Exact Solutions to Matrix Models and String Theories: The Local Construction

Exact nonperturbative solutions to hermitian one-matrix models, their topological string duals, as well as their double-scaling limits to multicritical and minimal string theories, may be obtained via the use of resurgent transseries. These solutions are generically resonant, entailing both eigenvalues and anti-eigenvalues, or, equivalently, both D-branes and negative-tension D-branes -- but are otherwise intricate to write down, having been previously addressed on a case-by-case approach. This work shows how there is a general and rather compact way to write down all these exact and fully nonperturbative transseries solutions in closed-form, immediately starting from the spectral geometry of the matrix model or string theory at hand, in the form of a discrete Fourier or Zak transform for their partition functions. This structure is inherently associated to the existence of anti-eigenvalues or negative-tension D-branes. The validity of these solutions is testable across all values of the parameters -- from weak to strong 't Hooft coupling, from small to large N; equivalently, from semi-classical to deeply quantum regimes -- and many such nonperturbative tests are performed against diverse examples ranging from matrix models to non-critical strings, fully validating our analytical and exact expressions. In particular, anti-eigenvalues or negative-tension D-branes are absolutely required to find sharp numerical matches. In order to study these solutions globally across their phase diagrams, however, complete non-linear Stokes data is still needed -- which will be addressed in a complementary follow-up paper.

Emergence of oscillons in kink-impurity interactions

The (1+1)-dimensional classical $\varphi^4$ theory contains stable, topological excitations in the form of solitary waves or kinks, as well as stable but non-topological solutions, such as the oscillon. Both are used in effective descriptions of excitations throughout myriad fields of physics. The oscillon is well-known to be a coherent, particle-like solution when introduced as an Ansatz in the $\varphi^4$ theory. Here, we show that oscillons also arise naturally in the dynamics of the theory, in particular as the result of kink-antikink collisions in the presence of an impurity. We show that in addition to the scattering of kinks and the formation of a breather, both bound oscillon pairs and propagating oscillons may emerge from the collision. We discuss their resonances and critical velocity as a function of impurity strength and highlight the role played by the impurity in the scattering process.

Kinks and realistic impurity models in $\varphi^4$-theory

The $\varphi^4$-theory is ubiquitous as a low-energy effective description of processes in all fields of physics ranging from cosmology and particle physics to biophysics and condensed matter theory. The topological defects, or kinks, in this theory describe stable, particle-like excitations. In practice, these excitations will necessarily encounter impurities or imperfections in the background potential as they propagate. Here, we describe the interaction between kinks and various types of realistic impurity models. We find that realistic impurities behave qualitatively like the well-studied, idealized delta function impurities, but that significant quantitative differences appear in both the characteristics of localized impurity modes, and in the collision dynamics. We also identify a particular regime of kink-impurity interactions, in which kinks loose all of their kinetic energy upon colliding with an impurity.
