Difference-in-Differences in the Presence of Unknown Interference

The stable unit treatment value (SUTVA) is a crucial assumption in the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) research design. It rules out hidden versions of treatment and any sort of interference and spillover effects across units. Even if this is a strong assumption, it has not received much attention from DiD practitioners and, in many cases, it is not even explicitly stated as an assumption, especially the no-interference assumption. In this technical note, we investigate what the DiD estimand identifies in the presence of unknown interference. We show that the DiD estimand identifies a contrast of causal effects, but it is not informative on any of these causal effects separately, without invoking further assumptions. Then, we explore different sets of assumptions under which the DiD estimand becomes informative about specific causal effects. We illustrate these results by revisiting the seminal paper on minimum wages and employment by Card and Krueger (1994).

Do Test Scores Help Teachers Give Better Track Advice to Students? A Principal Stratification Analysis

Every year, over one million EU students choose a secondary school track based on teacher recommendations, yet little evidence shows this yields optimal assignments. Using Dutch data, we examine whether access to standardized test scores improves recommendation quality. We develop a Principal-Stratification metric in a quasi-randomized setting, conduct a welfare analysis that flexibly weights short- and long-term losses, and assess principal fairness by examining whether test-score access affects equity across protected attributes. Results are robust to replacing the Exclusion Restriction assumption underlying our main identification strategy with alternative assumptions. Allowing recommendation upgrades when test scores exceed expectations increases successful placement in more demanding tracks by at least 6%, while misplacing 7% of weaker students. Only unrealistically high weights on short-term losses would justify banning such upgrades. Test-score access also yields fairer recommendations for immigrant and low-SES students. Our methodology and findings contribute to the literature on algorithm-assisted human decisions.

Estimating the Intensive Margin Effect in Panel Data Settings

Many policies operate through two different channels: the extensive margin (e.g., the decision to participate) and the intensive margin (e.g., the intensity of the response among participants). This paper develops a novel identification strategy to estimate the intensive margin effect in panel data settings. I adapt the Horowitz-Manski-Lee bounds to the Changes-in-Changes framework to partially identify both the average and quantile intensive margin treatment effects. Additionally, I explore how to leverage multiple sources of sample selection to relax the monotonicity assumption in the original Horowitz-Manski-Lee bounds, which may be of independent interest. Alongside the identification strategy, I present estimators and inference results. I illustrate the relevance of the proposed methodology by analyzing a job training program in Colombia.
