A subclass of the Cowen-Douglas class and similarity

We consider a subclass of the Cowen-Douglas class in which the problem of deciding whether two operators are similar becomes more manageable. A similarity criterion for Cowen-Douglas operators is known to be dependent on the trace of the curvatures of the corresponding eigenvector bundles. Unless the given eignvector bundle is a line bundle, the computation of the curvatures, in general, is not so simple as one might hope. By using a structure theorem given in \cite{JW}, we reduce the problem of finding the trace of the curvatures to looking at the curvatures of the associated line bundles. Moreover, several questions related to the similarity problem are also taken into account.

Idempotent, model, and Toeplitz operators attaining their norms

We study idempotent, model, and Toeplitz operators that attain the norm. Notably, we prove that if $\mathcal{Q}$ is a backward shift invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$, then the model operator $S_{\mathcal{Q}}$ attains its norm. Here $S_{\mathcal{Q}} = P_{\mathcal{Q}}M_z|_{\mathcal{Q}}$, the compression of the shift $M_z$ on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ to $\mathcal{Q}$.

Beurling quotient modules on the polydisc

Let $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ denote the Hardy space over the polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$, $n \geq 2$. A closed subspace $\mathcal{Q} \subseteq H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is called Beurling quotient module if there exists an inner function $θ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $\mathcal{Q} = H^2(\mathbb{D}^n) /θH^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. We present a complete characterization of Beurling quotient modules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$: Let $\mathcal{Q} \subseteq H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ be a closed subspace, and let $C_{z_i} = P_{\mathcal{Q}} M_{z_i}|_{\mathcal{Q}}$, $i=1, \ldots, n$. Then $\mathcal{Q}$ is a Beurling quotient module if and only if \[ (I_{\mathcal{Q}} - C_{z_i}^* C_{z_i}) (I_{\mathcal{Q}} - C_{z_j}^* C_{z_j}) = 0 \qquad (i \neq j). \] We present two applications: first, we obtain a dilation theorem for Brehmer $n$-tuples of commuting contractions, and, second, we relate joint invariant subspaces with factorizations of inner functions. All results work equally well for general vector-valued Hardy spaces.

Factorizations of Schur functions

The Schur class, denoted by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$, is the set of all functions analytic and bounded by one in modulus in the open unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$, that is \[ \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}) = \{φ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}): \|φ\|_{\infty} := \sup_{z \in \mathbb{D}} |φ(z)| \leq 1\}. \] The elements of $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ are called Schur functions. A classical result going back to I. Schur states: A function $φ: \mathbb{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ is in $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ if and only if there exist a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and an isometry (known as colligation operator matrix or scattering operator matrix) \[ V = \begin{bmatrix} a & B \\ C & D \end{bmatrix} : \mathbb{C} \oplus \mathcal{H} \rightarrow \mathbb{C} \oplus \mathcal{H}, \] such that $φ$ admits a transfer function realization corresponding to $V$, that is \[ φ(z) = a + z B (I_{\mathcal{H}} - z D)^{-1} C \quad \quad (z \in \mathbb{D}). \] An analogous statement holds true for Schur functions on the bidisc. On the other hand, Schur-Agler class functions on the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ is a well-known "analogue" of Schur functions on $\mathbb{D}$. In this paper, we present algorithms to factorize Schur functions and Schur-Agler class functions in terms of colligation matrices. More precisely, we isolate checkable conditions on colligation matrices that ensure the existence of Schur (Schur-Agler class) factors of a Schur (Schur-Agler class) function and vice versa.

Orthogonality in Banach Spaces via projective tensor product

Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and $x,y\in X$. By definition, we say that $x$ is Birkhoff-James orthogonal to $y$ if $ \|x+λy\|_{X} \geq \|x\|_{X}$ for all $λ\in \mathbb{C}$. We prove that $x$ is Birkhoff-James orthogonal to $y$ if and only if there exists a semi-inner product $φ$ on $X$ such that $\|φ\| = 1$, $φ(x,x)=\|x\|^2$ and $φ(x,y)=0$. A similar result holds for $C^*$-algebras. A key point in our approach to orthogonality is the representations of bounded bilinear maps via projective tensor product spaces.

Beurling type invariant subspaces of composition operators

Let $\mathbb{D}$ be the open unit disk in $\mathbb{C}$, let $H^2$ denote the Hardy space on $\mathbb{D}$ and let $φ: \mathbb{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{D}$ be a holomorphic self map of $\mathbb{D}$. The composition operator $C_φ$ on $H^2$ is defined by \[ (C_φ f)(z)=f(φ(z)) \quad \quad (f \in H^2,\, z \in \mathbb{D}). \] Denote by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ the set of all functions that are holomorphic and bounded by one in modulus on $\mathbb{D}$, that is \[ \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}) = \{ψ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}): \|ψ\|_{\infty} := \sup_{z \in \mathbb{D}} |ψ(z)| \leq 1\}. \] The elements of $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ are called Schur functions. The aim of this paper is to answer the following question concerning invariant subspaces of composition operators: Characterize $φ$, holomorphic self maps of $\mathbb{D}$, and inner functions $θ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ such that the Beurling type invariant subspace $θH^2$ is an invariant subspace for $C_φ$. We prove the following result: $C_φ (θH^2) \subseteq θH^2$ if and only if \[ \frac{θ\circ φ}θ \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}). \] This classification also allows us to recover or improve some known results on Beurling type invariant subspaces of composition operators.

Commuting row contractions with polynomial characteristic functions

A characteristic function is a special operator-valued analytic function defined on the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ associated with an $n$-tuple of commuting row contraction on some Hilbert space. In this paper, we continue our study of the representations of $n$-tuples of commuting row contractions on Hilbert spaces, which have polynomial characteristic functions. Gleason's problem plays an important role in the representations of row contractions. We further complement the representations of our row contractions by proving theorems concerning factorizations of characteristic functions. We also emphasize the importance and the role of the noncommutative operator theory and noncommutative varieties to the classification problem of polynomial characteristic functions.

Submodules in polydomains and noncommutative varieties

Tensor product of Fock spaces is analogous to the Hardy space over the unit polydisc. This plays an important role in the development of noncommutative operator theory and function theory in the sense of noncommutative polydomains and noncommutative varieties. In this paper we study joint invariant subspaces of tensor product of full Fock spaces and noncommutative varieties. We also obtain, in particular, by using techniques of noncommutative varieties, a classification of joint invariant subspaces of $n$-fold tensor products of Drury-Arveson spaces.

Isometric dilations and von Neumann inequality for finite rank commuting contractions

Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, we prove that tuples in $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$ always admit explicit isometric dilations and satisfy a refined von Neumann inequality in terms of algebraic varieties in the closure of the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$.

Commutant lifting and Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in several variables

This paper concerns a commutant lifting theorem and a Nevanlinna-Pick type interpolation result in the setting of multipliers from vector-valued Drury-Arveson space to a large class of vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The special case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces includes all natural examples of Hilbert spaces like Hardy space, Bergman space and weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball.

Multiplicities, invariant subspaces and an additive formula

Let $T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n)$ be a commuting tuple of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. The multiplicity of $T$ is the cardinality of a minimal generating set with respect to $T$. In this paper, we establish an additive formula for multiplicities of a class of commuting tuples of operators. A special case of the main result states the following: Let $n \geq 2$, and let $\mathcal{Q}_i$, $i = 1, \ldots, n$, be a proper closed shift co-invariant subspaces of the Dirichlet space or the Hardy space over the unit disc in $\mathbb{C}$. If $\mathcal{Q}_i^{\bot}$, $i = 1, \ldots, n$, is a zero-based shift invariant subspace, then the multiplicity of the joint $M_{\boldsymbol{z}} = (M_{z_1}, \ldots, M_{z_n})$-invariant subspace $(\mathcal{Q}_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes \mathcal{Q}_n)^\perp$ of the Dirichlet space or the Hardy space over the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ is given by \[ \mbox{mult}_{M_{\boldsymbol z}|_{ (\mathcal{Q}_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes \mathcal{Q}_n)^\perp}} (\mathcal{Q}_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes \mathcal{Q}_n)^\perp = \sum_{i=1}^n (\mbox{mult}_{M_z|_{\mathcal{Q}_i^\perp}} (\mathcal{Q}_i^{\bot})) = n. \] A similar result holds for the Bergman space over the unit polydisc.

On certain commuting isometries, joint invariant subspaces and C*-algebras

In this paper, motivated by the Berger, Coburn and Lebow and Bercovici, Douglas and Foias theory for tuples of commuting isometries, we study analytic representations and joint invariant subspaces of a class of commuting $n$-isometries and prove that the $C^*$-algebra generated by the $n$-shift restricted to an invariant subspace of finite codimension in $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is unitarily equivalent to the $C^*$-algebra generated by the $n$-shift on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$.

Hypercontractions and factorizations of multipliers in one and several variables

We introduce the notion of characteristic functions for commuting tuples of hypercontractions on Hilbert spaces, as a generalization of the notion of Sz.-Nagy and Foias characteristic functions of contractions. We present an explicit method to compute characteristic functions of hypercontractions and relate characteristic functions by means of the factors of Schur-Agler class of functions and universal multipliers on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We also offer some factorization properties of multipliers. Characteristic functions of hypercontrctions are complete unitary invariant. The Drury-Arveson space and the weighted Bergman spaces on the unit ball continues to play a significant role in our consideration. Our results are new even in the special case of single hypercontractions.

Linear dynamics in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

Complementing earlier results on dynamics of unilateral weighted shifts, we obtain a sufficient (but not necessary, with supporting examples) condition for hypercyclicity, mixing and chaos for $M_z^*$, the adjoint of $M_z$, on vector-valued analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}$ in terms of the derivatives of kernel functions on the open unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$. Here $M_z$ denotes the multiplication operator by the coordinate function $z$, that is \[ (M_z f) (w) = w f(w), \] for all $f \in \mathcal{H}$ and $w \in \mathbb{D}$. We analyze the special case of quasi-scalar reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We also present a complete characterization of hypercyclicity of $M_z^*$ on tridiagonal reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and some special classes of vector-valued analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.

Pairs of commuting isometries - I

We present an explicit version of Berger, Coburn and Lebow's classification result for pure pairs of commuting isometries in the sense of an explicit recipe for constructing pairs of commuting isometric multipliers with precise coefficients. We describe a complete set of (joint) unitary invariants and compare the Berger, Coburn and Lebow's representations with other natural analytic representations of pure pairs of commuting isometries. Finally, we study the defect operators of pairs of commuting isometries.

Isometric dilations and von Neumann inequality for a class of tuples in the polydisc

The celebrated Sz.-Nagy and Foias and Ando theorems state that a single contraction, or a pair of commuting contractions, acting on a Hilbert space always possesses isometric dilation and subsequently satisfies the von Neumann inequality for polynomials in $\mathbb{C}[z]$ or $\mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, respectively. However, in general, neither the existence of isometric dilation nor the von Neumann inequality holds for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions. The goal of this paper is to provide a taste of the isometric dilations, the von Neumann inequality and a sharper version of von Neumann inequality for a large class of $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions.

On Quotient modules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$: Essential Normality and Boundary Representations

Let $\mathbb{D}^n$ be the open unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n \geq 1$, and let $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ be the Hardy space over $\mathbb{D}^n$. For $n\ge 3$, we show that if $θ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is an inner function, then the $n$-tuple of commuting operators $(C_{z_1}, \ldots, C_{z_n})$ on the Beurling type quotient module $\mathcal{Q}_θ$ is not essentially normal, where \[\mathcal{Q}_θ = H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)/ θH^2(\mathbb{D}^n) \quad \mbox{and} \quad C_{z_j} = P_{\mathcal{Q}_θ} M_{z_j}|_{\mathcal{Q}_θ}\quad (j = 1, \ldots, n).\] Rudin's quotient modules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2)$ are also shown to be not essentially normal. We prove several results concerning boundary representations of $C^*$-algebras corresponding to different classes of quotient modules including doubly commuting quotient modules and homogeneous quotient modules.
