Flavor hierarchies, flavor anomalies, and Higgs mass from a warped extra dimension

The recent B-meson anomalies are coherently explained at the TeV scale by 4321 gauge models with hierarchical couplings reminiscent of the Standard Model Yukawas. We show that such models arise as the low-energy limit of a complete theory of flavor, based on a warped fifth dimension where each Standard Model family is quasi-localized in a different brane. The Higgs is identified as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson emerging from the same dynamics responsible for 4321 symmetry breaking. This novel construction unifies quarks and leptons in a flavor non-universal manner, provides a natural description of flavor hierarchies, and addresses the electroweak hierarchy problem.

Reading the footprints of the B-meson flavor anomalies

Motivated by the recent LHCb announcement of a $3.1σ$ violation of lepton-flavor universality in the ratio $R_K=Γ(B\to Kμ^+μ^-)/Γ(B\to K e^+ e^-)$, we present an updated, comprehensive analysis of the flavor anomalies seen in both neutral-current ($b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$) and charged-current ($b\to cτ\barν$) decays of $B$ mesons. Our study starts from a model-independent effective field-theory approach and then considers both a simplified model and a UV-complete extension of the Standard Model featuring a vector leptoquark $U_1$ as the main mediator of the anomalies. We show that the new LHCb data corroborate the emerging pattern of a new, predominantly left-handed, semileptonic current-current interaction with a flavor structure respecting a (minimally) broken $U(2)^5$ flavor symmetry. New aspects of our analysis include a combined analysis of the semileptonic operators involving tau leptons, including in particular the important constraint from $B_s$--$\bar B_s$ mixing, a systematic study of the effects of right-handed leptoquark couplings and of deviations from minimal flavor-symmetry breaking, a detailed analysis of various rare $B$-decay modes which would provide smoking-gun signatures of this non-standard framework (LFV decays, di-tau modes, and $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$), and finally an updated analysis of collider bounds on the leptoquark mass and couplings.

SuperTracer: A Calculator of Functional Supertraces for One-Loop EFT Matching

We present SuperTracer, a Mathematica package aimed at facilitating the functional matching procedure for generic UV models. This package automates the most tedious parts of one-loop functional matching computations. Namely, the determination and evaluation of all relevant supertraces, including loop integration and Dirac algebra manipulations. The current version of SuperTracer also contains a limited set of output simplifications. However, a further reduction of the output to a minimal basis using Fierz identities, integration by parts, simplification of Dirac structures, and/or light field redefinitions might still be necessary. The code and example notebooks are publicly available at https://gitlab.com/supertracer/supertracer.

Scalar-involved three-point Green functions and their phenomenology

We analyse within the framework of resonance chiral theory the $\langle SA_μA_ν\rangle$ and $\langle SV_μV_ν\rangle$ three-point Green functions, where $S$, $A_μ $ and $V_μ$ are short for scalar, axial-vector and vector $SU(3)$ hadronic currents. We construct the necessary Lagrangian such that the Green functions fulfill the asymptotic constraints, at large momenta, imposed by QCD at leading order. We study the implications of our results on the spectrum of scalars in the large-$N_C$ limit, and analyse their decays.

Flavor Non-universal Pati-Salam Unification and Neutrino Masses

We analyze the neutrino mass spectrum and discuss the extra-dimensional interpretation of a three-site Pati-Salam model which i) unifies all families of quark and leptons, ii) provides a natural description of the Standard Model Yukawa couplings, iii) could account for the recent $B$-physics anomalies. The key feature of the model is a breaking of the Pati-Salam and electroweak gauge symmetries localized on opposite sites, communicated to the other sites in an attenuated manner via nearest-neighbor interactions. We show that in this context gauge-singlet fermions localized on each site, receiving hierarchical Majorana masses, can allow the implementation of an inverse seesaw mechanism leading to light anarchic neutrino masses consistent with data. The continuum limit of this three-site setup has a natural interpretation in terms of a warped extra dimension with three defects, where the required exponential hierarchies can be achieved from $\mathcal{O}(1)$ differences in the bulk field masses.

Third-family quark-lepton unification with a fundamental composite Higgs

We present a model for third-family quark-lepton unification at the TeV scale featuring a composite Higgs sector. The model is based on a variant of the Pati-Salam model, the so-called 4321 model, consisting of the gauge group $SU(4)\times SU(3)^\prime\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_X$. The spontaneous symmetry breaking to the SM gauge group is triggered dynamically by a QCD-like confining sector. The same strong dynamics also produces the Higgs as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, connecting the energy scales of both sectors. The model predicts a massive $U_1$ vector leptoquark coupled dominantly to the third generation, recently put forward as a possible solution to the $B$-meson anomalies.

DsixTools 2.0: The Effective Field Theory Toolkit

$\tt DsixTools$ is a Mathematica package for the handling of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) and the Low-energy Effective Field Theory (LEFT) with operators up to dimension six, both at the algebraic and numerical level. $\tt DsixTools$ contains a visually accessible and operationally convenient repository of all operators and parameters of the SMEFT and the LEFT. This repository also provides information concerning symmetry categories and number of degrees of freedom, and routines that allow to implement this information on global expressions (such as decay amplitudes and cross-sections). $\tt DsixTools$ also performs weak basis transformations, and implements the full one-loop Renormalization Group Evolution in both EFTs (with SM beta functions up to five loops in QCD), and the full one-loop SMEFT-LEFT matching at the electroweak scale.

Vector Leptoquarks Beyond Tree Level III: Vector-like Fermions and Flavor-Changing Transitions

Extending previous work on this subject, we evaluate the impact of vector-like fermions at next-to-leading order accuracy in models with a massive vector leptoquark embedded in the $SU(4)\times SU(3)^\prime\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_X$ gauge group. Vector-like fermions induce new sources of flavor symmetry breaking, resulting in tree-level flavor-changing couplings for the leptoquark not present in the minimal version of the model. These, in turn, lead to a series of non-vanishing flavor-changing neutral-current amplitudes at the loop level. We systematically analyze these effects in semileptonic, dipole and $ΔF=2$ operators. The impact of these corrections in $b\to sνν$ and $b\to cτν$ observables are discussed in detail. In particular, we show that, in the parameter region providing a good fit to the $B$-physics anomalies, the model predicts a $10\%$ to $50\%$ enhancement of $\mathcal{B}(B\to K^{(*)}νν)$.

Vector Leptoquarks Beyond Tree Level II: $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ Corrections and Radial Modes

We clarify open issues in relating low- and high-energy observables, at next-to-leading order accuracy, in models with a massive leptoquark embedded in a flavor non-universal $SU(4) \times SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ gauge group. Extending previous work on this subject, we present a complete analysis of the $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ corrections to the matching conditions of semileptonic operators at the high scale. These corrections are not negligible, but they do not exceed the 10% level and are subleading compared to the $\mathcal{O}(α_4)$ corrections proportional to the leading leptoquark coupling, which is expected to be much larger than the QCD coupling in the parameter space region of phenomenological interest. We further analyze the impact of radial modes, both at $\mathcal{O}(α_4)$ and at $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ accuracy, highlighting their role in the renormalization of the theory.

Charm Physics Confronts High-$p_T$ Lepton Tails

We present a systematic survey of possible short-distance new-physics effects in (semi)leptonic charged- and neutral-current charmed meson decays. Using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to analyze the most relevant experimental data at low and high energies, we demonstrate a striking complementarity between charm decays and high invariant mass lepton tails at the LHC. Interestingly enough, high-$p_T$ Drell-Yan data offer competitive constraints on most new physics scenarios. Furthermore, the full set of correlated constraints from $K$, $π$ and $τ$ decays imposed by $SU(2)_L$ gauge invariance is considered. The bounds from $D_{(s)}$ decays, high-$p_T$ lepton tails and $SU(2)_L$ relations chart the space of the SMEFT affecting semi(leptonic) charm flavor transitions.

Strong CP problem with low-energy emergent QCD: The 4321 case

We analyze the strong CP problem and the implications for axion physics in the context of $U_1$ vector leptoquark models, recently put forward as an elegant solution to the hints of lepton flavor universality violation in B-meson decays. It is shown that in minimal gauge models containing the $U_1$ as a gauge boson, the Peccei-Quinn solution of the strong CP problem requires the introduction of two axions. Characteristic predictions for the associated axions can be deduced from the model parameter space hinted by B-physics, allowing the new axion sector to account for the dark matter of the Universe. We also provide a specific ultraviolet completion of the axion sector that connects the Peccei-Quinn mechanism to the generation of neutrino masses.

Vector Leptoquarks Beyond Tree Level

Models with massive vector leptoquarks, resulting from an $SU(4)$ gauge symmetry spontaneously broken at the TeV scale, are of great phenomenological interest given the current "anomalies" in semileptonic $B$ decays. We analyze the relations between low- and high-energy observables in such class of models to next-to-leading order accuracy in the $SU(4)$ gauge coupling $g_4$. For large values of $g_4$, motivated by recent $B$-physics data, one-loop corrections are sizeable. The main effect is an enhanced contribution at low-energy, at fixed on-shell couplings. This result has important implications for current and future high-energy searches of vector leptoquark models.

Revisiting the vector leptoquark explanation of the B-physics anomalies

We present a thorough investigation of the vector leptoquark hypothesis for a combined explanation of the $B$-physics anomalies. We analyze this hypothesis from a twofold perspective, taking into account recent results from $B$-physics observables and high-$p_T$ searches. First, using a simplified model, we determine the general conditions for a successful low-energy fit in presence of right-handed leptoquark couplings (neglected in previous analyses). Second, we show how these conditions, in particular a sizable 2-3 family mixing, can be achieved in a motivated ultraviolet completion. Our analysis reinforces the phenomenological success of the vector leptoquark hypothesis in addressing the anomalies, and its compatibility with motivated extensions of the Standard Model based on the idea of flavor non-universal gauge interactions. The implications of right-handed leptoquark couplings for a series of key low-energy observables, namely $B_s \to ττ$ and $τ\toμ$ lepton flavor violating processes, both in $τ$ and in $B$ decays, are discussed in detail. The role of the ultraviolet completion in precisely estimating other low-energy observables, most notably $ΔF=2$ amplitudes, is also addressed.

High-pT Signatures in Vector-Leptoquark Models

We present a detailed analysis of the collider signatures of TeV-scale massive vector bosons motivated by the hints of lepton flavour non-universality observed in $B$-meson decays. We analyse three representations that necessarily appear together in a large class of ultraviolet-complete models: a colour-singlet ($Z'$), a colour-triplet (the $U_1$ leptoquark), and a colour octet ($G'$). Under general assumptions for the interactions of these exotic states with Standard Model fields, including in particular possible right-handed and flavour off-diagonal couplings for the $U_1$, we derive a series of stringent bounds on masses and couplings that constrain a wide range of explicit new-physics models.

Maximal Flavour Violation: a Cabibbo mechanism for leptoquarks

We propose a mechanism that allows for sizeable flavour violation in quark-lepton currents, while suppressing flavour changing neutral currents in quark-quark and lepton-lepton sectors. The mechanism is applied to the recently proposed 4321 renormalizable model, which can accommodate the current experimental anomalies in $B$-meson decays, both in charged and neutral currents, while remaining consistent with all other indirect flavour and electroweak precision measurements and direct searches at high-$p_T$. To support this claim, we present an exhaustive phenomenological survey of this fully calculable UV complete model and highlight the rich complementarity between indirect and direct searches.

Low-energy signatures of the $\mathrm{PS}^3$ model: from $B$-physics anomalies to LFV

The three-site Pati-Salam gauge model provides a consistent description for the hints of lepton-flavor non-universality observed in $B$ decays, connecting the present pattern of "anomalies" to the origin of the Standard Model Yukawa couplings. We present here a detailed analysis of the model predictions for a series of low-energy observables, mainly in $B$ and $τ$ physics. The model is in good agreement with present data and predicts a well-defined pattern of non-standard effects in low-energy observables that could allow us to test it in the near future. Particularly interesting are the predictions of large $τ\toμ$ Lepton Flavor Violating processes, such as $τ\to μγ$, $τ\to 3μ$, $B\to K τμ$, and $B_s\toτμ$. Also $μ\to 3 e$, $μ\to eγ$, and $K_L \to μe$ decays could be not far from the present exclusion bounds, although this conclusion is more model dependent.

A three-site gauge model for flavor hierarchies and flavor anomalies

We present a three-site Pati-Salam gauge model able to explain the Standard Model flavor hierarchies while, at the same time, accommodating the recent experimental hints of lepton-flavor non-universality in $B$ decays. The model is consistent with low- and high-energy bounds, and predicts a rich spectrum of new states at TeV scale that could be probed in the near future by the high-$p_T$ experiments at the LHC.

Gauge-invariant implications of the LHCb measurements on Lepton-Flavour Non-Universality

We study the implications of the recent measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ by the LHCb collaboration. We do that by adopting a model-independent approach based on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), in which the dominant new physics effects are encoded in the coefficients of dimension-six operators respecting the full Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry. After providing simplified expressions for $R_K$ and $R_{K^\ast}$, we determine the implications of the recent LHCb results for these observables on the coefficients of the SMEFT operators at low and high energies. We also take into account all $b\to s \ell\ell$ data, which combined lead to effective New Physics (NP) scenarios with SM pulls in excess of 5~$σ$. Thus the operators discussed in this paper would be the first dimension-six terms in the SM Lagrangian to be detected experimentally. Indirect constraints on these operators are also discussed. The results of this paper transcend the singularity of the present situation, and set a standard for future analyses in $b\to s$ transitions when the NP is assumed to lie above the electroweak scale.
