Spectral sets for numerical range

We define and study a numerical-range analogue of the notion of spectral set. Among the results obtained are a positivity criterion and a dilation theorem, analogous to those already known for spectral sets. An important difference from the classical definition is the role played in the new definition by the base point. We present some examples to illustrate this aspect.

Finite Blaschke products: a survey

A finite Blaschke product is a product of finitely many automorphisms of the unit disk. This brief survey covers some of the main topics in the area, including characterizations of finite Blaschke products, approximation theorems, derivatives and residues of finite Blaschke products, geometric localization of zeros, and selected other topics.

Real complex functions

We survey a few classes of analytic functions on the disk that have real boundary values almost everywhere on the unit circle. We explore some of their properties, various decompositions, and some connections these functions make to operator theory.

A Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem for modules and applications to holomorphic function spaces

We generalize the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem to modules. As an application, we show that every linear functional on a Hardy space that is non-zero on outer functions is a multiple of a point evaluation. A further consequence is that every linear endomorphism of a Hardy space that maps outer functions to nowhere-zero functions is a weighted composition operator. In neither case is continuity assumed. We also consider some extensions to other function spaces, including the Bergman, Dirichlet and Besov spaces, the little Bloch space and VMOA.

Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

We consider Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights. This class contains both the harmonic weights and the power weights. Our main result is a characterization of the Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights that can be identified as de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. As an application, we obtain the dilation inequality \[ {\cal D}_ω(f_r)\le \frac{2r}{1+r}{\cal D}_ω(f) \qquad(0\le r<1), \] where ${\cal D}_ω$ denotes the Dirichlet integral with superharmonic weight $ω$, and $f_r(z):=f(rz)$ is the $r$-dilation of the holomorphic function $f$.

On mapping theorems for numerical range

Let $T$ be an operator on a Hilbert space $H$ with numerical radius $w(T)\le1$. According to a theorem of Berger and Stampfli, if $f$ is a function in the disk algebra such that $f(0)=0$, then $w(f(T))\le\|f\|_\infty$. We give a new and elementary proof of this result using finite Blaschke products. A well-known result relating numerical radius and norm says $\|T\| \leq 2w(T)$. We obtain a local improvement of this estimate, namely, if $w(T)\le1$ then \[ \|Tx\|^2\le 2+2\sqrt{1-|\langle Tx,x\rangle|^2} \qquad(x\in H,~\|x\|\le1). \] Using this refinement, we give a simplified proof of Drury's teardrop theorem, which extends the Berger-Stampfli theorem to the case $f(0)\ne0$.

Cyclicity in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions

We introduce a large family of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H} \subset \mbox{Hol}(\mathbb{D})$, which include the classical Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathcal{D}_α$, by requiring normalized monomials to form a Riesz basis for $\mathcal{H}$. Then, after precisely evaluating the $n$-th optimal norm and the $n$-th approximant of $f(z)=1-z$, we completely characterize the cyclicity of functions in $\mbox{Hol}(\overline{\mathbb{D}})$ with respect to the forward shift.

Nonextreme de Branges-Rovnyak spaces as models for contractions

The de Branges--Rovnyak spaces are known to provide an alternate functional model for contractions on a Hilbert space, equivalent to the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model. The scalar de Branges--Rovnyak spaces $\mathcal{H}(b)$ have essentially different properties, according to whether the defining function $b$ is or not extreme in the unit ball of $H^\infty$. For $b$ extreme the model space is just $\mathcal{H}(b)$, while for $b$ nonextreme an additional construction is required. In the present paper we identify the precise class of contractions which have as a model $\mathcal{H}(b)$ with $b$ nonextreme.

On zero sets in the Dirichlet space

We study the zeros sets of functions in the Dirichlet space. Using Carleson formula for Dirichlet integral, we obtain some new families of zero sets. We also show that any closed subset of $E \subset \TT$ with logarithmic capacity zero is the accumulation points of the zeros of a function in the Dirichlet space. The zeros satisfy a growth restriction which depends on $E$.

On a characterization of finite Blaschke products

We study the convergence of a sequence of finite Blaschke products of a fix order toward a rotation. This would enable us to get a better picture of a characterization theorem for finite Blaschke products.

Bounded symbols and reproducing kernel thesis for truncated Toeplitz operators

Compressions of Toeplitz operators to coinvariant subspaces of $H^2$ are called truncated Toeplitz operators. We study two questions related to these operators. The first, raised by Sarason, is whether boundedness of the operator implies the existence of a bounded symbol; the second is the reproducing kernel thesis. We show that in general the answer to the first question is negative, and we exhibit some classes of spaces for which the answers to both questions are positive.

Weighted norm inequalities for de Branges--Rovnyak spaces and their applications

Let $\mathcal{H}(b)$ denote the de Branges--Rovnyak space associated with a function $b$ in the unit ball of $H^\infty(\mathbb{C}_+)$. We study the boundary behavior of the derivatives of functions in $\mathcal{H}(b)$ and obtain weighted norm estimates of the form $\|f^{(n)}\|_{L^2(μ)} \le C\|f\|_{\mathcal{H}(b)}$, where $f \in \mathcal{H}(b)$ and $μ$ is a Carleson-type measure on $\mathbb{C}_+\cup\mathbb{R}$. We provide several applications of these inequalities. We apply them to obtain embedding theorems for $\mathcal{H}(b)$ spaces. These results extend Cohn and Volberg--Treil embedding theorems for the model (star-invariant) subspaces which are special classes of de Branges--Rovnyak spaces. We also exploit the inequalities for the derivatives to study stability of Riesz bases of reproducing kernels $\{k^b_{λ_n}\}$ in $\mathcal{H}(b)$ under small perturbations of the points $λ_n$.

Integral representation of the $n$-th derivative in de Branges-Rovnyak spaces and the norm convergence of its reproducing kernel

In this paper, we give an integral representation for the boundary values of derivatives of functions of the de Branges--Rovnyak spaces $\HH(b)$, where $b$ is in the unit ball of $H^\infty(\CC_+)$. In particular, we generalize a result of Ahern--Clark obtained for functions of the model spaces $K_b$, where $b$ is an inner function. Using hypergeometric series, we obtain a nontrivial formula of combinatorics for sums of binomial coefficients. Then we apply this formula to show the norm convergence of reproducing kernel $k_{ω,n}^b$ of the evaluation of $n$-th derivative of elements of $\HH(b)$ at the point $ω$ as it tends radially to a point of the real axis.

Boundary behavior of functions in the de Branges--Rovnyak spaces

This paper deals with the boundary behavior of functions in the de Branges--Rovnyak spaces. First, we give a criterion for the existence of radial limits for the derivatives of functions in the de Branges--Rovnyak spaces. This criterion generalizes a result of Ahern-Clark. Then we prove that the continuity of all functions in a de Branges--Rovnyak space on an open arc $I$ of the boundary is enough to ensure the analyticity of these functions on $I$. We use this property in a question related to Bernstein's inequality.

Integral means of the derivatives of Blaschke products

We study the rate of growth of some integral means of the derivatives of a Blaschke product and we generalize several classical results. Moreover, we obtain the rate of growth of integral means of the derivative of functions in the model subspace $K_B$ generated by the Blaschke product $B$
