Unification and Dark Matter in a Minimal Scalar Extension of the Standard Model

The six Higgs doublet model is a minimal extension of the Standard Model that addresses dark matter and gauge coupling unification. Another Higgs doublet in a 5 representation of a discrete symmetry group, such as S_6, is added to the SM. The lightest components of the 5-Higgs are neutral, stable and serve as dark matter so long as the discrete symmetry is not broken. Direct and indirect detection signals, as well as collider signatures are discussed. The five-fold multiplicity of the dark matter decreases its mass and typically helps make the dark matter more visible in upcoming experiments.

Reheating Metastable O'Raifeartaigh Models

In theories with multiple vacua, reheating to a temperature greater than the height of a barrier can stimulate transitions from a desirable metastable vacuum to a lower energy state. We discuss the constraints this places on various theories and demonstrate that in a class of supersymmetric models this transition does not occur even for arbitrarily high reheating temperature.

Four Taus at the Tevatron

We study extensions of the Standard Model where the Higgs boson dominantly decays via a cascade to four tau leptons, and discuss whether this decay is visible at the Tevatron. We find that with an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^-1, there can be excesses in multi-lepton events in several channels for a Higgs boson of a mass = 110 GeV.

One Loop Predictions of the Finely Tuned SSM

We study the finely tuned SSM, recently proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Dimopoulos, at the one loop level. The runnings of the four gaugino Yukawa couplings, the mu term, the gaugino masses, and the Higgs quartic coupling are computed. The Higgs mass is found to be 130 - 170 GeV for M_s > 10^6 GeV. If the Yukawa coupling constants are measured at the 1% level, this can determine the SUSY breaking scale to within an order of magnitude. Measuring the relationships between the couplings to this accuracy provides a striking signal for this model.

D-Terms, Unification, and the Higgs Mass

We study gauge extensions of the MSSM that contain non-decoupling D-terms, which contribute to the Higgs boson mass. These models naturally maintain gauge coupling unification and raise the Higgs mass without fine-tuning. Unification constrains the structure of the gauge extensions, limiting the Higgs mass in these models to roughly less than 150 GeV. The D-terms contribute to the Higgs mass only if the extended gauge symmetry is broken at energies of a few TeV, leading to new heavy gauge bosons in this mass range.

Little Higgs and Custodial SU(2)

In this note we present a little Higgs model that has custodial SU(2) as an approximate symmetry. This theory is a simple modification of the ``Minimal Moose'' with SO(5) global symmetries protecting the Higgs mass. This allows for a simple limit where TeV physics makes small contributions to precision electroweak observables. The spectrum of particles and their couplings to Standard Model fields are studied in detail. At low energies this model has two Higgs doublets and it favours a light Higgs from precision electroweak bounds, though for different reasons than in the Standard Model. The limit on the breaking scale, f, is roughly 700 GeV, with a top partner of 2 TeV, W' and B' of 2.5 TeV, and heavy Higgs partners of 2 TeV. These particles are easily accessible at hadron colliders.

Scalar Dark Matter From Theory Space

The scalar dark matter candidate in a prototypical theory space little Higgs model is investigated. We review all details of the model pertinent to dark matter. We perform a thermal relic density calculation including couplings to the gauge and Higgs sectors of the model. We find two regions of parameter space that give acceptable dark matter abundances. The first region has a dark matter candidate with a mass of order 100 GeV, the second region has a heavy candidate with a mass greater than about 500 GeV$. The dark matter candidate in either region is an admixture of an SU(2) triplet and an SU(2) singlet, thereby constituting a WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle).

What Precision Electroweak Physics Says About the SU(6)/Sp(6) Little Higgs

We study precision electroweak constraints on the close cousin of the Littlest Higgs, the SU(6)/Sp(6) model. We identify a near-oblique limit in which the heavy W' and B' decouple from the light fermions, and then calculate oblique corrections, including one-loop contributions from the extended top sector and the two Higgs doublets. We find regions of parameter space that give acceptably small precision electroweak corrections and only mild fine tuning in the Higgs potential, and also find that the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is relatively unconstrained by precision electroweak data. The fermions from the extended top sector can be as light as 1 TeV, and the W' can be as light as 1.8 TeV. We include an independent breaking scale for the B', which can still have a mass as low as a few hundred GeV.

Deconstructing six dimensional gauge theories with strongly coupled moose meshes

It has recently been realized that five dimensional theories can be generated dynamically from asymptotically free, QCD-like four dimensional dynamics via ``deconstruction.'' In this paper we generalize this construction to six dimensional theories using a moose mesh with alternating weak and strong gauge groups. A new ingredient is the appearance of self couplings between the higher dimensional components of the gauge fields that appear as a potential for pseudo-Goldstone bosons in the deconstructed picture. We show that, in the limit where the weak gauge couplings are made large, such potentials are generated with appropriate size from finite one loop correction. Our construction has a number of applications, in particular to the constructions of ``little Higgs'' models of electroweak symmetry breaking.

Phenomenology of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from Theory Space

Recently, a new class of realistic models for electroweak symmetry breaking have been constructed, without supersymmetry. These theories have naturally light Higgs bosons and perturbative new physics at the TeV scale. We describe these models in detail, and show that electroweak symmetry breaking can be triggered by a large top quark Yukawa coupling. A rich spectrum of particles is predicted, with a pair of light Higgs doublets accompanied by new light weak triplet and singlet scalars. The lightest of these new scalars is charged under a geometric discrete symmetry and is therefore stable, providing a new candidate for WIMP dark matter. At TeV energies, a plethora of new heavy scalars, gauge bosons and fermions are revealed, with distinctive quantum numbers and decay modes.

Mooses, Topology and Higgs

New theories of electroweak symmetry breaking have recently been constructed that stabilize the weak scale and do not rely upon supersymmetry. In these theories the Higgs boson is a weakly coupled pseudo-Goldstone boson. In this note we study the class of theories that can be described by theory spaces and show that the fundamental group of theory space describes all the relevant classical physics in the low energy theory. The relationship between the low energy physics and the topological properties of theory space allow a systematic method for constructing theory spaces that give any desired low energy particle content and potential. This provides us with tools for analyzing and constructing new theories of electroweak symmetry breaking.
