A Lorentz-Violating Alternative to Higgs Mechanism?

We consider a four-dimensional field-theory model with two massless fermions, coupled to an Abelian vector field without flavour mixing, and to another Abelian vector field with flavour mixing. Both Abelian vectors have a Lorentz-violating kinetic term, introducing a Lorentz-violation mass scale $M$, from which fermions and the flavour-mixing vector get their dynamical masses, whereas the vector coupled without flavour mixing remains massless. When the two coupling constants have similar values in order of magnitude, a mass hierarchy pattern emerges, in which one fermion is very light compared to the other, whilst the vector mass is larger than the mass of the heavy fermion. The work presented here may be considered as a Lorentz-symmetry-Violating alternative to the Higgs mechanism, in the sense that no scalar particle (fundamental or composite) is necessary for the generation of the vector-meson mass. However, the model is not realistic given that, as a result of Lorentz Violation, the maximal (light-cone) speed seen by the fermions is smaller than that of the massless gauge boson (which equals the speed of light in vacuo) by an amount which is unacceptably large to be compatible with the current tests of Lorentz Invariance, unless the gauge couplings assume unnaturally small values. Possible ways out of this phenomenological drawback are briefly discussed, postponing a detailed construction of more realistic models for future work.

Mass Hierarchies in Lorentz-Violation-induced Dynamical Mass Models

We discuss the issue of fermion mass hierarchies between lepton and quark families in toy models of dynamical generation of fermion masses through minimal Lorentz Invariance Violation. Realistic hierarchies in chiral theories necessitate an extended gauge structure, which includes both vector and axial-vector interactions.

Spherically symmetric solutions in Covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the most general case of spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the framework of the Covariant Horava Lifshitz Gravity, for an action that includes all possible higher order terms in curvature which are compatible with power-counting normalizability requirement. We find that solutions can be separated into two main classes: (i) solutions with nonzero radial shift function, and (ii) solutions with zero radial shift function. In the case (ii), spherically symmetric solutions are consistent with observations if we adopt the view of Horava and Melby-Tomson, according to which the auxiliary field A can be considered as a part of an effective general relativistic metric, which is valid only in the IR limit. On the other hand, in the case (i), consistency with observations implies that the field A should be independent of the spacetime geometry, as the Newtonian potential arises from the nonzero radial shift function. Also, our aim in this paper is to discuss and compare these two alternative but different assumptions for the auxiliary field A.

Do Three Dimensions tell us Anything about a Theory of Everything?

It has been conjectured that four-dimensional N=8 supergravity may provide a suitable framework for a `Theory of Everything', if its composite SU(8) gauge fields become dynamical. We point out that supersymmetric three-dimensional coset field theories motivated by lattice models provide toy laboratories for aspects of this conjecture. They feature dynamical composite supermultiplets made of constituent holons and spinons. We show how these models may be extended to include N=1 and N=2 supersymmetry, enabling dynamical conjectures to be verified more rigorously. We point out some special features of these three-dimensional models, and mention open questions about their relevance to the dynamics of N=8 supergravity.

Inflaton in R-dependent potential

We consider a non-minimally coupled inflaton, in a higher order curvature background, leading to a potential which evolves with the curvature scalar of the Universe, and which describes two regimes. The first one is a de Sitter phase, where the potential is static, and an exact exponential solution is found for the inflaton. The second regime, triggered by the inflaton reaching a threshold, leads to a power-law expansion, during which the potential becomes flat, quickly enough for the inflaton never to reach the minimum of the initial symmetry breaking potential. This scenario is an alternative to the inflaton oscillating about a minimum of the potential, and where preheating is a consequence of the flattening of the potential during the power-law expanding phase.

Comments on branon dressing and the Standard Model

This technical note shows how Electrodynamics and a Yukawa model are dressed after integrating out perturbative brane fluctuations, and it is found that first order corrections in the inverse of the brane tension occur for the fermion and scalar wave functions, the couplings and the masses. Nevertheless, field redefinitions actually lead to effective actions where only masses are dressed to this first order. We compare our results with the literature and find discrepancies at the next order, which, however, might not be measurable in the valid regime of low-energy brane fluctuations.

Branon stabilization from fermion-induced radiative corrections

We consider a 3-brane embedded in 5-dimensional space time characterized by a Gaussian warp factor, for which the four-dimensional effective theory for brane fluctuation (branons) is unstable. We show that radiative corrections arising from fermions living on the brane, and therefore coupled to branons, stabilize the system by generating dynamically a spontaneous symmetry breaking for the branon field. The price to pay, for the corresponding mechanism to be consistent, is to have a large number of fermion flavours, and we discuss the fat brane scenario as an interpretation for the dressed branon theory, taking into account the Maxwell construction, which avoids the spinodal instability present in the perturbative effective potential.

Tachyon-Dilaton-induced Inflation as an alpha'-resummed String Background

Within the framework of a novel functional method on the world-sheet of the string, we discuss simple but re-summed (in the Regge slope) inflationary scenarios in the context of closed Bosonic strings, living in four target-space dimensions, in the presence of non-trivial tachyon, dilaton and graviton cosmological backgrounds. The inflationary solutions are argued to guarantee the vanishing of the corresponding Weyl anomaly coefficients in a given world-sheet renormalization scheme, thereby ensuring conformal invariance of the corresponding sigma-model to all orders in the Regge slope. The key property is the requirement of "homogeneity" of the corresponding Weyl anomaly coefficients. Inflation entails appropriate relations between the dilaton and tachyon field configurations, whose form can lead to either a de Sitter vacuum, incompatible though (due to the cosmic horizons) with the perturbative string scattering amplitudes, or to cosmic space-times involving brief inflationary periods, interpolating smoothly between power-law and/or Minkowski Universes. The latter situation is characterized by well-defined scattering amplitudes, and is thus compatible with a perturbative string framework. It is this scenario that we consider a self-consistent ground state in our framework, which is based on local field redefinitions of background fields.

Non-perturbative time-dependent String Backgrounds and Axion-induced Optical Activity

Conformal invariance for bosonic strings in time-dependent backgrounds of graviton, dilaton and Kalb-Ramond field is obtained by imposing Weyl-beta functions to be homogeneous in time, to all orders in $α^{'}$. This construction is possible in any target space dimension, as a result of the non-trivial background configurations. The electromagnetic effects of the antisymmetric tensor field, when coupled to an Abelian (electromagnetic) gauge field, are discussed in the framework of a four-dimensional Minkowski Universe, for concreteness. Non-trivial optical activity is demonstrated, which constitutes a way of detecting string-inspired axion/dilaton effects in such models.

A misleading Wilsonian fixed point

We exhibit here, for a scalar theory, an apparently non-trivial Wilsonian fixed point, which surprisingly describes a free theory. This modest note is an observation which can be of interest in the framework of functional methods in Quantum Field Theory.

Path integral quantization of scalar fluctuations above a kink

We quantize scalar fluctuations in 1+1 dimensions above a classical background kink. The properties of the effective action for the corresponding classical field are studied with an exact functional method, alternative to exact Wilsonian renormalization, where the running parameter is a bare mass, and the regulator of the quantum theory is fixed. We extend this approach, in an appendix, to a Yukawa interaction in higher dimension.

A new non-perturbative time-dependent string configuration

A time-dependent bosonic string configuration is discussed, in graviton and dilaton backgrounds, leading to Weyl-symmetry beta-functions which are homogeneous in X^0, to any order in alpha'. As a consequence, a string reparametrization can always be implemented, such that beta functions can be cancelled, to any order in alpha'. This non-perturbative conformal invariance is valid for any target space dimension, and leads to a power law expanding Universe, for which the power vanishes if a specific relation between the dimension and dilaton amplitude holds. Finally, D=4 is the minimum dimension (in the case of a spherical world sheet) for which this configuration is consistent with a Wick rotation in a Minkowski target space.

Antisymmetric-Tensor and Electromagnetic effects in an alpha'-non-perturbative Four-Dimensional String Cosmology

Starting from an exact (in the Regge slope alpha') functional method for a bosonic stringy sigma-model, we investigate four-dimensional cosmological string solutions in graviton, dilaton and antisymmetric tensor backgrounds, compatible with world-sheet conformal invariance, and valid beyond perturbative expansions in powers of alpha'. The antisymmetric tensor field, playing the role of an axion in the four-dimensional target space time, leads to spatial anisotropies of the emergent Robertson-Walker expanding Universe, and, upon coupling the system to the electromagnetic field, it results in non-trivial optical activity. Some estimates of the corresponding effects are made and their relevance to current cosmology is briefly discussed.

Can strings live in four dimensions?

Using a novel, non-perturbative, time-dependent string configuration derived in [1], we present here an argument which selects new critical dimensions for the target space time of a bosonic sigma model, with D=4 the lowest non trivial value. This argument is based on the properties of the partition function after a target space Wick rotation.

String cosmology from a novel renormalization perspective

We study small perturbations around the exactly marginal time-dependent string configuration of [1], and demonstrate the lack of the appropriate linearization. This implies that this configuration is an isolated fixed point of the $α^{'}$ flow in the pertinent space of theories.

An Alternative to Exact Renormalization and Cosmological Solutions in String Theory

In this work we review the application of a functional method, serving as an alternative to the Wilsonian Exact Renormalization approach, to stringy bosonic $σ$-models with metric and dilaton backgrounds on a spherical world sheet [1]. We derive an exact evolution equation for the dilaton with the amplitude of quantum fluctuations, driven by the kinetic term of the two-dimensional world-sheet theory. The linear dilaton conformal field theory, corresponding to a linearly (in cosmic Einstein-frame time) expanding Universe, appears as a trivial fixed point of this equation. With the help of conformal-invariance conditions, we find a logarithmic dilaton as another, exact and non trivial, fixed-point solution. Cosmological implications of our solutions are briefly discussed, in particular the transition (exit) from the expanding Universe of the linear dilaton to the Minkowski vacuum, corresponding to the non-trivial fixed point of our generalised flow. This novel renormalization-group method may therefore offer new insights into exact properties of string theories of physical significance.

Non-Perturbative Formulation of Non-Critical String Models

We apply to non-critical bosonic Liouville string models, characterized by a central-charge deficit Q, a new non-perturbative renormalization-group technique based on a functional method for controlling the quantum fluctuations. We demonstrate the existence of a renormalization-group fixed point of Liouville string theory as Q to 0, in which limit the target space-time is Minkowski and the dynamics of the Liouville field is trivial, as it neither propagates nor interacts. This calculation supports in a non-trival manner the identification of the zero mode of the Liouville field with the target time variable, up to a crucial minus sign.
