Electromagnetic Generalized Quasi-topological gravities in $(2 + 1)$ dimensions

The construction of Quasi-topological gravities in three-dimensions requires coupling a scalar field to the metric. As shown in arXiv:2104.10172, the resulting "Electromagnetic" Quasi-topological (EQT) theories admit charged black hole solutions characterized by a single-function for the metric, $-g_{tt}=g^{-1}_{rr}\equiv f(r)$, and a simple azimuthal form for the scalar. Such black holes, whose metric can be determined fully analytically, generalize the BTZ solution in various ways, including singularity-free black holes without any fine-tuning of couplings or parameters. In this paper we extend the family of EQT theories to general curvature orders. We show that, beyond linear order, $f(r)$ satisfies a second-order differential equation rather than an algebraic one, making the corresponding theories belong to the Electromagnetic Generalized Quasi-topological (EGQT) class. We prove that at each curvature order, the most general EGQT density is given by a single term which contributes nontrivially to the equation of $f(r)$ plus densities which do not contribute at all to such equation. The proof relies on the counting of the exact number of independent order-$n$ densities of the form $\mathcal{L}(R_{ab},\partial_a ϕ)$, which we carry out. We study some general aspects of the new families of EGQT black-hole solutions, including their thermodynamic properties and the fulfillment of the first law, and explicitly construct a few of them numerically.

Higher-Curvature Gravity and Entanglement Entropy

In this thesis, we focus on higher-curvature extensions of Einstein gravity as toy models to probe universal properties of conformal field theory (CFT) using the gauge/gravity duality. In this context, we are particularly interested in generalized quasi-topological gravities, i.e., theories whose equations of motion for statically spherically symmetric solutions are of second order at most. Here, we characterize the number of these theories existing at a given curvature order and dimensions. Moreover, we show that any effective higher-curvature theory is connected, via field redefinitions to some generalized quasi-topological gravity. The situation is special for three spacetime dimensions, as theories of this type have trivial equations of motion. However, when matter fields are added into the picture, the equations of motion become non-trivial, describing, among other solutions, multiparametric generalizations of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. From the CFT side, entanglement entropy arises as a prominent quantity that encodes important information about the field theory, such as the type A and type B trace anomalies in even dimensions and the sphere free energy of the theory in odd dimensions when considering spherical entangling regions. As entanglement entropy also includes divergences, we employ the Kounterterms scheme to extract the physically relevant quantities. In the case of three-dimensional CFTs dual to Einstein gravity, we show that the finite part is isolated and can be written in terms of the Willmore energy, providing an upper bound based on its properties. We extend this remarkable result to arbitrary CFTs under consideration. Besides, we show the validity of the Kounterterms scheme for general quadratic curvature gravity, extracting the type A, type B anomalies of the theory in even dimensions and the sphere free energy in odd ones.

Generalized quasi-topological gravities: the whole shebang

Generalized quasi-topological gravities (GQTGs) are higher-curvature extensions of Einstein gravity in $D$-dimensions. Their defining properties include possessing second-order linearized equations of motion around maximally symmetric backgrounds as well as non-hairy generalizations of Schwarzschild's black hole characterized by a single function, $f(r)\equiv - g_{tt}=g_{rr}^{-1}$, which satisfies a second-order differential equation. In arXiv:1909.07983 GQTGs were shown to exist at all orders in curvature and for general $D$. In this paper we prove that, in fact, $n-1$ inequivalent classes of order-$n$ GQTGs exist for $D\geq 5$. Amongst these, we show that one -- and only one -- type of densities is of the Quasi-topological kind, namely, such that the equation for $f(r)$ is algebraic. Our arguments do not work for $D=4$, in which case there seems to be a single unique GQT density at each order which is not of the Quasi-topological kind. We compute the thermodynamic charges of the most general $D$-dimensional order-$n$ GQTG, verify that they satisfy the first law and provide evidence that they can be entirely written in terms of the embedding function which determines the maximally symmetric vacua of the theory.

Aspects of three-dimensional higher-curvature gravities

We present new results involving general higher-curvature gravities in three dimensions. The most general Lagrangian can be written as a function of the Ricci scalar $R$, $\mathcal{S}_2\equiv \tilde R_{a}^b \tilde R_b^a$ and $\mathcal{S}_3\equiv \tilde R_a^b \tilde R_b^c \tilde R_c^a$ where $\tilde R_{ab}$ is the traceless part of the Ricci tensor. First, we provide a formula for the exact number of independent order-$n$ densities, $\#(n)$. This satisfies the identity $\#(n-6)=\#(n)-n$. Then, we show that, linearized around a general Einstein solution, a generic order-$n\geq 2$ density can be written as a linear combination of $R^n$, which does not propagate the generic massive graviton, plus a density which does not propagate the generic scalar mode, $R^n-12n(n-1)R^{n-2}\mathcal{S}_2$, plus $\#(n)-2$ densities which contribute trivially to the linearized equations. Next, we obtain an analytic formula for the quasinormal frequencies of the BTZ black hole for a general theory. Then, we provide a recursive formula as well as a general closed expression for order-$n$ densities which non-trivially satisfy an holographic c-theorem, clarify their relation with Born-Infeld gravities and prove that they never propagate the scalar mode. We show that at each order there exist $\#(n-6)$ densities which satisfy the holographic c-theorem trivially and that all of them are proportional to a single sextic density $Ω_{(6)}\equiv 6 \mathcal{S}_3^2-\mathcal{S}_2^3$. We prove that there are also $\#(n-6)$ order-$n$ Generalized Quasi-topological densities in three dimensions, all of which are "trivial" in the sense of making no contribution to the metric function equation. The set of such densities turns out to coincide exactly with the one of theories trivially satisfying the holographic c-theorem. We comment on the relation of $Ω_{(6)}$ to the Segre classification of three-dimensional metrics.

Disks globally maximize the entanglement entropy in $2+1$ dimensions

The entanglement entropy corresponding to a smooth region in general three-dimensional CFTs contains a constant universal term, $-F \subset S_{\text{EE}}$. For a disk region, $F|_{\rm disk}\equiv F_0$ coincides with the free energy on $\mathbb{S}^3$ and provides an RG-monotone for general theories. As opposed to the analogous quantity in four dimensions, the value of $F$ generally depends in a complicated (and non-local) way on the geometry of the region and the theory under consideration. For small geometric deformations of the disk in general CFTs as well as for arbitrary regions in holographic theories, it has been argued that $F$ is precisely minimized by disks. Here, we argue that $F$ is globally minimized by disks with respect to arbitrary regions and for general theories. The proof makes use of the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy and the geometric fact that one can always place an osculating circle within a given smooth entangling region. For topologically non-trivial entangling regions with $n_B$ boundaries, the general bound can be improved to $F \geq n_B F_0$. In addition, we provide accurate approximations to $F$ valid for general CFTs in the case of elliptic regions for arbitrary values of the eccentricity which we check against lattice calculations for free fields. We also evaluate $F$ numerically for more general shapes in the so-called "Extensive Mutual Information model", verifying the general bound.

Renormalized holographic entanglement entropy for Quadratic Curvature Gravity

We derive a covariant expression for the renormalized holographic entanglement entropy for Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) dual to Quadratic Curvature Gravity in arbitrary dimensions. This expression is written as the sum of the bare entanglement entropy functional obtained using standard conical defect techniques, and a counterterm defined at the boundary of the extremal surface of the functional. The latter corresponds to the cod-2 self-replicating part of the extrinsic counterterms when evaluated on the replica orbifold. This renormalization method isolates the universal terms of the holographic entanglement entropy functional. We use it to compute the standard C-function candidate for CFTs of arbitrary dimension, and the type-B anomaly coefficient c for 4-dimensional CFTs.

Regular black holes in three dimensions

We find a plethora of new analytic black holes and globally regular horizonless spacetimes in three dimensions. The solutions involve a single real scalar field $ϕ$ which always admits a magnetic-like expression proportional to the angular coordinate. The new metrics, which satisfy $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and represent continuous generalizations of the BTZ one, solve the equations of Einstein gravity corrected by a new family of densities (controlled by unconstrained couplings) constructed from positive powers of $(\partial ϕ)^2$ and certain linear combinations of $R^{ab} \partial_a ϕ\partial_b ϕ$ and $(\partial ϕ)^2 R$. Some of the solutions obtained describe black holes with one or several horizons. A set of them possesses curvature singularities, while others have conical or BTZ-like ones. Interestingly, in some cases the black holes have no singularity at all, being completely regular. Some of the latter are achieved without any kind of fine tuning or constraint between the action parameters and/or the physical charges of the solution. An additional class of solutions describes globally regular and horizonless geometries.

Shape dependence of renormalized holographic entanglement entropy

We study the holographic entanglement entropy of deformed entangling regions in three-dimensional CFTs dual to Einstein-AdS gravity, using a renormalization scheme based on the addition of extrinsic counterterms. In this prescription, when even-dimensional manifolds are considered, the universal contribution to the entanglement entropy is identified as the renormalized volume of the Ryu-Takayanagi hypersurface, which is written as the sum of a topological and a curvature term. It is shown that the change in the renormalized entanglement entropy due to the deformation of the entangling surface is encoded purely in the curvature contribution. In turn, as the topological part is given by the Euler characteristic of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface, it remains shape independent. Exploiting the covariant character of the extrinsic counterterms, we apply the renormalization scheme for the case of deformed entangling regions in AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$, recovering the results found in the literature. Finally, we provide a derivation of the relation between renormalized entanglement entropy and Willmore energy. The presence of a lower bound of the latter makes manifest the relation between the AdS curvature of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface and the strong subadditivity property.

All higher-curvature gravities as Generalized quasi-topological gravities

Generalized quasi-topological gravities (GQTGs) are higher-curvature extensions of Einstein gravity characterized by the existence of non-hairy generalizations of the Schwarzschild black hole which satisfy $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$, as well as for having second-order linearized equations around maximally symmetric backgrounds. In this paper we provide strong evidence that any gravitational effective action involving higher-curvature corrections is equivalent, via metric redefinitions, to some GQTG. In the case of theories involving invariants constructed from contractions of the Riemann tensor and the metric, we show this claim to be true as long as (at least) one non-trivial GQTG invariant exists at each order in curvature ---and extremely conclusive evidence suggests this is the case in general dimensions. When covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor are included, the evidence provided is not as definitive, but we still prove the claim explicitly for all theories including up to eight derivatives of the metric as well as for terms involving arbitrary contractions of two covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor and any number of Riemann tensors. Our results suggest that the physics of generic higher-curvature gravity black holes is captured by their GQTG counterparts, dramatically easier to characterize and universal. As an example, we map the gravity sector of the Type-IIB string theory effective action in AdS$_5$ at order $\mathcal{O}({α^{\prime}}^3)$ to a GQTG and show that the thermodynamic properties of black holes in both frames match.

Multivariate Arrival Times with Recurrent Neural Networks for Personalized Demand Forecasting

Access to a large variety of data across a massive population has made it possible to predict customer purchase patterns and responses to marketing campaigns. In particular, accurate demand forecasts for popular products with frequent repeat purchases are essential since these products are one of the main drivers of profits. However, buyer purchase patterns are extremely diverse and sparse on a per-product level due to population heterogeneity as well as dependence in purchase patterns across product categories. Traditional methods in survival analysis have proven effective in dealing with censored data by assuming parametric distributions on inter-arrival times. Distributional parameters are then fitted, typically in a regression framework. On the other hand, neural-network based models take a non-parametric approach to learn relations from a larger functional class. However, the lack of distributional assumptions make it difficult to model partially observed data. In this paper, we model directly the inter-arrival times as well as the partially observed information at each time step in a survival-based approach using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) to model purchase times jointly over several products. Instead of predicting a point estimate for inter-arrival times, the RNN outputs parameters that define a distributional estimate. The loss function is the negative log-likelihood of these parameters given partially observed data. This approach allows one to leverage both fully observed data as well as partial information. By externalizing the censoring problem through a log-likelihood loss function, we show that substantial improvements over state-of-the-art machine learning methods can be achieved. We present experimental results based on two open datasets as well as a study on a real dataset from a large retailer.

Merge Non-Dominated Sorting Algorithm for Many-Objective Optimization

Many Pareto-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithms require to rank the solutions of the population in each iteration according to the dominance principle, what can become a costly operation particularly in the case of dealing with many-objective optimization problems. In this paper, we present a new efficient algorithm for computing the non-dominated sorting procedure, called Merge Non-Dominated Sorting (MNDS), which has a best computational complexity of $Θ(NlogN)$ and a worst computational complexity of $Θ(MN^2)$. Our approach is based on the computation of the dominance set of each solution by taking advantage of the characteristics of the merge sort algorithm. We compare the MNDS against four well-known techniques that can be considered as the state-of-the-art. The results indicate that the MNDS algorithm outperforms the other techniques in terms of number of comparisons as well as the total running time.

Iterative differential Galois theory: a model theoretic approach

This paper introduces a natural extension of Kolchin's differential Galois theory to positive characteristic iterative differential fields, generalizing to the non-linear case the iterative Picard-Vessiot theory recently developed by Matzat and van der Put. We use the methods and framework provided by the model theory of iterative differential fields. We offer a definition of strongly normal extension of iterative differential fields, and then prove that these extensions have good Galois theory and that a G-primitive element theorem holds. In addition, making use of the basic theory of arc spaces of algebraic groups, we define iterative logarithmic equations, finally proving that our strongly normal extensions are Galois extensions for these equations.
