Stable sets of certain non-uniformly hyperbolic horseshoes have the expected dimension

We show that the stable and unstable sets of non-uniformly hyperbolic horseshoes arising in some heteroclinic bifurcations of surface diffeomorphisms have the value conjectured in a previous work by the second and third authors of the present paper. Our results apply to first heteroclinic bifurcations associated to horseshoes with Hausdorff dimension $<22/21$ of conservative surface diffeomorphisms.

Strong regularity

This is an introduction of a book called "strong regularity", to appear at Astérisque, containing: 1) Yoccoz' proof of Jakobson theorem www.college-de-france.fr/media/jean-christophe-yoccoz/UPL7416254474776698194_Jakobson_jcy.pdf 2) Berger's proof of the abundance of non-uniformly hyperbolic Hénon like endomorphisms arxiv.org/abs/0903.1473 It gives an overview of the main examples and conjectures of non-uniformly hyperbolic set for low dimensional dynamical systems. It compares the proofs of parameter selections based on the concept of binding with those based on the one of strong regularity.

On Roth type conditions, duality and central Birkhoff sums for i.e.m

We introduce two Diophantine conditions on rotation numbers of interval exchange maps (i.e.m) and translation surfaces: the \emph{absolute Roth type condition} is a weakening of the notion of Roth type i.e.m., while the \emph{dual Roth type} condition is a condition on the \emph{backward} rotation number of a translation surface. We show that results on the cohomological equation previously proved in \cite{MY} for restricted Roth type i.e.m. (on the solvability under finitely many obstructions and the regularity of the solutions) can be extended to restricted \emph{absolute} Roth type i.e.m. Under the dual Roth type condition, we associate to a class of functions with \emph{subpolynomial} deviations of ergodic averages (corresponding to relative homology classes) \emph{distributional} limit shapes, which are constructed in a similar way to the \emph{limit shapes} of Birkhoff sums associated in \cite{MMY3} to functions which correspond to positive Lyapunov exponents.

Zorich conjecture for hyperelliptic Rauzy-Veech groups

We describe the structure of hyperelliptic Rauzy diagrams and hyperelliptic Rauzy-Veech groups. In particular, this provides a solution of the hyperelliptic cases of a conjecture of Zorich on the Zariski closure of Rauzy-Veech groups.

A criterion for the simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum of square-tiled surfaces

We present a Galois-theoretical criterion for the simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle over the Teichmueller flow on the $SL_2(R)$-orbit of a square-tiled surface. The simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum has been proved by A. Avila and M. Viana with respect to the so-called Masur-Veech measures associated to connected components of moduli spaces of translation surfaces, but is not always true for square-tiled surfaces of genus $\geq 3$. We apply our criterion to square-tiled surfaces of genus 3 with one single zero. Conditionally to a conjecture of Delecroix and Lelièvre, we prove with the aid of Siegel's theorem (on integral points on algebraic curves of genus $>0$) that all but finitely many such square-tiled surfaces have simple Lyapunov spectrum.

Homology of origamis with symmetries

Given an origami (square-tiled surface) M with automorphism group G, we compute the decomposition of the first homology group of M into isotypic G-submodules. Through the action of the affine group of M on the homology group, we deduce some consequences for the multiplicities of the Lyapunov exponents of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. We also construct and study several families of interesting origamis illustrating our results.

SL(2,R)-invariant probability measures on the moduli spaces of translation surfaces are regular

In the moduli space $H_g$ of normalized translation surfaces of genus $g$, consider, for a small parameter $ρ>0$, those translation surfaces which have two non-parallel saddle-connections of length $\leq ρ$. We prove that this subset of $H_g$ has measure $o(ρ^2)$ w.r.t. any probability measure on $H_g$ which is invariant under the natural action of $SL(2,R)$. This implies that any such probability measure is regular, a property which is important in relation with the recent fundamental work of Eskin-Kontsevich-Zorich on the Lyapunov exponents of the KZ-cocycle.

Linearization of generalized interval exchange maps

A standard interval exchange map is a one-to-one map of the interval which is locally a translation except at finitely many singularities. We define for such maps, in terms of the Rauzy-Veech continuous fraction algorithm, a diophantine arithmetical condition called restricted Roth type which is almost surely satisfied in parameter space. Let $T_0$ be a standard interval exchange map of restricted Roth type, and let $r$ be an integer $\geq 2$. We prove that, amongst $C^{r+3}$ deformations of $T_0$ which are $C^{r+3}$ tangent to $T_0$ at the singularities, those which are conjugated to $T_0$ by a $C^r$ diffeomorphism close to the identity form a $C^1$ submanifold of codimension $(g-1)(2r+1) +s$. Here, $g$ is the genus and $s$ is the number of marked points of the translation surface obtained by suspension of $T_0$. Both $g$ and $s$ can be computed from the combinatorics of $T_0$.

The action of the affine diffeomorphisms on the relative homology group of certain exceptionally symmetric origamis

We compute explicitly the action of the group of affine diffeomorphisms on the relative homology of two remarkable origamis discovered respectively by Forni (in genus 3) and Forni-Matheus (in genus 4). We show that, in both cases, the action on the non trivial part of the homology is through finite groups. In particular, the action on some 4-dimensional invariant subspace of the homology leaves invariant a root system of $D_4$ type. This provides as a by-product a new proof of (slightly stronger versions of) the results of Forni and Matheus: the non trivial Lyapunov exponents of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle for the Teichmuller disks of these two origamis are equal to zero.

Uniformly Hyperbolic Finite-Valued SL(2,R)-Cocycles

We consider finite families of SL(2,R) matrices whose products display uniform exponential growth. These form open subsets of (SL(2,R))^N, and we study their components, boundary, and complement. We also consider the more general situation where the allowed products of matrices satisfy a Markovian rule.

CR manifolds admitting a CR contraction

We classify the germs of $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ CR manifolds that admit a smooth CR contraction. We show that such a CR manifold is embedded into $\CC^n$ as a real hypersurface defined by a polynomial defining function consisting of monomials whose degrees are completely determined by the extended resonances of the contraction. Furthermore the contraction map extends to a holomorphic contraction that coincides in fact with its polynomial normal form. Consequently, several results concerning Complex and CR geometry are derived.

Non-Uniformly Hyperbolic Horseshoes Arising from Bifurcations of Poincaré Heteroclinic Cycles

The purpose of this paper is to advance the knowledge of the dynamics arising from the creation and subsequent bifurcation of Poincaré heteroclinic cycles. The problem is central to dynamics: it has to be addressed if, for instance, one aims at describing the typical orbit behaviour of a typical system, thus providing a global scenario for the ensemble of dynamical systems - see the Introduction and [P1, P2]. Here, we shall consider smooth, i.e. $C^\infty$, one-parameter families of dissipative, meaning non-conservative, surface diffeomorphisms. An hetereoclinic cycle may appear when the parameter evolves and an orbit of tangency, say quadratic, is created between stable and unstable manifolds (lines) of periodic orbits that belong to a basic hyperbolic set. The key novelty is to allow this basic set, a horseshoe, to have Hausdorff dimension bigger than one. In the present paper we do assume such a dimension to be beyond one, but in a limited way, as explicitly indicated in the Introduction. [A mild non-degeneracy condition on the family of maps is assumed: at the orbit of tangency the invariant lines, stable and unstable, cross each other with positive relative speed]. We then prove that most diffeomorphisms, corresponding to parameter values near the bifurcating one, are non-uniformly hyperbolic in a neighborhood of the horseshoe and the orbit of tangency; such diffeomorphisms display no attractors nor repellors in such a neighborhood. A first precise formulation of our main theorem is at the Introduction and a more encompassing version at the end of the paper. These results were announced in [PY3].

Exponential mixing for the Teichmuller flow

We study the dynamics of the Teichmuller flow in the moduli space of Abelian differentials (and more generally, its restriction to any connected component of a stratum). We show that the (Masur-Veech) absolutely continuous invariant probability measure is exponentially mixing for the class of Holder observables. A geometric consequence is that the $\SL(2,\R)$ action in the moduli space has a spectral gap.

The cohomological equation for Roth type interval exchange maps

We exhibit an explicit full measure class of minimal interval exchange maps T for which the cohomological equation $Ψ-Ψ\circ T=Φ$ has a bounded solution $Ψ$ provided that the datum $Φ$ belongs to a finite codimension subspace of the space of functions having on each interval a derivative of bounded variation.
