Keller and Lieb-Thirring estimates of the eigenvalues in the gap of Dirac operators

We estimate the lowest eigenvalue in the gap of the essential spectrum of a Dirac operator with mass in terms of a Lebesgue norm of the potential. Such a bound is the counterpart for Dirac operators of the Keller estimates for the Schrödinger operator, which are equivalent to Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev interpolation inequalities. Domain, self-adjointness, optimality and critical values of the norms are addressed, while the optimal potential is given by a Dirac equation with a Kerr nonlinearity. A new critical bound appears, which is the smallest value of the norm of the potential for which eigenvalues may reach the bottom of the gap in the essential spectrum. The Keller estimate is then extended to a Lieb-Thirring inequality for the eigenvalues in the gap. Most of our result are established in the Birman-Schwinger reformulation.

On Gaussian interpolation inequalities

This paper is devoted to Gaussian interpolation inequalities with endpoint cases corresponding to the Gaussian Poincaré and the logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, seen as limits in large dimensions of Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities on spheres. Entropy methods are investigated using not only heat flow techniques but also nonlinear diffusion equations as on spheres. A new stability result is established for the Gaussian measure, which is directly inspired by recent results for spheres.

Existence and stability of infinite time blow-up in the Keller-Segel system

Perhaps the most classical diffusion model for chemotaxis is the Keller-Segel system \begin{equation}\tag{$\ast$} \label{ks0} \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t =&\; Δu - \nabla \cdot(u \nabla v) \quad in {\mathbb R}^2\times(0,\infty),\\ v =&\; (-Δ_{\R^2})^{-1} u := \frac 1{2π} \int_{R^2} \, \log \frac 1{|x-z|}\,u(z,t)\, dz, \\ & \qquad\ u(\cdot ,0) = u_0 \geq 0\quad\hbox{in } R^2. \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation} We consider the {\em critical mass case} $\int_{R^2} u_0(x)\, dx = 8π$ which corresponds to the exact threshold between finite-time blow-up and self-similar diffusion towards zero. We find a radial function $u_0^*$ with mass $8π$ such that for any initial condition $u_0$ sufficiently close to $u_0^*$ the solution $u(x,t)$ of \equ{ks0} is globally defined and blows-up in infinite time. As $t\to+\infty $ it has the approximate profile $$ u(x,t) \approx \frac 1{λ^2} \ch{U}\left (\frac {x-ξ(t)}{λ(t)} \right ), \quad \ch{U}(y)= \frac{8}{(1+|y|^2)^2}, $$ where $λ(t) \approx \frac c{\sqrt{\log t}}, \ ξ(t)\to q $ for some $c>0$ and $q\in \R^2$. This result answers affirmatively the nonradial stability conjecture raised in \cite{g}.

Symmetry breaking and weighted Euclidean logarithmic Sobolev inequalities

On the Euclidean space, we establish some Weighted Logarithmic Sobolev (WLS) inequalities. We characterize a symmetry range in which optimal functions are radially symmetric, and a symmetry breaking range. (WLS) inequalities are a limit case for a family of subcritical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg (CKN) inequalities with similar symmetry properties. A generalized carré du champ method applies not only to the optimal solution of the nonlinear elliptic Euler-Lagrange equation and proves a rigidity result as for (CKN) inequalities, but also to entropy type estimates, with the full strength of the carré du champ method in a parabolic setting. This is a significant improvement on known results for (CKN). Finally, we briefly sketch some consequences of our results for the weighted diffusion flow.

On the eigenvalues of operators with gaps. Application to Dirac operators

This paper is devoted to a general min-max characterization of the eigenvalues in a gap of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint unbounded operator. We prove an abstract theorem, then we apply it to the case of Dirac operators with a Coulomb-like potential. The result is optimal for the Coulomb potential. An erratum is appended at the end of the tex.

Constructive stability results in interpolation inequalities and explicit improvements of decay rates of fast diffusion equations

We provide a scheme of a recent stability result for a family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev (GNS) inequalities, which is equivalent to an improved entropy - entropy production inequality associated with an appropriate fast diffusion equation (FDE) written in self-similar variables. This result can be rephrased as an improved decay rate of the entropy of the solution of (FDE) for well prepared initial data. There is a family of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg (CKN) inequalities which has a very similar structure. When the exponents are in a range for which the optimal functions for (CKN) are radially symmetric, we investigate how the methods for (GNS) can be extended to (CKN). In particular, we prove that the solutions of the evolution equation associated to (CKN) also satisfy an improved decay rate of the entropy, after an explicit delay. However, the improved rate is obtained without assuming that initial data are well prepared, which is a major difference with the (GNS) case.

Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev and related inequalities: stability

The purpose of this text is twofold. We present a review of the existing stability results for Sobolev, Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) and related inequalities. We also contribute to the topic with some observations on constructive stability estimates for (HLS).

Parabolic methods for ultraspherical interpolation inequalities

The carré du champ method is a powerful technique for proving interpolation inequalities with explicit constants in presence of a non-trivial metric on a manifold. The method applies to some classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities on the sphere, with optimal constants. Very nonlinear regimes close to the critical Sobolev exponent can be covered using nonlinear parabolic flows of porous medium or fast diffusion type. Considering power law weights is a natural question in relation with symmetry breaking issues for Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities, but regularity estimates for a complete justification of the computation are missing. We provide the first example of a complete parabolic proof based on a nonlinear flow by regularizing the singularity induced by the weight. Our result is established in the simplified framework of a diffusion built on the ultraspherical operator, which amounts to reduce the problem to functions on the sphere with simple symmetry properties.

Fractional Hypocoercivity

This paper is devoted to kinetic equations without confinement. We investigate the large time behaviour induced by collision operators with fat tailed local equilibria. Such operators have an anomalous diffusion limit. In the appropriate scaling, the macroscopic equation involves a fractional diffusion operator so that the optimal decay rate is determined by a fractional Nash type inequality. At kinetic level we develop an $\mathrm L^2$-hypocoercivity approach and establish a rate of decay compatible with the fractional diffusion limit.

Functional inequalities: nonlinear flows and entropy methods as a tool for obtaining sharp and constructive results

Interpolation inequalities play an essential role in Analysis with fundamental consequences in Mathematical Physics, Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Markov Processes, etc., and have a wide range of applications in various other areas of Science. Research interests have evolved over the years: while mathematicians were originally focussed on abstract properties (for instance appropriate notions of functional spaces for the existence of weak solutions in PDEs), more qualitative questions (for instance, bifurcation diagrams, multiplicity of the solutions in PDEs and their qualitative behaviour) progressively emerged. The use of entropy methods in nonlinear PDEs is a typical example: in some cases, the optimal constant in the inequality can be interpreted as an optimal rate of decay of an entropy for an associated evolution equation. Much more has been learned by adopting this point of view. This paper aims at illustrating some of these recent aspect of entropy-entropy production inequalities, with applications to stability in Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities and symmetry results in Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities. Entropy methods provide a framework which relates nonlinear regimes with their linearized counterparts. This framework allows to prove optimality results, symmetry results and stability estimates. Some emphasis will be put on the hidden structure which explain such properties. Related open problems will be listed.

Logarithmic estimates for mean-field models in dimension two and the Schrödinger-Poisson system

In dimension two, we investigate a free energy and the ground state energy of the Schrödinger-Poisson system coupled with a logarithmic nonlinearity in terms of underlying functional inequalities which take into account the scaling invariances of the problem. Such a system can be considered as a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a cubic but nonlocal Poisson nonlinearity, and a local logarithmic nonlinearity. Both cases of repulsive and attractive forces are considered. We also assume that there is an external potential with minimal growth at infinity, which turns out to have a logarithmic growth. Our estimates rely on new logarithmic interpolation inequalities which combine logarithmic Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. The two-dimensional model appears as a limit case of more classical problems in higher dimensions.

Sharpening of decay rates in Fourier based hypocoercivity methods

This paper is dealing with two $L^2$ hypocoercivity methods based on Fourier decomposition and mode-by-mode estimates, with applications to rates of convergence or decay in kinetic equations on the torus and on the whole Euclidean space. The main idea is to perturb the standard $L^2$ norm by a twist obtained either by a nonlocal perturbation build upon diffusive macroscopic dynamics, or by a change of the scalar product based on Lyapunov matrix inequalities. We explore various estimates for equations involving a Fokker-Planck and a linear relaxation operator. We review existing results in simple cases and focus on the accuracy of the estimates of the rates. The two methods are compared in the case of the Goldstein-Taylor model in one-dimension.

L2-Hypocoercivity and large time asymptotics of the linearized Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system

This paper is devoted to the linearized Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system in presence of an external potential of confinement. We investigate the large time behaviour of the solutions using hypocoercivity methods and a notion of scalar product adapted to the presence of a Poisson coupling. Our framework provides estimates which are uniform in the diffusion limit. As an application in a simple case, we study the one-dimensional case and prove the exponential convergence of the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system without any small mass assumption.

Weighted Korn and Poincaré-Korn inequalities in the Euclidean space and associated operators

We prove functional inequalities on vector fields on the Euclidean space when it is equipped with a bounded measure that satisfies a Poincaré inequality, and study associated self-adjoint operators. The weighted Korn inequality compares the differential matrix, once projected orthogonally to certain finite-dimensional spaces, with its symmetric part and, in an improved form of the inequality, an additional term. We also consider Poincaré-Korn inequalities for estimating a projection of the vector field by the symmetric part of the differential matrix and zeroth-order versions of these inequalities obtained using the Witten-Laplace operator. The constants depend on geometric properties of the potential and the estimates are quantitative and constructive. These inequalities are motivated by kinetic theory and related with the Korn inequality (1906) in mechanics, on a bounded domain.

Critical magnetic field for 2d magnetic Dirac-Coulomb operators and Hardy inequalities

This paper is devoted to the study of the two-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb operator in presence of an Aharonov-Bohm external magnetic potential. We characterize the highest intensity of the magnetic field for which a two-dimensional magnetic Hardy inequality holds. Up to this critical magnetic field, the operator admits a distinguished self-adjoint extension and there is a notion of ground state energy, defined as the lowest eigenvalue in the gap of the continuous spectrum.

Inequalities involving Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potentials in dimensions 2 and 3

This paper is devoted to a collection of results on nonlinear interpolation inequalities associated with Schr{ö}dinger operators involving Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potentials, and to some consequences. As symmetry plays an important role for establishing optimality results, we shall consider various cases corresponding to a circle, a two-dimensional sphere or a two-dimensional torus, and also the Euclidean spaces of dimensions two and three. Most of the results are new and we put the emphasis on the methods, as very little is known on symmetry, rigidity and optimality in presence of a magnetic field. The most spectacular applications are new magnetic Hardy inequalities in dimensions 2 and 3.

Stability in Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities - Supplementary material

This document comes as supplementary material of the paper Stability in Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities by the same authors. It is intended to state a number of classical or elementary statements concerning constants and inequalities for which we are not aware of existing published material or expressions detailed enough for our purpose. We claim no originality on the theoretical results and rely on standard methods in most cases, except that we keep track of the constants and provide constructive estimates.

Heterogeneous social interactions and the COVID-19 lockdown outcome in a multi-group SEIR model

We study variants of the SEIR model for interpreting some qualitative features of the statistics of the Covid-19 epidemic in France. Standard SEIR models distinguish essentially two regimes: either the disease is controlled and the number of infected people rapidly decreases, or the disease spreads and contaminates a significant fraction of the population until herd immunity is achieved. After lockdown, at first sight it seems that social distancing is not enough to control the outbreak. We discuss here a possible explanation, namely that the lockdown is creating social heterogeneity: even if a large majority of the population complies with the lockdown rules, a small fraction of the population still has to maintain a normal or high level of social interactions, such as health workers, providers of essential services, etc. This results in an apparent high level of epidemic propagation as measured through re-estimations of the basic reproduction ratio. However, these measures are limited to averages, while variance inside the population plays an essential role on the peak and the size of the epidemic outbreak and tends to lower these two indicators. We provide theoretical and numerical results to sustain such a view.
