Holographic approach to transport in dense QCD matter

The transport properties of dense QCD matter play a crucial role in the physics of neutron stars and their mergers, but are notoriously difficult to study with traditional quantum field theory tools. Specializing to the case of unpaired quark matter in beta equilibrium, we approach the problem through the machinery of holography, in particular the V-QCD and D3-D7 models, and derive results for the electrical and thermal conductivities and the shear and bulk viscosities. In addition we compare the bulk to shear viscosity ratio to the speed of sound and find that it violates the so-called Buchel bound. Our results differ dramatically from earlier predictions of perturbative QCD, the root causes and implications of which we analyze in detail.

Transport in strongly coupled quark matter

Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. Utilizing the V-QCD model, we arrive at results that are in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of perturbation theory, which highlights the differing transport properties of the system at weak and strong coupling and calls for caution in the use of the perturbative results in neutron-star applications.

Brane-jet stability of non-supersymmetric AdS vacua

We classify the non-supersymmetric, and perturbatively stable within $D=4$, AdS vacua of maximal $D=4$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging in a large sector of the supergravity. Seven such vacua are established within this sector, all of them giving rise to non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_{4} \times \textrm{S}^{6}$ type IIA backgrounds with and without non-trivial warpings and with internal fluxes. Then, we analyse the dynamics of various probe D$p$-branes in these backgrounds searching for potential brane-jet instabilities. In all these cases, such instabilities are absent. Finally, an alternative decay channel through tunnelling is investigated, focusing on one of the seven backgrounds. We do not find instabilities either, but the analysis remains inconclusive.

Flowing to $\mathcal{N}=3$ Chern--Simons-matter theory

New renormalisation group flows of three-dimensional Chern--Simons theories with a single gauge group $\textrm{SU}(N)$ and adjoint matter are found holographically. These RG flows have an infrared fixed point given by a CFT with $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetry and $\text{SU}(2)$ flavour symmetry. The ultraviolet fixed point is again described by a CFT with either $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\text{SU}(3)$ symmetry or $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\text{G}_{2}$ symmetry. The gauge/gravity duals of these RG flows are constructed as domain-wall solutions of a gauged supergravity model in four dimensions that enjoys an embedding into massive IIA supergravity. A concrete RG flow that brings a mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFT into the $\mathcal{N}=3$ CFT at low energies is described in detail.

Halving ISO(7) supergravity

Half-maximal, $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$, sectors of $\,D=4\,$ $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. Unlike when embedded in previously considered sectors with fewer fields, these vacua exhibit their full $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ supersymmetry within our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model.

Spectrum of a Supersymmetric Color Superconductor

We have recently shown that the ground state of ${\cal N} = 4$, SU($N_{\rm{\tiny c}}$) super Yang--Mills coupled to $N_{\rm{\tiny f}} \ll N_{\rm{\tiny c}}$ flavors, in the presence of non-zero isospin and R-symmetry charges, is a supersymmetric, superfluid, color superconductor. The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}$ D7-brane probes in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ with electric and instantonic fields on their worldvolume. These correspond to fundamental strings and D3-branes dissolved on the D7-branes, respectively. Here we use this description to determine the spectrum of mesonic excitations. As expected for a charged superfluid we find non-relativistic, massless Goldstone modes. We also find extra ungapped modes that are not associated to the breaking of any global symmetries but to the supersymmetric nature of the ground state. If the quark mass is much smaller than the scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking a pseudo-Goldstone boson is also present. We highlight some new features that appear only for $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}> 2$. We show that, in the generic case of unequal R-symmetry charges, the dissolved strings and D3-branes blow up into a D5-brane supertube stretched between the D7-branes.

Towards a Holographic Quark Matter Crystal

We construct the gravity dual of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$, SU($N_\rm{c}$) super Yang-Mills theory, coupled to $N_\rm{f}$ flavors of dynamical quarks, at non-zero temperature $T$ and non-zero quark density $N_\rm{q}$. The supergravity solutions possess a regular horizon if $T>0$ and include the backreaction of $N_\rm{c}$ color D3-branes and $N_\rm{f}$ flavor D7-branes with $N_\rm{q}$ units of electric flux on their worldvolume. At zero temperature the solutions interpolate between a Landau pole singularity in the ultraviolet and a Lifshitz geometry in the infrared. At high temperature the thermodynamics is directly sensitive to the Landau pole, whereas at low temperature it is not, as expected from effective field theory. At low temperature and sufficiently high charge density we find thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities towards the spontaneous breaking of translation invariance.

A Supersymmetric Color Superconductor from Holography

We use holography to study $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$, SU($N_{\rm \tiny{c}}$) super Yang-Mills coupled to $N_{\rm \tiny{F}} \ll N_{\rm \tiny{c}}$ quark flavors. We place the theory at finite isospin density $n_{\rm \tiny{I}}$ by turning on an isospin chemical potential $μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}=M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$, with $M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$ the quark mass. We also turn on two R-symmetry charge densities $n_1=n_2$. We show that the ground state is a supersymmetric, superfluid, color superconductor, namely a finite-density state that preserves a fraction of supersymmetry in which part of the global symmetries and part of the gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken. The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm \tiny{F}}$ D7-brane probes in $\mbox{AdS}_5 \times \mbox{S}^5$. The symmetry breaking is due to the dissolution of some D3-branes inside the D7-branes triggered by the electric field associated to the isospin charge. The massless spectrum contains Goldstone bosons and their fermionic superpartners. The massive spectrum contains long-lived, mesonic quasi-particles if $n_{\rm \tiny{I}} \ll μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}^3$, and no quasi-particles otherwise. We discuss the possibility that, despite the presence of mass scales and charge densities in the theory, conformal and relativistic invariance arise as emergent symmetries in the infrared.

On actions for (entangling) surfaces and DCFTs

The dynamics of surfaces and interfaces describe many physical systems, including fluid membranes, entanglement entropy and the coupling of defects to quantum field theories. Based on the formulation of submanifold calculus developed by Carter, we introduce a new variational principle for (entangling) surfaces. This principle captures all diffeomorphism constraints on surface/interface actions and their associated spacetime stress tensor. The different couplings to the geometric tensors appearing in the surface action are interpreted in terms of response coefficients within elasticity theory. An example of a surface action with edges at the two-derivative level is studied, including both the parity-even and parity-odd sectors. Its conformally invariant counterpart restricts the type of conformal anomalies that can appear in two-dimensional submanifolds with boundaries. Analogously to hydrodynamics, it is shown that classification methods can be used to constrain the stress tensor of (entangling) surfaces at a given order in derivatives. This analysis reveals a purely geometric parity-odd contribution to the Young modulus of a thin elastic membrane. Extending this novel variational principle to BCFTs and DCFTs in curved spacetimes allows to obtain the Ward identities for diffeomorphism and Weyl transformations. In this context, we provide a formal derivation of the contact terms in the stress tensor and of the displacement operator for a broad class of actions.

BPS black holes from massive IIA on S$^6$

We present BPS black hole solutions in a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity with an abelian dyonic gauging of the universal hypermultiplet moduli space. This supergravity arises as the SU(3)-invariant subsector in the reduction of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. The solutions are supported by non-constant scalar, vector and tensor fields and interpolate between a unique $\textrm{AdS}_{2} \,\times\, \textrm{H}^2$ geometry in the near-horizon region and the domain-wall DW$_{4}$ (four-dimensional) description of the D2-brane at the boundary. Some special solutions with charged AdS$_{4}$ or non-relativistic scaling behaviours in the ultraviolet are also presented.

Holography with a Landau pole

Holography for UV-incomplete gauge theories is important but poorly understood. A paradigmatic example is $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills coupled to $N_f$ quark flavors, which possesses a Landau pole at a UV scale $Λ_{LP}$. The dual gravity solution exhibits a UV singularity at a finite proper distance along the holographic direction. Despite this, holographic renormalization can be fully implemented via analytic continuation to an AdS solution. The presence of a UV cut-off manifests itself in several interesting ways. At energies $E \ll Λ_{LP}$ no pathologies appear, as expected from effective field theory. In contrast, at scales $E \lesssim Λ_{LP}$ the gravitational potential becomes repulsive, and at temperatures $T \lesssim Λ_{LP}$ the specific heat becomes negative. Although we focus on $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with flavor, our qualitative results apply to a much more general class of theories, since they only depend on the fact that the metric near the UV singularity is a hyper-scaling violating metric with exponent $θ> d-1$.

Romans-mass-driven flows on the D2-brane

The addition of supersymmetric Chern-Simons terms to ${\cal N}=8$ super-Yang-Mills theory in three-dimensions is expected to make the latter flow into infrared superconformal phases. We address this problem holographically by studying the effect of the Romans mass on the D2-brane near-horizon geometry. Working in a consistent, effective four-dimensional setting provided by $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonic $\textrm{ISO(7)}$ gauging, we verify the existence of a rich web of supersymmetric domain walls triggered by the Romans mass that interpolate between the (four-dimensional description of the) D2-brane and various superconformal phases. We also construct domain walls for which both endpoints are superconformal. While most of our results are numerical, we provide analytic results for the $\textrm{SU}(3)\times \textrm{U}(1)$-invariant flow into an ${\cal N}=2$ conformal phase recently discovered.

Unquenched flavor on the Higgs branch

We construct the gravity duals of the Higgs branches of three-dimensional (four-dimensional) super Yang-Mills theories coupled to $N_\textrm{f}$ quark flavors. The effect of the quarks on the color degrees of freedom is included, and corresponds on the gravity side to the backreaction of $N_\textrm{f}$ flavor D6-branes (D7-branes) on the background of $N_\textrm{c}$ color D2-branes (D3-branes). The Higgsing of the gauge group arises from the dissolution of some color branes inside the flavor branes. The dissolved color branes are represented by non-Abelian instantons whose backreaction is also included. The result is a cascading-like solution in which the effective number of color branes varies along the holographic direction. In the three-dimensional case the solution may include an arbitrary number of quasi-conformal (walking) regions.

Electric/magnetic duality and RG flows in AdS4/CFT3

A large set of relevant deformations of the ABJM field theory on a stack of M2 branes is captured holographically by D=4 N=8 SO(8)-gauged supergravity, which has accordingly been applied to study renormalisation group (RG) flows of the field theory between distinct superconformal phases. Recently, it has been discovered that this supergravity is not unique, and that a one-parameter family of gaugings of maximal supergravity exists. The parameter is an angle that measures the mixture of electric and magnetic vectors that gauge SO(8) dyonically. We construct and comprehensively characterise all domain walls between the critical points of the new supergravities with at least SU(3) invariance, which are expected to be dual to RG flows of new field theories defined at least at large N. We also construct some walls running off to infinity in scalar space, which we expect to be dual to Coulomb branch flows of these field theories.

Three-dimensional super Yang-Mills with unquenched flavor

We construct analytically the gravity duals of three-dimensional, super Yang-Mills-type theories with $\mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry coupled to $N_f$ quark flavors. The backreaction of the quarks on the color degrees of freedom is included, and corresponds on the gravity side to the backreaction of $N_f$ D6-branes on the background of $N$ D2-branes. The D6-branes are smeared over the compact part of the geometry, which must be a six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifold in order to preserve supersymmetry. For massless quarks, the solutions flow in the IR to an $AdS_4$ fixed point dual to a Chern-Simons-matter theory. For light quarks the theories exhibit quasi-conformal dynamics (walking) at energy scales $m_q \ll E \ll λN_f / N$, with $λ= g_{\text{YM}}^2 N$ the 't Hooft coupling.

Bifundamental Superfluids from Holography

We study the holographic dual of a (2+1)-dimensional s-wave superfluid that breaks an abelian U(1) x U(1) global symmetry group to the diagonal U(1)_V. The model is inspired by Sen's tachyonic action, and the operator that condenses transforms in the bifundamental representation of the symmetry group. We focus on two configurations: the first one describes a marginal operator, and the phase diagram at finite temperature contains a first or a second order phase transition, depending on the parameters that determine the theory. In the second model the operator is relevant and the finite temperature transitions are always second order. In the latter case the conductivity for the current associated to the broken symmetry shows quasiparticle excitations at low temperatures, with mass given by the width of the superconducting gap. The suppression of spectral weight at low frequencies is also observed in the conductivity associated to the conserved symmetry, for which the DC value decreases as the temperature is reduced.

(Super)Yang-Mills at Finite Heavy-Quark Density

We study the gravitational duals of $d$-dimensional Yang-Mills theories with $d\leq 6$ in the presence of an ${\cal O} (N^2)$ density of heavy quarks, with $N$ the number of colors. For concreteness we focus on maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills, but our results apply to a larger class of theories with or without supersymmetry. The gravitational solutions describe renormalization group flows towards infrared scaling geometries characterized by fixed dynamical and hyperscaling-violating exponents. The special case $d=5$ yields an $AdS_3 \times \mathbb{R}^4 \times S^4$ geometry upon uplifting to M-theory. We discuss the multitude of physical scales that separate different dynamical regimes along the flows, as well as the validity of the supergravity description. We also present exact black brane solutions that encode the low-temperature thermodynamics.

Horizon universality and anomalous conductivities

We show that the value of chiral conductivities associated with anomalous transport is universal in a general class of strongly coupled quantum field theories. Our result applies to theories with no dynamical gluon fields and admitting a gravitational holographic dual in the large N limit. On the gravity side the result follows from near horizon universality of the fluctuation equations, similar to the holographic calculation of the shear viscosity.
