Compressibility crossover and quantum opening of a gap for two dimensional disordered clusters with Coulomb repulsion

Using Hartree-Fock orbitals with residual Coulomb repulsion, we study spinless fermions in a two dimensional random potential. When we increase the system size $L$ at fixed particle density, the size dependence of the average inverse compressibility exhibits a smooth crossover from a $1/L^2$ towards a 1/L decay when the Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s$ increases from 0 to 3. In contrast, the distribution of the first energy excitation displays a sharp Poisson-Wigner-like transition at $r_s \approx 1$.

Delocalized Coulomb phase in two dimensions

Extending finite size scaling theory to the many body ground state, one finds that Coulomb repulsion can drive a system of spinless fermions in a random potential from the Anderson insulator (Fermi glass of localized states) towards a new extended phase in dimension $d=2$. The transition occurs at a Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s \approx 4$, where a change in the nature of the persistent currents has been previously observed. Relevance to the recently observed $2d$ metallic phase is suggested.

Two interacting particles in a disordered chain III: Dynamical aspects of the interplay disorder-interaction

The interplay between the quantum interferences responsible for one particle localization over a length L_1, and the partial dephasing induced by a local interaction of strength U with another particle leading to partial delocalization over a length L_2 > L_1, is illustrated by a study of the motion of two particles put close to each other at the initial time. Localization is reached in two steps. First, before the time t_1 necessary to propagate over L_1, the interaction slows down the ballistic motion. On the contrary, after t_1 the interaction favors a very slow delocalization, characterized by a $\log(t)$ spreading of the center of mass, until L_2 is reached. This slow motion is related to the absence of quantum chaos in this one dimensional model, the interaction being only able to induce weaker chaos with critical spectral statistics. Under appropriate initial conditions, the motion remains invariant under the duality transformation mapping the behavior at small U onto the behavior at large U.

Metallic phase between the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal in two dimensions

For intermediate Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratios $r_s$, spinless fermions in a two-dimensional random potential form a new quantum phase, different from the Fermi glass (weakly interacting Anderson localized states) and the Wigner crystal (regular array of charges pinned by the disorder). The intermediate phase is characterized by an ordered flow of persistent currents with a typical value decreasing with excitation energy. Extending finite size scaling analysis to the many body ground state, we find that electron-electron interactions can drive the Fermi glass towards an intermediate metallic phase (Coulomb metal).

Quantum opening of the Coulomb gap in two dimensions

For a constant density of spinless fermions in strongly disordered two dimensional clusters, the energy level spacing between the ground state and the first excitation is studied for increasing system sizes. The average indicates a smooth opening of the gap when the Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratio $r_s$ increases from 0 to 3, while the distribution exhibits a sharp Poisson-Wigner-like transition at $r_s \approx 1$. The results are related to the transition from Mott to Efros-Shklovskii hopping conductivity recently observed at a similar ratio $r_s$.

Intermediate Regime between the Fermi Glass and the Mott Insulator in one Dimension

We consider the ground state reorganization driven by an increasing nearest neighbor repulsion U for spinless fermions in a strongly disordered ring. When U -> 0, the electrons form a glass with Anderson localized states. At half filling, a regular array of charges (Mott insulator) is pinned by the random substrate when U -> \infty. Between those two insulating limits, we show that there is an intermediate regime where the electron glass becomes more liquid before crystallizing. The liquid-like behavior of the density-density correlation function is accompanied by an enhancement of the persistent current.

A new quantum phase in two dimensions

For intermediate Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratios $r_s$, spinless fermions in a random potential form a new quantum phase which is different from the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal. From a numerical study of small clusters, we show that this phase is characterized by an ordered flow of enhanced persistent currents and occurs for $r_s$ values where a metallic phase has been observed in two dimensions.

A new quantum phase between the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal in two dimensions

For intermediate Coulomb energy to Fermi energy ratios $r_s$, spinless fermions in a random potential form a new quantum phase which is nor a Fermi glass, neither a Wigner crystal. Studying small clusters, we show that this phase gives rise to an ordered flow of enhanced persistent currents, for disorder strength and ratios $r_s$ where a metallic phase has been recently observed in two dimensions.

New state of the matter between the Fermi glass and the Wigner crystal in two dimensions

Spinless fermions with Coulomb interaction in a square disordered lattice form a new state of the matter which is nor a Fermi glass, neither a Wigner crystal for intermediate Coulomb interaction. From a numerical study of small clusters, we find that this new state occurs between the two critical carrier densities where insulator-metal-insulator transitions of a hole gas have been observed in GaAs.

Two interacting particles in a disordered chain I: Multifractality of the interaction matrix elements

For $N$ interacting particles in a one dimensional random potential, we study the structure of the corresponding network in Hilbert space. The states without interaction play the role of the ``sites''. The hopping terms are induced by the interaction. When the one body states are localized, we numerically find that the set of directly connected ``sites'' is multifractal. For the case of two interacting particles, the fractal dimension associated to the second moment of the hopping term is shown to characterize the Golden rule decay of the non interacting states and the enhancement factor of the localization length.

Two interacting particles in a disordered chain II: Critical statistics and maximum mixing of the one body states

For two particles in a disordered chain of length $L$ with on-site interaction $U$, a duality transformation maps the behavior at weak interaction onto the behavior at strong interaction. Around the fixed point of this transformation, the interaction yields a maximum mixing of the one body states. When $L \approx L_1$ (the one particle localization length), this mixing results in weak chaos accompanied by multifractal wave functions and critical spectral statistics, as in the one particle problem at the mobility edge or in certain pseudo-integrable billiards. In one dimension, a local interaction can only yield this weak chaos but can never drive the two particle system to full chaos with Wigner-Dyson statistics.

From the Fermi glass towards the Mott insulator in one dimension: Delocalization and strongly enhanced persistent currents

When a system of spinless fermions in a disordered mesoscopic ring becomes instable between the inhomogeneous configuration driven by the random potential (Anderson insulator) and the homogeneous one driven by repulsive interactions (Mott insulator), the persistent current can be enhanced by orders of magnitude. This is illustrated by a study of the change of the ground state energy under twisted boundary conditions using the density matrix renormalization group algorithm.

Thouless numbers for few-particle systems with disorder and interactions

Considering N spinless Fermions in a random potential, we study how a short range pairwise interaction delocalizes the N-body states in the basis of the one-particle Slater determinants, and the spectral rigidity of the N-body spectrum. The maximum number g_N of consecutive levels exhibiting the universal Wigner-Dyson rigidity (the Thouless number) is given as a function of the strength U of the interaction for the bulk of the spectrum. In the dilute limit, one finds two thresholds: When U<U_{c1}, there is a perturbative mixing between a few Slater determinants (Rabi oscillations) and g_N \propto |U|^P <1, where P=N/2 (even N) or (N+1)/2 (odd N). When U=U_{c1}, the level spacing distribution exhibits a crossover from Poisson to Wigner, related to the crossover between weak perturbative mixing and effective golden-rule decay, and g_N \approx 1. Moreover, we show that the same U_{c1} signifies also the breakdown of the perturbation theory in U. For U_{c1}<U<U_{c2}, the states are extended over the energetically nearby Slater determinants with a non-ergodic hierarchical structure related to the sparse form of the Hamiltonian. Above a second threshold U_{c2}, the sparsity becomes irrelevant, and the states are extended more or less ergodically over g_N consecutive Slater determinants. A self-consistent argument gives g_N ~ U^{N/(N-1)}. We compare our predictions to a numerical study of three spinless Fermions in a disordered cubic lattice. Implications for the interaction-induced N-particle delocalization in real space are discussed. The applicability of Fermi's golden rule for decay in this dilute gas of "real" particles is compared with the one characterizing a finite-density Fermi gas. The latter is related to the recently suggested Anderson transition in Fock space.

Level curvatures, spectral statistics and scaling for interacting particles

The mobility of two interacting particles in a random potential is studied, using the sensitivity of their levels to a change of boundary conditions. The delocalization in Hilbert space induced by the interaction of the two particle Fock states is shown to decrease the mobility in metals and to increase it in insulators. In contrast to the single particle case, the spectral rigidity is not directly related to the level curvature. Therefore, another curvature of topological origin is introduced, which defines the energy scale below which the spectrum has the universal Wigner-Dyson rigidity.

Two interacting particles in a random potential: mapping onto one parameter localization theories without interaction

We consider two models for a pair of interacting particles in a random potential: (i) two particles with a Hubbard interaction in arbitrary dimensions and (ii) a strongly bound pair in one dimension. Establishing suitable correpondences we demonstrate that both cases can be described in terms familiar from theories of noninteracting particles. In particular, these two cases are shown to be controlled by a single scaling variable, namely the pair conductance $g_2$. For an attractive or repulsive Hubbard interaction and starting from a certain effective Hamiltonian we derive a supersymmetric nonlinear $σ$ model. Its action turns out to be closely related to the one found by Efetov for noninteracting electrons in disordered metals. This enables us to describe the diffusive motion of the particle pair on scales exceeding the one-particle localization length $L_1$ and to discuss the corresponding level statistics. For tightly bound pairs in one dimension, on the other hand, we follow early work by Dorokhov and exploit the analogy with the transfer matrix approach to quasi 1d conductors. Extending our study to M particles we obtain a M-particle localization length scaling like the Mth power of the one-particle localization length.

Comment on "No enhancement of the localization length for two interacting particles in a random potential"

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 515 (1997); cond-mat/9612034] Roemer and Schreiber report on numerical calculations that led them to conclude that the previously observed enhancement of the localization length $L_2$ of two interacting particles (TIP) vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. We point out that such a claim (i) is in conflict with the scaling theory of localization, (ii) ignores a consistent picture from a wealth of published numerical data and analytical investigations, and (iii) directly contradicts new numerical results obtained with a Green function method that is well adapted to the problem under study. The claim of Roemer and Schreiber is based on extrapolating from L<360 to infinity. Our data clearly shows the two particle localization length $L_2$ to be significantly enhanced and independent of system size between L=100 and L=1000, as expected on physical grounds.

Quantum interference and the spin orbit interaction in mesoscopic normal-superconducting junctions

We calculate the quantum correction to the classical conductance of a disordered mesoscopic normal-superconducting (NS) junction in which the electron spatial and spin degrees of freedom are coupled by an appreciable spin orbit interaction. We use random matrix theory to describe the scattering in the normal part of the junction and consider both quasi-ballistic and diffusive junctions. The dependence of the junction conductance on the Schottky barrier transparency at the NS interface is also considered. We find that the quantum correction is sensitive to the breaking of spin rotation symmetry even when the junction is in a magnetic field and time reversal symmetry is broken. We demonstrate that this sensitivity is due to quantum interference between scattering processes which involve electrons and holes traversing closed loops in the same direction. We explain why such processes are sensitive to the spin orbit interaction but not to a magnetic field. Finally we consider the effect of the spin orbit interaction on the phenomenon of ``reflectionless tunnelling.''

Level Statistics and Localization for Two Interacting Particles in a Random Potential

We consider two particles with a local interaction $U$ in a random potential at a scale $L_1$ (the one particle localization length). A simplified description is provided by a Gaussian matrix ensemble with a preferential basis. We define the symmetry breaking parameter $μ\propto U^{-2}$ associated to the statistical invariance under change of basis. We show that the Wigner-Dyson rigidity of the energy levels is maintained up to an energy $E_μ$. We find that $E_μ \propto 1/\sqrtμ$ when $Γ$ (the inverse lifetime of the states of the preferential basis) is smaller than $Δ_2$ (the level spacing), and $E_μ \propto 1/μ$ when $Γ> Δ_2$. This implies that the two-particle localization length $L_2$ first increases as $|U|$ before eventually behaving as $U^2$.
