Nonlinear Roth type theorems in finite fields

We obtain smoothing estimates for certain nonlinear convolution operators on prime fields, leading to quantitative nonlinear Roth type theorems. Compared with the usual linear setting (i.e. arithmetic progressions), the nonlinear nature of the operators leads to different phenomena, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

On quadratic irrationals with bounded partial quotients

It is shown that for some explicit constants $c>0, A>0$, the asymptotic for the number of positive non-square discriminants $D<x$ with fundamental solution $\varepsilon_D< x^{\frac 12+α}, 0<α<c$, remains preserved if we require moreover $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ to contain an irrational with partial quotients bounded by $A$.

Sidonicity and variants of Kaczmarz's problem

We prove that a uniformly bounded system of orthonormal functions satisfying the $ψ_2$ condition: (1) must contain a Sidon subsystem of proportional size, (2) must satisfy the Rademacher-Sidon property, and (3) must have its 5-fold tensor satisfy the Sidon property. On the other hand, we construct a uniformly bounded orthonormal system that satisfies the $ψ_2$ condition but which is not Sidon. These problems are variants of Kaczmarz's Scottish book problem (problem 130) which, in its original formulation, was answered negatively by Rudin. A corollary of our argument is a new, elementary proof of Pisier's theorem that a set of characters satisfying the $ψ_2$ condition is Sidon.

Spatial statistics for lattice points on the sphere I: Individual results

We study the spatial distribution of point sets on the sphere obtained from the representation of a large integer as a sum of three integer squares. We examine several statistics of these point sets, such as the electrostatic potential, Ripley's function, the variance of the number of points in random spherical caps, and the covering radius. Some of the results are conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.

Beyond Expansion II: Low-Lying Fundamental Geodesics

A closed geodesic on the modular surface is "low-lying" if it does not travel "high" into the cusp. It is "fundamental" if it corresponds to an element in the class group of a real quadratic field. We prove the existence of infinitely many low-lying fundamental geodesics, answering a question of Einsiedler-Lindenstrauss-Michel-Venkatesh.

On pair correlation for generic diagonal forms

We establish new pair correlation results for certain generic homogenous diagonal forms evaluated on the integers. Methods are analytic leading to explicit quantitative statements.

Decoupling, exponential sums and the Riemann zeta function

We establish a new decoupling inequality for curves in the spirit of [B-D1], [B-D2] which implies a new mean value theorem for certain exponential sums crucial to the Bombieri-Iwaniec method as developed further in [H]. In particular, this leads to an improved bound $|ζ(\frac 12+it)|\ll t^{53/342+\varepsilon}$ for the zeta function on the critical line

On the Morse-Sard property and level sets of $W^{n,1}$ Sobolev functions on ${\mathbb R}^n$

We establish Luzin N and Morse--Sard properties for functions from the Sobolev space $W^{n,1}({\mathbb R}^{n})$. Using these results we prove that almost all level sets are finite disjoint unions of $C^1$--smooth compact manifolds of dimension $n-1$. These results remain valid also within the larger space of functions of bounded variation $BV_{n}({\mathbb R}^{n})$. For the proofs we establish and use some new results on Luzin--type approximation of Sobolev and BV--functions by $C^k$--functions, where the exceptional sets have small Hausdorff content.

On a paper of Erdös and Szekeres

Propositions 1.1 -- 1.3 stated below contribute to results and certain problems considered in a paper by Erdos and Szekeres, on the behavior of products $\prod^n_1 (1-z^{a_j}), 1\leq a_1\leq \cdots\leq a_n$ integers. In the discussion, $\{a_1, \ldots, a_n \}$ will be either a proportional subset of $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ or a set of large arithmetic diameter.

Markoff Triples and Strong Approximation

We investigate the transitivity properties of the group of morphisms generated by Vieta involutions on the solutions in congruences to the Markoff equation as well as to other Markoff type affine cubic surfaces. These are dictated by the finite $\bar{\mathbb Q}$ orbits of these actions and these can be determined effectively. The results are applied to give forms of strong approximation for integer points, and to sieving, on these surfaces

Decouplings for curves and hypersurfaces with nonzero Gaussian curvature

We prove two types of results. First we develop the decoupling theory for hypersurfaces with nonzero Gaussian curvature, which extends our earlier work from \cite{BD3}. As a consequence of this we obtain sharp (up to $ε$ losses) Strichartz estimates for the hyperbolic Schrödinger equation on the torus. Our second main result is an $l^2$ decoupling for non degenerate curves which has implications for Vinogradov's mean value theorem.

Toward a unified theory of sparse dimensionality reduction in Euclidean space

Let $Φ\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times n}$ be a sparse Johnson-Lindenstrauss transform [KN14] with $s$ non-zeroes per column. For a subset $T$ of the unit sphere, $\varepsilon\in(0,1/2)$ given, we study settings for $m,s$ required to ensure $$ \mathop{\mathbb{E}}_Φ\sup_{x\in T} \left|\|Φx\|_2^2 - 1 \right| < \varepsilon , $$ i.e. so that $Φ$ preserves the norm of every $x\in T$ simultaneously and multiplicatively up to $1+\varepsilon$. We introduce a new complexity parameter, which depends on the geometry of $T$, and show that it suffices to choose $s$ and $m$ such that this parameter is small. Our result is a sparse analog of Gordon's theorem, which was concerned with a dense $Φ$ having i.i.d. Gaussian entries. We qualitatively unify several results related to the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma, subspace embeddings, and Fourier-based restricted isometries. Our work also implies new results in using the sparse Johnson-Lindenstrauss transform in numerical linear algebra, classical and model-based compressed sensing, manifold learning, and constrained least squares problems such as the Lasso.
