Stacky Framework for the Classification of Singular Fibers in Fibered Surfaces

We develop a strategy for the classification of singular fibers in smooth fibered surfaces by exploiting the fact that, in the tame case, a fibration with smooth general fiber of genus $g > 1$ corresponds to a representable morphism from a stacky base to $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_g$ thanks to the root stack valuative criterion for properness of tame stacks. This framework serves as another justification of Dokchitser's classification of reduction types independently of Winters' abstract result.

An Analysis of Large Astronomical Detector Controller Systems and Implications for Future ESO Detector Systems

Large astronomical instruments using tens to hundreds of optical or infrared science detectors pose specific challenges for detector control, where, in addition to performance, other engineering aspects like scalability, power consumption, size, weight and programmatic aspects such as cost and sustainability need to be considered. In this paper we analyze the approach existing instruments have taken for detector control. We focus this analysis on recent ground based astronomical instruments using 10 or more detectors for science imaging or spectrography. From this analysis we identify key technologies, like cryogenic electronics, Ethernet based interfaces and fully-digital detectors, for implementing efficient control of many detectors. We also propose a concept joining all identified technologies that could be considered for future large ESO instruments as a complement of ESO's general detector controller, NGCII.

An exotic 5RP^2 in the 4-sphere

We show an example of an embedded copy of 5RP^2 in the four-sphere which is topologically standard but smoothly knotted, i.e. smoothly not isotopic to the standard embedding.

Exotic surfaces

We construct the first exotic $\mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# 4 \overline{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}$ by means of rational blowdowns. Similarly, we construct the first exotic $3\mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# b^- \overline{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}$ for $b^-=9,8,7$ . All of them are minimal and symplectic, as they are produced from projective surfaces $W$ with Wahl singularities, and $K_W$ big and nef. In more generality, we elaborate on the problem of finding exotic $(2χ(\mathcal{O}_W)-1) \mathbb C \mathbb P^2 \# (10χ(\mathcal{O}_W)-K^2_W-1) \overline{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}$ from these Kollár--Shepherd-Barron--Alexeev surfaces $W$, obtaining explicit geometric obstructions.

Rational configurations in K3 surfaces and simply-connected $p_g=1$ surfaces for $K^2=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9$

We prove the existence of $(20-2K^2)$-dimensional families of simply-connected surfaces with ample canonical class, $p_g=1$, and $1 \leq K^2 \leq 9$, and we study the relation with configurations of rational curves in K3 surfaces via $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein smoothings. Our surfaces with $K^2=7$ and $K^2=9$ are the first surfaces known in the literature, together with the existence of a $4$-dimensional family for $K^2=8$.

Detector Systems Engineering for Extremely Large Instruments

The scientific detector systems for the ESO ELT first-light instruments, HARMONI, MICADO, and METIS, together will require 27 science detectors: seventeen 2.5 $μ$m cutoff H4RG-15 detectors, four 4K x 4K 231-84 CCDs, five 5.3 $μ$m cutoff H2RG detectors, and one 13.5 $μ$m cutoff GEOSNAP detector. This challenging program of scientific detector system development covers everything from designing and producing state-of-the-art detector control and readout electronics, to developing new detector characterization techniques in the lab, to performance modeling and final system verification. We report briefly on the current design of these detector systems and developments underway to meet the challenging scientific performance goals of the ELT instruments.

The World-Trade Web: Topological Properties, Dynamics, and Evolution

This paper studies the statistical properties of the web of import-export relationships among world countries using a weighted-network approach. We analyze how the distributions of the most important network statistics measuring connectivity, assortativity, clustering and centrality have co-evolved over time. We show that all node-statistic distributions and their correlation structure have remained surprisingly stable in the last 20 years -- and are likely to do so in the future. Conversely, the distribution of (positive) link weights is slowly moving from a log-normal density towards a power law. We also characterize the autoregressive properties of network-statistics dynamics. We find that network-statistics growth rates are well-proxied by fat-tailed densities like the Laplace or the asymmetric exponential-power. Finally, we find that all our results are reasonably robust to a few alternative, economically-meaningful, weighting schemes.

On the Topological Properties of the World Trade Web: A Weighted Network Analysis

This paper studies the topological properties of the World Trade Web (WTW) and its evolution over time by employing a weighted network analysis. We show that the WTW, viewed as a weighted network, displays statistical features that are very different from those obtained by using a traditional binary-network approach. In particular, we find that: (i) the majority of existing links are associated to weak trade relationships; (ii) the weighted WTW is only weakly disassortative; (iii) countries holding more intense trade relationships are more clustered.
