Sofic measures

Sofic measures, also known as hidden Markov measures, have been extensively studied. In this paper, we survey some equivalent definitions of this notion and improve a bound for deciding whether a sofic measure is~$k$-step Markov. We prove that if an invariant sofic measure with a linear representation of dimension~$n$ is a~$k$-step Markov chain, then~$k$ can be chosen at most equal to~$2^{n^2-1}$.

On the sub-additivity of stochastic matching

We consider a stochastic matching model with a general compatibility graph, as introduced in \cite{MaiMoy16}. We prove that most common matching policies (including FCFM, priorities and random) satisfy a particular sub-additive property, which we exploit to show in many cases, the coupling-from-the-past to the steady state, using a backwards scheme {\em à la} Loynes. We then use these results to explicitly construct perfect bi-infinite matchings, and to build a perfect simulation algorithm in the case where the buffer of the system is finite.

A spectral property for concurrent systems and some probabilistic applications

We study trace theoretic concurrent systems. This setting encompasses safe (1-bounded) Petri nets. We introduce a notion of irreducible concurrent system and we prove the equivalence between irreducibility and a "spectral property". The spectral property states a strict inequality between radii of convergence of certain growth series associated with the system. The proof that we present relies on analytic combinatorics techniques. The spectral property is the cornerstone of our theory, in a framework where the Perron-Frobenius theory does not apply directly. This restriction is an inherent difficulty in the study of concurrent systems. We apply the spectral property to the probabilistic theory of concurrent systems. We prove on the one hand the uniqueness of the uniform measure, a question left open in a previous paper. On the other hand, we prove that this uniform measure can be realized as a Markov chain of states-and-cliques on a state space that can be precisely characterized.

A product form for the general stochastic matching model

We consider a stochastic matching model with a general compatibility graph, as introduced in \cite{MaiMoy16}. We show that the natural necessary condition of stability of the system is also sufficient for the natural matching policy 'First Come, First Matched' (FCFM). For doing so, we derive the stationary distribution under a remarkable product form, by using an original dynamic reversibility property related to that of \cite{ABMW17} for the bipartite matching model.

Loynes construction for the extended bipartite matching

We propose an explicit construction of the stationary state of Extended Bipartite Matching (EBM) models, as defined in (Busic et. al., 2013). We use a Loynes-type backwards scheme similar in flavor to that in (Moyal et al., 2017), allowing to show the existence and uniqueness of a bi-infinite perfect matching under various conditions, for a large class of matching policies and of bipartite matching structures. The key algebraic element of our construction is the sub-additivity of a suitable stochastic recursive representation of the model, satisfied under most usual matching policies. By doing so, we also derive stability conditions for the system under general stationary ergodic assumptions, subsuming the classical markovian settings.

Reversibility and further properties of FCFS infinite bipartite matching

The model of FCFS infinite bipartite matching was introduced in caldentey-kaplan-weiss 2009. In this model there is a sequence of items that are chosen i.i.d. from $\mathcal{C}=\{c_1,\ldots,c_I\}$ and an independent sequence of items that are chosen i.i.d. from $\mathcal{S}=\{s_1,\ldots,s_J\}$, and a bipartite compatibility graph $G$ between $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{S}$. Items of the two sequences are matched according to the compatibility graph, and the matching is FCFS, each item in the one sequence is matched to the earliest compatible unmatched item in the other sequence. In adan-weiss 2011 a Markov chain associated with the matching was analyzed, a condition for stability was verified, a product form stationary distribution was derived and the rates $r_{c_i,s_j}$ of matches between compatible types $c_i$ and $s_j$ were calculated. In the current paper, we present several new results that unveil the fundamental structure of the model. First, we provide a pathwise Loynes' type construction which enables to prove the existence of a unique matching for the model defined over all the integers. Second, we prove that the model is dynamically reversible: we define an exchange transformation in which we interchange the positions of each matched pair, and show that the items in the resulting permuted sequences are again independent and i.i.d., and the matching between them is FCFS in reversed time. Third, we obtain product form stationary distributions of several new Markov chains associated with the model. As a by product, we compute useful performance measures, for instance the link lengths between matched items.

Uniform measures on braid monoids and dual braid monoids

We aim at studying the asymptotic properties of typical positive braids, respectively positive dual braids. Denoting by $μ_k$ the uniform distribution on positive (dual) braids of length $k$, we prove that the sequence $(μ_k)_k$ converges to a unique probability measure $μ_{\infty}$ on infinite positive (dual) braids. The key point is that the limiting measure $μ_{\infty}$ has a Markovian structure which can be described explicitly using the combinatorial properties of braids encapsulated in the Möbius polynomial. As a by-product, we settle a conjecture by Gebhardt and Tawn (J. Algebra, 2014) on the shape of the Garside normal form of large uniform braids.

Stability of the stochastic matching model

We introduce and study a new model that we call the {\em matching model}. Items arrive one by one in a buffer and depart from it as soon as possible but by pairs. The items of a departing pair are said to be {\em matched}. There is a finite set of classes $\maV$ for the items, and the allowed matchings depend on the classes, according to a {\em matching graph} on $\maV$. Upon arrival, an item may find several possible matches in the buffer. This indeterminacy is resolved by a {\em matching policy}. When the sequence of classes of the arriving items is i.i.d., the sequence of buffer-contents is a Markov chain, whose stability is investigated. In particular, we prove that the model may be stable if and only if the matching graph is non-bipartite.

Uniform generation in trace monoids

We consider the problem of random uniform generation of traces (the elements of a free partially commutative monoid) in light of the uniform measure on the boundary at infinity of the associated monoid. We obtain a product decomposition of the uniform measure at infinity if the trace monoid has several irreducible components-a case where other notions such as Parry measures, are not defined. Random generation algorithms are then examined.

Uniform and Bernoulli measures on the boundary of trace monoids

Trace monoids and heaps of pieces appear in various contexts in combinatorics. They also constitute a model used in computer science to describe the executions of asynchronous systems. The design of a natural probabilistic layer on top of the model has been a long standing challenge. The difficulty comes from the presence of commuting pieces and from the absence of a global clock. In this paper, we introduce and study the class of Bernoulli probability measures that we claim to be the simplest adequate probability measures on infinite traces. For this, we strongly rely on the theory of trace combinatorics with the Möbius polynomial in the key role. These new measures provide a theoretical foundation for the probabilistic study of concurrent systems.

The ultimate rank of tropical matrices

A tropical matrix is a matrix defined over the max-plus semiring. For such matrices, there exist several non-coinciding notions of rank: the row rank, the column rank, the Schein/Barvinok rank, the Kapranov rank, or the tropical rank, among others. In the present paper, we show that there exists a natural notion of ultimate rank for the powers of a tropical matrix, which does not depend on the underlying notion of rank. Furthermore, we provide a simple formula for the ultimate rank of a matrix which can therefore be computed in polynomial time. Then we turn our attention to finitely generated semigroups of matrices, for which our notion of ultimate rank is generalized naturally. We provide both combinatorial and geometric characterizations of semigroups having maximal ultimate rank. As a byproduct, we obtain a polynomial algorithm to decide if the ultimate rank of a finitely generated semigroup is maximal.

Probabilistic cellular automata and random fields with i.i.d. directions

Let us consider the simplest model of one-dimensional probabilistic cellular automata (PCA). The cells are indexed by the integers, the alphabet is {0, 1}, and all the cells evolve synchronously. The new content of a cell is randomly chosen, independently of the others, according to a distribution depending only on the content of the cell itself and of its right neighbor. There are necessary and sufficient conditions on the four parameters of such a PCA to have a Bernoulli product invariant measure. We study the properties of the random field given by the space-time diagram obtained when iterating the PCA starting from its Bernoulli product invariant measure. It is a non-trivial random field with very weak dependences and nice combinatorial properties. In particular, not only the horizontal lines but also the lines in any other direction consist in i.i.d. random variables. We study extensions of the results to Markovian invariant measures, and to PCA with larger alphabets and neighborhoods.

Synthesis and Analysis of Product-form Petri Nets

For a large Markovian model, a "product form" is an explicit description of the steady-state behaviour which is otherwise generally untractable. Being first introduced in queueing networks, it has been adapted to Markovian Petri nets. Here we address three relevant issues for product-form Petri nets which were left fully or partially open: (1) we provide a sound and complete set of rules for the synthesis; (2) we characterise the exact complexity of classical problems like reachability; (3) we introduce a new subclass for which the normalising constant (a crucial value for product-form expression) can be efficiently computed.

Density classification on infinite lattices and trees

Consider an infinite graph with nodes initially labeled by independent Bernoulli random variables of parameter p. We address the density classification problem, that is, we want to design a (probabilistic or deterministic) cellular automaton or a finite-range interacting particle system that evolves on this graph and decides whether p is smaller or larger than 1/2. Precisely, the trajectories should converge to the uniform configuration with only 0's if p<1/2, and only 1's if p>1/2. We present solutions to that problem on the d-dimensional lattice, for any d>1, and on the regular infinite trees. For Z, we propose some candidates that we back up with numerical simulations.

On the Finiteness Problem for Automaton (Semi)groups

This paper addresses a decision problem highlighted by Grigorchuk, Nekrashevich, and Sushchanskii, namely the finiteness problem for automaton (semi)groups. For semigroups, we give an effective sufficient but not necessary condition for finiteness and, for groups, an effective necessary but not sufficient condition. The efficiency of the new criteria is demonstrated by testing all Mealy automata with small stateset and alphabet. Finally, for groups, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition that does not directly lead to a decision procedure.

Probabilistic cellular automata, invariant measures, and perfect sampling

A probabilistic cellular automaton (PCA) can be viewed as a Markov chain. The cells are updated synchronously and independently, according to a distribution depending on a finite neighborhood. We investigate the ergodicity of this Markov chain. A classical cellular automaton is a particular case of PCA. For a 1-dimensional cellular automaton, we prove that ergodicity is equivalent to nilpotency, and is therefore undecidable. We then propose an efficient perfect sampling algorithm for the invariant measure of an ergodic PCA. Our algorithm does not assume any monotonicity property of the local rule. It is based on a bounding process which is shown to be also a PCA. Last, we focus on the PCA Majority, whose asymptotic behavior is unknown, and perform numerical experiments using the perfect sampling procedure.
