Bouncing cosmologies via modified gravity in the ADM formalism: Application to Loop Quantum Cosmology

We consider the ADM formalism as a tool to build bouncing cosmologies. In this approach, the foliation of the spacetime has to be fixed in order to go beyond General Relativity modifying the gravitational sector. Once a preferred slicing, which we choose based on the matter content of the universe following the spirit of Weyl's postulate, has been fixed, $f$ theories depending on the extrinsic and intrinsic curvature of the slicing are covariant for all the reference frames preserving the foliation, i.e., the constraint and dynamical equations have the same form for all these observers. Moreover, choosing multivalued $f$ functions, bouncing backgrounds emerge in a natural way. In fact, the simplest is the one corresponding to holonomy corrected Loop Quantum Cosmology. The final goal of this work is to provide the equations of perturbations which, unlike the full equations, become gauge invariant in this theory, and apply them to the so-called matter bounce scenario.

Quintessential inflation at low reheating temperatures

We have tested some simple quintessential inflation models, imposing that they match with the recent observational data provided by the BICEP and Planck's team and leading to a reheating temperature, which is obtained via gravitational particle production after inflation, supporting the nucleosynthesis success. Moreover, for the models coming from supergravity one needs to demand low temperatures in order to avoid problems such as the gravitino overproduction or the gravitational production of moduli fields, which are obtained only when the reheating temperature is due to the production of massless particles with a coupling constant very close to its conformal value.

Qualitative study in Loop Quantum Cosmology

This work contains a detailed qualitative analysis, in General Relativity and in Loop Quantum Cosmology, of the dynamics in the associated phase space of a scalar field minimally coupled with gravity, whose potential mimics the dynamics of a perfect fluid with a linear Equation of State (EoS). Dealing with the orbits (solutions) of the system, we will see that there are analytic ones, which lead to the same dynamics as the perfect fluid, and our goal is to check their stability, depending on the value of the EoS parameter, i.e., to show whether the other orbits converge or diverge to these analytic solutions at early and late times.

Viscous Cosmology for Early- and Late-Time Universe

From a hydrodynamicist's point of view the inclusion of viscosity concepts in the macroscopic theory of the cosmic fluid would appear most natural, as an ideal fluid is after all an abstraction (excluding special cases such as superconductivity). Making use of modern observational results for the Hubble parameter plus standard Friedmann formalism, we may extrapolate the description of the universe back in time up to the inflationary era, or we may go to the opposite extreme and analyze the probable ultimate fate of the universe. In this review we discuss a variety of topics in cosmology when it is enlarged in order to contain a bulk viscosity. Various forms of this viscosity, when expressed in terms of the fluid density or the Hubble parameter, are discussed. Furthermore, we consider homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous equations of state. We investigate viscous cosmology in the early universe, examining the viscosity effects on the various inflationary observables. Additionally, we study viscous cosmology in the late universe, containing current acceleration and the possible future singularities, and we investigate how one may even unify inflationary and late-time acceleration. Finally, we analyze the viscosity-induced crossing through the quintessence-phantom divide, we examine the realization of viscosity-driven cosmological bounces, and we briefly discuss how the Cardy-Verlinde formula is affected by viscosity.

Reheating constraints in quintessential inflation

We study the consequences of reheating in quintessential inflation. From simple inflationary quintessential models introduced in cite{hap, hap2}, we show that when the reheating is due to the production of heavy massive particles conformally coupled with gravity, a viable model which matches with the current observational data cite{Ade, Planck, bicep2} is only possible for reheating temperatures that range between $1$ GeV and $10^4$ GeV. On the other hand, when the universe reheats via the production of massless particles, the viability of the model is only possible when those particles are nearly conformally coupled with gravity, leading to a reheating temperature between $1$ MeV and $10^4$ GeV.

Cosmological solutions in spatially curved universes with adiabatic particle production

We perform a qualitative and thermodynamic study of two models when one takes into account adiabatic particle production. In the first one, there is a constant particle production rate, which leads to solutions depicting the current cosmic acceleration but without inflation. The other one has solutions that unify the early and late time acceleration. These solutions converge asymptotically to the thermal equilibrium.

On the viability of quintessential inflationary models from observational data

Assuming that primordial density fluctuationas are nearly Gaussian, from a frequentist viewpoint, the two-dimensional marginalized joint coincidence contour in the plane $(n_s,r)$ (being $n_s$ the spectral index and $r$ the ratio of tensor to scalar perturbations), without the presence of running is usually used to test the viability of the inflationary models. The models that provide, between $50$ and $60$ e-folds, a curve in that plane, which lies outside the $95.5 \%$ C.L are ruled out. I will basically argue that the this low number of e-folds is unjustified, and that models leading to a theoretical value of the running different from zero must be checked with observational data allowing the running. When both prescriptions are taken into account, dealing in the context of quintessential inflation, i.e. when the potential is a combination of an inflationary with a quintessential one that leads to a deflationary regime, inflationary models such as the quartic or the Higgs potential are allowed.

Simple inflationary quintessential model II: Power law potentials

The present work is a sequel of our previous work Phys.Rev.D { 93}, 084018 (2016) [arXiv:1601.08175 [gr-qc]] cite{hap} which depicted a simple version of an inflationary quintessential model whose inflationary stage was described by a Higgs type potential and the quintessential phase was responsible due to an exponential potential. Additionally, the model predicted a nonsingular universe in past which was geodesically past incomplete. Further, it was also found that the model is in agreement with the Planck 2013 data when running is allowed. But, this model was found to be unsuccessful with Planck 2015 data with or without running. However, in this sequel we propose a family of models runs by a single parameter $alpha in [0, 1]$ which proposes another "inflationary quintessential model" where the inflation and the quintessence regimes are respectively described by a power law potential and a cosmological constant. The model is also nonsingular although geodesically past incomplete as in the cited model. However, the present one is found to be more simple in compared to the previous model and it is in excellent agreement with the observational data. We note that unlike the previous model which matched only with Planck 2013 data in presence of running, a large number of the models of this family with $alpha in [0,1/2)$ matches with both Planck 2013 and Planck 2015 data whether the running is allowed or not. Thus, the properties in the current family of models in compared to its past companion justify its need for a better cosmological model with the successive improvement of the observational data.1

Discrepancies between observational data and theoretical forecast in single field slow roll inflation

The PLANCK collaboration has determined values for the spectral parameters of the CMB radiation, namely the spectral index $n_s$, its running $α_s$, the running of the running $β_s$, using a growing body of measurements of CMB anisotropies by the Planck satellite and other missions. These values do not follow the hierarchy of sizes predicted by single field, slow roll inflationary theory, and are thus difficult to fit for such inflation models. In this work we present first a study of 49 single field, slow roll inflationary potentials in which we assess the likelyhood of these models fitting the spectral parameters to their currently most accurate determination given by the PLANCK collaboration. We check numerically with a MATLAB program the spectral parameters that each model can yield for a very broad, comprehensive list of possible parameter and field values. The comparison of spectral parameter values supported by the models with their determinations by the PLANCK collaboration leads to the conclusion that the data provided by PLANCK2015 TT+lowP and PLANCK2015 TT,TE,EE+lowP taking into account the running of the running disfavours 40 of the 49 models with confidence level at least 92.8\%. Next, we discuss the reliability of the current computations of these spectral parameters. We identify a bias in the method of determination of the spectral parameters by least residue parameter fitting (using MCMC or any other scheme) currently used to reconstruct the power spectrum of scalar perturbations. This bias can explain the observed contradiction between theory and observations. Its removal is computationally costly, but necessary in order to compare the forecasts of single field, slow roll theories with observations.

Gravitationally induced adiabatic particle production: From Big Bang to de Sitter

In the background of a flat homogeneous and isotropic space-time, we consider a scenario of the universe driven by the gravitationally induced `adiabatic' particle production with constant creation rate. We have shown that this universe attains a big bang singularity in the past and at late-time it asymptotically becomes de Sitter. To clarify this model universe, we perform a dynamical analysis and found that the universe attains a thermodynamic equilibrium in this late de Sitter phase. Finally, for the first time, we have discussed the possible effects of `adiabatic' particle creations in the context of Loop Quantum Cosmology.

Bouncing cosmologies in geometries with positively curved spatial sections

Background boucing cosmologies in the framework of General Relativity, driven by a single scalar field filling the Universe, and with a quasi-matter domination period, i.e., depicting the so-called Matter Bounce Scenario, are reconstructed for geometries with positive spatial curvature. These cosmologies lead to a nearly flat power spectrum of the curvature fluctuations in co-moving coordinates for modes that leave the Hubble radius during the quasi-matter domination period, and whose spectral index and its running, which are related with the effective Equation of State parameter given by the quotient of the pressure over the energy density, are compatible with observational data.

Teleparallel loop quantum cosmology in a system of intersecting branes

Recently, some authors have removed the big bang singularity in teleparallel Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) and have shown that the universe may undergo a number of oscillations. We investigate the origin of this type of teleparallel theory in a system of intersecting branes in M-theory in which the angle between them changes with time. This system is constructed by two intersecting anti-D8-branes, one compacted D4-brane and the other a D3-brane. These branes are built by joining M0-branes which develop in decaying fundamental strings. The compacted D4-brane is located between two intersecting anti-D8 branes and glues to one of them. Our universe is located on the D3 brane which wraps the D4 brane from one end and sticks to one of the anti-D8 branes from another one. In this system, there are three types of fields, corresponding to compacted D4 branes, intersecting branes and D3-branes. These fields interact with each other and make the angle between branes oscillate. By decreasing this angle and approaching the intersecting anti-D8 branes towards each other, the D4 brane rolls, the D3 brane wraps around the D4 brane, and t he universe contracts. By separating the intersecting branes and increasing the angle, the D4 brane rolls in the opposite direction, the D3 brane separates from it and the expansion branch begins. Also, the interaction between branes in this system gives us the exact form of the relevant Lagrangian for teleparallel LQC.

Evolution and Dynamics of a Matter creation model

In a flat Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry, we consider the expansion of the universe powered by the gravitationally induced `adiabatic' matter creation. To demonstrate how matter creation works well with the expanding universe, we have considered a general creation rate and analyzed this rate in the framework of dynamical analysis. The dynamical analysis hints the presence of a non-singular universe (without the big bang singularity) with two successive accelerated phases, one at the very early phase of the universe (i.e. inflation), and the other one describes the current accelerating universe, where this early, late accelerated phases are associated with an unstable fixed point (i.e. repeller) and a stable fixed (attractor) points, respectively. We have described this phenomena by analytic solutions of the Hubble function and the scale factor of the FLRW universe. Using Jacobi Last multiplier method, we have found a Lagrangian for this matter creation rate describing this scenario of the universe. To match with our early physics results, we introduce an equivalent dynamics driven by a single scalar field and discussed the associated observable parameters compared them with the latest PLANCK data sets. Finally, introducing the teleparallel modified gravity, we have established an equivalent gravitational theory in the framework of matter creation.

A simple nonsingular inflationary quintessential model

In the framework of a flat Friedmann-Lema{\^ı}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry, we present a nonsingular model (no big bang singularity at finite time) of our universe describing its evolution starting from its early inflationary era up to the present accelerating phase. We found that a hydrodynamical fluid with nonlinear equation of state could result in such a non singular scenario, which after the end of this inflationary stage, suffers a sudden phase transition and enters into the stiff matter dominated era, and the universe becomes reheated due to a huge amount of particle production. Finally, it asymptotically enters into the de Sitter phase concluding the present accelerated expansion. We show that the background providing an inflationary potential leads to a power spectrum of the cosmological perturbations which fit well with the latest Planck estimations. At the end, we compared our viable potential with some known inflationary quintessential potentials, which shows that, our model is an improved version of them because it contains an analytic solution that allows us to perform analytic calculations.

An Extended Matter Bounce Scenario: current status and challenges

As an alternative to the paradigm of slow roll inflation, we propose an extended scenario of the matter bounce cosmology in which the Universe has experienced a quasi-matter contracting phase with a variable background equation of state parameter. This extended matter bounce scenario can be realized by considering a single scalar field evolving along an approximately exponential potential. Our result reveals that the rolling of the scalar field in general leads to a running behavior on the spectral index of primordial cosmological perturbations and a negative running can be realized in this model. We constrain the corresponding parameter space by using the newly released Planck data. To apply this scenario, we revisit bouncing cosmologies within the context of modified gravity theories, in particular, the holonomy corrected loop quantum cosmology and teleparallel $F(T)$ gravity. A gravitational process of reheating is presented in such a matter bounce scenario to demonstrate the condition of satisfying current observations. We also comment on several unresolved issues that often appear in matter bounce models.

The twilight of the single field slow rolling inflaton

We present an study from PLANCK2013+WP+BAO:$Λ$CDM+$r$+$α_s$ data, where 49 slow roll inflationary potentials are tested, showing that the theoretical value of the running provided by 48 of these potentials has a deviation to the expected observational value larger than $1.6σ$, and its modulus is smaller than the modulus of the expected observational one, what disfavours these models at 94.5 \% of Confidence Level (C.L.), concluding from these results that, inflationary cosmology may require multiple fields or a breakdown of slow roll condition. This conclusion has drastically changed with the last data provided by PLANCK2015 where the modulus of the expected observational value of the running has been reduced one order, getting shorter the distance to its theoretical value $1σ$ or more, what allows the viability of the majority of the potentials disfavored by the running provided by PLANCK2013 data. However if one takes into account the running of the running, its theoretical value, which in the slow roll regime depends on the slow roll parameters at third order, is incompatible with the expected observational value provided by PLANCK2013 and PLANCK2015, disfavouring at 92.8 \% C.L. or more, 39 of the 49 slow roll potentials tested. Moreover, if one restricts the number of e-folds to be between 30 and 80, then only two potentials will survive to this test.

Viability of the Matter Bounce Scenario

It is shown that teleparallel $F({\mathcal T})$ theories of gravity combined with Loop Quantum Cosmology support a Matter Bounce Scenario which is an alternative to the inflation scenario in the Big Bang paradigm. It is checked thatthese bouncing models provide theoretical data that fits well with the current observational data, allowing the viability of the Matter Bounce Scenario.
