Inequalities for exchange Slater integrals

The variations of exchange Slater integrals with respect to their order $k$ are not well known. While direct Slater integrals $F^k$ are positive and decreasing when the order increases, this is not stricto sensu the case for exchange integrals $G^k$. However, two inequalities were published by Racah in his seminal article "Theory of complex spectra. II". In this article, we show that the technique used by Racah can be generalized, albeit with cumbersome calculations, to derive further relations, and provide two of them, involving respectively three and four exchange integrals. Such relations can prove useful to detect regularities in complex atomic spectra and classify energy levels.

An integral representation for $ζ(4)$

In this note, we propose an integral representation for $ζ(4)$, where $ζ$ is the Riemann zeta function. The corresponding expression is obtained using relations for polylogarithms. A possible generalization to any even argument of the zeta function is considered.

A fast approximation to supershell partition functions

A formula for supershell partition functions, which play a major role in the Super Transition Array approach to radiative-opacity calculations, is derived as a functional of the distribution of energies within the supershell. It consists in an alternative expansion for an arbitrary number of electrons or holes which also allows for quick approximate evaluations with truncated number of terms in the expansion.

Closed forms of the Zassenhaus formula

The Zassenhaus formula finds many applications in theoretical physics or mathematics, from fluid dynamics to differential geometry. The non-commutativity of the elements of the algebra implies that the exponential of a sum of operators cannot be expressed as the product of exponentials of operators. The exponential of the sum can then be decomposed as the product of the exponentials multiplied by a supplementary term which takes generally the form of an infinite product of exponentials. Such a procedure is often referred to as ``disentanglement''. However, for some special commutators, closed forms can be found. In this work, we propose a closed form for the Zassenhaus formula when the commutator of operators $\hat{X}$ and $\hat{Y}$ satisfy the relation $[\hat{X},\hat{Y}]=u\hat{X}+v\hat{Y}+c\mathcal{I}$. Such an expression boils down to three equivalent versions, a left-sided, a centered and a right-sided formula: \begin{equation*} e^{\hat{X}+\hat{Y}}=e^{\hat{X}}e^{\hat{Y}}e^{g_{r}(u,v)[\hat{X},\hat{Y}]}=e^{\hat{X}}e^{g_{c}(u,v)[\hat{X},\hat{Y}]}e^{\hat{Y}}=e^{g_{\ell}(u,v)[\hat{X},\hat{Y}]}e^{\hat{X}}e^{\hat{Y}}, \end{equation*} with respective arguments, \begin{eqnarray*} g_{r}(u,v)&=&g_{c}(v,u)e^{u}=g_{\ell}(v,u)=\frac{u\left(e^{u-v}-e^{u}\right)+v\left(e^{u}-1\right)}{vu(u-v)} \end{eqnarray*} for $u\ne v$ and \begin{eqnarray*} g_{r}(u,u)=\frac{u+1-e^u}{u^2}\;\;\;\;\mathrm{with}\;\;\;\; g_r(0,0)=-1/2. \end{eqnarray*} With additional special case \begin{eqnarray*} g_{r}(0,v)= -\frac{e^{-v}-1+v}{v^{2}}, \quad & g_{r}(u,0)=\frac{e^{u}(1-u)-1}{u^{2}}. \end{eqnarray*}

Sommerfeld expansion of electronic entropy in INFERNO-like average atom model

In average atom (AA) model, the entropy provides a route to compute thermal electronic contributions to the equation of state (EOS). The complete EOS comprises in many modelings an additional 0K-isotherm and a thermal ionic part. Even at low temperature, the AA model is believed to be the best practical approach. However, when it comes to determine the thermal electronic EOS at low temperatures, the numerical implementation of AA models faces convergence issues related to the pressure ionization of bound states. At contrast, the Sommerfeld expansion tells us that the variations with temperature of thermodynamic variables should express in simple terms at these low temperatures. This led us to tackle the AA predictions with respect to the Sommerfeld expansion of the electronic entropy. We performed a comprehensive investigation for various chemical elements belonging to $s-$, $p-$, $d-$, and $f-$blocks of the periodic table, at varying densities. This was realized using an Inferno-like model since this approach provides the best theoretical framework to address these issues. Practical prescriptions are provided as functions of the atomic number.

Relations for the difference of two dilogarithms

In this work, we propose a double-series representation of the difference between two dilogarithms with specific arguments. The summation is derived combining a formula we recently found for the so-called Grotendieck-Krivine constant, and an identity obtained by Lima for the difference of two dilogarithms with arguments $\sqrt{2}-1$ and $1-\sqrt{2}$ respectively. We also give an integral representation of the difference considered by Lima, on the basis of a formula published by Brychkov.

An exact series expansion for the Dottie number

In this article, an exact series expansion for the Dottie number (solution of the equation $\cos(x) = x$) is presented. Its derivation consists in combining the Kaplan representation of the Dottie number as a series in odd powers of $π$, with a series for $π^{2k+1}$ ($k\geq 1$) obtained using the Faà di Bruno formula.

Normalized centered moments of the Fréchet extreme-value distribution and inference of its parameter

In the present work, we provide the general expression of the normalized centered moments of the Fréchet extreme-value distribution. In order to try to represent a set of data corresponding to rare events by a Fréchet distribution, it is important to be able to determine its characteristic parameter $α$. Such a parameter can be deduced from the variance (proportional to the square of the Full Width at Half Maximum) of the studied distribution. However, the corresponding equation requires a numerical resolution. We propose two simple estimates of $α$ from the knowledge of the variance, based on the Laurent series of the Gamma function. The most accurate expression involves the Apéry constant.

A prime sum involving Bernoulli numbers

In this note, we propose simple summations for primes, which involve two finite nested sums and Bernoulli numbers. The summations can also be expressed in terms of Bernoulli polynomials.

Schroedinger equation on a generic radial grid

In this note, we discuss the choice of radial grid in the numerical resolution of the Schroedinger equation. We detail the transformation of the equation resulting from a change of variable and function for a generic radial grid, using either the explicit or implicit form of the relation describing the change of variable, and apply it to the $a r + b \ln(r)$ log-linear mesh. It is shown that, in the former case, the first three derivatives of the Lambert $W$ function are required. This complication becomes unnecessary if we adopt the implicit relation instead.

Benford's law and complex atomic spectra

We found that in transition arrays of complex atomic spectra, the strengths of electric-dipolar lines obey Benford's law, which means that their significant digits follow a logarithmic distribution favoring the smallest values. This indicates that atomic processes result from the superposition of uncorrelated probability laws and that the occurrence of digits reflects the constraints induced by the selection rules. Furthermore, Benford's law can be a useful test of theoretical spectroscopic models. Its applicability to the statistics of electric-dipolar lines can be understood in the framework of random matrix theory and is consistent with the Porter-Thomas law.

A summation formula for generalized $k$-bonacci numbers

In this note, we present a simple summation formula for $k$-bonacci numbers. The derivation consists in obtaining the generating function of such numbers, and noting that its evaluation at a particular value yields a formula generalizing a known expression for Fibonacci numbers.

New series representations for any positive power of $π$ from a relation involving trigonometric functions

In previous works, we presented series representations for $π^3$ and $π^5$, in which the prefactor depends only on the golden ratio appears. In this article, we derive a general relation involving trigonometric functions and an infinite series. Such an identity is likely to provide many series representations for any positive power of $π$, among them the above mentioned representations for $π^3$ and $π^5$.

Series representations for $π^3$ involving the golden ratio

Although many series exist for $π$ and $π^2$, very few are known for $π^3$. In this article, we derive, using a trigonometric identity obtained by Euler, two representations of $π^3$ involving infinite sums and the golden ratio. The methodology can be generalized in order to obtain further series, relating by the way $π^3$ to other mathematical constants.
