A data-driven and model-agnostic approach to solving combinatorial assignment problems in searches for new physics

We present a novel approach to solving combinatorial assignment problems in particle physics without the need to introduce prior knowledge or assumptions about the particles' decay. The correct assignment of decay products to parent particles is achieved in a model-agnostic fashion by introducing a novel neural network architecture, Passwd-ABC, which combines a custom layer based on attention mechanisms and dual autoencoders. We demonstrate how the network, trained purely on background events in an unsupervised setting, is capable of reconstructing correctly hypothetical new particles regardless of their mass, decay multiplicity and substructure, and produces simultaneously an anomaly score that can be used to efficiently suppress the background. This model allows to extend the suite of searches for localized excesses to include non-resonant particle pair production where the reconstruction of the two resonant masses is thwarted by combinatorics.

The ABC of RPV: Classification of R-Parity Violating Signatures at the LHC for Small Couplings

We perform a classification of all potential supersymmetric $R$-parity violating signatures at the LHC to address the question: are existing bounds on supersymmetric models robust, or are there still signatures not covered by existing searches, allowing LHC-scale supersymmetry to be hiding? We analyze all possible scenarios with one dominant RPV trilinear coupling at a time, allowing for arbitrary LSPs and mass spectra. We consider direct production of the LSP, as well as production via gauge-cascades, and find 6 different experimental signatures for the $LL\bar E$-case, 6 for the $LQ\bar D$-case, and 5 for the $\bar U\bar D\bar D$-case; together these provide complete coverage of the RPV-MSSM landscape. This set of signatures is confronted with the existing searches by \texttt{ATLAS} and \texttt{CMS}. We find all signatures have been covered at the LHC, although not at the sensitivity level needed to probe the direct production of all LSP types. For the case of a dominant $LL\bar E$-operator, we use \texttt{CheckMATE} to quantify the current lower bounds on the supersymmetric masses and find the limits to be comparable to or better than the $R$-parity conserving case. Our treatment can be easily extended to scenarios with more than one non-zero RPV coupling.

Review of opportunities for new long-lived particle triggers in Run 3 of the Large Hadron Collider

Long-lived particles (LLPs) are highly motivated signals of physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) with great discovery potential and unique experimental challenges. The LLP search programme made great advances during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), but many important regions of signal space remain unexplored. Dedicated triggers are crucial to improve the potential of LLP searches, and their development and expansion is necessary for the full exploitation of the new data. The public discussion of triggers has therefore been a relevant theme in the recent LLP literature, in the meetings of the LLP@LHC Community workshop and in the respective experiments. This paper documents the ideas collected during talks and discussions at these Workshops, benefiting as well from the ideas under development by the trigger community within the experimental collaborations. We summarise the theoretical motivations of various LLP scenarios leading to highly elusive signals, reviewing concrete ideas for triggers that could greatly extend the reach of the LHC experiments. We thus expect this document to encourage further thinking for both the phenomenological and experimental communities, as a stepping stone to further develop the LLP@LHC physics programme.
