Constraints on the $O(n)$ model from a negative number of flavors

Treating the number of flavors $n$ as a variable in the $O(n)$ model leads to non-perturbative constraints on the spectrum of operators. Using the duality between $O(n)$ and $Sp(-n)$, we extend these relations to negative even values of $n$ and we make them explicit by decomposing operators with general flavor structure into irreducible representations. In perturbation theory, we exploit this structure to reveal novel degeneracies in the scaling dimensions of different operators, which persist for arbitrary $n$. This allows us to derive the two-loop anomalous dimension of any $ϕ^k$-type operator from existing results without additional loop calculations. The same mechanism dictates patterns in renormalization group mixing matrices, yielding new non-renormalization results in a specific operator basis. We comment on extending this framework to relations between operator product expansion coefficients and to analogous constraints arising from evanescence under continuation in the number of spacetime dimensions.

Positivity in the Renormalization of Effective Field Theory

We show that the direction of renormalization in effective field theory is constrained by fundamental principles in the infrared$\unicode{x2014}$unitarity, analyticity, and Lorentz invariance. Our theorem, in the spirit of the $a$-theorem in conformal field theory, determines the sign of the one-loop running of couplings in the forward limit, when one inserts two operators whose mass dimensions are identical and even. The theorem holds for a broad class of effective field theories with arbitrary ultraviolet completions. The constraint directly applies to linear positivity bounds derived using tree-level amplitudes in the infrared, providing a criterion for whether renormalization effects can preserve the positivity bounds, or lead to their apparent violation. We discuss the phenomenological implications of our theorem in chiral perturbation theory and the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, where our theorem is particularly constraining for the running at dimension eight. We provide several examples and show various extensions and applications even at dimension six.

EFT meets CFT: Multiloop renormalization of higher-dimensional operators in general $ϕ^4$ theories

The renormalization of composite operators is a fundamental aspect of quantum field theory, relevant for the description of phase transitions and high energy phenomenology. We calculate the anomalous dimensions of a large set of operators in any scalar $ϕ^4$ theory in $d=4-\varepsilon$ dimensions, up to five loops in most cases. The results have applications in both effective field theory (EFT) and conformal field theory (CFT). As an EFT application, we extract the five-loop renormalization group (RG) equations of the Higgs sector of the Standard Model EFT at dimension six, and up to two loops at dimension eight, aligning our operator basis with custodial symmetry violation. Additionally, for CFT, by resumming the $\varepsilon$-expanded results at the fixed-point, we determine the entire low-lying spectrum (i.e. up to dimension six and Lorentz rank two) of the Ising, $O(n)$ and hypercubic scalar CFTs. Our work enables future conformal bootstrap studies for numerous theories of interest. We include introductions to EFT and CFT, and we illustrate our method and the structure in RG mixing matrices in several illuminating examples, which may also be of general interest. All results in the general theory are publicly available and we describe a systematic path towards applying them to more complicated CFTs.

Two-loop renormalization of general bosonic effective field theories

The renormalization of higher-dimensional operators in quantum field theory is essential for phenomenological analyses in particle physics, and plays a significant role in the study of critical phenomena. We present a framework for renormalizing general bosonic effective field theories beyond one loop, with arbitrary gauge symmetry and scalar field content. In particular, we calculate the renormalization group equations in such theories up to two loops and dimension six. When specialized to the bosonic sector of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) using simple replacement rules, our general expressions reproduce recent results from the literature. Due to the broad applicability of effective field theory, our general results can readily be applied to obtain the anomalous dimensions in extensions of the bosonic SMEFT and in a plethora of other theories. We also envision our results to provide useful data on the scaling dimensions of composite operators in conformal field theories without fermions.

Multi-loop spectra in general scalar EFTs and CFTs

We consider the most general effective field theory (EFT) Lagrangian with scalar fields and derivatives, and renormalise it to substantially higher loop order than existing results in the literature. EFT Lagrangians have phenomenological applications, for example by encoding corrections to the Standard Model from unknown new physics. At the same time, scalar EFTs capture the spectrum of Wilson--Fisher conformal field theories (CFTs) in $4-\varepsilon$ dimensions. Our results are enabled by a more efficient version of the $R^*$ method for renormalisation, in which the IR divergences are subtracted via a small-momentum asymptotic expansion. In particular, we renormalise the most general set of composite operators up to engineering dimension six and Lorentz rank two. We exhibit direct applications of our results to Ising ($Z_2$), $O(n)$, and hypercubic ($S_n \ltimes (Z_2)^n$) CFTs, relevant for a plethora of real-world critical phenomena. The computed scaling dimensions agree well with known non-perturbative results, and they lead to new predictions where such results do not yet exist. We thereby expand the understanding of generic EFTs and open new possibilities in diverse fields, such as the numerical conformal bootstrap.

Renormalization and non-renormalization of scalar EFTs at higher orders

We renormalize massless scalar effective field theories (EFTs) to higher loop orders and higher orders in the EFT expansion. To facilitate EFT calculations with the R* renormalization method, we construct suitable operator bases using Hilbert series and related ideas in commutative algebra and conformal representation theory, including their novel application to off-shell correlation functions. We obtain new results ranging from full one loop at mass dimension twelve to five loops at mass dimension six. We explore the structure of the anomalous dimension matrix with an emphasis on its zeros, and investigate the effects of conformal and orthonormal operators. For the real scalar, the zeros can be explained by a `non-renormalization' rule recently derived by Bern et al. For the complex scalar we find two new selection rules for mixing $n$- and $(n-2)$-field operators, with $n$ the maximal number of fields at a fixed mass dimension. The first appears only when the $(n-2)$-field operator is conformal primary, and is valid at one loop. The second appears in more generic bases, and is valid at three loops. Finally, we comment on how the Hilbert series we construct may be used to provide a systematic enumeration of a class of evanescent operators that appear at a particular mass dimension in the scalar EFT.

A log story short: running contributions to radiative Higgs decays in the SMEFT

We investigate the renormalization of the radiative decays of the Higgs to two gauge bosons in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at mass dimension eight. Given that these are loop-level processes, their one-loop renormalization can be phenomenologically important when triggered by operators generated through the tree-level exchange of heavy particles (assuming a weakly coupled UV model). By computing the tree-level matching conditions of all relevant extensions of the Standard Model, we demonstrate that this effect is indeed present in the $h\to γZ$ decay at dimension eight, even though it is absent at dimension six. In contrast, the $h\to gg$ and $h\to γγ$ decays can only be renormalized by operators generated by one-loop processes. For UV models with heavy vectors, this conclusion hinges on the specific form of their interaction with massless gauge bosons which is required for perturbative unitarity. We study the quantitative impact of the possible logarithmic enhancement of $h\to γZ$, and we propose an observable to boost the sensitivity to this effect. Given the expected increased precision of next-generation high-energy experiments, this dimension-eight contribution could be large enough to be probed and could therefore give valuable clues about new physics by revealing some of its structural features manifesting first at dimension eight.

Field Redefinitions and Infinite Field Anomalous Dimensions

Field redefinitions are commonly used to reduce the number of operators in the Lagrangian by removing redundant operators and transforming to a minimal operator basis. We give a general argument that such field redefinitions, while leaving the $S$-matrix invariant and consequently finite, lead not only to infinite Green's functions, but also to infinite field anomalous dimensions $γ_ϕ$. These divergences cannot be removed by counterterms without reintroducing redundant operators.

Higher-derivative relations between scalars and gluons

We extend the covariant color-kinematics duality introduced by Cheung and Mangan to effective field theories. We focus in particular on relations between the effective field theories of gluons only and of gluons coupled to bi-adjoint scalars. Maps are established between their respective equations of motion and between their tree-level scattering amplitudes. An additional rule for the replacement of flavor structures by kinematic factors realizes the map between higher-derivative amplitudes. As an example of new relations, the pure-gluon amplitudes of mass dimension up to eight, featuring insertions of the $F^3$ and $F^4$ operators which satisfy the traditional color-kinematics duality, can be generated at all multiplicities from just renormalizable amplitudes of gluons and bi-adjoint scalars. We also obtain closed-form expressions for the kinematic numerators of the dimension-six gluon effective field theory, which are valid in $D$ space-time dimensions. Finally, we find strong evidence that this extended covariant color-kinematics duality relates the $(DF)^2+$YM$(+ϕ^3)$ theories which, at low energies, generate infinite towers of operators satisfying the traditional color-kinematics duality, beyond aforementioned $F^3$ and $F^4$ ones.

Non-linear non-renormalization theorems

We study the mixing of operators under renormalization group flow in quantum theories, and prove a non-renormalization theorem at non-linear order. It dictates zeros up to a certain number of loops in anomalous dimension tensors that control, for example, the mixing of operators at order dimension six squared into dimension eight. We obtain new results at up to three loops for the mass dimension eight anomalous dimension tensor of $ϕ^4$ theory in $D=4-2\varepsilon$ dimensions and verify the zeros predicted by the theorem.

The seeds of EFT double copy

We explore the double copy of effective field theories (EFTs), in the recently proposed generalized color-kinematics and Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) approaches. In the former, we systematically construct scalar numerators satisfying the Jacobi identities from simpler numerator "seeds" with trace-like permutation properties. This construction has the advantage of being easily applicable to any multiplicity, which we exemplify up to 6-point. It employs the linear map between color factors formed by single traces of generators and by products of the structure constants, which also relates the generalized KLT and color-kinematics formalisms, allowing to produce KLT kernels at arbitrary order in the EFT expansion. At 4-point, we show that all EFT kernels are generated and that they only yield double-copy amplitudes which can also be obtained from the traditional KLT kernel. We perform initial checks suggesting that the same conclusions also hold at 5-point. We focus on single-trace massless scalar EFTs which however also control the higher-derivative corrections to gauge and gravity theories.

Theoretical developments in the SMEFT at dimension-8 and beyond

In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension-9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the $1/Λ$ expansion for certain SMEFT observables as well as the current status of renormalization group running and implications for positivity, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses.
