Measuring the Muon Content of Air Showers with IceTop

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube detector, has been used to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic ray primaries in the range between 1.58 PeV and 1.26 EeV. It can also be used to study the low energy muons in air showers by looking at large distances (> 300m) from the shower axis. We will show the muon lateral distribution function at large lateral distances as measured with IceTop and discuss the implications of this measurement. We also discuss the prospects for low energy muon studies with IceTop.

The Offline Software of the Pierre Auger Observatory: Lessons Learned

The Offline software framework for data analysis of the Pierre Auger Observatory is a set of computational tools developed to cater to the needs of a large and geographically dispersed collaboration established to measure the spectrum, arrival directions, and composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays over a period of 20 years. One of its design goals was to facilitate the collaborative effort by allowing collaborators to progressively contribute small portions of code. The observatory has grown over time and it has undergone improvements and additions that have tested the flexibility of the framework. The framework was originally thought to accommodate a hybrid view of cosmic ray detection, made of a surface and a fluorescence detector. Since then, the framework has been extended to include a radio antenna array and both under-ground and above-ground scintillator arrays. Different tools from the framework have been used by other collaborations, notably NA61/Shine and HAWC. All these experiences accumulated over the years allow us to draw conclusions in terms of the successes and failures of the original design.

Disentangling the Air Shower Components Using Scintillation and Water Cherenkov Detectors

We consider a ground array of scintillation and water Cherenkov detectors with the purpose of determining the muon content of air showers. The different response characteristics of these two types of detectors to the components of the air shower provide a way to infer their relative contributions. We use a detailed simulation to estimate the impact of parameters, such as scintillation detector size, in the determination of the size of the muon component.

Mass Composition Sensitivity of an Array of Water Cherenkov and Scintillation Detectors

We consider a hybrid array composed of scintillation and water Cherenkov detectors designed to measure the cosmic ray primary mass composition at energies of about 1 EeV. We have developed a simulation and reconstruction chain to study the theoretical performance of such an array. In this work we investigate the sensitivity of mass composition observables in relation to the geometry of the array. The detectors are arranged in a triangular grid with fixed 750 m spacing and the configuration of the scintillator detectors is optimized for mass composition sensitivity. We show that the performance for composition determination can be compared favorably to that of Xmax measurements after the difference in duty cycles is considered.

Gluino Air Showers as a Signal of Split Supersymmetry

It has been proposed recently that, within the framework of split Supersymmetry, long lived gluinos generated in astrophysical sources could be detected using the signatures of the air showers they produce, thus providing a lower bound for their lifetime and for the scale of SUSY breaking. We present the longitudinal profile and lateral spread of $G$-hadron induced extensive air showers and consider the possibility of measuring them with a detector with the characteristics of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Magnetic moment of the proton

The magnetic moment of the proton is calculated using a geometric unified theory. The geometry determines a generalized Pauli equation showing anomalous terms due to the triplet proton structure. The theoretical result gives a bare anomalous Lande gyromagnetic g-factor close to the experimental value. The necessary radiative corrections should be included in the actual theoretical dressed value. The first order correction raises the value to 2(2.7796). Similarly we obtain for the neutron gyromagnetic g-factor the value 2(1.9267).
