($A_{CE}$) to probe the CP violating Higgs-top coupling in dileptonic channel of $t\bar{t}h(\to b\bar{b})$ production at the LHC. We demonstrate that the CP-violating Higgs-top coupling can affect the central-edge asymmetry through distorting $\Delta y_{\ell^+\ell^-}$ distribution because of the contribution of new top charge asymmetric term. Since $\Delta y_{\ell^+\ell^-}$ distribution is frame-independent and has a good discrimination even in boosted regime, we use the jet substructure technique to enhance the observability of the dileptonic channel of $t\bar{t}h$ production. We find that (1) the significance of dileptonic channel of $t\bar{t}h$ production can reach $5\sigma$ for CP phase $\xi=0,\pi/4,\pi/2$ when the luminosity ${\cal L}=795,993,1276$ fb$^{-1}$ at 14 TeV LHC. (2) the central-edge asymmetry $A_{CE}$ show a good discrimination power of CP phase of $t\bar{t}h$ interaction, which are -40.26\%, -26.60\%, -9.47\% for $\xi=0$, $\pi/4$, $ \pi/2$ respectively and are hardly affected by the event selections. Besides, by performing the binned-$\chi^2$ analysis of $\Delta y_{\ell^+\ell^-}$ distribution, we find that the scalar and pseudo-scalar interactions can be distinguished at 95\% C.L. level at 14 TeV HL-LHC.

Effective field theory, electric dipole moments and electroweak baryogenesis

Negative searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) heavily constrain models of baryogenesis utilising various higher dimensional charge and parity violating (CPV) operators. Using effective field theory, we create a model independent connection between these EDM constraints and the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) produced during a strongly first order electroweak phase transition. The thermal aspects of the high scale physics driving the phase transition are paramaterised by the usual kink solution for the bubble wall profile. We find that operators involving derivatives of the Higgs field yield CPV contributions to the BAU containing derivatives of the Higgs vev, while non-derivative operators lack such contributions. Consequently, derivative operators cannot be eliminated in terms of non-derivative operators (via the equations of motion) if one is agnostic to the new physics that leads to the phase transition. Thus, we re-classify the independent dimension six operators, restricting ourselves to third generation quarks, gauge bosons and the Higgs. Finally, we calculate the BAU (as a function of the bubble wall width and the cutoff) for a derivative and a non-derivative operator, and relate it to the EDM constraints.

Implications of CP-violating Top-Higgs Couplings at LHC and Higgs Factories

We utilise the LHC Run-1 and -2 Higgs data to constrain the CP-violating top-Higgs couplings. In order to satisfy the current full Higgs data sets at $2\sigma$ level, the CP-odd component $C^p_t$ and the CP-even component $C^s_t$ have to be within the ranges $|C^p_t|< 0.37$ and $0.85 <C^s_t< 1.20$, respectively, which is stronger than the LHC Run-1 bound $|C^p_t|< 0.54$ and $0.68 <C^s_t< 1.20$. With the new bound, we explore the impact on the CP-violating top-Higgs couplings in the Higgs production processes $pp \to t\bar{t}h, thj, hh$ at 13 TeV LHC, and $e^+e^- \to hZ, h\gamma$ at future 240 GeV Higgs factories. We find that the cross sections of $pp \to t\bar{t}h$, $pp \to thj$, $pp \to hh$, $e^+e^- \to hZ$ and $e^+e^- \to h\gamma$ can be enhanced up to 1.41, 1.18, 2.20, 1.001 and 1.09 times as large as the SM predictions, respectively. The future precision measurement of the process $e^+e^- \to h\gamma$ with an accuracy of 5\% will be able to constrain $|C^p_t|<0.19$ at most at a 240 GeV $e^+e^-$ Higgs factory.

Gravitational Waves from the Phase Transition of a Non-linearly Realised Electroweak Gauge Symmetry

Within the Standard Model with non-linearly realised electroweak symmetry, the LHC Higgs boson may reside in a singlet representation of the gauge group. Several new interactions are then allowed, including anomalous Higgs self-couplings, which may drive the electroweak phase transition to be strongly first-order. In this paper we investigate the cosmological electroweak phase transition in a simplified model with an anomalous Higgs cubic self- coupling. We look at the feasibility of detecting gravitational waves produced during such a transition in the early universe by future space-based experiments. We find that for the range of relatively large cubic couplings, $111~{\rm GeV}~ \lesssim |\kappa| \lesssim 118~{\rm GeV}$, $\sim $mHz frequency gravitational waves can be observed by eLISA, while BBO will potentially be able to detect waves in a wider frequency range, $0.1-10~$mHz.

Warped Graviton Couplings to Bulk Vectors with Brane Localised Kinetic Terms

We realize non-universal couplings between Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons and bulk Standard Model (SM) vectors in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model by including both UV and IR brane-localised gauge kinetic terms. We find that such kinetic terms can reduce the couplings of KK gravitons to SM gauge bosons and also ensure the KK vector masses are consistent with electroweak precision constraints.

Electroweak Baryogenesis with Anomalous Higgs Couplings

We investigate feasibility of efficient baryogenesis at the electroweak scale within the effective field theory framework based on a non-linear realisation of the electroweak gauge symmetry. In this framework the LHC Higgs boson is described by a singlet scalar field, which, therefore, admits new interactions. Assuming that Higgs couplings with the eletroweak gauge bosons are as in the Standard Model, we demonstrate that the Higgs cubic coupling and the CP-violating Higgs-top quark anomalous couplings alone may drive the a strongly first-order phase transition. The distinguished feature of this transition is that the anomalous Higgs vacuum expectation value is generally non-zero in both phases. We identify a range of anomalous couplings, consistent with current experimental data, where sphaleron rates are sufficiently fast in the 'symmetric' phase and are suppressed in the 'broken' phase and demonstrate that the desired baryon asymmetry can indeed be generated in this framework. This range of the Higgs anomalous couplings can be further constrained from the LHC Run 2 data and be probed at high luminosity LHC and beyond.

Enhanced $thj$ signal at the LHC with $h\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ decay and $\mathcal{CP}$-violating top-Higgs coupling

We study the observability of non-standard top Yukawa couplings in the $pp\rightarrow t(\rightarrow \ell \nu_\ell b ) h(\rightarrow \gamma\gamma)j$ channel at 14 TeV high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). The small diphoton branching ratio is enhanced when the $\mathcal{CP}$-violating phase, $\xi$, of the top-Higgs interaction is non-zero. When the modulus of the top-Higgs interaction assumes the SM value, $y_t=y_t^{SM}$, we find that the signal significance reaches $2.7\sigma$ $( 7.7\sigma)$ when $\xi= 0.25\pi$ $(0.5\pi) $. Furthermore, the different couplings modify the polarisation of the top quark, and can subsequently be distinguished via asymmetries in spin correlations with the final state leptons. The diphoton decay mode is found to be significantly more promising than the previously considered $pp\rightarrow t(\rightarrow \ell \nu_\ell b ) h(\rightarrow b\overline{b})j$ channel.

Anomalous Top-Higgs Couplings and Top Polarisation in Single Top and Higgs Associated Production at the LHC

In this paper, we put constraints on anomalous $\mathcal{CP}$-violating top-Higgs couplings using the currently available Higgs data and explore the prospect of measuring these couplings at 240 GeV TLEP. We find that the $\mathcal{CP}$-violating phase $\xi$ is currently limited in the range $|\xi|< 0.6\pi$ at 95\% C.L. and may be further constrained to $|\xi| <0.07\pi$ at TLEP. Under this consideration, we further investigate the observability of the scalar ($\xi =0$), pseudoscalar ($\xi =0.5\pi$) and mixed ($\xi =0.25\pi$) top-Higgs interactions through the channel $pp \to t(\to \ell^+\nu_\ell b)h(\to b\overline{b})j$. We find that it is most promising to observe pure pseudoscalar interactions with $y_t=y_t^{SM}$, although this will be challenging due to a low signal to background ratio. We also find that the anomalous top-Higgs couplings can lead to sizeable differences in lepton forward-backward asymmetries and can be distinguished by measuring the lepton angular distributions from polarised top quarks at 14 TeV LHC.

Excluding a Generic Spin-2 Higgs Impostor

We argue that the current experimental data in conjunction with perturbative unitarity considerations exclude the possibility that the LHC 125-126 GeV resonance is a generic massive spin-2 particle of either parity. We analyse tree-level Z-spin-2 elastic scattering and demonstrate that perturbative unitarity breaks down at energies $\Lambda\sim 600$ GeV. Furthermore, we find that W,Z-spin-2 interactions contribute to the electroweak oblique parameters in a way that is in gross disagreement with observations.
