A remark on solutions of the Pell equation

The main purpose of this Note is to provide a non-trivial bound on certain Kloosterman sums as considered in the recent paper of E. Fouvry [F], leading to a small improvement of his result on the Pell equation.

On $L^p$-resolvent estimates and the density of eigenvalues for compact Riemannian manifolds

We address an interesting question raised by Dos Santos Ferreira, Kenig and Salo about regions ${\mathcal R}_g\subset {\mathbb C}$ for which there can be uniform $L^{\frac{2n}{n+2}}\to L^{\frac{2n}{n-2}}$ resolvent estimates for $Δ_g+ζ$, $ζ\in {\mathcal R}_g$, where $Δ_g$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator with metric $g$ on a given compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge3$. This is related to earlier work of Kenig, Ruiz and the third author for the Euclidean Laplacian, in which case the region is the entire complex plane minus any disc centered at the origin. Presently, we show that for the round metric on the sphere, $S^n$, the resolvent estimates in Ferreira et al, involving a much smaller region, are essentially optimal. We do this by establishing sharp bounds based on the distance from $ζ$ to the spectrum of $Δ_{S^n}$. In the other direction, we also show that the bounds in \cite{Kenig} can be sharpened logarithmically for manifolds with nonpositive curvature, and by powers in the case of the torus, ${\mathbb T}^n={\mathbb R}^n/{\mathbb Z}^n$, with the flat metric. The latter improves earlier bounds of Shen. Further improvements for the torus are obtained using recent techniques of the first author and his work with Guth based on the multilinear estimates of Bennett, Carbery and Tao. Our approach also allows us to give a natural necessary condition for favorable resolvent estimates that is based on a measurement of the density of the spectrum of $\sqrt{-Δ_g}$, and, moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition based on natural improved spectral projection estimates for shrinking intervals.

Almost sure global well posedness for the radial nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the unit ball I: the 2D case

Our first purpose is to extend the results from \cite{T} on the radial defocusing NLS on the disc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ to arbitrary smooth (defocusing) nonlinearities and show the existence of a well-defined flow on the support of the Gibbs measure (which is the natural extension of the classical flow for smooth data). We follow a similar approach as in \cite{BB-1} exploiting certain additional a priori space-time bounds that are provided by the invariance of the Gibbs measure. Next, we consider the radial focusing equation with cubic nonlinearity (the mass-subcritical case was studied in \cite{T2}) where the Gibbs measure is subject to an $L^2$-norm restriction. A phase transition is established, of the same nature as studied in the work of Lebowitz-Rose-Speer \cite{LRS} on the torus. For sufficiently small $L^2$-norm, the Gibbs measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the free measure, and moreover we have a well-defined dynamics.

On Eigenvalue spacings for the 1-D Anderson model with singular site distribution

We study eigenvalue spacings and local eigenvalue statistics for 1D lattice Schrodinger operators with Holder regular potential, obtaining a version of Minami's inequality and Poisson statistics for the local eigenvalue spacings. The main additional new input are regular properties of the Furstenberg measures and the density of states obtained in some of the author's earlier work.

On the local eigenvalue spacings for certain Anderson-Bernoulli Hamiltonians

The aim of this work is to extend the results from [B2] on local eigenvalue spacings to certain 1D lattice Schrodinger with a Bernoulli potential. We assume the disorder satisfies a certain algebraic condition that enables one to invoke the recent results from [B1] on the regularity of the density of states. In particular we establish Poisson local eigenvalue statistics in those models

On Pleijel's nodal domain theorem

A slight improvement of Pleijel's estimate on the number of nodal domains is obtained, exploiting a refinement of the Faber-Krahn inequality and packing density of discs.

Strong Ill-posedness of the incompressible Euler equation in borderline Sobolev spaces

For the $d$-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, the standard energy method gives local wellposedness for initial velocity in Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb R^d)$, $s>s_c:=d/2+1$. The borderline case $s=s_c$ was a folklore open problem. In this paper we consider the physical dimensions $d=2,3$ and show that if we perturb any given smooth initial data in $H^{s_c}$ norm, then the corresponding solution can have infinite $H^{s_c}$ norm instantaneously at $t>0$. The constructed solutions are unique and even $C^{\infty}$-smooth in some cases. To prove these results we introduce a new strategy: large Lagrangian deformation induces critical norm inflation. As an application we also settle several closely related open problems.

On Zaremba's Conjecture

It is shown that there is a constant A and a density one subset S of the positive integers, such that for all q in S there is some 1<=p<q, (p, q)=1, so that p/q has all its partial quotients bounded by A.

On Zaremba's Conjecture

Zaremba's 1971 conjecture predicts that every integer appears as the denominator of a finite continued fraction whose partial quotients are bounded by an absolute constant. We confirm this conjecture for a set of density one.

The Affine Sieve Beyond Expansion I: Thin Hypotenuses

We study an instance of the Affine Sieve, producing a level of distribution beyond that which can be obtained from current techniques, even assuming a Selberg/Ramanujan-type spectral gap. In particular, we consider the set of hypotenuses in a thin orbit of Pythagorean triples. Previous work [Kon07, Kon09, KO12] gave an exponent of distribution alpha < 1/12 coming from Gamburd's [Gam02] gap theta = 5/6, thereby producing R = 13 almost primes in this linear sieve problem (see Sec. 1 for definitions). If conditioned on a best possible gap theta = 1/2, the known method would give an exponent alpha < 1/4, and R = 5 almost primes. The exponent 1/4 is the natural analogue of the "Bombieri-Vinogradov" range of distribution for this problem, see Remark 1.19. In this paper, we unconditionally prove the exponent alpha < 7/24 (in the "Elliott-Halberstam" range), thereby producing R = 4 almost primes. The main tools involve developing bilinear forms and the dispersion method in the range of incomplete sums for this Affine Sieve problem.

On the Local-Global Conjecture for integral Apollonian gaskets

We prove that a set of density one satisfies the local-global conjecture for integral Apollonian gaskets. That is, for a fixed integral, primitive Apollonian gasket, almost every (in the sense of density) admissible (passing local obstructions) integer is the curvature of some circle in the gasket.

A lower bound for the Lyapounov exponents of the random Schrodinger operator on a strip

We consider the random Schrodinger operator on a strip of width $W$, assuming the site distribution of bounded density. It is shown that the positive Lyapounov exponents satisfy a lower bound roughly exponential in $-W$ or $W\to \infty$. The argument proceeds directly by establishing Green's function decay, but does not appeal to Furstenberg's random matrix theory on the strip. One ingredient involved is the construction of `barriers' using the RSO theory on $\mathbb Z$.

Invariant Gibbs measure evolution for the radial nonlinear wave equation on the 3D ball

We establish new global well-posedness results along Gibbs measure evolution for the nonlinear wave equation posed on the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^3$ via two distinct approaches. The first approach invokes the method established in the works \cite{B1,B2,B3} based on a contraction-mapping principle and applies to a certain range of nonlinearities. The second approach allows to cover the full range of nonlinearities admissible to treatment by Gibbs measure, working instead with a delicate analysis of convergence properties of solutions. The method of the second approach is quite general, and we shall give applications to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the unit ball in subsequent works \cite{BB1,BB2}.
