Moderately Discontinuous Homology

We introduce a new metric homology theory, Moderately Discontinuous Homology, which captures Lipschitz properties of metric subanalytic germs. The main novelty is to allow "moderately discontinuous" chains, which are specially advantageous for capturing the subtleties of the outer metric phenomena. Our invariant is a finitely generated graded abelian group $MDH^b_\bullet$ for any $b\in [1,\infty]$ and homomorphisms $MDH^b_\bullet\to MDH^{b'}_\bullet$ for any $b\geq b'$. Here $b$ is a "discontinuity rate". The homology groups for the inner or outer metric are proved to be finitely generated and that only finitely many homomorphisms $MDH^b_\bullet\to MDH^{b'}_\bullet$ are essential. For $b=1$ it recovers the homology of the tangent cone for the outer metric and of the Gromov tangent cone for the inner one. In general, for $b=\infty$ the $MD$- homology recovers the homology of the punctured germ. Hence, our invariant interpolates from the germ to its tangent cone. Our homology theory is a bi-Lipschitz subanalitic invariant, is invariant by suitable metric homotopies, and satisfies versions of the relative and Mayer-Vietoris long exact sequences. Moreover, fixed a discontinuity rate $b$ we show that it is functorial for a class of discontinuous Lipschitz maps, whose discontinuities are $b$-moderated; this makes the theory quite flexible. In the complex analytic setting we introduce an enhancement called Framed MD Homology, which takes into account information from fundamental classes. As applications we prove that Moderately Discontinuous Homology characterizes smooth germs among all complex analytic germs, recovers the number of irreducible components of complex analytic germs and the embedded topological type of plane branches. Framed MD Homology recovers the topological type of any plane curve singularity and relative multiplicities of complex analytic germs.

Tête-à-tête twists, monodromies and representation of elements of Mapping Class Group

We study monodromies of plane curve singularities and pseudo-periodic homeomorphisms of oriented surfaces with boundary, following an original idea of the first author: tête-à-tête graphs and twists. We completely characterize mapping classes that can be represented by tête-à-tête twists, and generalize the notion to be able to represent any class of the mapping class group relative to the boundary which is boundary-free periodic. This improves previous work on the subject by C. Graf. Furthermore, we introduce the class of mixed tête-à-tête graphs and twists, and prove that mixed tête-à-tête twists contain monodromies of irreducible plane curve singularities. In a sequel paper, the fourth author and B. Sigurdsson have extended this to the reducible case.

Reflexive modules on normal Gorenstein Stein surfaces, their deformations and moduli

In this paper we generalize Artin-Verdier, Esnault and Wunram construction of McKay correspondence to arbitrary Gorenstein surface singularities. The key idea is the definition and a systematic use of a degeneracy module, which is an enhancement of the first Chern class construction via a degeneracy locus. We study also deformation and moduli questions. Among our main result we quote: a full classification of special reflexive MCM modules on normal Gorenstein surface singularities in terms of divisorial valuations centered at the singularity, a first Chern class determination at an adequate resolution of singularities, construction of moduli spaces of special reflexive modules, a complete classification of Gorenstein normal surface singularities in representation types, and a study on the deformation theory of MCM modules and its interaction with their pullbacks at resolutions. For the proof of these theorems we prove several isomorphisms between different deformation functors that we expect that will be useful in further work.

Intersection Space Constructible Complexes

We present an obstruction theoretic inductive construction of intersection space pairs, which generalizes Banagl's construction of intersection spaces for arbitrary depth stratifications. We construct intersection space pairs for pseudomanifolds with compatible trivial structures at the link fibrations; this includes the case of toric varieties. We define intersection space complexes in an axiomatic way, similar to Goresky-McPherson axioms for intersection cohomology. We prove that if the intersection space exists, then the pseudomanifold has an intersection space complex whose hypercohomology recovers the cohomology of the intersection space pair. We characterize existence and uniqueness of intersection space complexes in terms of the derived category of constructible complexes. We show that intersection space complexes of algebraic varieties lift to the derived category of Mixed Hodge Modules, endowing intersection space cohomology with a Mixed Hodge Structure. We find classes of examples admitting intersection space complex, and counterexamples not admitting them; they are in particular the first examples known not admitting Banagl intersection spaces. We prove that the (shifted) Verdier dual of an intersection space complex is an intersection space complex. We prove a generic Poincare duality theorem for intersection space complexes.

On the generalized Nash problem for smooth germs and adjacencies of curve singularities

In this paper we explore the generalized Nash problem for arcs on a germ of smooth surface: given two prime divisors above its special point, to determine whether the arc space of one of them is included in the arc space of the other one. We prove that this problem is combinatorial and we explore its relation with several notions of adjacency of plane curve singularities.

The boundary of the Milnor fibre of complex and real analytic non-isolated singularities

Let f and g be holomorphic function-germs vanishing at the origin of a complex analytic germ of dimension three. Suppose that they have no common irreducible component and that the real analytic map-germ given by the multiplication of f by the conjugate of g has an isolated critical value at 0. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the real analytic map-germ to have a Milnor fibration and we prove that in this case the boundary of its Milnor fibre is a Waldhausen manifold. As an intermediate milestone we describe geometrically the Milnor fibre of map-germs given by the multiplication of a holomorphic and a anti-holomorphic function defined in a complex surface germ, and we prove an A'Campo-type formula for the zeta function of their monodromy.

The Hilali Conjecture for hyperelliptic spaces

The Hilali Conjecture predicts that for a simply-connected elliptic space, the total dimension of the rational homotopy does not exceed that of the rational homology. Here we give a proof of this conjecture for a class of elliptic spaces known as hyperelliptic.

On homotopy types of complements of analytic sets and Milnor fibres

We prove that for any germ of complex analytic set in $\CC^n$ there exists a hypersurface singularity whose Milnor fibration has trivial geometric monodromy and fibre homotopic to the complement of the germ of complex analytic set. As an application we show an example of a quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, with trivial geometric monodromy and simply connected and non-formal Milnor fibre.

Nash problem for surface singularities is a topological problem

We address Nash problem for surface singularities using wedges. We give a refinement of the characterisation of A. Reguera of the image of the Nash map in terms of wedges. Our improvement consists in a characterisation of the bijectivity of the Nash mapping using wedges defined over the base field, which are convergent if the base field is the field of complex numbers, and whose generic arc has transverse lifting to the exceptional divisor of a resolution of singularities. This improves the recent results of M. Lejeune-Jalabert and A. Reguera for the surface case. In the way to do this we find a reformulation of Nash problem in terms of branched covers of normal surface singularities. As a corollary of this reformulation we prove that the image of the Nash mapping is characterised by the combinatorics of a resolution of the singularity, or, what is the same, by the topology of the abstract link of the singularity in the complex analytic case. Using these results we prove several reductions of the Nash problem, the most notable being that, if Nash problem is true for singularities having rational homology sphere links, then it is true in general.

On algebraic representatives of homeomorphism types of analytic hypersurface germs

A question of B. Teissier, inspired by a previous problem of R. Thom, asks whether for any germ of complex analytic hypersurface there exists a germ of complex algebraic hypersurface with the same topological type. Up to now only the case of germs with an isolated singularity is kwown. In this article we answer in the affirmative the case 1-dimensional singular set, also for embedded topological types.

Topology of hypersurface singularities with 3-dimensional critical set

In this paper, we prove that the Milnor fibre of a singularity over an i.c.i.s. of dimension 3 has the homotopy type of a bouquet of spheres, provided that the function that defines the singularity has finite extended codimension with respect to the ideal that defines the i.c.i.s.

Equisingularity at the Normalisation

We look at topological equisingularity of a holomorphic family of reduced mapping germs f_t:(C^3,O)->C over a contractible base T having non-isolated singularities, by means of their normalisations. We introduce the notion of Equisingularity at the Normalisation for a family f_t and prove that, in many cases, it characterises topological embedded equisingularity and $R$-equisingularity. Moreover we apply our results to the study of topological A-equisingularity of parametrised surfaces, and in many cases characterise it in terms of the constancy of the Milnor number of the inverse image of the singular sets of the parametrised surfaces. A novelty of our approach is that our topological trivialisations are global in the base.

Topological equisingularity of function germs with 1-dimensional critical set

We focus on topological equisingularity of families of holomorphic function germs with 1-dimensional critical set. We introduce the notion of equisingularity at the critical set and prove that any family which is equisingular at the critical set is topologically equisingular. We show that if a family of germs with 1-dimensional critical set has constant generic Le numbers then it is equisingular at the critical set, and hence topologically equisingular (answering a question of D. Massey). We use this to modify the definition of singularity stem present in the literature, introducing and characterising topological stems (being this concept closely related with Arnold's series of singularities). We provide another sufficient condition for topological equisingularity for families whose reduced critical set is deformed flatly. Finally we study how the critical set can be deformed in a topologically equisingular family and provide examples of topologically equisingular families whose critical set is a non-flat deformation with singular special fibre and smooth generic fibre.

Relative Morsification Theory

In this paper we develope a Morsification Theory for holomorphic functions defining a singularity of finite codimension with respect to an ideal, which recovers most previously known Morsification results for non-isolated singulatities and generalize them to a much wider context. We also show that deforming functions of finite codimension with respect to an ideal within the same ideal respects the Milnor fibration. Furthermore we present some applications of the theory: we introduce new numerical invariants for non-isolated singularities, which explain various aspects of the deformation of functions within an ideal; we define generalizations of the bifurcation variety in the versal unfolding of isolated singularities; applications of the theory to the topological study of the Milnor fibration of non-isolated singularities are presented. Using intersection theory in a generalized jet-space we show how to interprete the newly defined invariants as certain intersection multiplicities; finally, we characterize which invariants can be interpreted as intersection multiplicities in the above mentioned generalized jet space.
