Time2Vec: Learning a Vector Representation of Time

Time is an important feature in many applications involving events that occur synchronously and/or asynchronously. To effectively consume time information, recent studies have focused on designing new architectures. In this paper, we take an orthogonal but complementary approach by providing a model-agnostic vector representation for time, called Time2Vec, that can be easily imported into many existing and future architectures and improve their performances. We show on a range of models and problems that replacing the notion of time with its Time2Vec representation improves the performance of the final model.

Physical Resources for Quantum-enhanced Phase Estimation

We study the role of quantum entanglement (particle entanglement and mode entanglement) in optical phase estimation by employing the first and second quantization formalisms of quantum mechanics. The quantum Fisher information (QFI) is expressed as a function of the first and second order optical coherence functions. The resulting form of the QFI elucidates the deriving metrological resources for quantum phase estimation: field intensity and photon detection correlations. In addition, our analysis confirms that mode entanglement is not required for quantum-enhanced interferometry, whereas particle entanglement is a necessary requirement.

Quantum correlations in optical metrology: Heisenberg-limited phase estimation without mode entanglement

The quantum fisher information and quantum correlation parameters are employed to study the application of non-classical light to the problem of parameter estimation. It is shown that the optimal measurement sensitivity of a quantum state is determined by its inter-mode correlations (which depends of path-entanglement) and intra-mode correlations (which depends of the photon statistics). In light of these results, we consider the performance of quantum-enhanced optical interferometers. Furthermore, we propose a Heisenberg-limited metrology protocol involving standard elements from passive and active linear optics, for which the quantum Cramér-Rao bound is saturated with an intensity measurement. Interestingly, the quantum advantage for this scheme is derived solely from the non-classical photon statistics of the probe state and does not depend of entanglement. We study the performance of this scheme in the presence of realistic losses and consequently predict a substantial enhancement over the shot-noise limit with current technological capabilities.

Quantum-enhanced Phase Estimation with an Amplified Bell State

We propose a phase estimation protocol for optical interferometry that employs a probe state (containing on average n photons) obtained by squeezing each mode, separately, of a single photon path entangled Bell state. This scheme involves a Mach-Zehnder type interferometer for which each mode is squeezed after the first beam splitter. Information about the differential phase is extracted using a parity detection and the resulting measurement signal is super-resolving and supersensitive, with a minimum phase uncertainty 2/(n+1). This probe state can be generated with current technologies where n is in the order of many thousands of photons.
