An exact algorithm for U(N) matrix models in the gauge-invariant singlet sector

Matrix models appear as fundamental descriptions of M-theory and D-brane dynamics, and via the gauge/gravity duality their gauge-invariant, or singlet, sector describes the purely gravitational degrees of freedom in the holographic dual. We present a new exact algorithm for computing observables of bosonic U(N) matrix models in the gauge-invariant singlet sector. This sector is spanned by an orthogonal basis of Schur polynomials (for a single matrix) and restricted Schur polynomials (for multiple matrices), which diagonalizes the free Hamiltonian and provides a natural truncation of the Hilbert space by excitation number. Matrix elements of the interaction Hamiltonian, or any gauge-invariant observable, are evaluated through a group-theoretic reduction to cosets and double cosets of suitable subgroups of the symmetric group, together with character sums on the symmetric group. The resulting entries are closed-form polynomials in the gauge-group rank N, assembled from group-theoretic data that are precomputed once and can be reused for any N and any coupling constants. We validate the one-matrix implementation against the exact mapping to N non-interacting fermions, demonstrating rapid convergence of the low-lying spectrum with the cutoff. The multi-matrix extension is outlined; its main bottleneck is the computation of restricted characters of the symmetric group, for which no algorithm comparable to the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule is currently known. The framework gives direct access to finite-N, finite-coupling dynamics of gauge-invariant states and opens a new computational window on the non-planar regime of holographic matrix models.

Gaussian boson sampling for binary optimization

Binary optimization is a fundamental area in computational science, with wide-ranging applications from logistics to cryptography, where the tasks are often formulated as Quadratic or Polynomial Unconstrained Binary Optimization problems (QUBO/PUBO). In this work, we propose to use a parametrized Gaussian Boson Sampler (GBS) with threshold detectors to address such problems. We map general PUBO instance onto a quantum Hamiltonian and optimize the Conditional Value-at-Risk of its energy with respect to the GBS ansatz. In particular, we observe that, when the algorithm reduces to standard Variational Quantum Eigensolver, the cost function is analytical. Therefore, it can be computed efficiently, along with its gradient, for low-degree polynomials using only classical computing resources. Numerical experiments on 3-SAT and Graph Partitioning problems show significant performance gains over random guessing, providing a first proof of concept for our proposed approach.

Gaussian Boson Sampling for binary optimization

In this study, we consider a Gaussian Boson Sampler for solving a Flight Gate Assignment problem. We employ a Variational Quantum Eigensolver approach using the Conditional Value-at-risk cost function. We provide proof of principle by carrying out numerical simulations on randomly generated instances.

Dirac cones for a mean-field model of graphene

In this article, we show that, in the dissociation regime and under a non-degeneracy assumption, the reduced Hartree-Fock theory of graphene presents Dirac points at the vertices of the first Brillouin zone and that the Fermi level is exactly at the coincidence point of the cones. For this purpose, we first consider a general Schr\"odinger operator $H=-\Delta+V_L$ acting on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with a potential $V_L$ which is assumed to be periodic with respect to some lattice with length scale $L$. Under some assumptions which covers periodic reduced Hartree-Fock theory, we show that, in the limit $L\to\infty$, the low-lying spectral bands of $H_L$ are given to leading order by the tight-binding model. For the hexagonal lattice of graphene, the latter presents singularities at the vertices of the Brillouin zone. In addition, the shape of the Bloch bands is so that the Fermi level is exactly on the cones.

The diatomic Hartree model at dissociation

We study the Hartree model for two electrons with spin, living in the two-dimensional or three-dimensional space with Coulomb interactions and submitted to the potential induced by two nuclei of charge +1. In the limit where the nuclei move away from each other, we show that the two lowest eigenfunctions of the mean-field hamiltonian are asymptotically given by an even, respectively odd, superposition of the minimizer associated with the corresponding Hartree one nucleus model. We then give upper and lower bounds on the exponentially small gap between the first two eigenvalues, due to (nonlinear) quantum tunneling.
