Temporal limitations and digital data processing in continuous variable measurements of non-Gaussian states

Non-Gaussian quantum states and operations are essential tools for multiple quantum information protocols exploiting light as information career. In this context, a key role is played by schemes operating with continuous wave light, in which non-Gaussian states are obtained by photon subtraction/addition and eventually reconstructed by quantum state tomography. In these configurations, the temporal resolution of the homodyne detection and the digital data processing critically affect our ability to faithfully reconstruct the produced non-Gaussian states. In this work, we apply digital data processing to experimental data to study how the temporal performances of the detection chain affect the acquisition and treatment of tomographic data. This allows understanding how these features impact the quality of quantum states observed by non-ideal detection chains. By doing so, we discuss the actual constraints on the acquisition and reconstruction of non-Gaussian states by taking into account the limitations of realistic experimental resources.

Towards Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution with Photonic Devices

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols enable two distant parties to communicate with information-theoretically proven secrecy. However, these protocols are generally vulnerable to potential mismatches between the physical modeling and the implementation of their quantum operations, thereby opening opportunities for side channel attacks. Device-Independent (DI) QKD addresses this problem by reducing the degree of device modeling to a black-box setting. The stronger security obtained in this way comes at the cost of a reduced noise tolerance, rendering experimental demonstrations more challenging: so far, only one experiment based on trapped ions was able to successfully generate a secret key. Photonic platforms have however long been preferred for QKD thanks to their suitability to optical fiber transmission, high repetition rates, readily available hardware, and potential for circuit integration. In this work, we assess the feasibility of DIQKD on a photonic circuit recently identified by machine learning techniques. For this, we introduce an efficient converging hierarchy of semi-definite programs (SDP) to bound the conditional von Neumann entropy and develop a finite-statistics analysis that takes into account full outcome statistics. Our analysis shows that the proposed optical circuit is sufficiently resistant to noise to make an experimental realization realistic.

Multipartite quantum correlated bright frequency combs

This experimental work demonstrates multipartite quantum correlation in bright frequency combs out of a microresonator integrated on silicon nitride operating above its oscillation threshold. Multipartite features, going beyond so far reported two-mode correlation, naturally arise due to a cascade of non-linear optical processes, making a single-color laser pump sufficient to initiate their generation. Our results show the transition from two-mode to multipartite correlation, witnessed by noise reductions as low as $-2.5$\,dB and $-2$\,dB, respectively, compared to corresponding classical levels. A constant of the movement of the non-linear interaction Hamiltonian is identified and used to asses the multipartite behavior. Reported demonstrations pave the way to next generation on-chip multipartite sources for quantum technologies applications.

Decoherence induced by dipole-dipole couplings between atomic species in rare-earth ion-doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$

Rare-earth ion doped crystals are state-of-the-art platforms for processing quantum information, particularly thanks to their excellent optical and spin coherence properties at cryogenic temperatures. Experimental observations have shown that the application of a static magnetic bias field significantly improves the coherence times in the rare-earth ions ensemble, but only a few studies have focused on its the dependency as a function of both magnetic field direction and amplitude. This is especially true for magnetic field amplitudes under the mT, and for low magnetic dipole moment ions. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the magnetic field parameters and the decoherence caused by magnetic dipole-dipole coupling with the nearest neighbors nuclear spins in the crystal. The primary non-Kramers rare-earth ions investigated here are europium and praseodymium, but we also extend our study to the ytterbium Kramers ion due to its low magnetic dipole in the mT range. We perform theoretical investigations and simulations of the energy structure and coherence time evolution and identify good correspondences between experimental and simulated spin echo data. This work allows us to pinpoint the most relevant decoherence mechanisms in the considered magnetic field regime, and to predict favorable magnetic configurations.

Multipartite Entanglement in Bright Frequency Combs from Microresonators

We present a theoretical model of multimode quantum correlations in bright frequency combs generated in continuous-wave regime by microresonators above threshold. Our analysis shows how these correlations emerge from cascading four-wave mixing processes fed by the input pump as well as the generated bright beams. Logarithmic negativity criterion is employed to quantify entanglement between partitions of modes, demonstrating the transition from a bipartite regime just above the oscillation threshold to the multipartite one at higher input pump powers. Due to its generality, our model can be safely used to describe other kinds of non-linear $χ$ (3) cavities.

Proposal for spin squeezing in rare-earth ion-doped crystals with a four-color scheme

Achieving spin squeezing within solid-state devices is a long standing research goal, due to the promise of their particularities, for instance their long coherence times, the possibility of low-temperature experiments or integration of entanglement-assisted sensors on-chip. In this work, we investigate an interferometer-free four-color scheme to achieve spin squeezing of rare-earth ion-doped crystals. The proposal relies on an analytic derivation that starts from a Tavis-Cummings model for light-matter interaction, providing microscopic insights onto spin-squeezing generation. We evidence spin squeezing signature in the light intensity variance. We consider the two particular cases of europium- and praseodymium-doped yttrium orthosilicates, workhorses of quantum technology developments. We show that up to 8 dB of spin squeezing can be obtained with readily accessible experimental resources, including noise due to photon scattering. Our results for rare-earth ion-doped crystals add to promising properties of these platforms for manipulating many-body entangled states and for high-precision measurements.

Hidden and detectable squeezing from micro-resonators

In the context of quantum integrated photonics, this work investigates the quantum properties of light generated by silicon and silicon nitride micro-resonators pumped in pulsed regime. The developed theoretical model, performed in terms of the morphing supermodes, provides a comprehensive description of the generated quantum states. Remarkably, it shows that a full measurement of states carrying optimal squeezing levels is not accessible to standard homodyne detection, thus leaving hidden part of generated quantum features. By presenting and discussing this behaviour, as well as possible strategies to amend it, this work proves itself essential to future quantum applications exploiting micro-resonators as sources of multimode states.

Plug-&-play generation of non-Gaussian states of light at a telecom wavelength

This work marks an important progress towards practical quantum optical technologies in the continuous variable regime, as it shows the feasibility of experiments where non-Gaussian state generation entirely relies on plug-&-play components from guided-wave optics technologies. This strategy is demonstrated experimentally with the heralded preparation of low amplitude Schrödinger cat states based on single-photon subtraction from a squeezed vacuum. All stages of the experiment are based on off-the-shelf fiber components. This leads to a stable, compact, and easily re-configurable realization, fully compatible with existing fibre networks and, more in general, with future out-of-the-laboratory applications.

Storage of photonic time-bin qubits for up to 20 ms in a rare-earth doped crystal

Long-duration quantum memories for photonic qubits are essential components for achieving long-distance quantum networks and repeaters. The mapping of optical states onto coherent spin-waves in rare earth ensembles is a particularly promising approach to quantum storage. However, it remains challenging to achieve long-duration storage at the quantum level due to read-out noise caused by the required spin-wave manipulation. In this work, we apply dynamical decoupling techniques and a small magnetic field to achieve the storage of six temporal modes for 20, 50 and 100 ms in a $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, based on an atomic frequency comb memory, where each temporal mode contains around one photon on average. The quantum coherence of the memory is verified by storing two time-bin qubits for 20 ms, with an average memory output fidelity of $F=(85\pm 2)\%$ for an average number of photons per qubit of $μ_\text{in}$ = 0.92$\pm$0.04. The qubit analysis is done at the read-out of the memory, using a type of composite adiabatic read-out pulse we developed.

A theoretical framework for photon-subtraction with non-mode selective resources

This work establishes a versatile theoretical framework that explicitly describes single-photon subtraction from multimode quantum light in the context of non-Gaussian state generation and manipulation. The treatment focuses on easy-to-implement configurations in which no mode-selective operation is available and evaluates features and advantages of scheme where only simple filtering stages are employed on the experiments. Such configuration, by considerably reducing the experimental overheads, makes experiments involving single photon subtraction easier to be implemented. Obtained theoretical framework allows retrieving, given a multimode input state, optimal conditions required to herald and then to detect non-Gaussian states, providing a practical and powerful toolbox for experiments' design. The application of the proposed approach to the case study of Schrödinger kitten preparation starting from a frequency multimode squeezed state illustrates the impact of the derived theoretical tools.

Optical and spin manipulation of non-Kramers rare-earth ions under weak magnetic field for quantum memory applications

Rare-earth ion doped crystals have proven to be solid platforms for implementing quantum memories. Their potential use for integrated photonics with large multiplexing capability and unprecedented coherence times is at the core of their attractiveness. The best performances of these ions are however usually obtained when subject to a dc magnetic field, but consequences of such fields on the quantum memory protocols have only received little attention. In this article, we focus on the effect of a dc bias magnetic field on the population manipulation of non-Kramers ions with nuclear quadrupole states, both in the spin and optical domains, by developing a simple theoretical model. We apply this model to explain experimental observations in a ${}^{151}$Eu:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, and highlight specific consequences on the AFC spin-wave protocol. The developed analysis should allow to predict optimal magnetic field configurations for various protocols.

Optical storage for 0.53 seconds in a solid-state atomic frequency comb memory using dynamical decoupling

Quantum memories with long storage times are key elements in long-distance quantum networks. The atomic frequency comb (AFC) memory in particular has shown great promise to fulfill this role, having demonstrated multimode capacity and spin-photon quantum correlations. However, the memory storage times have so-far been limited to about one millisecond, realized in a Eu${}^{3+}$ doped Y${}_2$SiO${}_5$ crystal at zero applied magnetic field. Motivated by studies showing increased spin coherence times under applied magnetic field, we developed a AFC spin-wave memory utilizing a weak 15 mT magnetic field in a specific direction that allows efficient optical and spin manipulation for AFC memory operations. With this field configuration the AFC spin-wave storage time increased to 40 ms using a simple spin-echo sequence. Furthermore, by applying dynamical decoupling techniques the spin-wave coherence time reaches 530 ms, a 300-fold increase with respect to previous AFC spin-wave storage experiments. This result paves the way towards long duration storage of quantum information in solid-state ensemble memories.

Characterization of the hyperfine interaction of the excited $^5$D$_0$ state of Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$

We characterize the Europium (Eu$^{3+}$) hyperfine interaction of the excited state ($^5$D$_0$) and determine its effective spin Hamiltonian parameters for the Zeeman and quadrupole tensors. An optical free induction decay method is used to measure all hyperfine splittings under weak external magnetic field (up to 10 mT) for various field orientations. On the basis of the determined Hamiltonian we discuss the possibility to predict optical transition probabilities between hyperfine levels for the $^7$F$_{0} \longleftrightarrow ^5$D$_{0}$ transition. The obtained results provide necessary information to realize an optical quantum memory scheme which utilizes long spin coherence properties of $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ material under external magnetic fields

Multi-mode and long-lived quantum correlations between photons and spins in a crystal

The realization of quantum networks and quantum repeaters remains an outstanding challenge in quantum communication. These rely on entanglement of remote matter systems, which in turn requires creation of quantum correlations between a single photon and a matter system. A practical way to establish such correlations is via spontaneous Raman scattering in atomic ensembles, known as the DLCZ scheme. However, time multiplexing is inherently difficult using this method, which leads to low communication rates even in theory. Moreover, it is desirable to find solid-state ensembles where such matter-photon correlations could be generated. Here we demonstrate quantum correlations between a single photon and a spin excitation in up to 12 temporal modes, in a $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$ doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, using a novel DLCZ approach that is inherently multimode. After a storage time of 1 ms, the spin excitation is converted into a second photon. The quantum correlation of the generated photon pair is verified by violating a Cauchy - Schwarz inequality. Our results show that solid-state rare-earth crystals could be used to generate remote multi-mode entanglement, an important resource for future quantum networks.

Multiplexed on-demand storage of polarization qubits in a crystal

A long-lived and multimode quantum memory is a key component needed for the development of quantum communication. Here we present temporally multiplexed storage of 5 photonic polarization qubits encoded onto weak coherent states in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. Using spin refocusing techniques we can preserve the qubits for more than half a millisecond. The temporal multiplexing allows us to increase the effective rate of the experiment by a factor of 5, which emphasizes the importance of multimode storage for quantum communication. The fidelity upon retrieval is higher than the maximum classical fidelity achievable with qubits encoded onto single photons and we show that the memory fidelity is mainly limited by the memory signal-to-noise ratio. These results show the viability and versatility of long-lived, multimode quantum memories based on rare-earth-ion doped crystals.

Towards highly multimode optical quantum memory for quantum repeaters

Long-distance quantum communication through optical fibers is currently limited to a few hundreds of kilometres due to fiber losses. Quantum repeaters could extend this limit to continental distances. Most approaches to quantum repeaters require highly multimode quantum memories in order to reach high communication rates. The atomic frequency comb memory scheme can in principle achieve high temporal multimode storage, without sacrificing memory efficiency. However, previous demonstrations have been hampered by the difficulty of creating high-resolution atomic combs, which reduces the efficiency for multimode storage. In this article we present a comb preparation method that allows one to increase the multimode capacity for a fixed memory bandwidth. We apply the method to a $^{151}$Eu$^{3+}$-doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, in which we demonstrate storage of 100 modes for 51 $μ$s using the AFC echo scheme (a delay-line memory), and storage of 50 modes for 0.541 ms using the AFC spin-wave memory (an on-demand memory). We also briefly discuss the ultimate multimode limit imposed by the optical decoherence rate, for a fixed memory bandwidth.

Generation of squeezed Schrödinger cat states with an operation allowing iterative growth

We present what is to our knowledge the first implementation of a Schrödinger cat states "breeding" operation, which allows an iterative growth of these states. We thus report the experimental generation of a squeezed Schrödinger cat state from two single photon Fock states, which can be seen as cat states with zero amplitude. These Fock states are mixed on a symmetrical beamsplitter and the generation is heralded by a homodyne measurement in one of the two output arms. The output state has a fidelity of 61% with an even squeezed Schrödinger cat state of amplitude $α=1.63$. This hybrid operation opens up new prospects in quantum optics as the protocol depicted here can be iterated in order to produce new kind of mesoscopic states.

Iterative tailoring of optical quantum states with homodyne measurements

As they can travel long distances, free space optical quantum states are good candidates for carrying information in quantum information technology protocols. These states, however, are often complex to produce and require protocols whose success probability drops quickly with an increase of the mean photon number. Here we propose a new protocol for the generation and growth of arbitrary states, based on one by one coherent adjunctions of the simple state superposition $α| 0 > +β| 1 >$. Due to the nature of the protocol, that allows for the use of quantum memories, it can outperform existing protocols.
