Bulk properties of van-der-Waals hard ferromagnet VI3

We present comprehensive measurements of the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of layered van-der-Waals ferromagnet VI$_3$ down to low temperatures. Despite belonging to a well studied family of transition metal trihalides, this material has received very little attention. We outline, from high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction measurements, a corrected room-temperature crystal structure to that previously proposed and uncover a structural transition at 79 K, also seen in the heat capacity. Magnetization measurements confirm VI$_3$ to be a hard ferromagnet (9.1 kOe coercive field at 2 K) with a high degree of anisotropy, and the pressure dependence of the magnetic properties provide evidence for the two-dimensional nature of the magnetic order. Optical and electrical transport measurements show this material to be an insulator with an optical band gap of 0.67 eV - the previous theoretical predictions of d-band metallicity then lead us to believe VI$_3$ to be a correlated Mott insulator. Our latest band structure calculations support this picture and show good agreement with the experimental data. We suggest VI$_3$ to host great potential in the thriving field of low-dimensional magnetism and functional materials, together with opportunities to study and make use of low-dimensional Mott physics.

Orbital-selective confinement effect of Ru $4d$ orbitals in SrRuO$_3$ ultrathin film

The electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin film with thickness from 50 to 1 unit cell (u.c.) is investigated via the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique at the O K-edge to unravel the intriguing interplay of orbital and charge degrees of freedom. We found that orbital-selective quantum confinement effect (QCE) induces the splitting of Ru $4d$ orbitals. At the same time, we observed a clear suppression of the electron-hole continuum across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) occurring at the 4 u.c. sample. From these two clear observations we conclude that QCE gives rise to a Mott insulating phase in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ films. Our interpretation of the RIXS spectra is supported by the configuration interaction calculations of RuO$_6$ clusters.

Magnetic Excitations in Non-Collinear Antiferromagnetic Weyl Semimetal $\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$

$\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ has recently attracted considerable attention as a magnetic Weyl semimetal exhibiting concomitant transport anomalies at room temperature. The topology of the electronic bands, their relation to the magnetic ground state and their nonzero Berry curvature lie at the heart of the problem. The examination of the full magnetic Hamiltonian reveals otherwise hidden aspects of these unusual physical properties. Here, we report the full spin wave spectra of $\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ measured over a wide momentum - energy range by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. Using a linear spin wave theory, we determine a suitable magnetic Hamiltonian which not only explains the experimental results but also stabilizes the low-temperature helical phase, consistent with our DFT calculations. The effect of this helical ordering on topological band structures is further examined using a tight-binding method, which confirms the elimination of Weyl points in the helical phase. Our work provides a rare example of the intimate coupling between the electronic and spin degrees of freedom for a magnetic Weyl semimetal system.

Magnetic excitations in bulk multiferroic two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet (Lu,Sc)FeO$_3$

Non-collinear two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnets (2D TLAF) are currently an area of very active research due to their unique magnetic properties, which lead to non-trivial quantum effects that experimentally manifest themselves in the spin excitation spectra. Recent examples of such insulating 2D TLAF include (Y,Lu)MnO$_3$, LiCrO$_2$, and CuCrO$_2$. Hexagonal LuFeO3 is a recently synthesized 2D TLAF which exhibits properties of an ideal multiferroic material, partially because of the high spin ($S=5/2$) and strong magnetic super-exchange interactions. We report the full range of spin dynamics in a bulk single crystal of (Lu$_{0.6}$Sc$_{0.4}$)FeO$_3$ (Sc doping to stabilize the hexagonal structure) measured via time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. Modeling with linear spin wave theory yields a nearest neighbor exchange coupling of $J$ = 4.0(2) meV (DFT calculations for $h$-LuFeO$_3$ predicted a value of 6.31 meV) and anisotropy values of $K_D$ = 0.17(1) meV (easy plane) and $K_A$~=~-0.05(1)~meV (local easy axis). It is observed that the magnon bandwidth of the spin wave spectra is twice as large for $h$-(Lu,Sc)FeO$_3$ as it is for $h$-LuMnO$_3$.

Structural investigation of the insulator-metal transition in NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ compounds

We report on a combined measurement of high-resolution x-ray diffraction on powder and Raman scattering on single crystalline NiS2-xSex samples that exhibit the insulator-metal transition with Se doping. Via x-rays, an abrupt change in the bond length between Ni and S (Se) ions was observed at the transition temperature, in sharp contrast to the almost constant bond length between chalcogen ions. Raman scattering, a complementary technique with the unique sensitivity to the vibrations of chalcogen bonds, revealed no anomalies in the phonon spectrum, consistent with the x-ray diffraction results. This indicates the important role of the interaction between Ni and S (Se) in the insulator-metal transition. The potential implication of this interpretation is discussed in terms of current theoretical models.

Emergence of a Metal-Insulator Transition and High Temperature Charge Density Waves in VSe2 at the Monolayer Limit

Emergent phenomena driven by electronic reconstructions in oxide heterostructures have been intensively discussed. However, the role of these phenomena in shaping the electronic properties in van der Waals heterointerfaces has hitherto not been established. By reducing the material thickness and forming a heterointerface, we find two types of charge-ordering transitions in monolayer VSe2 on graphene substrates. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) uncovers that Fermi-surface nesting becomes perfect in ML VSe2. Renormalization group analysis confirms that imperfect nesting in three dimensions universally flows into perfect nesting in two dimensions. As a result, the charge density wave transition temperature is dramatically enhanced to a value of 350 K compared to the 105 K in bulk VSe2. More interestingly, ARPES and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements confirm an unexpected metal-insulator transition at 135 K, driven by lattice distortions. The heterointerface plays an important role in driving this novel metal-insulator transition in the family of monolayered transition metal dichalcogenides.

Unconventional anomalous Hall effect from antiferromagnetic domain walls of Nd2Ir2O7 thin films

Ferroic domain walls (DWs) create different symmetries and ordered states compared with those in single-domain bulk materials. In particular, the DWs of an antiferromagnet (AFM) with non-coplanar spin structure have a distinct symmetry that cannot be realized in those of their ferromagnet counterparts. In this paper, we show that an unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) can arise from the DWs of a non-coplanar AFM, Nd2Ir2O7. Bulk Nd2Ir2O7 has a cubic symmetry; thus, its Hall signal should be zero without an applied magnetic field. The DWs generated in this material break the two-fold rotational symmetry, which allows for finite anomalous Hall conductivity. A strong f-d exchange interaction between the Nd and Ir magnetic moments significantly influences antiferromagnetic domain switching. Our epitaxial Nd2Ir2O7 thin film showed a large enhancement of the AHE signal when the AFM domains switched, indicating that the AHE is mainly due to DWs. Our study highlights the symmetry broken interface of AFM materials as a new means of exploring topological effects and their relevant applications.

Renormalization of spin excitations in hexagonal HoMnO3 by magnon-phonon coupling

Hexagonal HoMnO3, a two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet, has been studied via inelastic neutron scattering. A simple Heisenberg model with a single-ion anisotropy describes most features of the spin-wave dispersion curves. However, there is shown to be a renormalization of the magnon energies located at around 11 meV. Since both the magnon-magnon interaction and magnon-phonon coupling can affect the renormalization in a noncollinear magnet, we have accounted for both of these couplings by using a Heisenberg XXZ model with 1=S expansions [1] and the Einstein site phonon model [13], respectively. This quantitative analysis leads to the conclusion that the renormalization effect primarily originates from the magnon-phonon coupling, while the spontaneous magnon decay due to the magnon-magnon interaction is suppressed by strong two-ion anisotropy.

Low-energy spin dynamics of orthoferrites AFeO$_3$ (A = Y, La, Bi)

YFeO$_3$ and LaFeO$_3$ are members of the rare-earth orthoferrites family with \textit{Pbnm} space group. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the low-energy spin excitations have been measured around magnetic Brillouin zone center. Splitting of magnon branches and non-zero magnon gap is observed for both compounds, which is similar to the behavior observed in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Spin wave calculations which include both Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions and single-ion anisotropy in the spin-Hamiltonian comprehensively accounts for all the experimentally observed features. Our results offer insight into the unifying physics underlying the Fe$^{3+}$-based perovskites as well as their distinguishing characteristics.

Magnetic interactions in PdCrO$_2$ and their effects on its magnetic structure

We report a neutron scattering study of the metallic triangular lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$. Powder neutron diffraction measurements confirm that the crystalline space group symmetry remains $R\bar{3}m$ below $T_N$. This implies that magnetic interactions consistent with the crystal symmetry do not stabilise the non-coplanar magnetic structure which was one of two structures previously proposed on the basis of single crystal neutron diffraction measurements. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements find two gaps at low energies which can be explained as arising from a dipolar-type exchange interaction. This symmetric anisotropic interaction also stabilises a magnetic structure very similar to the coplanar magnetic structure which was also suggested by the single crystal diffraction study. The higher energy magnon dispersion can be modelled by linear spin wave theory with exchange interactions up to sixth nearest-neighbors, but discrepancies remain which hint at additional effects unexplained by the linear theory.

Symmetry breaking and unconventional charge ordering in single crystal Na$_{2.7}$Ru$_4$O$_9$

The interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in matter leads to various forms of ordered states through phase transitions. An important subclass of these phenomena of complex materials is charge ordering (CO), mainly driven by mixed-valence states. We discovered by combining the results of electrical resistivity ($ρ$), specific heat, susceptibility $χ$ (\textit{T}), and single crystal x-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) that Na$_{2.7}$Ru$_4$O$_9$ with the monoclinic tunnel type lattice (space group $C$2/$m$) exhibits an unconventional CO at room temperature while retaining metallicity. The temperature-dependent SC-XRD results show successive phase transitions with super-lattice reflections at \textbf{q}$_1$=(0, $\frac{1}{2}$, 0) and \textbf{q}$_2$=(0, $\frac{1}{3}$, $\frac{1}{3}$) below $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ (365 K) and only at \textbf{q}$_1$=(0, $\frac{1}{2}$, 0) between $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ and $T_{\textrm{C1}}$ (630 K). We interpreted these as an evidence for the formation of an unconventional CO. It reveals a strong first-order phase transition in the electrical resistivity at $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ (cooling) = 345 K and $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ (heating) = 365 K. We argue that the origin of the phase transition is due to the localized 4$d$ Ru-electrons. The results of our finding reveal an unique example of Ru$^{3+}$/Ru$^{4+}$ mixed valance heavy \textit{d}$^4$ ions.

Magnetic excitations of the Cu$^{2+}$ quantum spin chain in Sr$_3$CuPtO$_6$

We report the magnetic excitation spectrum as measured by inelastic neutron scattering for a polycrystalline sample of Sr$_3$CuPtO$_6$. Modeling the data by the 2+4 spinon contributions to the dynamical susceptibility within the chains, and with interchain coupling treated in the random phase approximation, accounts for the major features of the powder-averaged structure factor. The magnetic excitations broaden considerably as temperature is raised, persisting up to above 100 K and displaying a broad transition as previously seen in the susceptibility data. No spin gap is observed in the dispersive spin excitations at low momentum transfer, which is consistent with the gapless spinon continuum expected from the coordinate Bethe ansatz. However, the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum gives evidence of some very weak interchain coupling.

Giant thermal hysteresis in Verwey transition of single domain Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Most interesting phenomena of condensed matter physics originate from interactions among different degrees of freedom, making it a very intriguing yet challenging question how certain ground states emerge from only a limited number of atoms in assembly. This is especially the case for strongly correlated electron systems with overwhelming complexity. The Verwey transition of Fe3O4 is a classic example of this category, of which the origin is still elusive 80 years after the first report. Here we report, for the first time, that the Verwey transition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibits size-dependent thermal hysteresis in magnetization, 57Fe NMR, and XRD measurements. The hysteresis width passes a maximum of 11 K when the size is 120 nm while dropping to only 1 K for the bulk sample. This behavior is very similar to that of magnetic coercivity and the critical sizes of the hysteresis and the magnetic single domain are identical. We interpret it as a manifestation of charge ordering and spin ordering correlation in a single domain. This work paves a new way of undertaking researches in the vibrant field of strongly correlated electron physics combined with nanoscience.

Studies on the high-temperature ferroelectric transition of multiferroic hexagonal manganite RMnO3

Hexagonal manganites are multiferroic materials with two highly-dissimilar phase transitions: a ferroelectric transition (from P63/mmc to P63cm) at a temperature higher than 1000 K and an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=65 - 130 K. Despite its critical relevance to the intriguing ferroelectric domain physics, the details of the ferroelectric transition are yet not well known to date primarily because of the ultra-high transition temperature. Using high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments, we show that the ferroelectric transition is a single transition of abrupt order and R-Op displacement is the primary order parameter. This structural transition is then simultaneously accompanied by MnO5 tilting and the subsequent development of electric polarization.

Topological magnon bands in the zigzag and stripy phases of antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice

We investigated the topological property of magnon bands in the collinear magnetic orders of zigzag and stripy phases for the antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice and identified Berry curvature and symmetry constraints on the magnon band structure. Different symmetries of both zigzag and stripy phases lead to different topological properties, in particular, the magnon bands of the stripy phase being disentangled with a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) term with non-zero spin Chern number. This is corroborated by calculating the spin Nernst effect. Our study establishes the existence of the non-trivial magnon band topology for all observed collinear antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice in the presence of the DM term.

Frustrated antiferromagnetic honeycomb-tunnel-like lattice CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu)

New frustrated antiferromagnetic compounds CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) have been investigated using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. These systems show different magnetic lattices depending on rare-earth element. The nonmagnetic Eu compound is a S=1/2 two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnetic lattice oriented in the ac plane with geometrical frustration. On the other hand, the Pr, Nd, and Sm compounds show a three-dimensional honeycomb-tunnel-like lattice made of RE^3+ running along the a axis with the characteristic behavior of frustrated antiferromagnets.

Zero-Field Ambient-Pressure Quantum Criticality in the Stoichiometric Non-Fermi Liquid System CeRhBi

The strange electronic state of a class of materials which violates the predictions of conventional Fermi-liquid theory of metals remains enigmatic. Proximity to a quantum critical point is a possible origin of this non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, which is usually accomplished by tuning the ground state with non-thermal control parameters such as chemical composition, magnetic field or pressure. We present the spin dynamics study of a stoichiometric NFL system CeRhBi, using low-energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements. It shows evidence for an energy-temperature (E/T) scaling in the INS dynamic response and a time-field scaling of the muSR asymmetry function indicating a quantum critical behavior in this compound. The E/T scaling reveals a local character of quantum criticality consistent with the power-law divergence of the magnetic susceptibility, logarithmic divergence of the magnetic heat capacity and T-linear resistivity at low temperature. The NFL behavior and local criticality occur over a very wide dynamical range at zero field and ambient pressure without any tuning in this stoichiometric heavy fermion compound is striking, making CeRhBi an exemplary model system amenable to in-depth studies for quantum criticality.

Heat transport study of the spin liquid candidate 1T-TaS2

We present the ultra-low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of the prototypical charge-density-wave material 1$T$-TaS$_2$, which was recently argued to be a candidate for quantum spin liquid. Our experiments show that the residual linear term of thermal conductivity at zero field is essentially zero, within the experimental accuracy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity is found to be insensitive to the magnetic field up to 9 T. These results clearly demonstrate the absence of itinerant magnetic excitations with fermionic statistics in bulk 1$T$-TaS$_2$ and, thus, put a strong constraint on the theories of the ground state of this material.
