Limiting Sobolev inequalities for vector fields and canceling linear differential operators

The estimate [\lVert D^{k-1}u\rVert_{L^{n/(n-1)}} \le \lVert A(D)u \rVert_{L^1} ] is shown to hold if and only if (A(D)) is elliptic and canceling. Here (A(D)) is a homogeneous linear differential operator (A(D)) of order (k) on (\mathbb{R}^n) from a vector space (V) to a vector space (E). The operator (A(D)) is defined to be canceling if [\bigcap_{ξ\in \mathbb{R}^n \setminus {0}} A(ξ)[V]={0}.] This result implies in particular the classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality, the Korn-Sobolev inequality and Hodge-Sobolev estimates for differential forms due to J. Bourgain and H. Brezis. In the proof, the class of cocanceling homogeneous linear differential operator (L(D)) of order (k) on (\mathbb{R}^n) from a vector space (E) to a vector space (F) is introduced. It is proved that (L(D)) is cocanceling if and only if for every (f \in L^1(\mathbb{R}^n; E)) such that (L(D)f=0), one has (f \in \dot{W}^{-1, n/(n-1)}(\mathbb{R}^n; E)). The results extend to fractional and Lorentz spaces and can be strengthened using some tools of J. Bourgain and H. Brezis.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with unbounded or vanishing potentials: solutions concentrating on lower dimensional spheres

We study positive bound states for the semiclassical stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We are especially interested in solutions which concentrate on a lower dimensional sphere. We adopt a purely variational approach which allows us to consider broader classes of potentials than those treated in previous works. For example, the potentials might be singular at the origin or vanish superquadratically at infinity.

Extremal functions in Poincare-Sobolev inequalities for functions of bounded variation

If $Ω\subset \R^n$ is a smooth bounded domain and $q \in (0, \frac{n}{n-1})$ we consider the Poincare-Sobolev inequality \[ c \Bigl(\int_Ω \abs{u}^\frac{n}{n-1}\Bigr)^{1-\frac{1}{n}} \le \int_Ω \abs{Du}, \] for every $u \in \mathrm{BV}(Ω)$ such that $\int_Ω \abs{u}^{q-1} u = 0$. We show that the sharp constant is achieved. We also consider the same inequality on an $n$--dimensional compact Riemannian manifold $M$. When $n \ge 3$ and the scalar curvature is positive at some point, then the sharp constant is achieved. In the case $n \ge 2$, we need the maximal scalar curvature to satisfy some strict inequality.

Desingularization of vortices for the Euler equation

We study the existence of stationary classical solutions of the incompressible Euler equation in the plane that approximate singular stationnary solutions of this equation. The construction is performed by studying the asymptotics of equation $-\eps^2 Δu^\eps=(u^\eps-q-\fracκ{2π} \log \frac{1}{\eps})_+^p$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions and $q$ a given function. We also study the desingularization of pairs of vortices by minimal energy nodal solutions and the desingularization of rotating vortices.

Pathological solutions to elliptic problems in divergence form with continuous coefficients

We construct a function $u \in W^{1,1}_{\mathrm{loc}} (B(0,1))$ which is a solution to $\Div (A \nabla u)=0$ in the sense of distributions, where $A$ is continuous and $u \not \in W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}} (B(0,1))$ for $p > 1$. We also give a function $u \in W^{1,1}_{\mathrm{loc}} (B(0,1))$ such that $u \in W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}(B(0,1))$ for every $p < \infty$, $u$ satisfies $\Div (A \nabla u)=0$ with $A$ continuous but $u \not \in W^{1, \infty}_{\mathrm{loc}}(B(0,1))$.

Semiclassical stationary states for nonlinear Schroedinger equations with fast decaying potentials

We study the existence of stationnary positive solutions for a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a nonnegative continuous potential V. Amongst other results, we prove that if V has a positive local minimum, and if the exponent of the nonlinearity satisfies N/(N-2)<p<(N+2)/(N-2), then for small epsilon the problem admits positive solutions which concentrate as epsilon goes to 0 around the local minimum point of V. The novelty is that no restriction is imposed on the rate of decay of V. In particular, we cover the case where V is compactly supported.

Closure of Smooth Maps in $W^{1,p}(B^3;S^2)$

For every $2 < p < 3$, we show that $u \in W^{1,p}(B^3; S^2)$ can be strongly approximated by maps in $C^\infty(\Bar{B}^3; S^2)$ if, and only if, the distributional Jacobian of $u$ vanishes identically. This result was originally proved by Bethuel-Coron-Demengel-Helein, but we present a different strategy which is motivated by the $W^{2,p}$-case.

Subelliptic Bourgain-Brezis Estimates on Groups

We show that divergence free vector fields which belong to L^1 on stratified, nilpotent groups are in the dual space of functions whose sub-gradient are L^Q integrable where Q is the homogeneous dimension of the group. This was first obtained on Euclidean space by Bourgain and Brezis.
