Collider Signatures of Type-X 2HDM + scalar singlet dark matter at HL-LHC

As the 125 GeV Higgs becomes disfavored as a portal to the dark sector, one is motivated to look beyond the SM-Higgs sector, into extended scalar-mediated portal mechanisms. In this work we consider one interesting possibility of such extended scalar sector, namely Type X two Higgs doublet with a scalar singlet dark matter. This model with the advantage of light pseudoscalars also provides the explanation for the observed anomalous magnetic moment of muon. The dark matter phenomenology of this model is unique from the other types of two Higgs doublet models. Therefore, it is quite intriguing to look for signatures specific to this model at the collider experiments. In this work we take up the task of finding suitable final states and regions of parameters space that can be probed at the high-luminosity runs of LHC. We go beyond our rectangular cut-based approach and use Artificial Neural Network which shows remarkable improvement in terms of signal significance.

Analyzing polarized boosted top from stop decay at high luminosity and high energy LHC

Measuring top polarization is extremely important in understanding any new physics that couples to top quark. Here, we take up the task of extracting polarization of top quark coming from TeV-scale stop decay at the upgraded high luminosity and high energy LHC. We focus on the scenario where the two tops from the stop decay lead to semi-leptonic final state. We take into account all relevant backgrounds and put kinematical cuts to suppress them. We arrive at a signal region where the desired signal can be observed with reasonable significance. Next, we examine, in such signal regions, how well top polarization can be measured. For that we have calculated the degree with which left- and right-handed top quarks can be separated from each other, in terms of $P$-values. We have also performed a comparative study between various centre-of-mass energies and integrated luminosities in terms of their reach in probing top polarization from stop decay.

Generalized 2HDM with wrong-sign lepton Yukawa coupling, in light of $g_μ-2$ and lepton flavor violation at the future LHC

To explain the observed muon anomaly and simultaneously evade bounds from lepton flavor violation in the same model parameter space is a long cherished dream. In view of a generalized Two Higgs Doublet Model, with a Yukawa structure as a perturbation of Type-X, we are able to get substantial parameter space satisfying this criteria. We are focusing on a region with "{\bf wrong-sign}" lepton-Yukawa coupling which gives rise to an interesting phenomenological consequences. We found that in the "wrong-sign" region, it is possible to probe the low-mass pseudoscalar in flavor-violating decay mode with considerably better significance compared to the "right-sign" region. Performing a simple cut-based analysis we show that at 14 TeV run of the LHC with $300 fb^{-1}$ integrated luminosity, part of the model parameter space can be probed with significance $\geq 5σ$ which further improves with Artificial Neural Network analysis.

Probing the $H^\pm W^\mp Z$ interaction at the high energy upgrade of the LHC

An $H^\pm W^\mp Z$ interaction at the tree level is common feature of new physics models that feature scalar triplets. In this study, we aim to probe the strength of the aforementioned interaction in a model-agnostic fashion at the futuristic 27 TeV proton-proton collider. We assume that the $H^\pm$ couples dominantly to ($W^\pm,Z$) and ($t,b$). We specifically study the processes that involve the $H^\pm W^\mp Z$ vertex at the production level, that is, $p p \to H^\pm j j$ and $p p \to Z H^\pm$. Moreover, we look into both $H^\pm \to W^\pm Z,~t b$ decays for either production process. Our investigations reveal that the $H^\pm j j$ production process has a greater reach compared to $Z H^\pm$. Moreover, the discovery potential of a charged Higgs improves markedly with respect to the earlier studies corresponding to lower centre-of-mass energies. Finally, we recast our results in the context of the popular Georgi-Machacek model.

Muon g-2 and a type-X two Higgs doublet scenario: some studies in high-scale validity

We study the high-scale validity of a Type-X two Higgs doublet scenario which provides an explanation of the observed value of muon $(g-2)$. This region admits of a pseudoscalar physical state, which is well below the observed 125-GeV scalar in mass. A second neutral scalar particle can be both above and below 125 GeV in such a scenario. Admissible regions in the parameter space are obtained by using the most recent data on muon $(g-2)$, theoretical constraints such as low-scale perturbativity and vacuum stability, and also all experimental constraints, including the available LHC results. Among other things, both the aforesaid orders of CP-even neutral scalar masses are included in our benchmark studies. Two-loop renormalisation group equations are used to predict the values of various couplings at high scales, and the regions in the space spanned by low-scale parameters, which retain perturbative unitarity as well as vacuum stability upto various scales are identified. We thus conclude that such a scenario, while successfully explaining the observed muon $(g-2)$, can be valid upto energy scales ranging from $10^{4}$ GeV to the Planck scale, thus opening up directions of thought on its ultraviolet completion.

Revisiting Generalized Two Higgs Doublet Model in the Light of Muon Anomaly and Lepton Flavor Violating Decays at HL-LHC

One of the main motivations to look beyond the SM is the discrepancy between the theoretical prediction and observation of anomalous magnetic moment of muon. Alleviating this tension between theory and experiment and satisfying the bounds from lepton flavor violation data simultaneously is a challenging task. In this paper, we consider generalised Two Higgs Doublet Model, with a Yukawa structure as a perturbation of Type X Two Higgs Doublet Model. In view of this model, we explore muon anomaly and lepton flavor violation along with constraints coming from B-physics, theoretical constraints, electroweak observables and collider data which can restrict the model parameter space significantly. We find that within the framework of this model it is possible to obtain regions allowed by all constraints, that can provide an explanation for the observed muon anomaly and at the same time predicts interesting signatures of lepton flavor violation. Furthermore, we consider the flavor violating decay of low-mass CP-odd scalar to probe the allowed parameter space at future runs of the LHC. With simple cut-based analysis we show that part of that parameter space can be probed with significance $> 5 σ$. We also provide Artificial Neural Network analysis which definitely improves our cut-based results significantly.

The mono-Higgs + MET signal at the Large Hadron Collider: a study on the $γγ$ and $b\bar{b}$ final states

We investigate the potential of the channel {\em mono-Higgs + MET} in yielding signals of dark mater at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As illustration, a scalar dark matter in a Higgs portal scenario has been chosen, whose phenomenological viability has been ensured by postulating the existence of dimension-6 operators that enable cancellation in certain amplitudes for elastic scattering of dark matter in direct search experiments. These operators are found to have non-negligible contribution to the mono-Higgs signal. Thereafter, we carry out a detailed analysis of this signal, with the accompanying MET providing a useful handle in suppressing backgrounds. Signals for the Higgs decaying into both the diphoton and $b{\bar b}$ channels have been studied. A cut-based simulation is presented first, followed by a demonstration of how the statistical significance can be improved through analyses based on Boosted Decision Trees and Artificial Neural Network. The improvement is found to be especially noticeable for the $b{\bar b}$ channel.

LHC signals of triplet scalars as dark matter portal: cut-based approach and improvement with gradient boosting and neural networks

We consider a scenario where an SU(2) triplet scalar acts as the portal for a scalar dark matter particle. We identify regions of the parameter space, where such a triplet coexists with the usual Higgs doublet consistently with all theoretical as well as neutrino, accelerator and dark matter constraints, and the triplet-dominated neutral state has substantial invisible branching fraction. LHC signals are investigated for such regions, in the final state {\em same-sign dilepton + $\ge$ 2 jets + $\not E_T$.} While straightforward detectability at the high-luminosity run is predicted for some benchmark points in a cut-based analysis, there are other benchmarks where one has to resort to gradient boosting/neural network techniques in order to achieve appreciable signal significance.

Boosted Top quark polarization

In top quark production, the polarization of top quarks, decided by the chiral structure of couplings, is likely to be modified in the presence of any new physics contribution to the production. Hence the same is a good discriminator for those new physics models wherein the couplings have a chiral structure different than that in the Standard Model (SM). In this note we construct probes of the polarization of a top quark decaying hadronically, using easily accessible kinematic variables such as the energy fraction or angular correlations of the decay products. Tagging the boosted top quark using the usual jet sub structure technique we study robustness of these observables for a benchmark process, $W^{\prime} \to tb$. We demonstrate that the energy fraction of b-jet in the laboratory frame and a new angular variable, constructed by us in the top rest frame, are both very powerful tools to discriminate between the left and right polarized top quarks. Based on the polarization sensitive angular variables, we construct asymmetries which reflect the polarization. We study the efficiency of these variables for two new physics processes where which give rise to boosted top quarks: (i) decay of the top squark in the context of supersymmetry searches, and (ii) decays of the Kaluza-Klein(KK) graviton and KK gluon, in Randall Sundrum(RS) model. Remarkably, it is found that the asymmetry can vary over a wide range about +20\% to -20\%. The dependence of asymmetry on top quark couplings of the new particles present in these models beyond the SM (BSM) is also investigated in detail.

LHC signals of a heavy doublet Higgs as dark matter portal: cut-based approach and improvement with gradient boosting and neural networks

Though the 125-GeV scalar, as the Higgs boson of the standard model, is disfavoured as a dark matter portal by direct searches and the observations on relic density, a heavier scalar in an extended electroweak sector can fit into that role. We explore this possibility in the context of two Higgs doublet models (2HDM). Taking Type I and Type II 2HDM as illustration, and assuming a scalar gauge singlet dark matter particle, we show that the heavy neutral CP-even scalar ($H$) can (a) serve as dark matter portal consistently with all data, and (b) have a substantial invisible branching ratio, over a wide region of the parameter space. Using this fact, we estimate rates of LHC signals where $H$ is produced via ({\it i}) gluon fusion, in association with a hard jet, and ({\it ii}) vector boson fusion. Invisible decays of the $H$ can then lead to monojet + $\slashed{E_T}$ in ({\it i}), and two forward jets with large rapidity gap + $\slashed{E_T}$ in ({\it ii}). The second kind of signal usually yields better significance for the high-luminosity run. We also supplement our cut-based analyses with those based on gradient boosted decision trees (XGboost) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques, where the statistical significance distinctly improves, especially for Type II 2HDM.

Current status of MSSM Higgs sector with LHC 13 TeV data

ATLAS and CMS collaborations have reported the results on the Higgs search analyzing $\sim 36$ fb$^{-1}$ data from Run-II of LHC at 13 TeV. In this work, we study the Higgs sector of the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, in light of the recent Higgs data, by studying separately the impact of Run-I and Run-II data. One of the major impacts of the new data on the parameter space comes from the direct searches of neutral CP-even and CP-odd heavy Higgses ($H$ and $A$, respectively) in the $H/A \to τ^{+} τ^{-}$ channel which disfavours high $\tanβ$ regions more efficiently than Run-I data. Secondly, we show that the latest result of the rare radiative decay of $B$ meson imposes a slightly stronger constraint on low $\tan β$ and low $M_A$ region of the parameter space, as compared to its previous measurement. Further, we find that in a global fit Run-II light Higgs signal strength data is almost comparable in strength with the corresponding Run-I data. Finally, we discuss scenarios with the Heavy Higgs boson decaying into electroweakinos and third generation squarks and sleptons.

Extended scalar sectors, effective operators and observed data

The available data on the 125 GeV scalar $h$ is analysed to explore the room for new physics in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. The first part of the study is model-independent, with $h$ couplings to standard model particles scaled by quantities that are taken to be free parameters. At the same time, the additional loop contributions to $h \rightarrow γγ$ and $h \rightarrow Zγ$, mediated by charged scalar contributions in the extended scalar sector, are treated in terms of gauge-invariant effective operators. Having justified this approach for cases where the concerned scalar masses are a little above the $Z$-boson mass, we fit the existing data to obtain marginalized 1$σ$ and 2$σ$ regions in the space of the coefficients of such effective operators, where the limit on the $h \rightarrow Zγ$ branching ratio is used as a constraint. The correlation between, say, the gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion channels, as reflected in a non-diagonal covariance matrix, is taken into account. After thus obtaining model-independent fits, the allowed values of the coefficients are translated into permissible regions of the parameter spaces of several specific models. In this spirit we constrain four different types of two Higgs doublet models, and also models with one or two $Y = 2$ scalar triplets, taking into account the correlatedness of the scale factors in $h$-interactions and the various couplings of charged Higgs states in each extended scenario.

Alternative search strategies for a BSM resonance fitting ATLAS diboson excess

We study an s-channel resonance $R$ as a viable candidate to fit the diboson excess reported by ATLAS. We compute the contribution of the $\sim 2$ TeV resonance $R$ to semileptonic and leptonic final states at 13 TeV LHC. To explain the absence of an excess in semileptonic channel, we explore the possibility where the particle $R$ decays to additional light scalars $X,X$ or $X,Y$. Modified analysis strategy has been proposed to study three particle final state of the resonance decay and to identify decay channels of $X$. Associated production of $R$ with gauge bosons has been studied in detail to identify the production mechanism of $R$. We construct comprehensive categories for vector and scalar BSM particles which may play the role of particles $R$, $X$, $Y$ and find alternate channels to fix the new couplings and search for these particles.

Invisible decays of the heavier Higgs boson in the minimal supersymmetric standard model

We consider the possibility that the heavier CP-even Higgs boson~($H^0$) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) decays invisibly into neutralinos in the light of the recent discovery of the 126 GeV resonance at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). For this purpose we consider the minimal supersymmetric standard model with universal, non-universal and arbitrary boundary conditions on the supersymmetry breaking gaugino mass parameters at the grand unified scale. Typically, scenarios with universal and nonuniversal gaugino masses do not allow invisible decays of the lightest Higgs boson~($h^0$), which is identified with the $126$ GeV resonance, into the lightest neutralinos in the MSSM. With arbitrary gaugino masses at the grand unified scale such an invisible decay is possible. The second lightest Higgs boson can decay into various invisible final states for a considerable region of the MSSM parameter space with arbitrary gaugino masses as well as with the gaugino masses restricted by universal and nonuniversal boundary conditions at the grand unified scale. The possibility of the second lightest Higgs boson of the MSSM decaying into invisible channels is more likely for arbitrary gaugino masses at the grand unified scale. The heavier Higgs boson decay into lighter particles leads to the intriguing possibility that the entire Higgs boson spectrum of the MSSM may be visible at the LHC even if it decays invisibly, during the searches for an extended Higgs boson sector at the LHC. In such a scenario the nonobservation of the extended Higgs sector of the MSSM may carefully be used to rule out regions of the MSSM parameter space at the LHC.

Top Yukawa coupling measurement with indefinite CP Higgs in $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}Φ$

We consider the issue of the top quark Yukawa coupling measurement in a model in dependent and general case with the inclusion of CP-violation in the coupling. Arguably the best process to study this coupling is the associa ted production of Higgs boson along with a $t\bar t$ pair in a machine like the International Linear Collider (ILC). While detailed analyses of the sensitivity of the measurement assuming a Standard Model (SM) - like coupling are available in the context of ILC, conclude that th e coupling could be pinned down at about 10\% level with modest luminosity, our investigations show that the scenario could be different in case of a more general coupling. The modified Lorentz structure resulting in a changed functional dependence of the cross section on the couplin g, along with the difference in the cross section itself leads to considerable deviation in the sensitivity. Our studies with an ILC of center of mass energies of 500 GeV, 800 GeV and 1000 GeV show that moderate CP-mixing in the Higgs sector could change the sensitivity to about 20\ %, while it could be worsened to 75\% in cases which could accommodate more dramatic changes in the coupling. While detailed considerations of the decay distributions point to a need for a relook at the analysis strategy followed for the case of SM such as for a model independent analysis of the top quark Yukawa coupling measurement. This study strongly suggests that, a joint analysis of the CP properties and the Yukawa coupling measurement would be the way forward at the ILC and that caution must be excercised in the measurem ent of the Yukawa couplings and the conclusions drawn from it.

New Physics in $e^+e^- \rightarrow Z γ$ at the ILC with polarized beams: Explorations beyond conventional anomalous triple gauge boson coupling

One of the most-studied signals for physics beyond the standard model in the production of gauge bosons in electron-positron collisions is that due to the anomalous triple gauge boson couplings in the $Z γ$ final state. In this work, we study the implications of this at the ILC with polarized beams for signals that go beyond traditional anomalous triple neutral gauge boson couplings. Here we report a dimension-8 CP-conserving $Z γZ$ vertex that has not found mention in the literature. We carry out a systematic study of the anomalous couplings in general terms and arrive at a classification. We then obtain linear-order distributions with and without CP violation. Furthermore, we place the study in the context of general BSM interactions represented by $e^+e^- Z γ$ contact interactions. We set up a correspondence between the triple gauge boson couplings and the four-point contact interactions. We also present sensitivities on these anomalous couplings, which will be achievable at the ILC with realistic polarization and luminosity.

Invisible decays of the lightest Higgs boson in supersymmetric models

We consider supersymmetric models in which the lightest Higgs scalar can decay invisibly consistent with the constraints on the $126$~GeV state discovered at the CERN LHC. We consider the invisible decay in the minimal supersymmetric standard model~(MSSM), as well its extension containing an additional chiral singlet superfield, the so-called next-to-minimal or nonminimal supersymmetric standard model~(NMSSM).We consider the case of MSSM with both universal as well as nonuniversal gaugino masses at the grand unified scale, and find that only an $E_6$ grand unified model with unnaturally large representation can give rise to sufficiently light neutralinos which can possibly lead to the invisible decay $h^0 \rightarrow \tilde χ_1^0 \tilde χ_1^0$. Following this, we consider the case of NMSSM in detail, where also we find that it is not possible to have the invisible decay of the lightest Higgs scalar with universal gaugino masses at the grand unified scale. We delineate the regions of the NMSSM parameter space where it is possible to have the lightest Higgs boson to have a mass of about $126$ GeV, and then concentrate on the region where this Higgs can decay into light neutralinos, with the soft gaugino masses $M_1$ and $M_2$ as two independent parameters, unconstrained by grand unification. We also consider, simultaneously, the other important invisible Higgs decay channel in the NMSSM, namely the decay into the lightest CP odd scalars, $h_1 \to a_1 a_1$, which is studied in detail. With the invisible Higgs branching ratio being constrained by the present LHC results, we find that $μ_{eff} < 170$~GeV and $M_1 < 80$~GeV is disfavored in NMSSM for fixed values of the other input parameters. The dependence of our results on the parameters of NMSSM is discussed in detail.

Probing the indefinite CP nature of the Higgs Boson through decay distributions in the process $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}Φ$

The recently discovered scalar resonance at the LHC is now almost confirmed to be a Higgs Boson, whose CP properties are yet to be established. At the ILC with and without polarized beams, it may be possible to probe these properties at high precision. In this work, we study the possibility of probing departures from the pure CP-even case, by using the decay distributions in the process $e^+ e^- \to t \bar{t} Φ$, with $Φ$ mainly decaying into a $b\bar b$ pair. We have compared the case of a minimal extension of the SM case (Model I) with an additional pseudoscalar degree of freedom, with a more realistic case namely the CP-violating Two-Higgs Doublet Model (Model II) that permits a more general description of the couplings. We have considered the ILC with $\sqrt{s}=800$\,GeV and integrated luminosity of $300\, {\rm fb}^{-1}$. Our main findings are that even in the case of small departures from the CP-even case, the decay distributions are sensitive to the presence of a CP-odd component in Model II, while it is difficult to probe these departures in Model I unless the pseudoscalar component is very large. Noting that the proposed degrees of beam polarization increases the statistics, the process demonstrates the effective role of beam polarization in studies beyond the Standard Model. Further, our study shows that an indefinite CP Higgs would be a sensitive laboratory to physics beyond the SM.
