On Abelianity Lines in Elliptic $W$-Algebras

We present a systematic derivation of the abelianity conditions for the $q$-deformed $W$-algebras constructed from the elliptic quantum algebra $\mathcal{A}_{q,p}\big(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(N)_{c}\big)$. We identify two sets of conditions on a given critical surface yielding abelianity lines in the moduli space ($p, q, c$). Each line is identified as an intersection of a countable number of critical surfaces obeying diophantine consistency conditions. The corresponding Poisson brackets structures are then computed for which some universal features are described.

From Hamiltonian to zero curvature formulation for classical integrable boundary conditions

We reconcile the Hamiltonian formalism and the zero curvature representation in the approach to integrable boundary conditions for a classical integrable system in 1+1 space-time dimensions. We start from an ultralocal Poisson algebra involving a Lax matrix and two (dynamical) boundary matrices. Sklyanin's formula for the double-row transfer matrix is used to derive Hamilton's equations of motion for both the Lax matrix {\bf and} the boundary matrices in the form of zero curvature equations. A key ingredient of the method is a boundary version of the Semenov-Tian-Shansky formula for the generating function of the time-part of a Lax pair. The procedure is illustrated on the finite Toda chain for which we derive Lax pairs of size $2\times 2$ for previously known Hamiltonians of type $BC_N$ and $D_N$ corresponding to constant and dynamical boundary matrices respectively.

On the origin of dual Lax pairs and their $r$-matrix structure

We establish the algebraic origin of the following observations made previously by the authors and coworkers: (i) A given integrable PDE in $1+1$ dimensions within the Zakharov-Shabat scheme related to a Lax pair can be cast in two distinct, dual Hamiltonian formulations; (ii) Associated to each formulation is a Poisson bracket and a phase space (which are not compatible in the sense of Magri); (iii) Each matrix in the Lax pair satisfies a linear Poisson algebra a la Sklyanin characterized by the {\it same} classical $r$ matrix. We develop the general concept of dual Lax pairs and dual Hamiltonian formulation of an integrable field theory. We elucidate the origin of the common $r$-matrix structure by tracing it back to a single Lie-Poisson bracket on a suitable coadjoint orbit of the loop algebra ${\rm sl}(2,\CC) \otimes \CC (λ, λ^{-1})$. The results are illustrated with the examples of the nonlinear Schrödinger and Gerdjikov-Ivanov hierarchies.

Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures in an integrable hierarchy and space-time duality

We define and illustrate the novel notion of dual integrable hierarchies, on the example of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy. For each integrable nonlinear evolution equation (NLEE) in the hierarchy, dual integrable structures are characterized by the fact that the zero-curvature representation of the NLEE can be realized by two Hamiltonian formulations stemming from two distinct choices of the configuration space, yielding two inequivalent Poisson structures on the corresponding phase space and two distinct Hamiltonians. This is fundamentally different from the standard bi-Hamiltonian or generally multitime structure. The first formulation chooses purely space-dependent fields as configuration space; it yields the standard Poisson structure for NLS. The other one is new: it chooses purely time-dependent fields as configuration space and yields a different Poisson structure at each level of the hierarchy. The corresponding NLEE becomes a {\it space} evolution equation. We emphasize the role of the Lagrangian formulation as a unifying framework for deriving both Poisson structures, using ideas from covariant field theory. One of our main results is to show that the two matrices of the Lax pair satisfy the same form of ultralocal Poisson algebra (up to a sign) characterized by an $r$-matrix structure, whereas traditionally only one of them is involved in the classical $r$-matrix method. We construct explicit dual hierarchies of Hamiltonians, and Lax representations of the triggered dynamics, from the monodromy matrices of either Lax matrix. An appealing procedure to build a multi-dimensional lattice of Lax pair, through successive uses of the dual Poisson structures, is briefly introduced.

Scattering in Twisted Yangians

We study the bulk and boundary scattering of the sl(N) twisted Yangian spin chain via the solution of the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit. Explicit expressions for the scattering amplitudes are obtained and the factorization of the bulk scattering is shown. The issue of defects in twisted Yangians is also briefly discussed.

The sl(N) twisted Yangian: bulk-boundary scattering & defects

We consider the sl(N) twisted Yangian quantum spin chain. In particular, we study the bulk and boundary scattering of the model via the solution of the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit. Local defects are also implemented in the model and the associated transmission amplitudes are derived through the relevant Bethe ansatz equations.

Scattering matrices in the sl(3) twisted Yangian

A quantum spin chain with non-conventional boundary conditions is studied. The distinct nature of these boundary conditions arises from the conversion of a soliton to an anti-soliton after being reflected to the boundary, hence the appellation soliton non-preserving boundary conditions. We focus on the simplest non-trivial case of this class of models based on the twisted Yangian quadratic algebra. Our computations are performed through the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit. We formulate a suitable quantization condition describing the scattering process and proceed with explicitly determining the bulk and boundary scattering amplitudes. The energy and quantum numbers of the low lying excitations are also derived.

Did the ever dead outnumber the living and when? A birth-and-death approach

This paper is an attempt to formalize analytically the question raised in "World Population Explained: Do Dead People Outnumber Living, Or Vice Versa?" Huffington Post, \cite{HJ}. We start developing simple deterministic Malthusian growth models of the problem (with birth and death rates either constant or time-dependent) before running into both linear birth and death Markov chain models and age-structured models.

On the spread of a branching Brownian motion whose offspring number has infinite variance

We study the impact on shape parameters of an underlying Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process (height, width and first hitting time), of having a non-spatial branching mechanism with infinite variance. Aiming at providing a comparative study of the spread of an epidemics whose dynamics is given by the modulus of a branching Brownian motion (BBM) we then consider spatial branching processes in dimension d, not necessarily integer. The underlying branching mechanism is then either a binary branching model or one presenting infinite variance. In particular we evaluate the chance p(x) of being hit if the epidemics started away at distance x. We compute the large x tail probabilities of this event, both when the branching mechanism is regular and when it exhibits very large fluctuations.

Quantization and dynamisation of Trace-Poisson brackets

The quantization problem for the trace-bracket algebra, derived from double Poisson brackets, is discussed. We obtain a generalization of the boundary YBE (or so-called ABCD-algebra) for the quantization of quadratic trace-brackets. A dynamical deformation is proposed on the lines of Gervais-Neveu-Felder dynamical quantum algebras.

Temperley-Lieb R-matrices from generalized Hadamard matrices

New sets of rank n-representations of Temperley-Lieb algebra TL_N(q) are constructed. They are characterized by two matrices obeying a generalization of the complex Hadamard property. Partial classifications for the two matrices are given, in particular when they reduce to Fourier or Butson matrices.

The sine-Gordon model in the presence of defects

The sine-Gordon model in the presence of dynamical integrable defects is investigated. This is an application of the algebraic formulation introduced for integrable defects in earlier works. The quantities in involution as well as the associated Lax pairs are explicitly extracted. Integrability i also shown using certain sewing constraints, which emerge as suitable continuity conditions.

The sine-Gordon model with integrable defects revisited

Application of our algebraic approach to Liouville integrable defects is proposed for the sine-Gordon model. Integrability of the model is ensured by the underlying classical r-matrix algebra. The first local integrals of motion are identified together with the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions imposed on the time components of the entailed Lax pairs give rise to the sewing conditions on the defect point consistent with Liouville integrability.

Classification of Non-Affine Non-Hecke Dynamical R-Matrices

A complete classification of non-affine dynamical quantum $R$-matrices obeying the ${\mathcal G}l_n({\mathbb C})$-Gervais-Neveu-Felder equation is obtained without assuming either Hecke or weak Hecke conditions. More general dynamical dependences are observed. It is shown that any solution is built upon elementary blocks, which individually satisfy the weak Hecke condition. Each solution is in particular characterized by an arbitrary partition ${{\mathbb I}(i), i\in{1,...,n}}$ of the set of indices ${1,...,n}$ into classes, ${\mathbb I}(i)$ being the class of the index $i$, and an arbitrary family of signs $(ε_{\mathbb I})_{{\mathbb I}\in{{\mathbb I}(i), i\in{1,...,n}}}$ on this partition. The weak Hecke-type $R$-matrices exhibit the analytical behaviour $R_{ij,ji}=f(ε_{{\mathbb I}(i)}Λ_{{\mathbb I}(i)}-ε_{{\mathbb I}(j)}Λ_{{\mathbb I}(j)})$, where $f$ is a particular trigonometric or rational function, $Λ_{{\mathbb I}(i)}=\sum\limits_{j\in{\mathbb I}(i)}λ_j$, and $(λ_i)_{i\in{1,...,n}}$ denotes the family of dynamical coordinates.

Liouville integrable defects: the non-linear Schrodinger paradigm

A systematic approach to Liouville integrable defects is proposed, based on an underlying Poisson algebraic structure. The non-linear Schrodinger model in the presence of a single particle-like defect is investigated through this algebraic approach. Local integrals of motions are constructed as well as the time components of the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions imposed upon the time components of the Lax pair to all orders give rise to sewing conditions, which turn out to be compatible with the hierarchy of charges in involution. Coincidence of our results with the continuum limit of the discrete expressions obtained in earlier works further confirms our approach.
