Cartan subalgebras in W*-algebras

This article presents a proof of the Feldman-Moore theorem on Cartan subalgebras in W*-algebras based on the non-commutative Stone equivalence between Boolean inverse semigroups and Boolean groupoids. The proof is decomposed into two parts. The first part writes the W*-algebra as the W*-algebra of the Weyl twist of the Cartan subalgebra. The second part is an extension to separable measure inverse semigroups of the realization of a separable measure algebra by a standard measure space.

The C*-algebra of a twisted groupoid extension

This article extends the main results of the publication arXiv:2001.01312 to the case of a twisted groupoid. More precisely, it gives a decomposition of the C*-algebra of a twisted locally compact groupoid with Haar system in presence of a normal subgroupoid. When the normal subgroupoid and the twist over it are abelian, one obtains another twisted groupoid C*-algebra. This is applied to C*-algebraic deformation quantization and to multiplier representations of locally compact abelian groups.

Continuity of the Haar dual measure

Given a locally compact group bundle, we show that the system of the Plancherel weights of their C*-algebras is lower semi-continuous. As a corollary, we obtain that the dual Haar sytem of a continuous Haar system of a locally compact abelian group bundle is also continuous.

Random walks on Bratteli diagrams

In the eighties, A. Connes and E. J. Woods made a connection between hyperfinite von Neumann algebras and Poisson boundaries of time dependent random walks. The present paper explains this connection and gives a detailed proof of two theorems quoted there: the construction of a large class of states on a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra (due to A. Connes) and the ergodic decomposition of a Markov measure via harmonic functions (a classical result in probability theory). The crux of the first theorem is a model for conditional expectations on finite dimensional C*-algebras. The proof of the second theorem hinges on the notion of cotransition probability.

Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras. Existence and uniqueness

We initiate the study of Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras, with a particular focus on existence and uniqueness questions. For homogeneous C*-algebras, these questions can be analysed systematically using the theory of fibre bundles. For group C*-algebras, while we are able to find Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras of many connected Lie groups, there are classes of (discrete) groups, for instance non-abelian free groups, whose reduced group C*-algebras do not have any Cartan subalgebras. Moreover, we show that uniqueness of Cartan subalgebras usually fails for classifiable C*-algebras. However, distinguished Cartan subalgebras exist in some cases, for instance in nuclear Roe algebras.

Groupoids associated to semigroup actions

In this paper, we consider topological semigroup actions on compact topological spaces. Under mild assumptions on the semigroup and the action, we construct a semi-direct product groupoid with a Haar system. We also show that it is equivalent to a transformation groupoid. We apply this construction to the Wiener-Hopf $C^{*}$-algebras.

Induced Representations and Hypergroupoids

We review various notions of correspondences for locally compact groupoids with Haar systems, in particular a recent definition due to R.D. Holkar. We give the construction of the representations induced by such a correspondence. Finally, we extend the construction of induced representations to hypergroupoids.

Hypergroupoids and C*-algebras

Let $G$ be a locally compact groupoid. If $X$ is a free and proper $G$-space, then $(X*X)/G$ is a groupoid equivalent to $G$. We consider the situation where $X$ is proper but no longer free. The formalism of groupoid C*-algebras and their representations is suitable to attach C*-algebras to this new object.

Topological amenability is a Borel property

We establish that a second countable locally compact groupoid possessing a continuous Haar system is topologically amenable if and only if it is Borel amenable. We give some examples and applications.

Groupoid cocycles and derivations

This is a study of derivations constructed from conditionally negative type functions on groupoids which illustrates Sauvageot's theory of non-commutative Dirichlet forms.

Continuous bounded cocycles

Let $G$ be a minimal locally compact groupoid with compact metrizable unit space and let $E$ be a continuous $G$-Hilbert bundle. We show that a bounded continuous cocycle $c: G\ra r^*E$ is necessarily a continuous coboundary. This is a groupoid version of a classical theorem of Gottschalk and Hedlund.

Examples of masas in C*-algebras

This paper illustrates the notion of a Cartan subalgebra in a C*-algebra through a number of examples and counterexamples. Some of these examples have a geometrical flavour and are related to orbifolds and non-Hausdorff manifolds.

A Hausdorff-Young inequality for measured groupoids

The classical Hausdorff-Young inequality for locally compact abelian groups states that, for $1\le p\le 2$, the $L^p$-norm of a function dominates the $L^q$-norm of its Fourier transform, where $1/p+1/q=1$. By using the theory of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces and by reinterpreting the Fourier transform, R. Kunze (1958) [resp. M. Terp (1980)] extended this inequality to unimodular [resp. non-unimodular] groups. The analysis of the $L^p$-spaces of the von Neumann algebra of a measured groupoid provides a further extension of the Hausdorff-Young inequality to measured groupoids.

Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras

According to J. Feldman and C. Moore's well-known theorem on Cartan subalgebras, a variant of the group measure space construction gives an equivalence of categories between twisted countable standard measured equivalence relations and Cartan pairs, i.e. a von Neumann algebra (on a separable Hilbert space) together with a Cartan subalgebra. A. Kumjian gave a C*-algebraic analogue of this theorem in the early eighties. After a short survey of maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras in operator algebras, I present a natural definition of a Cartan subalgebra in a C*-algebra and an extension of Kumjian's theorem which covers graph algebras and some foliation algebras.

Semigroups of local homeomorphisms and interaction groups

Given a semigroup of local homeomorphisms on a compact space X we consider the corresponding semigroup of *-endomorphisms on C(X) and discuss the possibility of extending it to an interaction group, a concept recently introduced by the first named author. Under suitable hypotheses we may also define a transformation groupoid whose C*-algebra turns out to be isomorphic to the crossed product algebra for the interaction group. Several examples are considered, including one which gives rise to a slightly different construction and should be interpreted as being the C*-algebra of a certain polymorphism.

KMS states on C*-algebras associated to expansive maps

Using Walters' version of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius Theorem we show the existence and uniqueness of KMS states for a certain one-parameter group of automorphisms on a C*-algebra associated to a positively expansive map on a compact metric space.

The Radon-Nikodym problem for approximately proper equivalence relations

We study the Radon-Nikodym problem for approximately proper equivalence relations and more specifically the uniqueness of certain Gibbs states. One of our tools is a variant of the dimension group introduced in the study of AF algebras. As applications, we retrieve sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of traces on AF algebras and parts of the Perron-Frobenius-Ruelle theorem.

AF-equivalence relations and their cocycles

After a review of some of the main results about hyperfinite equivalence relations and their cocycles in the measured setting, we give a definition of a topological AF-equivalence relation. We show that every cocycle is cohomologous to a quasi-product cocycle. We then study the problem of determining the quasi-invariant probability measures admitting a given cocycle as their Radon-Nikodym derivative.
