Nonrelativistic effective field theory for heavy exotic hadrons

We propose an effective field theory to describe hadrons with two heavy quarks without any assumption on the typical distance between the heavy quarks with respect to the typical hadronic scale. The construction is based on Non-Relativistic QCD and inspired in the strong coupling regime of Potential Non-Relativistic QCD. We construct the effective theory at leading and next-to-leading order in the inverse heavy-quark mass expansion for arbitrary quantum numbers of the light degrees of freedom. Hence our results hold for hybrids, tetraquarks, double heavy baryons and pentaquarks, for which we also present the corresponding operators at Non-Relativistic level. At leading order, the effective theory enjoys heavy quark spin symmetry and corresponds to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. At next-to-leading order, spin and velocity dependent terms arise, which produce splittings in the heavy-quark spin symmetry multiplets. A concrete application to double heavy baryons is presented in an accompanying paper.

Hadronic Decays of a Higgs-mixed Scalar

One of the portals to new physics is a light scalar coupled to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs. In this paper we focus on hadronic decays of such a scalar in the regime where QCD dynamics is nonperturbative, resulting, e.g., in decays to pairs of pions or kaons, while also allowing for scalar couplings to the SM fermions to deviate from the Higgs-mixed light scalar limit. Representations of the corresponding form factors can be obtained using dispersive techniques, however, several sources of uncertainty affect the final results. We reexamine these decays, paying special attention to the quantification of uncertainties. For the light Higgs-mixed scalar scenario, we compare our results with previous works. For a general set of couplings of the light scalar to Standard Model fields, we provide a public code, {\tt hipsofcobra}, to compute the decay widths.

Effect of continuum states on the double-heavy hadron spectra

We present the leading order coupling of double-heavy hadrons to heavy hadron pairs in Born-Oppenheimer effective field theory. We obtain the expressions for the contribution of heavy hadron pairs to the masses and widths of double-heavy hadrons. We apply our result for the specific case of the coupling of the lowest lying heavy hybrids and $D_{(s)}^{(*)}\bar{D}_{(s)}^{(*)}(B_{(s)}^{(*)}\bar{B}_{(s)}^{(*)})$ obtaining a set of selection rules for the decays. We build a model for the coupling potential and compute the corresponding decay widths and the contributions to the mass of the heavy hybrids. We compare our results with the experimental exotic quarkonium spectrum and discuss the most likely experimental candidates for quarkonium hybrids.

Heavy meson thresholds in Born-Oppenheimer Effective field theory

We consider heavy meson-antimeson pairs and their coupling to quarkonium in the context of nonrelativistic EFTs incorporating the adiabatic expansion. We work out all the leading order couplings of quarkonium to heavy meson-antimeson pairs and obtain their contributions to the masses and widths of quarkonia. We match the new potentials terms to NRQCD. Using the available lattice data for the coupled system of quarkonium and the lowest laying heavy meson-antimeson pair, we extract the mixing potential and use it to compute numerically the contributions of $D\bar{D}(B\bar{B})$ and $D_s\bar{D}_s(B_s\bar{B}_s)$ to the masses and widths of the charmonium (bottomonium) states for $l=0,1,2$ and up to $n=6$ covering the states in threshold region. When a quarkonium state and a heavy meson-antimeson pair are separated by small energy gaps, their interactions can be described by a threshold EFT with contact interactions. We work out the matching between the two EFTs obtaining the couplings of the threshold EFT in terms of the mixing potential and quarkonium wave functions.

Chromopolarizabilities of fully-heavy baryons

We compute the chromopolarizabilities of the fully heavy baryons $Ω_{QQQ'}$ ($Q,Q'=b,c$) in the framework of potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. At leading order, the fully heavy hadrons are considered as ground chromo-Coulombic bound states. We find that the chromopolarizability $β_Ω$ of a fully heavy baryon $QQQ$ is 2.6 times the chromopolarizability $β_ψ$ of the quarkonium $\bar{Q}Q$ with the same heavy quark flavor $Q$. This result is accurate up to the correction of the order 0.3 for $Q=b$ and provides an order-of-magnitude estimate for $Q=c$. We discuss the dependence of the ratio $β_Ω/β_ψ$ on the heavy quark mass $m_Q$ and the strong coupling constant $α_s$ as well as on the ratio of the masses $m_{Q'}/m_Q$, in the case not all quarks in the baryon are identical. Since the chromopolarizability of heavy hadrons defines the strength of their interaction at low energies mediated by soft gluons, which at long range hadronize into pairs of pions and kaons, our findings argue in favor of the existence of near-threshold states composed of pairs of fully heavy baryons.

Exotic bottomonium hadronic transitions

We report on a recent computation of the transitions of exotic bottomonium to standard bottomonium and light quark hadrons. We work under the assumption that the $Υ(10753)$ and $Υ(11020)$ can be described as the lowest laying and first excitation $1^{--}$ hybrid bottomonium states, respectively. The computation has two distinct parts: the heavy quark transition matrix elements, which are obtained in a nonrelativistic EFT incorporating the heavy quark, multipole and adiabatic expansions; and the hadronization of the gluonic operators into the light-meson final states. The single mesons production is obtained through the axial anomaly and a standard $π^0-η-η'$ mixing scheme. Two pion and kaon production is obtained by solving the coupled Omnès problem. We also present result for semi-inclusive transitions.

Doubly heavy baryons in Born-Oppenheimer EFT

We report on the recent progress on the computation of the doubly heavy baryon spectrum in effective field theory. The effective field theory is built upon the heavy-quark mass and adiabatic expansions. The potentials can be expressed as NRQCD Wilson loops with operator insertions. These are nonperturbative objects and so far only the one corresponding to the static potential has been computed with lattice QCD. We review the proposal for a parametrization of the potentials based in an interpolation between the short- and long-distance regimes. The long-distance description is obtained with a newly proposed Effective String Theory which coincides with the previous ones for pure gluodynamics but it is extended to contain a fermion field. We show the doubly heavy baryon spectrum with hyperfine contributions obtained using these parametrizations for the hyperfine potentials.

Line shape and the experimental determination of the $J/ψ\to γη_c$ branching fraction

We study the photon spectrum line-shape of the $J/ψ\to γη_c\to γX$ decay process in a nonrelativistic effective field theory (EFT) framework of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We take into account the finite width of the $η_c$ and include $\mathcal{O}(v^2)$ corrections. We observe that the photon spectrum line-shape is divergent at large energies due to polynomially and logarithmically divergent terms, that upon integration over the photon energies in Dimensional Regularization (DR) produce no contribution or can be renormalized. We propose to subtract these divergences at the line-shape level in a manner consistent with the calculation of the width in DR and $\overline{\hbox{MS}}$ scheme. We analyze CLEO's data with the proposed subtracted line-shape and find good agreement between the theoretical prediction and the experimental result.

Effective QCD string and doubly heavy baryons

Expressions for the potentials appearing in the nonrelativistic effective field theory description of doubly heavy baryons are known in terms of operator insertions in the Wilson loop. However, their evaluation requires nonperturbative techniques, such as lattice QCD, and the relevant calculations are often not available. We propose a parametrization of these potentials with a minimal model dependence based on an interpolation of short- and long-distance descriptions. The short-distance description is obtained from weakly-coupled pNRQCD and the long-distance one is computed using an effective string theory. The effective string theory coincides with the one for pure gluodynamics with the addition of a fermion field constrained to move on the string. We compute the hyperfine contributions to the doubly heavy baryon spectrum. The unknown parameters are obtained from heavy quark-diquark symmetry or fitted to the available lattice QCD determinations of the hyperfine splittings. Using these parameters we compute the double charm and bottom baryon spectrum including the hyperfine contributions. We compare our results with those of other approaches and find that our results are closer to lattice QCD determinations, in particular for the excited states. Furthermore, we compute the vacuum energy in the effective string theory and show that the fermion field contribution produces the running of the string tension and a change of sign in the Lüscher term.

Effective field theory for double heavy baryons at strong coupling

We present an effective field theory for doubly heavy baryons that goes beyond the compact heavy diquark approximation. The heavy-quark distance $r$ is only restricted to $m_Q\gg 1/r \gg E_{bin}$, where $m_Q$ is the mass of the heavy quark and $E_{bin}$ the typical binding energy. This means that the size of the heavy diquark can be as large as the typical size of a light hadron. We start from Non-Relativistic QCD, and build the effective field theory at next-to-leading in the $1/m_Q$ expansion. At leading order the effective field theory reduces to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The BO potentials are obtained from available lattice QCD data. The spectrum for double charm baryons below threshold is compatible with most of the lattice QCD results. We present for the first time the full spin averaged double bottom baryon spectrum below threshold based on QCD. We also present model-independent formulas for the spin splittings.

Exotic to standard bottomonium transitions

We study the transition widths of $Υ(10753)$ and $Υ(11020)$ into standard bottomonium under the hypothesis that they correspond to the two lowest laying $1^{--}$ hybrid bottomonium states. We employ weakly coupled potential NRQCD an effective filed theory incorporating the heavy quark and multipole expansions. We consider the transitions generated by the leading order and next-to-leading order singlet-octet operators. In the multipole expansion the heavy quark matrix elements factorize from the production of light-quark mesons by gluonic operators. For the leading order operator we compute the widths with a single $π^0$, $η$ or $η'$ in the final state and for the next-to-leading operator for $π^+π^-$ or $K^+K^-$. The hadronization of the gluonic operators is obtained, in the first case, from the axial anomaly and a standard $π^0-η-η'$ mixing scheme and, in the second case, we employ a coupled-channel dispersive representation matched to chiral perturbation theory for both the $S$ and $D$ wave pieces of the gluonic operator. We compare with experimental values and semi-inclusive widths. Our results strongly suggest that $Υ(11020)$ is indeed a hybrid bottomonium state.

QCD spin effects in the heavy hybrid potentials and spectra

The spin-dependent operators for heavy quarkonium hybrids have been recently obtained in a nonrelativistic effective field theory approach up to next-to-leading order in the heavy-quark mass expansion. In the effective field theory for hybrids several operators not found in standard quarkonia appear, including an operator suppressed by only one power of the heavy-quark mass. We compute the matching coefficients for these operators in the short heavy-quark-antiquark distance regime, $r\ll 1/Λ_{\rm QCD}$, by matching weakly-coupled potential NRQCD to the effective field theory for hybrids. In this regime the perturbative and nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients factorize, and the latter can be expressed in terms of purely gluonic correlators whose form we explicitly calculate with the aid of the transformation properties of the gluon fields under discrete symmetries. We detail our previous comparison with direct lattice computations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum, from which the unknown nonperturbative contributions can be obtained, and extend it to data sets with different light-quark masses.

Spin structure of heavy-quark hybrids

A unique feature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions, is the possibility for gluonic degrees of freedom to participate in the construction of physical hadrons, which are color singlets, in an analogous manner to valence quarks. Hadrons with no valence quarks are called glueballs, while hadrons where both gluons and valence quarks combine to form a color singlet are called hybrids. The unambiguous identification of such states among the experimental hadron spectrum has been thus far not possible. Glueballs are particularly difficult to establish experimentally since the lowest lying ones are expected to strongly mix with conventional mesons. On the other hand, hybrids should be easier to single out because the set of quantum numbers available to their lowest excitations may be exotic, i.e., not realized in conventional quark-antiquark systems. Particularly promising for discovery appear to be heavy hybrids, which are made of gluons and a heavy-quark-antiquark pair (charm or bottom). In the heavy-quark sector systematic tools can be used that are not available in the light-quark sector. In this paper we use a nonrelativistic effective field theory to uncover for the first time the full spin structure of heavy-quark hybrids up to $1/m^2$-terms in the heavy-quark-mass expansion. We show that such terms display novel characteristics at variance with our consolidated experience on the fine and hyperfine splittings in atomic, molecular and nuclear physics. We determine the nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients of the effective field theory by fitting our results to lattice-QCD determinations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum and extrapolate the results to the bottomonium hybrid sector where lattice-QCD determinations are still challenging.

Novel implementation of the multipole expansion to quarkonium hadronic transitions

We compute hadronic transitions between heavy quarkonium states with two, or one, pion/eta particles in the final state. We use the multipole expansion but not the twist expansion. The latter cannot be justified for the energy release of hadronic transitions between heavy quarkonium states with different principal quantum numbers. Instead, we use a counting based on the dimension of the interpolating field of the hybrid. This alternative counting allows us to still use chiral low-energy theorems to compute the pion production by local gluonic operators. We explore the phenomenological impact of this counting. Remarkably enough, for the two-pion transitions, we obtain the same predictions for the normalized differential decay rate as those obtained assuming the twist expansion. We implement this computational scheme using the hadronic representation of the effective theory potential NRQCD. We assume that the inverse Bohr radius of the heavy quarkonium is much larger than $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ but do not impose any constraint on the relative size of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ and the typical kinetic energy of the bound state.

Spin Structure of heavy-quark hybrids

Exotic quarkonia are candidates to new types of hadrons including four quarks or gluonic degrees of freedom as constituents, the latter being a unique feature of QCD. We review recent developments in nonrelativistic EFTs to describe exotic quarkonia and in particular recent results on the spectrum of heavy hybrids including spin-dependent contributions up to $1/m_Q^2$-terms in the heavy-quark-mass expansion. We determine the nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients of the EFT by fitting our results to lattice-QCD determinations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum and extrapolate the results to the bottomonium hybrid sector where lattice-QCD determinations are still challenging. We also report on a recent new approach to quarkonium hadronic transitions that does not use the twist expansion and uses the hybrid spectrum as the intermediate octet states.

Heavy hybrids and tetraquarks in effective field theory

We report on an effective field theory (EFT) description of exotic quarkonia as bound states on the spectrum of hybrid and tetraquark static energies. We provide expressions for hybrid and tetraquark static energies in terms of Wilson loops. The former have been computed in quenched lattice calculations but the latter are yet unavailable. From the few simulations with dynamical light-quarks we argue that the overall picture from hybrid static energies does not change but additional states, such as heavy meson pairs, need to be considered for a full description. In this EFT framework for quarkonium hybrids, we report on recent results for mixing with standard quarkonium, spin-dependent contributions, and semi-inclusive decays.

Effective field theory for the nucleon-quarkonium interaction

We develop an effective field theory approach for the $S$-wave quarkonium-nucleon system. We adopt a natural power counting equivalent to Weinberg's power counting in nucleon-nucleon effective field theories and compute the quarkonium-nucleon potential, scattering length and effective range up to $\mathcal{O}(m^3_π/Λ^3_χ)$ accuracy, including the full light-quark mass dependence. We compare our results with lattice QCD studies of quarkonium-nucleon system, obtain an estimation of the leading order quarkonium-nucleon contact term and determine the $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ chromopolarizabilities.

The Born-Oppenheimer approximation in an effective field theory language

The Born--Oppenheimer approximation is the standard tool for the study of molecular systems. It is founded on the observation that the energy scale of the electron dynamics in a molecule is larger than that of the nuclei. A very similar physical picture can be used to describe QCD states containing heavy quarks as well as light-quarks or gluonic excitations. In this work, we derive the Born--Oppenheimer approximation for QED molecular systems in an effective field theory framework by sequentially integrating out degrees of freedom living at energies above the typical energy scale where the dynamics of the heavy degrees of freedom occurs. In particular, we compute the matching coefficients of the effective field theory for the case of the $H^+_2$ diatomic molecule that are relevant to compute its spectrum up to ${\cal O}(mα^5)$. Ultrasoft photon loops contribute at this order, being ultimately responsible for the molecular Lamb shift. In the effective field theory the scaling of all the operators is homogeneous, which facilitates the determination of all the relevant contributions, an observation that may become useful for high-precision calculations. Using the above case as a guidance, we construct under some conditions an effective field theory for QCD states formed by a color-octet heavy quark-antiquark pair bound with a color-octet light-quark pair or excited gluonic state, highlighting the similarities and differences between the QED and QCD systems. Assuming that the multipole expansion is applicable, we construct the heavy-quark potential up to next-to-leading order in the multipole expansion in terms of nonperturbative matching coefficients to be obtained from lattice QCD.
