States of Low Energy in bouncing inflationary scenarios in Loop Quantum Cosmology

In generic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetimes, States of Low Energy (SLEs) are defined to minimize the regularized energy density smeared along the time-like curve of an isotropic observer, which is specified via a smearing function. For every smearing function, SLEs are unique (up to a phase) and are shown to be exact Hadamard states. In this work, we investigate the viability of SLEs as the vacuum for cosmological perturbations in hybrid Loop Quantum Cosmology, motivated by the fact that SLEs have been shown to provide suitable vacua in models where a period of kinetic dominance precedes inflation. We find that there are two classes of smearing functions that can be seen as natural choices within this context, for which the corresponding SLEs and the resulting power spectra at the end of inflation are quite insensitive to the exact shape and support of the smearing function. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis of the tensor-to-scalar ratio and of the spectral index indicates as good an agreement with observations as that of standard cosmology.

Non-oscillatory power spectrum from States of Low Energy in kinetically dominated early universes

Recently, States of Low Energy (SLEs) have been proposed as viable vacuum states of primordial perturbations within Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). In this work we investigate the effect of the high curvature region of LQC on the definition of SLEs. Shifting the support of the test function that defines them away from this regime results in primordial power spectra of perturbations closer to those of the so-called Non-oscillatory (NO) vacuum, which is another viable choice of initial conditions previously introduced in the LQC context. Furthermore, through a comparison with the Hadamard-like SLEs, we prove that the NO vacuum is of Hadamard type as well.

Primordial scalar power spectrum from the hybrid approach in loop cosmologies

We compare the primordial scalar power spectra in the loop cosmological models using the effective dynamics of the hybrid approach to cosmological perturbations in which the background is loop quantized but the perturbations are Fock quantized. The three loop cosmological models under consideration are the standard LQC, the modified LQC-I (mLQC-I) and the modified LQC-II (mLQC-II) in the spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe with a Starobinsky potential. These models arise from different regularizations of the classical Hamiltonian constraint in the symmetry reduced spacetimes and aim to capture certain features of quantization in loop quantum gravity. When applying the techniques in the hybrid approach to mLQC-I/II, we find the effective Mukhanov-Sasaki equations take the same form as in LQC. The difference among the three models is encoded in the unique expressions of the effective masses in each model. We find that the relative difference in the amplitude of power spectrum between LQC and mLQC-II is approximately $50\%$ in the infrared and the oscillatory regimes, whereas this difference can be as large as $100\%$ between mLQC-I and LQC/mLQC-II. Interestingly, in the infrared and the oscillatory regimes of mLQC-I, we obtain a suppressed power spectrum from the hybrid approach which is far below the Planck scale. This result is in a striking contrast to the one obtained from dressed metric approach to perturbations where the corresponding amplitude in this regime is extremely large. Our analysis shows that while the phenomenological predictions are in agreement between two approaches for LQC and mLQC-II, for mLQC-I the differences between dressed and hybrid approaches can be quite significant. Our result provides the first robust evidence of difference in predictions between dressed and hybrid approaches due to respective underlying constructions.

Observational consequences of Bianchi I spacetimes in loop quantum cosmology

Anisotropies generically dominate the earliest stages of expansion of a homogeneous universe. They are particularly relevant in bouncing models, since shears grow in the contracting phase of the cosmos, making the isotropic situation unstable. This paper extends the study of cosmological perturbations in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) to anisotropic Bianchi I models that contain a bounce followed by a phase of slow-roll inflation. We show that, although the shear tensor dilutes and the universe isotropizes soon after the bounce, cosmic perturbations retain memory of this short anisotropic phase. We develop the formalism needed to describe perturbations in anisotropic, effective LQC, and apply it to make predictions for the cosmic microwave background (CMB), while respecting current observational constraints. We show that the anisotropic bounce induces: (i) anisotropic features in all angular correlation functions in the CMB, and in particular a quadrupolar modulation that can account for a similar feature observed in the temperature map by the Planck satellite, and (ii) quantum entanglement between scalar and tensor modes, that manifests itself in temperature-polarization (T-B and E-B) correlations in the CMB.

Predictions for the CMB from an anisotropic quantum bounce

We introduce an extension of the standard inflationary paradigm on which the big bang singularity is replaced by an anisotropic bounce. Unlike in the big bang model, cosmological perturbations find an adiabatic regime in the past. We show that this scenario accounts for the observed quadrupolar modulation in the temperature anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and we make predictions for the remaining angular correlation functions E-E, B-B and T-E, together with non-zero temperature-polarization correlations T-B and E-B, that can be used to test our ideas. We base our calculations on the bounce predicted by loop quantum cosmology, but our techniques and conclusions apply to other bouncing models as well.

Hamiltonian theory of classical and quantum gauge invariant perturbations in Bianchi I spacetimes

We derive a Hamiltonian formulation of the theory of gauge invariant, linear perturbations in anisotropic Bianchi I spacetimes, and describe how to quantize this system. The matter content is assumed to be a minimally coupled scalar field with potential $V(ϕ)$. We show that a Bianchi I spacetime generically induces both anisotropies and quantum entanglement on cosmological perturbations, and provide the tools to compute the details of these features. We then apply this formalism to a scenario in which the inflationary era is preceded by an anisotropic Bianchi I phase, and discuss the potential imprints in observable quantities. The formalism developed here paves the road to a simultaneous canonical quantization of both the homogeneous degrees of freedom and the perturbations, a task that we develop in a companion paper.

Properties of a recent quantum extension of the Kruskal geometry

Recently it was shown that, in an effective description motivated by loop quantum gravity, singularities of the Kruskal space-time are naturally resolved [1,2]. In this note we explore a few properties of this quantum corrected effective metric. In particular, we (i) calculate the Hawking temperature associated with the horizon of the effective geometry and show that the quantum correction to the temperature is completely negligible for macroscopic black holes, just as one would hope; (ii) discuss the subtleties associated with the asymptotic properties of the space-time metric, and show that the metric is asymptotically flat in a precise sense; (iii) analyze the asymptotic fall-off of curvature; and, (iv) show that the ADM energy is well-defined (and agrees with that determined by the horizon area), even though the curvature falls off less rapidly than in the standard asymptotically flat context.

Classical axisymmetric gravity in real Ashtekar variables

We formulate axisymmetric general relativity in terms of real Ashtekar--Barbero variables. We study the constraints and equations of motion and show how the Kerr, Schwarzschild and Minkowski solutions arise. We also discuss boundary conditions. This opens the possibility of a midisuperspace quantization using loop quantum gravity techniques for spacetimes with axial symmetry and time dependence.

Quantum Extension of the Kruskal Space-time

A new description of macroscopic Kruskal black holes that incorporates the quantum geometry corrections of loop quantum gravity is presented. It encompasses both the `interior' region that contains classical singularities and the `exterior' asymptotic region. Singularities are naturally resolved by the quantum geometry effects of loop quantum gravity. The resulting quantum extension of space-time has the following features: (i) It admits an infinite number of trapped, anti-trapped and asymptotic regions; (ii) All curvature scalars have uniform (i.e., mass independent) upper bounds; (iii) In the large mass limit, all asymptotic regions of the extension have the same ADM mass; (iv) In the low curvature region (e.g., near horizons) quantum effects are negligible, as one would physically expect; and (v) Final results are insensitive to the fiducial structures that have to be introduced to construct the classical phase space description (as they must be). Previous effective theories [1-10] shared some but not all of these features. We compare and contrast our results with those of these effective theories and also with expectations based on the AdS/CFT conjecture [11]. We conclude with a discussion of limitations of our framework, especially for the analysis of evaporating black holes.

Power spectrum of primordial perturbations for an emergent universe in quantum reduced loop gravity

We study the dynamics and predictions of a new emergent-universe model recently derived within Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity and based on the so-called statistical regularization scheme. These effective geometries show a dynamical transition from a stationary spacetime, with nearly constant scale factor at very early times, to a late-time semiclassical phase well approximated by a classical Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We show that this is always the case when the matter content is a minimally coupled scalar field subject to a quadratic potential, including the massless case. Besides, a finite period of (nearly) exponential expansion in the semiclassical region can take place. Hence, we incorporate cosmological scalar and tensor perturbations, with a well-defined dynamics, and compute their power spectra at the end of inflation. We show that they are nearly scale invariant up to some scale where scale invariance is broken. Besides, they show qualitative differences with respect to the bouncing scenario of Loop Quantum Cosmology at scales where the scale invariance is broken. Nevertheless, the tensor-to-scalar ratio remains approximately constant even for modes well affected by the background evolution.

Quantum Transfiguration of Kruskal Black Holes

We present a new effective description of macroscopic Kruskal black holes that incorporates corrections due to quantum geometry effects of loop quantum gravity. It encompasses both the `interior' region that contains classical singularities and the `exterior' asymptotic region. Singularities are naturally resolved by the quantum geometry effects of loop quantum gravity, and the resulting quantum extension of the full Kruskal space-time is free of all the known limitations of previous investigations [1-11] of the Schwarzschild interior. We compare and contrast our results with these investigations and also with the expectations based on the AdS/CFT duality [12].

From black holes to white holes: a quantum gravitational, symmetric bounce

Recently a consistent non-perturbative quantization of the Schwarzschild interior resulting in a bounce from black hole to white hole geometry has been obtained by loop quantizing the Kantowski-Sachs vacuum spacetime. As in other spacetimes where the singularity is dominated by the Weyl part of the spacetime curvature, the structure of the singularity is highly anisotropic in the Kantowski-Sachs vacuum spacetime. As a result the bounce turns out to be in general asymmetric creating a large mass difference between the parent black hole and the child white hole. In this manuscript, we investigate under what circumstances a symmetric bounce scenario can be constructed in the above quantization. Using the setting of Dirac observables and geometric clocks we obtain a symmetric bounce condition which can be satisfied by a slight modification in the construction of loops over which holonomies are considered in the quantization procedure. These modifications can be viewed as quantization ambiguities, and are demonstrated in three different flavors which all lead to a non-singular black to white hole transition with identical masses. Our results show that quantization ambiguities can mitigate or even qualitatively change some key features of physics of singularity resolution. Further, these results are potentially helpful in motivating and constructing symmetric black to white hole transition scenarios.

Local rotational symmetry Gowdy model in Loop Quantum Gravity

We provide a complete quantization for the Gowdy model with local rotational symmetry in vacuum. We start with a redefinition of the classical constraint algebra such that the Hamiltonian constraint has a vanishing Poisson bracket with itself. We apply a canonical quantization within loop quantum gravity and an improved dynamics scheme. We construct the exact solutions to the constraints and the physical Hilbert space, together with the physical observables. The quantization provides a physical picture without singularities. Besides, a genuine discretization of the spatial geometry emerges by means of a new quantum observable without classical analogue.

Loop quantization of the Gowdy model with local rotational symmetry

We provide a full quantization of the vacuum Gowdy model with local rotational symmetry. We consider a redefinition of the constraints where the Hamiltonian Poisson-commutes with itself. We then apply the canonical quantization program of loop quantum gravity within an improved dynamics scheme. We identify the exact solutions of the constraints and the physical observables, and we construct the physical Hilbert space. It is remarkable that quantum spacetimes are free of singularities. New quantum observables naturally arising in the treatment partially codify the discretization of the geometry. The preliminary analysis of the asymptotic future/past of the evolution indicates that the existing Abelianization technique needs further refinement.

Hybrid loop quantum cosmology and predictions for the cosmic microwave background

We investigate the consequences of the hybrid quantization approach for primordial perturbations in loop quantum cosmology, obtaining predictions for the cosmic microwave background and comparing them with data collected by the Planck mission. In this work, we complete previous studies about the scalar perturbations and incorporate tensor modes. We compute their power spectrum for a variety of vacuum states. We then analyze the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the consistency relation between this quantity and the spectral index of the tensor power spectrum. We also compute the temperature-temperature, electric-electric, temperature-electric, and magnetic-magnetic correlation functions. Finally, we discuss the effects of the quantum geometry in these correlation functions and confront them with observations.

Uniqueness of the Fock quantization of scalar fields in a Bianchi I cosmology with unitary dynamics

The Fock quantization of free scalar fields is subject to an infinite ambiguity when it comes to choosing a set of annihilation and creation operators, choice that is equivalent to the determination of a vacuum state. In highly symmetric situations, this ambiguity can be removed by asking vacuum invariance under the symmetries of the system. Similarly, in stationary backgrounds, one can demand time-translation invariance plus positivity of the energy. However, in more general situations, additional criteria are needed. For the case of free (test) fields minimally coupled to a homogeneous and isotropic cosmology, it has been proven that the ambiguity is resolved by introducing the criterion of unitary implementability of the quantum dynamics, as an endomorphism in Fock space. This condition determines a specific separation of the time dependence of the field, so that this splits into a very precise background dependence and a genuine quantum evolution. Furthermore, together with the condition of vacuum invariance under the spatial Killing symmetries, unitarity of the dynamics selects a unique Fock representation for the canonical commutation relations, up to unitary equivalence. In this work, we generalize these results to anisotropic spacetimes with shear, which are therefore not conformally symmetric, by considering the case of a free scalar field in a Bianchi I cosmology.

Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger vacuum in loop quantum gravity and singularity resolution

We study here a complete quantization of a Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) vacuum model following loop quantum gravity techniques. Concretely, we adopt a formulation of the model in terms of a set of new variables that resemble the ones commonly employed in spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. The classical theory consists of two pairs of canonical variables plus a scalar and diffeomorphism (first class) constraints. We consider a suitable redefinition of the Hamiltonian constraint such that the new constraint algebra (with structure constants) is well adapted to the Dirac quantization approach. For it, we adopt a polymeric representation for both the geometry and the dilaton field. On the one hand, we find a suitable invariant domain of the scalar constraint operator, and we construct explicitly its solution space. There, the eigenvalues of the dilaton and the metric operators cannot vanish locally, allowing us to conclude that singular geometries are ruled out in the quantum theory. On the other hand, the physical Hilbert space is constructed out of them, after group averaging the previous states with the diffeomorphism constraint. In turn, we identify the standard observable corresponding to the mass of the black hole at the boundary, in agreement with the classical theory. We also construct an additional observable on the bulk associated with the square of the dilaton field, with no direct classical analog.

Primordial power spectra for scalar perturbations in loop quantum cosmology

We provide the power spectrum of small scalar perturbations propagating in an inflationary scenario within loop quantum cosmology. We consider the hybrid quantization approach applied to a Friedmann--Robertson--Walker spacetime with flat spatial sections coupled to a massive scalar field. We study the quantum dynamics of scalar perturbations on an effective background within this hybrid approach. We consider in our study adiabatic states of different orders. For them, we find that the hybrid quantization is in good agreement with the predictions of the dressed metric approach. We also propose an initial vacuum state for the perturbations, and compute the primordial and the anisotropy power spectrum in order to qualitatively compare with the current observations of Planck mission. We find that our vacuum state is in good agreement with them, showing a suppression of the power spectrum for large scale anisotropies. We compare with other choices already studied in the literature.
