Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity in 3D: Thermodynamics of cosmological solutions and black holes with torsion

We construct generalized sets of asymptotic conditions for both three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity and a novel extension that incorporates torsion through a deformation of the Maxwell algebra. These boundary conditions include the most general temporal components of the gauge fields that consistently preserve the corresponding asymptotic Maxwell algebras with identical classical central charges, while allowing for the inclusion of chemical potentials conjugate to the conserved charges. We show that both sets of asymptotic configurations admit nontrivial solutions carrying not only mass and angular momentum but also an additional global spin-2 charge. In the torsionless case, the theory admits locally flat cosmological spacetimes, whereas in the presence of torsion, it generalizes to BTZ-like black hole geometries. For each case, the thermodynamic properties are consistently derived in terms of the gauge fields and the topology of the Euclidean manifold, shown to correspond to a solid torus. Furthermore, we obtain a general expression for the entropy, depending on both the horizon area and its spin-2 analogues, which can be written as a reparametrization-invariant integral of the induced spin-2 fields on the spacelike section of the horizon.

Asymptotic structure of three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity coupled to spin-3 fields

In this work we analyze the asymptotic symmetries of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons (CS) gravity theory for a higher spin extension of the so-called Maxwell algebra. We propose a generalized set of asymptotic boundary conditions for the aforementioned flat gravity theory and we show that the corresponding charge algebra defines a higher-spin extension of the $\mathfrak{max}$-$\mathfrak{bms}_{3}$ algebra, which in turn corresponds the asymptotic symmetries of the Maxwell CS gravity. We also show that the $\mathfrak{hs}_3\mathfrak{max}$-$\mathfrak{bms}_{3}$ algebra can alternatively be obtained as a vanishing cosmological constant limit of three copies of the $\mathcal{W}_3$ algebra, with three independent central charges.

Superrotations at Spacelike Infinity

We propose a consistent set of boundary conditions for gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime at spacelike infinity, which yields an enhancement of the Bondi-Metzner Sachs group with smooth superrotations and new subleading symmetries. These boundary conditions are obtained by allowing fluctuations of the boundary structure which are responsible for divergences in the symplectic form, and a renormalization procedure is required to obtain finite canonical generators. The latter are then made integrable by incorporating boundary terms into the symplectic structure, which naturally derive from a linearized spin-two boundary field on a curved background with positive cosmological constant. Finally, we show that the canonical generators form a nonlinear algebra under the Poisson bracket and verify the consistency of this structure with the Jacobi identity.

Enlarged super-$\mathfrak{bms}_{3}$ algebra and its flat limit

In this paper we analyze the asymptotic symmetries of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity for a supersymmetric extension of the semi-simple enlargement of the Poincar\'e algebra, also known as AdS-Lorentz superalgebra, which is characterized by two fermionic generators. We propose a consistent set of asymptotic boundary conditions for the aforementioned supergravity theory, and we show that the corresponding charge algebra defines a supersymmetric extension of the semi-simple enlargement of the $\mathfrak{bms}_{3}$ algebra, with three independent central charges. This asymptotic symmetry algebra can alternatively be written as the direct sum of three copies of the Virasoro algebra, two of which are augmented by supersymmetry. Interestingly, we show that the flat limit of the obtained asymptotic algebra corresponds to a deformed super-$\mathfrak{bms}_{3}$ algebra, being the charge algebra of the minimal Maxwell supergravity theory in three dimensions.

Singular limits of spacetimes and their isometries

We consider spacetime metrics with a given (but quite generic) dependence on a dimensionful parameter such that in the 0 and infinity limits of that parameter the metric becomes singular. We study the isometry groups of the original spacetime metrics and of the singular metrics that arise in the limits and the corresponding symmetries of the motion of p-branes evolving in them, showing how the Killing vectors and their Lie algebras can be found in general. We illustrate our general results with several examples which include limits of anti-de Sitter spacetime in which the holographic screen is one of the singular metrics and of pp-waves.

Three-dimensional Hypergravity Theories and Semigroup Expansion Method

In this work we present novel and known three-dimensional hypergravity theories which are obtained by applying the powerful semigroup expansion method. We show that the expansion procedure considered here yields a consistent way of coupling different three-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity theories with massless spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields. First, by expanding the $\mathfrak{osp}\left(1|4\right)$ superalgebra with a particular semigroup a generalized hyper-Poincar\'e algebra is found. Interestingly, the hyper-Poincar\'e and hyper-Maxwell algebras appear as subalgebras of this generalized hypersymmetry algebra. Then, we show that the generalized hyper-Poincar\'e CS gravity action can be written as a sum of diverse hypergravity CS Lagrangians. We extend our study to a generalized hyper-AdS gravity theory by considering a different semigroup. Both generalized hyperalgebras are then found to be related through an In\"on\"u-Wigner contraction which can be seen as a generalization of the existing vanishing cosmological constant limit between the hyper-AdS and hyper-Poincar\'e gravity theories.

Asymptotic structure of the gravitational field in five spacetime dimensions: Hamiltonian analysis

We develop the analysis of the asymptotic properties of gravity in higher spacetime dimensions $D$, with a particular emphasis on the case $D=5$. Our approach deals with spatial infinity and is Hamiltonian throughout. It is shown that the asymptotic symmetry algebra BMS$_5$, which is realized non linearly, contains a four-fold family of angle-dependent supertranslations. The structure of this non-linear algebra is investigated and a presentation in which the Poincar\'e subalgebra is linearly realized is constructed. Invariance of the energy is studied. Concluding comments on higher dimensions $D \geq 6$ are also given.

The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group in five spacetime dimensions

We study asymptotically flat spacetimes in five spacetime dimensions by Hamiltonian methods, focusing on spatial infinity and keeping all asymptotically relevant nonlinearities in the transformation laws and in the charge-generators. Precise boundary conditions that lead to a consistent variational principle are given. We show that the algebra of asymptotic symmetries, which had not been uncovered before, is a nonlinear deformation of the semi-direct product of the Lorentz algebra by an abelian algebra involving four independent (and not just one) arbitrary functions of the angles on the $3$-sphere at infinity, with non trivial central charges. The nonlinearities occur in the Poisson brackets of the boost generators with themselves and with the other generators. They would be invisible in a linearized treatment of infinity.

Local supersymmetry and the square roots of Bondi-Metzner-Sachs supertranslations

Super-BMS$_4$ algebras -- also called BMS$_4$ superalgebras -- are graded extensions of the BMS$_4$ algebra. They can be of two different types: they can contain either a finite number or an infinite number of fermionic generators. We show in this letter that, with suitable boundary conditions on the graviton and gravitino fields at spatial infinity, supergravity on asymptotically flat spaces possesses as superalgebra of asymptotic symmetries a (nonlinear) super-BMS$_4$ algebra containing an infinite number of fermionic generators, which we denote SBMS$_4$. These boundary conditions are not only invariant under SBMS$_4$, but also lead to a fully consistent canonical description of the supersymmetries, which have in particular well-defined Hamiltonian generators that close according to the nonlinear SBMS$_4$ algebra. One finds in particular that the graded brackets between the fermionic generators yield all the BMS$_4$ supertranslations, of which they provide therefore "square roots".

Hypersymmetric extensions of Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity in (2+1) dimensions

We present a consistent way of coupling three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity theory with massless spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields. We first introduce the simplest hyper-Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity containing two massless spin-2 fields coupled with a massless Majorana fermion of spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ and whose novel underlying superalgebra is explicitly constructed. Then, we present three alternative hypersymmetric extensions of the Maxwell algebra which are shown to emerge from the In\"on\"u-Wigner contraction procedure of precise combinations of the $\mathfrak{osp}\left(1|4\right)$ and the $\mathfrak{sp}\left(4\right)$ algebras. This allow us to construct distinct types of hyper-Maxwell Chern-Simons theories that extend to include generically interacting non-propagating spin-$4$ fields accompanied by one or two spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields.

Asymptotic structure of the Rarita-Schwinger theory in four spacetime dimensions at spatial infinity

We investigate the asymptotic structure of the free Rarita-Schwinger theory in four spacetime dimensions at spatial infinity in the Hamiltonian formalism. We impose boundary conditions for the spin-3/2 field that are invariant under an infinite-dimensional (abelian) algebra of non-trivial asymptotic fermionic symmetries. The compatibility of this set of boundary conditions with the invariance of the theory under Lorentz boosts requires the introduction of boundary degrees of freedom in the Hamiltonian action, along the lines of electromagnetism. These boundary degrees of freedom modify the symplectic structure by a surface contribution appearing in addition to the standard bulk piece. The Poincar\'e transformations have then well-defined (integrable, finite) canonical generators. Moreover, improper fermionic gauge symmetries, which are also well-defined canonical transformations, are further enlarged and turn out to be parametrized by two independent angle-dependent spinor functions at infinity, which lead to an infinite-dimensional fermionic algebra endowed with a central charge. We extend next the analysis to the supersymmetric spin-$(1,3/2)$ and spin-$(2,3/2)$ multiplets. First, we present the canonical realization of the super-Poincar\'e algebra on the spin-$(1,3/2)$ multiplet, which is shown to be consistently enhanced by the infinite-dimensional abelian algebra of angle-dependent bosonic and fermionic improper gauge symmetries associated with the electromagnetic and the Rarita-Schwinger fields, respectively. A similar analysis of the spin-$(2,3/2)$ multiplet is then carried out to obtain the canonical realization of the super-Poincar\'e algebra, consistently enhanced by the abelian improper bosonic gauge transformations of the spin-$2$ field (BMS supertranslations) and the abelian improper fermionic gauge transformations of the spin-$3/2$ field.

Asymptotic structure of the Pauli-Fierz theory in four spacetime dimensions

The asymptotic structure of the Pauli-Fierz theory at spatial infinity is investigated in four spacetime dimensions. Boundary conditions on the massless spin-$2$ field that are invariant under an infinite-dimensional group of non-trivial ``improper'' gauge symmetries are given. The compatibility of these boundary conditions with invariance of the theory under Lorentz boosts is a subtle issue which is investigated in depth and leads to the identification of the improper gauge symmetries with the pure BMS supertranslations. It is also shown how rigid Poincar\'e transformations and improper gauge symmetries of the free Pauli-Fierz theory merge into the full BMS group as one switches on the gravitational coupling. Contrary to the massless spin-$1$ case, where invariance under boosts is implemented differently and where important differences between the free and the interacting cases have been exhibited recently, the free Pauli-Fierz theory and general relativity show very similar behaviours at spatial infinity.

Hypergravity in five dimensions

We show that a spin-$5/2$ field can be consistently coupled to gravitation without cosmological constant in five-dimensional spacetimes. The fermionic gauge "hypersymmetry" requires the presence of a finite number of additional fields, including a couple of $U(1)$ fields, a spinorial two-form, the dual of the graviton (of mixed $(2,1)$ Young symmetry) and a spin-$3$ field. The gravitational sector of the action is described by the purely quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term, so that the field equations for the metric are of second order. The local gauge symmetries of the full action principle close without the need of auxiliary fields. The field content corresponds to the components of a connection for an extension of the "hyper-Poincar\'e" algebra, which apart from the Poincar\'e and spin-$3/2$ generators, includes a generator of spin $2$ and a $U(1)$ central extension. It is also shown that this algebra admits an invariant trilinear form, which allows to formulate hypergravity as a gauge theory described by a Chern-Simons action in five dimensions.

Limits of three-dimensional gravity and metric kinematical Lie algebras in any dimension

We extend a recent classification of three-dimensional spatially isotropic homogeneous spacetimes to Chern--Simons theories as three-dimensional gravity theories on these spacetimes. By this we find gravitational theories for all carrollian, galilean, and aristotelian counterparts of the lorentzian theories. In order to define a nondegenerate bilinear form for each of the theories, we introduce (not necessarily central) extensions of the original kinematical algebras. Using the structure of so-called double extensions, this can be done systematically. For homogeneous spaces that arise as a limit of (anti-)de Sitter spacetime, we show that it is possible to take the limit on the level of the action, after an appropriate extension. We extend our systematic construction of nondegenerate bilinear forms also to all higher-dimensional kinematical algebras.

Three-dimensional conformal geometry and prepotentials for four-dimensional fermionic higher-spin fields

We introduce prepotentials for fermionic higher-spin gauge fields in four spacetime dimensions, generalizing earlier work on bosonic fields. To that end, we first develop tools for handling conformal fermionic higher-spin gauge fields in three dimensions. This is necessary because the prepotentials turn out to be three-dimensional fields that enjoy both "higher-spin diffeomorphism" and "higher-spin Weyl" gauge symmetries. We discuss a number of the key properties of the relevant Cotton tensors. The reformulation of the equations of motion as "twisted self-duality conditions" is then exhibited. We show next how the Hamiltonian constraints can be explicitly solved in terms of appropriate prepotentials and show that the action takes then the same remarkable form for all spins.

Revisiting the asymptotic dynamics of General Relativity on AdS$_3$

The dual dynamics of Einstein gravity on AdS$_3$ supplemented with boundary conditions of KdV-type is identified. It corresponds to a two-dimensional field theory at the boundary, described by a novel action principle whose field equations are given by two copies of the "potential modified KdV equation". The asymptotic symmetries then transmute into the global Noether symmetries of the dual action, giving rise to an infinite set of commuting conserved charges, implying the integrability of the system. Noteworthy, the theory at the boundary is non-relativistic and possesses anisotropic scaling of Lifshitz type.

The Action of the (Free) $\mathcal{N} = (3,1)$ Theory in Six Spacetime Dimensions

The action of the free $\mathcal{N} = (3,1)$ theory in six spacetime dimensions is explicitly constructed. The variables of the variational principle are prepotentials adapted to the self-duality conditions on the fields. The $(3,1)$ supersymmetry variations are given and the invariance of the action is verified. The action is first-order in time derivatives. It is also Poincar\'e invariant but not manifestly so, just like the Hamiltonian action of more familiar relativistic field theories.
