A Turbulent Origin for Flocculent Spiral Structure in Galaxies: II. Observations and Models of M33

Fourier transform power spectra of azimuthal scans of the optical structure of M33 are evaluated for B, V, and R passbands and fit to fractal models of continuum emission with superposed star formation. Power spectra are also determined for Halpha. The best models have intrinsic power spectra with 1D slopes of around -0.7pm0.7, significantly shallower than the Kolmogorov spectrum (slope =-1.7) but steeper than pure noise (slope=0). A fit to the power spectrum of the flocculent galaxy NGC 5055 gives a steeper slope of around -1.5pm0.2, which could be from turbulence. Both cases model the optical light as a superposition of continuous and point-like stellar sources that follow an underlying fractal pattern. Foreground bright stars are clipped in the images, but they are so prominent in M33 that even their residual affects the power spectrum, making it shallower than what is intrinsic to the galaxy. A model consisting of random foreground stars added to the best model of NGC 5055 fits the observed power spectrum of M33 as well as the shallower intrinsic power spectrum that was made without foreground stars. Thus the optical structure in M33 could result from turbulence too.

The CFHT Open Star Cluster Survey I -- Cluster Selection and Data Reduction

We present this paper in conjuction with the following as the first results in the CFHT Open Star Cluster Survey. This survey is a large BVR imaging data set of 19 open star clusters in our Galaxy. This data set was taken with the CFH12K mosaic CCD (42' X 28') and the majority of the clusters were imaged under excellent photometric, sub-arcsecond seeing conditions. The combination of multiple exposures extending to deep (V ~ 25) magnitudes with short (< 10 second) frames allows for many different studies. The primary aim of this survey is to catalogue the white dwarf stars in these clusters and establish observational constraints on the initial-final mass relationship for these stars and the upper mass limit to white dwarf production. Additionally, we hope to better determine the properties of the clusters, such as age and distance, and also test evolution and dynamical theories by analyzing luminosity and mass functions. In order to more easily incorporate this data in further studies, we have produced a catalogue of positions, magnitudes, colors, and stellarity confidence for all stars in each cluster of the survey. This paper is intended both as a source for the astronomical community to obtain information on the clusters in the survey and as a detailed reference of reduction procedures for further publications of individual clusters. We discuss the methods employed to reduce the data and compute the photometric catalogue. The scientific results for each individual cluster and global results from the study of the entire survey will be presented in further publications (results for the rich old open cluster NGC 6819 immediately follow this paper).

The CFHT Open Star Cluster Survey II -- Deep CCD Photometry of the Old Open Star Cluster NGC 6819

We present analysis of deep CCD photometry for the very rich, old open star cluster NGC 6819. These CFH12K data results represent the first of nineteen open star clusters which were imaged as a part of the CFHT Open Star Cluster Survey. We find a tight, very rich, main-sequence and turn-off consisting of over 2900 cluster stars in the V, B-V color-magnitude diagram (CMD). Main-sequence fitting of the un-evolved cluster stars with the Hyades star cluster yields a distance modulus of (m-M)v = 12.30 +/- 0.12, for a reddening of E(B-V) = 0.10. These values are consistent with a newly calculated theoretical stellar isochrone of age 2.5 Gyrs, which we take to be the age of the cluster. Detailed star counts indicate a much larger cluster extent (R = 9.5' +/- 1.0'), by a factor of ~2 over some previous estimates. Incompleteness tests confirm a slightly negatively sloped luminosity function extending to faint (V ~ 23) magnitudes which is indicative of a dynamically evolved cluster. Further luminosity function and mass segregation tests indicate that low mass objects (M < 0.65Mo) predominate in the outer regions of the cluster, 3.5 < R < 9.5. The estimation of the number of white dwarfs in NGC 6819 are in good agreement with the observed number. For those white dwarf candidates which pass both a statistical and image classification tests, we show comparisons to white dwarf isochrones and cooling models which suggest the need for spectroscopy to confirm the white dwarf nature of the brighter objects.

A wide-field spectroscopic survey of the cluster of galaxies Cl0024+1654: I. The catalogue

We present the catalogue of a wide-field CFHT/WHT spectroscopic survey of the lensing cluster Cl0024+1654 at z=0.395. This catalogue contains 618 new spectra, of which 581 have identified redshifts. Adding redshifts available from the literature, the final catalogue contains data for 687 objects with redshifts identified for 650 of them. 295 galaxies have redshifts in the range 0.37<z<0.41, i. e. are cluster members or lie in the immediate neighbourhood of the cluster. The area covered by the survey is 21x25 arcmin2 in size, corresponding to 4x4.8 h^-2 Mpc2 at the cluster redshift. The survey is 45% complete down to V=22 over the whole field covered; within 3 arcmin of the cluster centre the completeness exceeds 80% at the same magnitude. A detailed completeness analysis is presented. The catalogue gives astrometric position, redshift, V magnitude and V-I colour, as well as the equivalent widths for a number of lines. Apart from the cluster Cl0024+1654 itself, three other structures are identified in redshift space: a group of galaxies at z=0.38, just in front of Cl0024+1654 and probably interacting with it, a close pair of groups of galaxies at z~0.495 and an overdensity of galaxies at z~0.18 with no obvious centre. The spectroscopic catalogue will be used to trace the three-dimensional structure of the cluster Cl0024+1654 as well as study the physical properties of the galaxies in the cluster and in its environment.

Gas, Dust, and Young Stars in the Outer Disk of M 31

Using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope we have obtained deep high-resolution CCD images in V and I of a 28'x28' field in the outer disk of M 31 at ~ 116' from the center along the major axis to the south-west, and covering a range of projected galactocentric distance from about 23 to 33 kpc. The field was chosen to correspond with extended HI features recorded near the HI edge of the galaxy. The many tens of thousands of objects detected in this large field have been classified using an automatic algorithm which distinguishes unresolved from resolved structures and provides photometry on them. For the most part the unresolved objects are stars in M 31. The V-I colors of these stars are highly correlated with the column density of HI in the field. Assuming a Galactic extinction law, this yields a minimum extinction/atomic-gas ratio about 1/3 of that in the Solar neighbourhood. The ISM in this outer disk of M 31 therefore contains substantial amounts of dust. We have identified a population of B stars in the field whose distribution is also well correlated with the extended HI distribution. Evidently, star formation is both ongoing and wide spread in the outer disk of M 31. According to the current view of the star formation process, molecular gas is therefore also expected to be present.

A Wide-Field Spectroscopic Survey In The Cluster Lens Cl0024+17

We present a detailed velocity histogram from a wide-field spectroscopic survey in the field of the cluster lens Cl0024 showing an unrelaxed foreground structure in addition to the relaxed main cluster. This finding reduces the velocity dispersion of the main cluster compared to previous studies by a factor of about 2 and thus resolves the discrepancy between previous mass estimates for this cluster.
