Safe Exploration of State and Action Spaces in Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we consider the important problem of safe exploration in reinforcement learning. While reinforcement learning is well-suited to domains with complex transition dynamics and high-dimensional state-action spaces, an additional challenge is posed by the need for safe and efficient exploration. Traditional exploration techniques are not particularly useful for solving dangerous tasks, where the trial and error process may lead to the selection of actions whose execution in some states may result in damage to the learning system (or any other system). Consequently, when an agent begins an interaction with a dangerous and high-dimensional state-action space, an important question arises; namely, that of how to avoid (or at least minimize) damage caused by the exploration of the state-action space. We introduce the PI-SRL algorithm which safely improves suboptimal albeit robust behaviors for continuous state and action control tasks and which efficiently learns from the experience gained from the environment. We evaluate the proposed method in four complex tasks: automatic car parking, pole-balancing, helicopter hovering, and business management.

Comparison of two semiclassical expansions for a family of PT-symmetric oscillators

We show that a recently developed semiclassical expansion for the eigenvalues of PT-symmetric oscillators of the form $V(x)=(ix)^{2N+1}+bix$ does not agree with an earlier WKB expression for $V(x)=-(ix)^{2N+1}$ the case $b=0$. The reason is due to the choice of different paths in the complex plane for the calculation of the WKB integrals. We compare the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines that apply to each case for the quintic oscillator and derive a general WKB expression that contains the two earlier ones.

Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the anharmonic oscillator $V(x,y)=x^{2}y^{2}$

We obtain sufficiently accurate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(x,y)=x^{2}y^{2}$ by means of three different methods. Our results strongly suggest that the spectrum of this oscillator is discrete in agreement with early rigorous mathematical proofs and against a recent statement that cast doubts about it.

PT-symmetry broken by point-group symmetry

We discuss a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with complex eigenvalues. It is based on the dimensionless Schrödinger equation for a particle in a square box with the PT-symmetric potential $V(x,y)=iaxy$. Perturbation theory clearly shows that some of the eigenvalues are complex for sufficiently small values of $|a|$. Point-group symmetry proves useful to guess if some of the eigenvalues may already be complex for all values of the coupling constant. We confirm those conclusions by means of an accurate numerical calculation based on the diagonalization method. On the other hand, the Schrödinger equation with the potential $V(x,y)=iaxy^{2}$ exhibits real eigenvalues for sufficiently small values of $|a|$. Point group symmetry suggests that PT-symmetry may be broken in the former case and unbroken in the latter one.

Critical parameters for non-hermitian Hamiltonians

We calculate accurate critical parameters for a class of non-hermitian Hamiltonians by means of the diagonalization method. We study three one-dimensional models and two perturbed rigid rotors with PT symmetry. One of the latter models illustrates the necessity of a more general condition for the appearance of real eigenvalues that we also discuss here.

Rayleigh-Ritz variational method with suitable asymptotic behaviour

We discuss Rayleigh-Ritz variational calculations with nonorthogonal basis sets that exhibit the correct asymptotic behaviour. We construct the suitable basis sets for general one-dimensional models and illustrate the application of the approach on two double-well oscillators proposed recently by other authors. The rate of convergence of the variational method proves to be considerably greater than the one exhibited by the recently developed orthogonal polynomial projection quantization.

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric strings

We study both analytically and numerically the spectrum of inhomogeneous strings with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric density. We discuss an exactly solvable model of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric string which is isospectral to the uniform string; for more general strings, we calculate exactly the sum rules $Z(p) \equiv \sum_{n=1}^\infty 1/E_n^p$, with $p=1,2,\dots$ and find explicit expressions which can be used to obtain bounds on the lowest eigenvalue. A detailed numerical calculation is carried out for two non-solvable models depending on a parameter, obtaining precise estimates of the critical values where pair of real eigenvalues become complex.

Local approximation to the critical parameters of quantum wells

We calculate the critical parameters for some simple quantum wells by means of the Riccati-Padé method. The original approach converges reasonably well for nonzero angular-momentum quantum number $l$ but rather too slowly for the s states. We therefore propose a simple modification that yields remarkably accurate results for the latter case. The rate of convergence of both methods increases with $l$ and decreases with the radial quantum number $n$. We compare RPM results with WKB ones for sufficiently large values of $l$. As illustrative examples we choose the one-dimensional and central-field Gaussian wells as well as the Yukawa potential. The application of perturbation theory by means of the RPM to a class of rational potentials yields interesting and baffling unphysical results.

Irradiation of an Accretion Disc by a Jet: General Properties and Implications for Spin Measurements of Black Holes

X-ray irradiation of the accretion disc leads to strong reflection features, which are then broadened and distorted by relativistic effects. We present a detailed, general relativistic approach to model this irradiation for different geometries of the primary X-ray source. These geometries include the standard point source on the rotational axis as well as more jet-like sources, which are radially elongated and accelerating. Incorporating this code in the relline model for relativistic line emission, the line shape for any configuration can be predicted. We study how different irradiation geometries affect the determination of the spin of the black hole. Broad emission lines are produced only for compact irradiating sources situated close to the black hole. This is the only case where the black hole spin can be unambiguously determined. In all other cases the line shape is narrower, which could either be explained by a low spin or an elongated source. We conclude that for all those cases and independent of the quality of the data, no unique solution for the spin exists and therefore only a lower limit of the spin value can be given.

Modelling and Control of Blowing-Venting Operations in Manned Submarines

Motivated by the study of the potential use of blowing and venting operations of ballast tanks in manned submarines as a complementary or alternative control system for manoeuvring, we first propose a mathematical model for these operations. Then we consider the coupling of blowing and venting with the Feldman, variable mass, coefficient based hydrodynamic model for the equations of motion. The final complete model is composed of a system of twenty-four nonlinear ordinary differential equations. In a second part, we carry out a rigorous mathematical analysis of the model: existence of a solution is proved. As one of the possible applications of this model in naval engineering problems, we consider the problem of roll control in an emergency rising manoeuvre by using only blowing and venting. To this end, we formulate a suitable constrained, nonlinear, optimal control problem where controls are linked to the variable aperture of blowing and venting valves of each of the tanks. Existence of a solution for this problem is also proved. Finally, we address the numerical resolution of the control problem by using a descent algorithm. Numerical experiments seem to indicate that, indeed, an appropriate use of blowing and venting operations may help in the control of this emergency manoeuvre.

On the eigenvalues of some nonhermitian oscillators

We consider a class of one-dimensional nonhermitian oscillators and discuss the relationship between the real eigenvalues of PT-symmetric oscillators and the resonances obtained by different authors. We also show the relationship between the strong-coupling expansions for the eigenvalues of those oscillators. Comparison of the results of the complex rotation and the Riccati-Padé methods reveals that the optimal rotation angle converts the oscillator into either a PT-symmetric or an Hermitian one. In addition to the real positive eigenvalues the PT-symmetric oscillators exhibit real positive resonances under different boundary conditions. They can be calculated by means of the straightforward diagonalization method. The Riccati-Padé method yields not only the resonances of the nonhermitian oscillators but also the eigenvalues of the PT-symmetric ones.

X-ray reflected spectra from accretion disk models. I. Constant density atmospheres

We present new models for illuminated accretion disks, their structure and reprocessed emission. We consider the effects of incident X-rays on the surface of an accretion disk by solving simultaneously the equations of radiative transfer, energy balance and ionization equilibrium over a large range of column densities. We assume plane-parallel geometry and azimuthal symmetry, such that each calculation corresponds to a ring at a given distance from the central object. Our models include recent and complete atomic data for K-shell processes of the iron and oxygen isonuclear sequences. We examine the effect on the spectrum of fluorescent K$α$ line emission and absorption in the emitted spectrum. We also explore the dependence of the spectrum on the strength of the incident X-rays and other input parameters, and discuss the importance of Comptonization on the emitted spectrum.

Experimental characterization of domain walls dynamics in a photorefractive oscillator

We report the experimental characterization of domain walls dynamics in a photorefractive resonator in a degenerate four wave mixing configuration. We show how the non flat profile of the emitted field affects the velocity of domain walls as well as the variations of intensity and phase gradient during their motion. We find a clear correlation between these two last quantities that allows the experimental determination of the chirality that governs the domain walls dynamics.
