Preheating in Einstein-Cartan Higgs Inflation: Oscillon formation

We make use of classical lattice simulations in 3 + 1 dimensions to study the preheating stage of Higgs Inflation in Einstein-Cartan gravity. Focusing for concreteness on a simplified scenario involving the seminal Nieh-Yan term, we demonstrate the formation of dense and spatially localized oscillon configurations constituting up to 70% of the total energy density. The emergence of these meta-stable objects may lead to a prolonged period of matter domination, effectively modifying the post-inflationary history of the Universe as compared to the metric and Palatini counterparts. Notably, the creation of oscillons comes together with a significant gravitational wave signal, whose typical frequency lies, however, beyond the range accessible by existing and planned gravitational wave experiments. The impact of the Standard Model gauge bosons and fermions and the potential extension of our results to more general Einstein-Cartan settings is also discussed.

Observational Constraints on Early Coupled Quintessence

We investigate an Early Coupled Quintessence model where a light scalar mediates a fifth force stronger than gravity among dark matter particles and leads to the growth of perturbations prior to matter-radiation equality. Using cosmological data from the $\textit{Planck}$ Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, the Pantheon+ Type 1a Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, we constrain the coupling strength $β$ and the redshift $z_{\rm OFF}$ at which the interaction becomes effectively inactive, finding a firm degeneracy between these two parameters which holds true regardless of when the scaling regime begins.

From Hubble to Bubble

The detection of a stochastic Gravitational Wave (GW) background sourced by a cosmological phase transition would allow us to see the early Universe from a completely new perspective, illuminating aspects of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics and inflationary cosmology. In this study, we investigate whether the evolution of the scalar potential of a minimal SM extension after inflation can lead to a strong first-order phase transition. In particular, we focus on a BSM spectator scalar field that is non-minimally coupled to gravity and has a dynamical double-well potential. As inflation ends, the potential barrier diminishes due to the evolution of the curvature scalar. Therefore, a phase transition can proceed through the nucleation of true-vacuum bubbles that collide as they fill the Universe and produce GWs. We consider high and low scales of inflation, while also taking into account a kination period between inflation and the onset of radiation domination. With this prescription, we showcase a proof-of-concept study of a new triggering mechanism for BSM phase transitions in the early Universe, whose GW signatures could potentially be probed with future detectors.

The geometry of inflationary observables: lifts, flows, equivalence classes

The Eisenhart lift allows to formulate the dynamics of a scalar field in a potential as pure geodesic motion in a curved field-space manifold involving an additional fictitious vector field. Making use of the formalism in the context of inflation, we show that the main inflationary observables can be expressed in terms of the geometrical properties of a two-dimensional uplifted field-space manifold spanned by the time derivatives of the scalar and the temporal component of the vector. This allows to abstract from specific potentials and models and describe inflation solely in terms of the flow of geometric quantities. Our findings are illustrated through several inflationary examples previously considered in the literature.

On the impact of non-local gravity on compact stars

We study the impact of non-local modifications of General Relativity on stellar structure. In particular, assuming an analytic distortion function and specific equations of state, we made use of remnant stars to put qualitative constraints on a parameter not directly restricted by solar system tests. Using current data sets available for white dwarfs and strange quark stars candidates we find that the most stringent bounds come from the objects displaying the highest core densities, namely strange quark stars. Specifically, the constraints obtained from this class of stars are three to four orders of magnitude tighter than those obtained using white dwarfs.

Higgs-Dilaton Inflation in Einstein-Cartan gravity

We study the phenomenology of the Higgs-Dilaton model in the context of Einstein-Cartan gravity, focusing on the separate impact of the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms on the inflationary observables. Using analytical and numerical techniques, we show the predictions of these scenarios to display an attractor-like behaviour intrinsically related to the curvature of the field-space manifold in the metric formulation of the theory. Beyond that, the analysis of the Nieh-Yan case reveals the existence of an additional attractor solution induced by a cubic pole in the inflaton kinetic term that becomes relevant at large dilaton couplings. This constitutes a unique feature of the Einstein-Cartan formulation as compared to the metric and Palatini counterparts.

Quintessential inflation: A tale of emergent and broken symmetries

Quintessential inflation provides a unified description of inflation and dark energy in terms of a single scalar degree of freedom, the cosmon. We present here a comprehensive overview of this appealing paradigm, highlighting its key ingredients and keeping a reasonable and homogeneous level of details. After summarizing the cosmological evolution in a simple canonical case, we discuss how quintessential inflation can be embedded in a more general scalar-tensor formulation and its relation to variable gravity scenarios. Particular emphasis is placed on the role played by symmetries. In particular, we discuss the evolution of the cosmon field in terms of ultraviolet and infrared fixed points potentially appearing in quantum gravity formulations and leading to the emergence of scale invariance in the early and late Universe. The second part of the review is devoted to the exploration of the phenomenological consequences of the paradigm. First, we discuss how direct couplings of the cosmon field to matter may affect neutrinos masses and primordial structure formation. Second, we describe how Ricci-mediated couplings to spectator fields can trigger the spontaneous symmetry breaking of internal symmetries such as, but not limited to, global U(1) or $Z_2$ symmetries, and affect a large variety of physical processes in the early Universe.

Hubble-induced phase transitions on the lattice with applications to Ricci reheating

Using 3+1 classical lattice simulations, we follow the symmetry breaking pattern and subsequent non-linear evolution of a spectator field non-minimally coupled to gravity when the post-inflationary dynamics is given in terms of a stiff equation-of-state parameter. We find that the gradient energy density immediately after the transition represents a non-negligible fraction of the total energy budget, steadily growing to equal the kinetic counterpart. This behaviour is reflected on the evolution of the associated equation-of-state parameter, which approaches a universal value $1/3$, independently of the shape of non-linear interactions. Combined with kination, this observation allows for the generic onset of radiation domination for arbitrary self-interacting potentials, significantly extending previous results in the literature. The produced spectrum at that time is, however, non-thermal, precluding the naive extraction of thermodynamical quantities like temperature. Potential identifications of the spectator field with the Standard Model Higgs are also discussed.

Chiral gravitational waves and primordial black holes in UV-protected Natural Inflation

We consider an UV-protected Natural Inflation scenario involving Chern-Simons-like interactions between the inflaton and some beyond the Standard Model gauge fields. The accelerated expansion of the Universe is supported by a combination of a gravitationally-enhanced friction sensitive to the scale of inflation and quantum friction effects associated with the explosive production of gauge fluctuations. The synergy of these two velocity-restraining mechanisms allows for: $i)$ Natural Inflation potentials involving only sub-Planckian coupling constants, $ii)$ the generation of a dark matter component in the form of primordial black holes, and $iii)$ a potentially observable background of chiral gravitational waves at small scales.

UV Freeze-in in Starobinsky Inflation

In the Starobinsky model of inflation, the observed dark matter abundance can be produced from the direct decay of the inflaton field only in a very narrow spectrum of close-to-conformal scalar fields and spinors of mass $\sim 10^7$ GeV. This spectrum can be, however, significantly broadened in the presence of effective non-renormalizable interactions between the dark and the visible sectors. In particular, we show that UV freeze-in can efficiently generate the right dark matter abundance for a large range of masses spanning from the keV to the PeV scale and arbitrary spin, without significantly altering the heating dynamics. We also consider the contribution of effective interactions to the inflaton decay into dark matter.

One residue to rule them all: Electroweak symmetry breaking, inflation and field-space geometry

We point out that the successful generation of the electroweak scale via gravitational instanton configurations in certain scalar-tensor theories can be viewed as the aftermath of a simple requirement: the existence of a quadratic pole with a sufficiently small residue in the Einstein-frame kinetic term for the Higgs field. In some cases, the inflationary dynamics may also be controlled by this residue and therefore related to the Fermi-to-Planck mass ratio, up to possible uncertainties associated with the instanton regularization. We present here a unified framework for this hierarchy generation mechanism, showing that the aforementioned residue can be associated with the curvature of the Einstein-frame target manifold in models displaying spontaneous breaking of dilatations. Our findings are illustrated through examples previously considered in the literature.

Boosting Ultraviolet Freeze-in in NO Models

We present a novel UV freeze-in mechanism for enhancing the dark matter abundance in cosmologies where inflation is followed by an epoch dominated by a fluid stiffer than radiation. In such scenarios, even a small radiation abundance, produced for instance by instantaneous preheating effects, will eventually dominate the total energy density of the Universe without the need for a complete inflaton decay. For the sake of concreteness, we focus in non-oscillatory (NO) quintessential inflation models, albeit our treatment is rather general and can be extended to other scenarios. The high temperature of the initial thermal bath together with the absence of subsequent entropy injections into the Standard Model plasma translates into a highly-effective UV DM freeze-in. In particular, we find that, during kination, an enhancement in the DM abundance is generically obtained for any production cross-section not-decreasing with temperature.

Scale symmetry, the Higgs and the Cosmos

I review the Higgs-Dilaton model: a scale-invariant extension of the Standard Model and gravity able to support inflation and dark energy with just an additional degree of freedom on top of the Standard Model content. Potential extensions of the simplest realization on the basis of transverse diffeomorphisms are also discussed.

Hubble-induced phase transitions: Walls are not forever

The interplay between non-minimally coupled scalar fields and a kinetic-dominated era following the end of inflation triggers the spontaneous symmetry breaking of internal symmetries and the subsequent evolution of the fields towards large expectation values. We present here a detailed analysis of the associated dynamics in quintessential inflation scenarios involving a non-minimally coupled $Z_2$-symmetric spectator field. By analytically following the evolution of the spectator field fluctuations at early times, we characterize the formation of classical, homogeneous and spatially-localized field configurations separated by domain walls. The life expectancy of these dividing barriers is set by the scale of inflation, the non-minimal coupling and self-interactions of the spectator field and potentially, but not necessarily, the duration of the heating stage. For most of the parameter space, the domain walls are doomed to disappear before big bang nucleosynthesis. Potential phenomenological consequences of the scenario are discussed.

Primordial dark matter halos from fifth forces

We argue that primordial dark matter halos could be generated during radiation domination by long range attractive forces stronger than gravity. In this paper we derive the conditions under which these structures could dominate the dark matter content of the Universe while passing microlensing constraints and cosmic microwave background energy injection bounds. The dark matter particles would be clumped in objects in the solar mass range with typical sizes of the order of the solar system. Consequences for direct dark matter searches are important.

Scale-invariant alternatives to general relativity. III. The inflation--dark-energy connection

We discuss the cosmological phenomenology of biscalar-tensor models displaying a maximally symmetric Einstein-frame kinetic sector and constructed on the basis of scale symmetry and volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. These theories contain a single dimensionful parameter $Λ_0$-associated with the invariance under the aforementioned restricted coordinate transformations-and a massless dilaton field. At large field values these scenarios lead to inflation with no generation of isocurvature perturbations. The corresponding predictions depend only on two dimensionless parameters, which characterize the curvature of the field--manifold and the leading order behavior of the inflationary potential. For $Λ_0=0$ the scale symmetry is unbroken and the dilaton admits only derivative couplings to matter, evading all fifth force constraints. For $Λ_0\neq 0$ the field acquires a run-away potential that can support a dark energy dominated era at late times. We confront a minimalistic realization of this appealing framework with present data sets. The impact of possible consistency relations among the early and late Universe dynamics that could appear within this setting is also discussed.

Higgs inflation

The properties of the recently discovered Higgs boson together with the absence of new physics at collider experiments allows us to speculate about consistently extending the Standard Model of particle physics all the way up to the Planck scale. In this context, the Standard Model Higgs non-minimally coupled to gravity could be responsible for the symmetry properties of the Universe at large scales and for the generation of the primordial spectrum of curvature perturbations seeding structure formation. We overview the minimalistic Higgs inflation scenario, its predictions, open issues and extensions and discuss its interplay with the possible metastability of the Standard Model vacuum.

Preheating in Palatini Higgs inflation

We study the details of preheating in Palatini Higgs inflation. We show, that contrary to what happens in the metric formulation of the model, the Universe does not reheat through the creation of gauge bosons only, but also through the tachyonic production of Higgs excitations. The latest entropy production channel turns out to be very efficient and leads to an almost instantaneous onset of radiation domination after the end of inflation. As compared to the metric case, this reduces the number of e-folds needed to solve the usual hot big bang problems while leading to a smaller spectral index for the primordial spectrum of density perturbations.
